Windows Vista Inside Out
I am in my early 70s and can still remember that a farmer whom I worked for at the time would not buy a tractor, because it would be less cost effective than the horses he used. I found this book very useful, practical and easy to understand. It tells you more than you will ever want to know, however, where is the glossary? With the overwhelming quantity of acronyms, though well explained it would from time to time be handy to be able to just look the meaning up in a list rather then to have to back track in the text. Great book nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars Great Refererence.......2007-09-26

New Vista users here is a great Reference and help with the little problems..A bit bulky but covers it all.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Follow-Up to Windows XP Inside Out.......2007-09-12

If you enjoyed Windows XP Inside Out, you'll also enjoy this book. Its full of helpful hints.

If you're a beginner, I wouldn't suggest this book. If you're an advanced user you probably will learn a few new things. But if you're an intermediate user this is right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2007-09-10

Perfect Condition. CD is a great help too. Great tool for intermediate users.

5 out of 5 stars Advantage: Comes with eBook version.......2007-08-28

Vista isn't very hard to use, but there are little things that I need to look up on occasion. I love the fact that I can install the eBook on my computer so I always have it with me. (I use a TabletPC and carry it to home and work and on trips.) Having all this information available to me at all times is great. People ask me a question (I do tech support), I search for the answer, tell them what they need to know, and they think I know everything. Having it on the computer makes all the difference to me.

This book might be well suited to someone who has little or no experience with previous Microsoft OS. For the rest I recommend David Pogue's book if you are not of a mind to search through every Vista book on the market...

4 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows Vista Step by Step.......2007-06-11

This is a very practical book. Sometimes the authors say things like "set up your prefernces" , which to me is not helpful. Since I am new to computer's I don't have any! I wish they would give their preferences. Just tell me what to do! Most of the book is good, because there is a lot of hands-on excercises. The practices help to cement the ideas. One thing about the Vista OS though is you will find a help button in each window you open. This book tells you where thoughs windows are. It's easy to follow. Buy this book! It's worth it. I didn't know there was so many things to learn until I got it.

    Book Description

“Something big is about to happen….”
–From the Foreword by Don Box, Architect, Microsoft Corporation

“If I were writing a Workflow book, this is what I would have written. The material is very well presented with code examples and explanations. Also, I love how the authors discuss the underlying architecture, enabling me to get a really deep understanding of the technology to efficiently design and build my own projects.”

    –Jeffrey Richter (http://Wintellect.com)

“Explicit support for workflows in a lightweight framework is a major contribution. Many tough problems traditionally faced by application authors, such as state management in the presence of long-running activities (think weeks or months!), can be addressed systematically by adopting

a workflow approach. Dharma Shukla and Bob Schmidt present the workflow technology under and made accessible by the new workflow foundation in the .NET 3.0 framework, and they do so in an approachable and yet authoritative way that is truly enjoyable.”

–Clemens Szyperski, software architect, Microsoft Corporation

“The Windows Workflow technology combines declarative programming and state machines in a very rich and powerful way, one that is bound to have a profound influence on the way we program in the coming years. In the style of the classic Essential COM by Don Box, Dharma and Bob have done a great job making this technology accessible to any developer already versed in C#, VB, and the .NET Framework, and who wants to achieve declarative enlightenment. Don’t miss out.”

–Joe Duffy, program manager, Common Language Runtime (CLR) team, Microsoft Corporation

“I think WF should and will be used as the main application model for web service applications. Developers working on web services will want to learn about this technology from this book; it comes straight from the source and explains the technology well and in depth.”

–Krzysztof Cwalina, program manager, Microsoft Corporation

“This book provides an enlightening exploration of Windows Workflow Foundation for both the novice and the veteran alike.”

–Nate Talbert, software design engineer, Microsoft Corporation

Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is a groundbreaking approach to writing and executing programs. WF programs are assembled out of resumable program statements called activities, which provide encapsulation of both domainspecific logic and control flow patterns reflective of real-world processes.

In Essential Windows Workflow Foundation, two WF lead architects–Dharma Shukla and Bob Schmidt–offer an under-the-hood look at the technology, explaining the why and not just the how of WF’s key concepts and architecture. Serious WF developers seeking details about how to effectively utilize and extend the framework by writing activities will find cogent explanations and answers here. With simple and illustrative examples, the authors demonstrate exactly how to leverage WF’s extensible programming model to craft domain-specific programs. Drawing on their unique vantage point in designing and developing WF, Shukla and Schmidt deliver authoritative coverage of

Essential Windows Workflow Foundation is the definitive resource for developers seeking an in-depth understanding of this novel technology.

