5 out of 5 stars Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year .......2007-07-16

The Childbearing Year contains a wide range of resources for woman pertaining to their reproductive health. This information includes activities, foods, and herbal supplements that can benefit woman hoping to conceive, who are pregnant, or who have a newborn child. These topics range from increasing fertility health for better odds of becoming pregnant and things to stay away from to reduce the likelihood of miscarriage through safe remedies for morning sickness and ways to alleviate late pregnancy back ache to herbs that will reduce the intensity of post partum depression and safe remedies for colic.

I recommend this book to any woman who is thinking of having a child, is pregnant, or has a newborn. Not only does this book give the reader a clear idea of activities, foods, and herbs that she can use for common reproductive related ailments but the author also explains the safest ways to use these remedies. 5 out of 5 stars Amazingly helpful book!.......2006-11-14

As a woman pondering conception, I am endeavoring to learn as much as possible about ways to care for my body in accord with nature. The Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year has proven to be a validating, concise, useful tool. The writing style is akin to an intimate friend whispering her remedies in your ear. Latin nomenclature and common names of the herbs and precise recipes make the suggestions easy to follow. I highly recommend this to anyone who expects to be expecting soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the "alternative' mom.......2006-08-28

If you are into herbs and natural health and pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant this is a must read! Full of wonderful information and very well written. Was my favorite book during pregnancy and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Good book about herbal childbearing.......2006-06-16

I really found this book useful. I've had it for many years and was looking for an herbal book for childbearing when I got it. I have several herb books but like the fact that this one zeros in on one subject. I wasn't really interested in the part about aborting babies, though. All in all, the book is very readable and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any woman who is expecting........2006-03-14

I just ordered two copies of this wonderful book for my office. I have a small healing center and women who come to me are into a more holistic and natural way to experience pregnancy and childbirth. This book is a wonderful friend to keep handy throughout your pregnancy and birthing experience. Ms. Weed lists a number of herbal preparations to use for the varying issues that come up during the 'waiting' period and the birthing also. Try it....

1 out of 5 stars Poor Solution to an Urgent Need.......2007-09-03

I am an experienced Word user. I bought this book because the differences between Word 2007 and Word 2003 were so significant that I considered it necessary to get some assistance in getting up to speed with the new version. This book does nothing for that; there are significant notes throughout the book on the changes, but absolutely nothing on how to tackle, address, work round or otherwise cope with these very major changes. If you are a first-time user of Word, starting on Word 2007, then the author will describe it's operation moderately satisfactorily, however you will get bored with the comments on the fact that Word 2003 does it differently. If you are an existing user of Word, upgrading, you will find that those areas which have not changed will be described in fulsome detail; those areas that have changed and you want advice/assistance on will be noted as a change but very little assistance will be offered. I do not recommend spending your money on this book for those users wishing to upgrade.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for novice and advanced users.......2007-03-23

When Microsoft Word 2007 was released at the end of January this year I read in one publication that there are an astonishing 1,500 commands available in the newest version of this industry standard word processing program. I installed the new Office 2007 Suite on my home PC in mid-February and found out for myself that there are in fact hundreds of commands, functions and tools both visible and hidden in the new Word interface that opens in front of me each time I start a new document. Even though I am an advanced Word user, when I saw the Word 2007 Bible advertised on this website I knew I needed this book to survive.
I am not disappointed. The author has indeed written a Bible for anyone that uses Word and wants to advance to the latest version with its new look and feature rich contents. I have found simple step by step explanations in the Word 2007 Bible to do what were previously maddening tasks because one could not find the command or tool to make them work. The author adds humor to the text of this publication so it almost seems like light reading rather than a boring procedure manual. This huge volume is well indexed making it easy to find the pages pertaining to the tool or function you need.
It is stated on the cover the author, Herb Tyson, is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional so I partially expected a book that would present Word as being perfect, flawless and as easy to use as a can opener. The book is not like that at all, but to the contrary points out problematical functions, things you can not easily do and things that are missing or do not work well. We truly have an objective view of Word presented here that makes one feel the author is on your side rather than in Microsoft's court.
A CD-ROM is included with segments recorded by the author that display in Windows Media Player. An animated overview of several basic and advanced features of Word are presented. After viewing a few of the segments I copied the entire CD-ROM to my external hard drive because I knew I would be referring to it frequently in the future.
This book is excellent and a great addition to the library of any novice or advanced Word user.

