I have only had this a few weeks but already have referred to it many times. It gives very practical information in a forthright manner. Definitely a great addition to my gardening library.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth having.......2007-10-01

Tracy's use of the latin name as opposed to the common name is a little un-nerving for a begginer- like me - but it is one way to drum it into you so that when you go to the nursery you will find what you truly want... plus the detail to specific plants is amazing. Appendix C is worth the price of the book alone...

I bought this book for my Mother-in-law and she wrote 'The information is set out in a concise format which is easily referenced. It is packed with information to help you get the most from your perennials. It is a wonderful book and I refer to it constantly.'

I love this book! It is as beautiful as it is informational. It is delightful to read to the work of a master who can convey her heart as well as her technical skills. I am pleased to add it to my gardening book treasures.

The fun and easy way to grow orchids As anyone who has read Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief or has seen the movie Adaptation knows, orchids inspire a passionate following. And their popularity is rising: according to the USDA, more than 12.7 million orchids were sold in the U.S. last year. Brimming with black-and-white illustrations and eight pages of color photos, this friendly guide introduces would-be orchid fanciers to today's most popular and intriguing orchid varieties; and shows step by step how to select healthy plants at a nursery or commercial grower, cultivate them successfully at home, promote blooms, create beautiful orchid displays, and even produce hybrids. Steven Frowine (New Hartford, CT) worked with orchids professionally as a horticulturist at Hawaii's National Tropical Botanical Garden and at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where he was chairman of indoor horticulture and oversaw over 10,000 plants.

5 out of 5 stars Informative book.......2007-05-15

This book doesn't have many pictures of orchids but it does have a lot of good, basic information. I have and use several books including Ortho's All About Orchids and Complete Guide to Orchids and Rittershausen's Growing Orchids. I've learned from all of them. Orchids for Dummies has suggestions that none of the others have. It also has a good index.

Great Book for folks that are beginners with Orchids. Well Organized and easy to undestand!

Highly recommend it for beginners and a good reference book for your orchid book library.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-02-23

This is a great book for beginners growing Orchids. The only drawback I saw was whether or not to prune after the blooms fall. I still don't have the answer to that question. But this book does cover a lot of other areas and was easy to follow and understand.

Perennials are the most challenging and rewarding of all garden plants, and most gardeners need all the help they can get to grow them well. Perennials emerge from the ground in early spring, grow to full height, bloom, bear fruit, and then disappear with the first frost, only to do the same thing the following year and again the next. Add this to the fact that for the first year or two, perennials don't do much above the ground (they are growing their root structure), but after that they burst forth with amazingly vigorous growth, and you get an idea of the pleasures and tribulations of perennial gardening. The rewards, however, are rich: a wide array of flower forms and colors, structure and leaf, an ever-changing mid-level tapestry in the garden, plus a celebration of seasonal change. Few gardeners can resist perennials, but how to grow them better and more effortlessly?

Readers can count on Rodale books to be practical and detailed and to advocate organic gardening. While Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials does give information, as you would expect from Rodale, on soil building, climate, propagation and nontoxic pest and disease control, its emphasis is on design. The advice is down-to-earth, as in a sidebar entitled "Evergreen Perennials: Myth or Reality?" that points out that although some perennials are touted as evergreen, and do keep their leaves through the winter (such as Epimedium, Ajuga, and Bergenia), they are often so tattered by winter storms that they shouldn't be counted on to beautify the garden off-season.