Dharma Shukla is an architect at Microsoft working on next-generation programming models. A founding member of the Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) team, Dharma played a key role in defining the architecture of WF. Bob Schmidt is a senior program manager at Microsoft working on next-generation programming models. Since 2003, his primary focus has been on the design of WF. Both authors have been involved with the WF project since its inception, and have been responsible for specifying, designing, and developing large portions of the technology.

2 out of 5 stars Spare me the vocabulary.......2007-09-24

Look, there are enough buzzwords that are ill-used in our "profession domain".

Passivate? Pedagogical? Episodic execution? Thread and process agility?

    Enough. Enough. Enough.

When a book starts as oddly as this one did, the editors are using the wrong ruler to measure what valuable content should look like.

Essential (absolutely necessary; indispensable) information should not be "decorated" with such a mish-mash of terms stolen from other disciplines or made up for the sake of being unique.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best insider book.......2007-04-29

This is one of the best books I have read. It shows the real internal workings of WF and does so vividly. This is not a work-by-example book but a book everyone must own to learn the fundamentals. I didn't want to get spoiled by the Visual Designer in DevStudio simply because I wanted to know what's going on behind the curtain and this book definitely hit the spot. I would buy other books (probably Scott Allen's) for practical usages/learning by examples.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed the MOST ESSENTIAL book on WF.......2007-04-27

Just as Kernighan-Ritchie wrote the book about "C" which laid the foundation to that language, this book is the "starting point" to learn the new paradigm of Workflow Programming. This book examines the WF "concepts" in a manner that build in steps, one concept at a time.

Most books try to give "everything" in "how to implement applications" fashion. But unless one gets a "conceptual understanding" of what the technology is, and why it is like that, it would be hard to "think with" that technology. One can "copy" other examples for rapid implementations, but one cannot "invent" solutions that apply to their own domain.

By reading this book one can really "invent" solutions to "any" domain one works in. Very well written book. I suspect Don Box played an important role in guiding the style of this book. Other subjects should also have such "essential" books available.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to more than just use activities to build workflows..........2007-04-10

...then get this book. This is an excellent book by the creators of WF. I had been working on WF for a long time, not just by using activities, but building them. However, I never was really confident because while I understood the concepts of activitiy, designer, validator, persistence, I was unaware of many other concepts like what is the threading model (should I make my data structures used in my custom activities thread safe?), scheduler, xoml vs xaml, etc. I used to hit these concepts while designing activities and some runtime extensions and since I didn't completely know, I did not enjoy my work as much. Then this book is released. This book is exactly what I was looking for. Concisely written, but loaded in information. More importantly, it is comprehensive. As I read from chapter to chapter, all my fears about the concepts I only half-understood were replaced by the power of a holistic knowledge of WF I was gaining. There are other books out there which tell you what a CAG activity is and how to use it, but when you are done with that kind of stuff and you don't know where to look further, read this book. With zero exaggeration, I can say that after I read the book, my confidence increased so much that I look forward to work everyday more than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent discussion of WF architecture.......2007-03-23

This book is one of the best written technical books I've read in the last several years. It is not a book to teach WF programming so much as a discussion of the architectural foundations of WF. The greatest benefit I gained from this book was that, even when I can't use WF itself, I can use some of the patterns that make WF possible. If you're an architect looking to gain a clear understanding of what WF is, and from that, what it can do, there is no better book than this one.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2007-09-18

This is a well written book that I have read in recent times. If you are .net developer and looking for the nuts of bolts of WF, you need this book. I have read only 3 chapters and already very impressed with the author. The author explains in DETAIL everything about workflow. In fact the author also explains about unit testing a workflow. Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Better than attending a hands on training course.......2007-07-06

This is by far the best book in the market on WF for a programmer. If you do its programming exercises it easily replaces a 5-day hands on training course. Now that is a great ROI. The book is very easy to read and understand.

I would recommend the Essential Workflow Foundation by Dharma Shukla as a companion book. This one gives an insight into what .NET 3.0 WF does in the background to make it all happen. Also if you were to try to use WF without Visual Studio, Dharma Shukla book would be the right one to pick as it does not use VS at all.