Cannot say enough about how glad I am to own this. It has more than I would need to raise herbs. Concise. Beautiful pictures. Excellent reference source.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource book!.......2007-06-08

I purchased this book for a basic book about herb gardening. I used the reviews which were very helpful. It is fantastic! Not too confusing like some I purchased which were very technical. (Not being a scientist, I couldn't use a lot of them because I didn't know their botanical names!) This book is definitely user friendly. I am recommending it to my friends who also are getting into herb gardening. A lot of information for a good price, you won't be disappointed. Great recipe ideas too.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need!.......2006-08-07

I LOVE this book! It shows you how to grow, cook and use herbs in arrangements. It tells you what the history of the herb is and what other cultures have used them for. I'm not the best at writing reviews and I never do... but I would buy this one!!! It's a great price for a great book!

3 out of 5 stars Basic information.......2007-08-05

Most of the information is a rehash of conventional mainstream thinking...which is often incorrect. i.e. dairy is great source of calcium. While technically correct, this source of calcium is not readily absorbed in the body. The author actually encourages a 50% carbohydrate diet for diabetics!

5 out of 5 stars attia.......2007-04-11

This book is simply the best. It is categorized by food items. It is not technical. For example, you want to find out if grapes are good for you and why. you go to grapes. A quick summary tells you what grapes are good for in plain english, like reduce chol. lower blood pressue and so on. Then you can read more about that food item. There are kitchen recommendations of how to get the best of that food item.
All in plain english.
I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Consistent, high-quality coding standards improve software quality, reduce time-to-market, promote teamwork, eliminate time wasted on inconsequential matters, and simplify maintenance. Now, two of the world's most respected C++ experts distill the rich collective experience of the global C++ community into a set of coding standards that every developer and development team can understand and use as a basis for their own standards.

The authors cover virtually every facet of C++ programming: design and coding style, functions, operators, class design, inheritance, construction/destruction, copying, assignment, namespaces, modules, templates, genericity, exceptions, STL containers and algorithms, and more. Each standard is described concisely, with practical examples. From type definition to error handling, this book presents C++ best practices, including some that have only recently been identified and standardized--techniques you may not know even if you've used C++ for years. Along the way, you'll find answers to questions like

What's worth standardizing--and what isn't? What are the best ways to code for scalability? What are the elements of a rational error handling policy? How (and why) do you avoid unnecessary initialization, cyclic, and definitional dependencies? When (and how) should you use static and dynamic polymorphism together? How do you practice "safe" overriding? When should you provide a no-fail swap? Why and how should you prevent exceptions from propagating across module boundaries? Why shouldn't you write namespace declarations or directives in a header file? Why should you use STL vector and string instead of arrays? How do you choose the right STL search or sort algorithm? What rules should you follow to ensure type-safe code? Whether you're working alone or with others, C++ Coding Standards will help you write cleaner code--and write it faster, with fewer hassles and less frustration.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-09

I had high expectations about the fruit of the association of 2 authors that I appreciate but the result did not meet these expectations. Basically this book provides 101 rules or guidelines that you can get for free by looking at the table of content. Each of these rules is then followed by a very short explanation (1 or 2 pages usually). In my opinion, most of them are common wisdom that you can get from other sources. This is it. That is all you will get from this book. For that reason, I recommend to skip this one except if a convenient and compact collection of common knowledge is something that you are looking for.

3 out of 5 stars It is just a brief repeating of other books from the same Author.......2007-04-24

If you own the 3 "Exception C++" books, do not buy this book. It is just a mirror copy of those. And the explanation in this book is brief. Typically, if you are familiar with the content of this book, it works as a quick reference manual or pocket book.

4 out of 5 stars Readable, pithy, sensible, 'greatest hits' round up of advice on C++.......2007-03-02

It's Sutter! It's Alexandrescu! It's both of them together! And the dark lords of C++ have combined forces to produce... er, some coding standards.

Yes, another book of best practices. Some readers may therefore be a tad disappointed that the combined fruits of the authors' labours will not be shattering their puny human minds with the sort of C++ that cause lesser compilers to accidentally create black holes that destroy the entire universe.

But let's evaluate the book on what it sets out to do, which is to give 100 bite-sized pieces of advice on C++ coding. And it's very good. You might prefer to see it as an annotated guide to the state of the art in intermediate C++ programming, in particular to Sutter's Exceptional C++ trilogy, which has become sufficiently sprawling that a reorganisation of the material, plus pointers to which book said what, has become quite welcome.