Though packed with all sorts of useful information, the meat of the book is the encyclopedia of perennials. From acanthus to yucca, each comes with a color photo, cultural and cultivar information, as well as suggestions on use. Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials is an invaluable reference for anyone interested in these rewarding, though somewhat demanding, plants. --Valerie Easton

The revised 10th Anniversary Edition of Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials is the last word on growing lush, healthy gardens using hundreds of gorgeous, versatile perennials. 'A great deal of expertise and thorough research has gone into the making of this encyclopedia, and it shows on every page.'-Christopher Lloyd, author of The Well-Tempered Garden and The Adventurous Gardener 'An excellent reference book for all gardeners, from the novice to the expert. It will definitely be on my bookshelf.'-Dr. Allan M. Armitage, author of Herbaceous Perennial Plants and Allan Armitage on Perennials

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Every Gardener.......2006-07-27

This book is very informative and also well organized. It offers many useful tips and information for greenhorn and experienced gardeners alike. It covers every perennial you can think of and even some that I considered roadside weeds. Great reference guide to care for your perennials properly. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Makes Getting "Serious Gardener" Results Much Easier.......2006-05-17

This is the one book about perennials to own if you can only own one -- part growing manual, part plant reference encyclopedia, and part garden design guide. I stumbled into gardening by accident, having avoided it throughout my youth, but once I caught "the bug," I wanted to learn in a hurry how to do it correctly. This book was (and is) the perfect choice.

Actually, I discovered the advantages of this book backwards: I began by just using it to look up the dozens of plants that I began to bring home from nurseries with the word "perennial" on their hangtags. After a while, I noticed that it had great advice on how to keep the ones that were dying under my care from, well, dying under my care. And eventually I saw that Phillips and Burrell were also smarter than me about how to plan out my garden, for both improved aesthetics and healthier plants.

One aspect of this book that I liked from Day One is that the authors speak the non-gardener version of English, so it's easy to understand and follow. One would think all gardening books would be down-to-earth (pun intended), but no...not like this one.

If you have a garden already, you might want to start using this book by charting out the current layout of the garden and labeling each plant. Don't worry - the book is filled with full-color photographs to help you identify anything that you don't recognize by name. And pretty soon you'll not only see options you hadn't considered before, you'll even know what to ask for at the nursery or home center.

Have fun with it. I know I do.

Book Description

The Dutch had Tulip Mania in the 17th century. Victorian England had its own equivalent with "orchidelirium," an obsessive passion for orchids that has carried into thepresent day. Orchids remain among the most beautiful, hotly debated, and passionately collected of all flowers.ORCHIDELIRIUM presents Harold Feinstein's breathtaking pictures of orchids--dozens of different varieties and shades of them. In the tradition of the critically acclaimed gift book One Hundred Flowers (Bulfinch Press, 2000), this new volume offers images of staggering detail and subtlety. Nobody has been able to match Feinstein's mastery of flower photography, and nowhere is his remarkable talent as evident as it is in these pictures oforchids, nature's most delicate and variegated creations.

This book has stunning photographs of all kinds of orchids. If you like the front cover, you are sure to like this book. The book is large, not only coffee-table size, but also very thick (and heavy!). With the gorgeous pictures, it would make a wonderful gift for any orchid lover. Unfortunately I haven't seen the main competition, the book "Orchids" so I can't say how they compare, but I can't imagine going wrong with this book.

I gave this book as a gift and have heard wonderful things about it. This book is very useful for help planning for choosing native plants and for figuring out where to plant natives in a garden.

4 out of 5 stars Armitage's Native Plants.......2007-01-16

Good presentation of native plants, but could have more photos of some of the more obscure species. The book is slanted more toward the southeast and east U.S. Representation of western species is not as strong as it could be, but overall a very interesting book.

I found this book an excellent reference to have for studying native plants. It should be in your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Armitage's Native Plants for North American Gardens.......2007-01-10

Very enjoyable and informative book. The enjoyment comes from the author's inclusion of personal perspectives of the native plants and the informative comes from the basic and beyond scientific information. Included is identification of the plant, habitat and propagation. Also mentioned are the cultivars of various plants. Good information for the beginning native plant gardener.

Book Description

Understanding the flowering plants of any region begins with the recognition of families. This remarkable volume, created to serve students, professionals, and other plant enthusiasts, covers 130 temperate to tropical families common in North America with detailed illustrations and modern referenced commentaries. Each family discussion includes a diagnosis and summary of characteristics, distribution data, important economic members, and pollination ecology. The book's most striking feature is Zomlefer's 158 original pen-and-ink plates depicting intricate dissections of 312 species.