5 out of 5 stars Best Workflow book available.......2007-06-25

I read through all of the available books on WF and this was definitely the best. Pro WF has a lot of practical information missing in a lot of other books. In particular, the sections on rules, exception handling, and web service hosting are worth the price of the book all by themselves. If you want to know how, and why, to use WF in your real every-day programming then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Thorough.......2007-06-20

I am a colleague of the author's and recently got the opportunity to investigate using Workflow Foundation for a business application. Not knowing much about this component of .NET 3.0 and having only read some introductory material about it on MSDN, I found this book to be an excellent place to start learning it for real.

This book is very clear and thorough and works through the subject in an organized and methodical way. The fact that it's written by a single author is a benefit, since it gives a more coherent treatment of the subject than some technical books written by several (or even many) people.

The text includes solid examples that don't go overboard with irrelevant tangents. I was also impressed that the author tackled some of the more difficult aspects of this technology, like hosting the workflow designer in your own applications.

I would recommend this to anybody who wants to get a deeper understanding of Workflow Foundation.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Thorough.......2007-06-13

I've read a few books so far on WF and I find the MSDN documentation to lack details, and most other books to also not go into enough details. Pro WF answered all my questions where the other books did not and now that I have a good foundation in WF, I still go back to it to look up details of various topics.

    Book Description

This book is for users wanting to understand the impact of international economics. Therefore, the economic theory is low-level, but it is very applied with an emphasis on managerial or public policy decision-making. For instance, the book gives heavier treatment to international production and international development than most international economics books.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars a global study.......2007-07-28

Reinert explains the current workings of the global economy. Explaining the basic precepts of international trade. Within the context of the postwar trade agreements. The rise of the newly industrialising countries of East Asia (Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) is keyed to the massive amounts of export-driven manufactured goods that those countries produced.

Related to this are ideas like the enabling of foreign direct investment, which can act as a capital supplier and a spur to future growth of a country that gets the investment.

The book also delves into economic theory and accounting frameworks needed to quantify international trade. Given the global scope of the book, currencies and exchange rates between those currencies are discussed. Hence the idea of purchasing power parity, as a different way to compare countries, instead of purely by exchange rates. The Big Mac index, introduced by the Economist magazine, is given as a vivid instantiator of PPP.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointed!! (No CD/DVD).......2007-10-07

The major thing that disappoints me is that there is no CD/DVD with the book. There are lots of code snippets (rather than complete listings) and it is hard to understand if you can't see everything. An E-book version would also be nice (like every other MS Press book).

Other than that, it is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars This is my manifesto for SharePoint *Development* (as opposed to customization).......2007-09-24

In what I think of as my "pre-Pattison" era I was beating my head against SharePoint. The projects I'd inherited seemed unmanageable and deployment was a nightmare. For the project I was going to be starting from scratch, I was frantically coming up with excuses to not use SharePoint, although there was external pressure to use it.

Ted's book explains the key difference between SharePoint customization and SharePoint development, and focuses on best practices for the later. After reading it, I had a game plan for future development using SharePoint and also for bringing my two legacy apps under control.

5 out of 5 stars A hands on book .......2007-07-23

I agree with the other reviewers this is a book that is worth reading if you are working with Sharepoint development...

5 out of 5 stars By far, mandatory for all Sharepoint developers..........2007-07-23

I had a chance to take Ted's class on the subject matter of this book and found him to be extremely knowledgeable, insightful and practical with regard to developing for Sharepoint. Taking the class and having his book really took me to the next level understanding how WSS 3.0 work and can be extended. This book is a must read from cover to cover if you are new or want to get more acquainted with Sharepoint Services development.

5 out of 5 stars This book fills in the gaps in the SDK.......2007-07-11

Finally, there is a book that provides all the basic information that a developer needs to get started with WSS 3.0. Almost all that information that a developer would expect to find in the SDK documentation is finally available. If this trend continues, it seems that in the future, there will be no SDK documentation, only books to purchase, if you needed documentation.

Very well written, like all books in the 'Inside...' series!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for WWF.......2007-08-11

This is a really great book that explains in good detail the workings of WWF. The only knock on this book is that some of the examples did not work.

    3 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2007-08-05

I did not enjoy this book - or at least the half that I got through. I don't understand why the author decided to go off on so many code intensive forrays.

The first chapter looked promising.. we began right away with some designing of a simple activity. However the next chapter suddently delved into .. logging all your WF activities to a SQL DB. All the code for this being written out in excruciating longhand (connection strings, connection, data adapters, commands, parameters all written out by hand). How about dropping in a dataset and be done with it?