Yes, it's true that C++ is hardly short of books telling you when to pass by value. But take a look at the bibliography - it's a synthesis of all those other tomes (the Effective series, Sutter's own Exceptional series of course, and older books like C++ Strategy and Tactics) plus magazine articles, into a neat and compact whole.

Few of the items are longer than one or two pages. This is good because the advice stays simple, clear and direct. On the other hand, some of the items feel a bit squeezed into the available space, with discussion deferred to the books in the references, which is a little frustrating on occasion. After all, a lot of the best parts of the Exceptional C++ and Effective C++ series and their ilk is not so much what to do (or not to do), but the why behind it. There's plenty of the former, but not so much of the latter.

If you've read any other coding convention books (like those in Steve McConnell's Code Complete) then the first quarter of the book may feel like the same old same old. And of course with there being exactly 100 items, some are more heavyweight than others. But there's definite C++ meat here, in particular with the items on Exceptions and the STL.

C++ Coding Standards is as well-written as you'd expect from the authors - their friendly, slightly conversational writing styles mesh nicely and I couldn't tell who wrote which bits. And it's a great summary and unification of C++ best practices that someone just starting out could easily refer to in their initial forays. Perhaps even more experienced hands will discover a few tips, implications or issues that they hadn't considered before. It could also be a good way to ensure that a team are all up to date on best practices.

Essential for those with a large C++ library? Probably not, but it does the job it sets out to do very well.

4 out of 5 stars Coding rules explained.......2006-10-24

This book is a very readable reference book. The authors have read several books and condensed the best coding rules to prevent many errors. If you code in any language other than C++, read this book because many of the hints are useful. (If you code C++, then all of the hints apply.) And if you don't like rules and guidelines, then just read the "exception" section provided in each entry to be sure that your code meets the exception.

4 out of 5 stars 101 rules, guidelines and best practices.......2005-12-17

The book clearly pushes forth a lot of pragmatic content that should be thoroughly adopted by the 80-percentile of all programmers "out there." For the 20% who would argue that a "guideline" isn't etched in stone, the rest of us need not worry.

It is easy to appreciate the authors' collective expertise and listen intently to the common sense and lessons learned through their experiences--all nicely wrapped up in this convenient package.

Inside are numerous quotations (proverbs?) that speak to the common sense of this book, such as: "If you have a procedure with ten parameters, you probably missed some."

In some ways, one may think that this book competes with Meyers' "Effective" series. While there certainly is some overlap, in a world plagued with bad code and bad coding standards and practices, one can argue that there can not be enough emphasis on raising the bar.

This book clearly puts forth a bar and explains the why's and why not's of its placement. I encourage every C++ programmer to buy and read this book cover-to-cover.

Aimed at the experienced C++ programmer, Herb Sutter's Exceptional C++ tests the reader's knowledge of advanced C++ language features and idioms with several dozen programming puzzles and explanations. This book can definitely help raise your C++ class design skills to the next level.

Based on the author's Guru of the Week Web column, this book poses a series of challenging questions on the inner workings of C++, centering around generic programming with the Standard Template Library (STL), exception handling, memory management, and class design. Even if you think you know C++ well, most of these problems will teach you something more about the language and how to write more robust classes that are "exception safe" (meaning they don't throw any handled exceptions or leak resources). Don't think this is just "language lawyering," though. The author's explanations stress sound programming principles (favoring simplicity) and idioms (such as the Pimpl idiom for class design that promotes faster compile times and better maintainability, or using "smart" auto_ptrs with STL.) Judging from the range and depth of these examples, Sutter's command of the inner workings of C++ is impressive, and he does an excellent job of conveying this expertise without jargon or a lot of theory.

After reading this book, C++ designers will learn several "best practices" of how to write robust, efficient classes that are "exception safe." Chances are you'll gain a better understanding of memory management techniques and working with STL too. For the experienced developer seeking leading-edge knowledge of some of the best ways to use C++, Exceptional C++ is both a challenging and truly worthwhile source of information. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Advanced C++ programming tutorial, generic programming, tips for string classes, containers and STL, temporary objects, exception-safe code tutorial, virtual functions, class inheritance, the Pimpl idiom, namespaces, memory management, C++ memory areas, overloading new and delete, using smart pointer with auto_ptr, using const, casts, and hints for better performance and code maintainability.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary book for a professional C++ coder.......2007-06-21

Just finished it. It may not be so apparent at first, but definitely you need it to find how to write a "perfect" C++ code.
Of course, before reading this book, several intermediate books demand reading, such as "Effective C++", "More Effective C++", "Effective STL". Some system programming book may also need to be read. Otherwise, you may have no idea why you need this book.