The content of the family discussions is geared to readers who have completed one introductory biology course. For readers less familiar with botanical terminology, Zomlefer provides an illustrated glossary of 551 terms with more than 300 drawings. Other important tutorial features are twenty-two detailed charts that compare pertinent characteristics of certain related plant groups and a general chart that summarizes the salient features of the families covered in the text. Both amateurs and professionals will particularly enjoy the chapter on examining, dissecting, and sketching live material.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families.......2007-01-18

The book is just fine ... that's why I ordered it ... it's a good book.

However, I thought I was buying the book USED at a less-than-new price. The price I actually paid was the new price. And I did receive a new book, thank you.

My question: Why didn't I pay for and receive the USED book that I wanted? I wonder if there is something in the ordering process that I missed. This is the first book order from amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for a beginner.......2007-01-10

I got this book because I needed to learn about plants and I needed a no nonsense, basic introduction to the plant families of the world--not just trees, not just herbs, and not just information from one part of the world. This book is all that and more. The descriptions of each family use botanical terminology, there are clear line drawings of the taxonomically informative characters, and economically important species are listed in each family. Because I am not an expert on plants, I can't comment on the accuracy of the information, but I can say that this book has been a great resource for me, as a novice botanist. My only complaint (and this is a minor one, because this is not supposed to be a field guide) is that I am unfamiliar with many of the families and color photos would really help me to learn to recognize the plants in nature. I highly recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families by Wendy B. Zomlefer [Paperback] .......2005-07-04

This should be a five start rating but something happened when I wrote the review so I can't change the star rating. Suffice it to say that this is a very comprehensive book with wonderful black and white illustrations. A very useful guide for students of botanical art or for anyone interested in plants.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Families.......2005-05-06

Many floras and the USDA Plant Database use Cronquist's classification system. Several families in that system are missing in Thorne's system as used in this book. I would suggest supplementing this book with James Payne Smith's "Vascular Plant Families."

4 out of 5 stars Very handy reference to have around........2005-04-05

Occasionally I have to (try) and key out plants at work. Not having a botany background makes this difficult and when I get stumped on a particular term or piece of plant anatomy I call up this book to walk me through the terminology. It is particularly useful if you can key the plant out to family level. It's picture (line art) illustrations are very clear and help tremendously when trying to understand what it is the key is referring to. Well worth the 35 dollars if you deal with the anatomy of plants at all or need to know family characteristics.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More than updated.......2007-05-15

The predecessor of this book, Flowering Plants of the World, was a well-known reference for decades to many who love plants. There is a strong sense of continuity between these two books, if for no other reason that both use the same illustrations. In fact the continuity goes further and also involves much of the contents, as evidenced by the error of zebrawood being supplied by a species of Connarus, a myth that was debunked in the 1940's.

Where the earlier book was based on the Cronquist system, with the plant families arranged by order, this book is (loosely) based on APG II (2003), with the plant families arranged by alphabet. As to recognition of families, this book adopts a splitter's philosophy, recognizing 506 families (versus 457 in APG II). The book recognizes families such as Bombacaceae, Cneoraceae, Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae. The classification in this book will not be found in any other reference, but this splitter's policy may help the book retain its value in these times of constant change in plant classification.

5 out of 5 stars Never received.......2007-08-23

I never received the book from Amazon. My order was cancelled after I had paid for it. I was refunded. I bought it from someone else and its great. Really good pictures and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-03-08

This is one of the Orchidbooks that anyone who loves orchids should have. Its filled with a lot off information of botanical orchids.

It's one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars My Orchid Bible.......2002-11-07

This book is truly my orchid Bible. There is some information about almost everything you want to know orchids. I find this book useful when trying to find the general characteristics of a genus or even to identify a plant by its flower. Many, many pictures, and they are all beautiful. They lack in the growing tips category, but make up with the fairly detailed species descriptions for the species they cover in the book. Hope this is helpful!