The next chapter was all about stopping and starting instances of the WF runtime. The whole time I'm wondering "Do I need to do this?". Turns out - no you don't.

Regardless I pushed on - but the author seemed to have zero interest in covering what I would assume most people want to do with WF : build activities aimed at solving business problems.

I would not recommend this book for those who want to "hit the ground running" and becoming proficient in the least amount of time. This book seems to cover a lot more detail than most developers need. Just my opinion of course...

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction to WF.......2007-07-10

I hope that when I get around to writing a tech book someday that it comes out as good as WFF Step by Step! I'm very excited about this technology (and WCF) and this book has been a tremendous help so far and I'm not even half way through it. Best $44 I've spent in a long time (even better deal if you buy it online!).

I feel confident that I can tackle my first big workflow project after reading this book and completing all the examples. Kenn has also provided updated examples on his web site!

If you need to get up to speed on WF fast, use this book!

5 out of 5 stars love the step by step books.......2007-06-28

I've always enjoyed the step by step books, because they force me to sit down and work through the technology. I read through other books and tend to use them more as reference books. Of course the different step by step books have different authors and some are better than others.

I'm happy to say that this one is great. Especially important to me since the subject matter is critical for projects that I have on the table. Mr. Scribner takes you through the fundamentals and into a detailed analysis of most of the provided activities before delving into more advanced subjects such as workflow types other than sequential. The book wraps up with using workflow on the client and server ends of web services.

The steps are laid out well except for some cumbersome back referencing to previous chapters in some of the earlier chapters. At some times the author gets a little wordy and monotonous with steps (e.g. step 1 of most of the samples). He could have been straight to the point and just have said open the project such and such.

The samples are where this book really shines. All of the code is available on the CD that can be installed (although I would have much preferred to copy the data from the CD). The author provides two solution directories for most of the samples in the book. The first one is a partial solution that includes all of the work not relevant to workflow or what you've already learned (e.g. you won't have to drudgingly build your service interfaces for each sample). The second one is a complete solution already done that you can reference. The samples are interesting and relevant. You can tell the author had fun with them.

There are some subjects namely rules, declaritive workflows, and session state with web services that could have been expounded on, but I suppose to be fair the purpose of a step by step book is not to go into too much depth on things. That being said, there are some external references, but not enough and a summary of them at the back of the book would be nice.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-18

It is an excellent introductory book about Workflow Foundation.

In addition to step by step tutorials, the author uses real world examples to illustrate concepts. I also like the writing style.

After I read the book, I realize that Windows Workflow Foundation is a powerful programming tool that will change the way how the software is constructed. Can not wait to use Workflow in the next project!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2007-02-25

I was so impressed by this book when I checked it out from the library I realized I had to have a copy of my own for those times when problems crop up that drive me toward the deep end. This book does what it claims. Though it won't answer all of your problems (what book would), it's easy to understand and can provide simple solutions to what seem like complex problems. It also gives the reader various references and free helpful programs on-line. I highly recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars Not a technical manual.......2007-02-03

OK for the nontechnical XP users. Most of these hints have been published elsewhere but it is a nice collection.

5 out of 5 stars Would recommend this book.......2006-08-15

I love the format Steve Bass uses while writing
about computer annoyances. Many of the tips and solutions
can save you frustrations that are always there even in
a minor way because you may not know how to fix them.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Practical,Funny,To the Point........2006-07-17

After slogging through books on W2KPro/XPPro that are painful to read and no help unless your running 100+ PC's this book was a welcome relief in it's smarts, humor, and direct approach to fixing many of the challenges presented by the above mentioned OS's. Having one of my usual sleepless nights I started tallying up all the money I spent trying to keep MS software running, protected from hackers, bots, spyware, virii worms and it's own predisposition to fail and I realize that with an entire industry built around sloppy software as the norm and a gov't asleep at the antitrust wheel we're not likely to see a real improvement any time soon. When you hear words like regulation stifles innovation reach down and make sure you still have your wallet because it's about to be plundered. It's always about the money. If I had to spend another $25 to have this book included in the box that MS/OS came in then I would've saved hundreds on books that did'nt meet my needs and priceless amounts of lost time.

    5 out of 5 stars PC Annoyances.......2006-02-28

This is not the usual boring computer book. Just the opposite.
I'm reading it the second time with a felt tip marker. After reading a chapter I go to my computer, explore, and make changes. I've learned more reading this book than any other computer book I've purchased. And it's written so the average computer user like me can understand.