5 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids.......2002-09-05

This is an excellent reference book for orchid collectors. The photographs of the orchids are wonderful, as well as the complementary description. It makes ordering orchids on-line easier as well as purchasing orchids at a nursery.

5 out of 5 stars Best orchid species encyclopedia - 1100 species!.......2002-07-19

Book contains about 298 pages divided into three sections. The sections are Orchid Cultivation & Description (15 pages), Species Encyclopedia (270 pages), and Glossary & Index (13 pages).

The focus of the book is the orchid species encyclopedia. Each orchid is listed with information on genus, tribe, etymology, and a paragraph describing the characteristics of the orchid and its history. About 2/3rds of the species also include a photograph.

Photography is excellent. Hundreds of clear, crisp, and properly identified images fill the book. It is truly an illustrated encyclopedia.

I love this book! It is exactly the kind of reference book I needed. Being new to orchids, I have a difficult time seeing a name in a catalog and relating it to an image of an orchid flower. This book is great, it has helped me discover many new and interesting species. Well, at least they are new to me :-)

My library contains several books on orchid culture that gives me clues to growing the plants. But this book identifies hundreds of genera, and 1100 species. Best orchid species encyclopedia that I've seen. Great reference book!

2 out of 5 stars Both Too Much and Too Little .......2006-09-20

Howard Wood's The Dendrobiums is a massive volume, numbering xxiii+ 847 pp. + 117 pp of photographs - approximately 1000 pp. at the hefty retail price of $150 USD. This volume covers quite a range of topics and certainly is the most comprehensive available volume on the tribe Dendrobieae. Unfortunately, I do not think the volume to be worth the price, even at the substantial discounts at which it is presently available. In brief, the numerous typographic (including type setting) errors are very distracting and speak for a need for a careful and thorough edit. More importantly, I found this volume to be based too frequently on personal opinion and conjecture, without adequate development of his opinions and conclusions. For example, the author says he is not trying to make taxonomic changes, while in places he makes them, usually with little explanation. The sections on numerical taxonomy and DNA analysis are particularly incomplete, leaning heavily upon Yukawa's research, and in general the writing on the evolution and ecology of the tribe is not very insightful. Figures appear without adequate captions or explanation. The sections on plant and flower anatomy and the regional/country floras are useful, and the regional floras are available nowhere else except in a comprehensive university or museum library. Citations and references are fully given in the extensive bibliography. The photographs are mostly from Wood's own collection, as are the cultural notes. For the amateur grower, the cultural notes are likely to be less than helpful, since by Wood's own admission they are based upon his experience only - and all rather discouraging, since he found so many species to be unsustainable in cultivation. In brief, the major flaw of this volume is its comprehensiveness. There is something for everyone, but not enough detail to satisfy virtually anyone. Wood's work is a step in the right direction, but given his note concerning how much work is needed, points to how far we have to go to get something better. On balance, as a grower I found the photos of species not to be found anywhere else to be the most useful element in this volume; as a scientist, I found the citations and references to be most useful. However, the combination as it is represented in this book is not very satisfactory. I find the two volumes by Baker and Baker and Lavarack et al., combined with Jay Pfahl's species encyclopedia on the internet, to constitute a more useful set of resources for this subject than The Dendrobiums.

3 out of 5 stars The Dendrobiums.......2006-08-27

A very good book for the serious student of the subject.
For the dendrobium grower of an advanced status the "notes on the species" is rather thin, i.e. that section could have been enlarged. To fill some gaps, perhaps just a simplified list of species with name, origin and C, Int. or W might have helped. But in conjunction with other literature on dendrobiums, it is a great font of knowledge.
Thanks.

The book has beautiful pictures and wonderful ideas. I wish it would identify all flowers and amounts used in the boquets.
I thought it might be more of an instructional book. It is a good reference.