4 out of 5 stars The sequel is better than this one in my opinion.......2007-05-09

This book presents advices more or less in the same format than books from the Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series) serie. What is similar is that topics are divided in 47 small items of few pages each. The difference is that the author first ask questions to the readers or propose exercises and encourage the reader to put down the book and to take the time to think about the problem and then come back to read his answer. This format is more or less original as I have seen something similar in Tom Cargill C++ Programming Style (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series) book.

I have read this book pretty fast which is a good sign of my interest in a book but in the same time this book did not leave me a strong impression that will make me remember this reading for a long time. It is hard for me to say exactly why but I think that it is because most items focuses on very small details of C++. Some of these problems are very hard and probably is an indication that the book targeted audience is advanced C++ users which is not a bad thing by itself but I am not convinced that mastering these small details actually has a high impact on someone programming skills. It is probably just a matter of topic choices as I really appreciate much more the sequel than this book.

My review will probably not affect your decision to read or not this book. You will have to read it to find out if you like it but hopefully I have been helpful to let you know what to expect from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Must read book for intermediate C++.......2007-02-22

There seems to be a bit of confusion about what level this book is at. Based on some of the reviews I've read, I was a bit concerned that much of this book would fly right over my head, exploring advanced and obscure features. So let's get one thing straight: this is pitched at the same level as Effective C++, and has a similar structure and style.

And it's not just a 'puzzle' book - although it does highlight some tricky issues to do with templates and name lookup, which might conceivably appear in an unimaginative job interview.

And it's not just about the language feature of exceptions. All aspects of the language are covered, but the section on exceptions is particularly good.

Nor is it 'advanced' in the sense that many practitioners of C++ would consider, e.g. template metaprogramming, or non-portable hacks that take advantage of memory layout of compilers. Instead this is advice at an intermediate level, assuming you know the syntax and purpose of C++, but exploring their most appropriate use.

The structure of the book does involve a series of posed questions, but they differ wildly in how specific or general they are. You can see them more as a rhetorical device to frame the subsequent discussion, rather than questions you must answer (unless you want to retrospectively crown yourself guru of the week, of course).

Each question is followed by a significant discussion of a particular language feature, and summarised advice and recommended principles. Therefore the book is similar in structure to Effective C++. There is some overlap between the books, although even where similar material is included, there is differences in how much detail is given.

To some extent, this book is a victim of its own success. A lot of the advice given here can now be found in other books. But its legendary status means that like Effective C++, this is still essential reading as soon as you've graduated from introductory tomes.

1 out of 5 stars The Guru?.......2007-02-01

This book is a collection of silly, unusable tidbits. The author discusses unimportant issues that most programmers have no need to know in order to create excellent c++ code. If this is how one becomes a C++ Guru, then count me out!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book.......2006-07-07

Exceptional C++: 47 Engineering Puzzles, Programming Problems, and Solutions is very readable but should be read slowly and thoughtfully. The author packs an abundance of of good programming practices in a small book (less than 200 pages). You should have an in-depth, up-to-date, knowledge of C++ programming and the C++ Standard Library before tackling this book.

I used this book to test myself after reading The C++ Standard Library : A Tutorial and Reference The programming problems teach how to write correct, safe C++ code. I was particularly impressed with the coverage of writing exception-proof code. I believe that every C++ programmer should read this book and think about the discussions.

Designed to be a resource for both women who want to maintain breast health and those who've been diagnosed with breast cancer, Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way draws on "women's wisdom," or the inner knowledge often ignored by modern medicine, as a powerful tool for healing. Author Susun Weed proposes an anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms "Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.

Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating quotes from centuries-old books on healing.

Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided. She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes, paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.

The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen, and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index are included.

    Book Description

Foods, exercises, and attitudes to keep your breasts healthy. Supportive complimentary medicines to ease side-effects of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or tamoxifen. Foreword by Christiane Northrup, M.D.

This book has helped my wife in our struggle to prepare foods that I can have as a diabetic. I would recommend it to any family in the same situation. I now eat foods I enjoy and live a much happier life. Thanks a million.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT !.......2006-10-02

This is a great cook book. I hate to cook. I'm good at it, but I hate it. I want recipes that taste good, are healthy, and are easy to put together. I almost never buy cookbooks. Maybe one every 4 or 5 years. I saw this & what first struck me was how bright the pictures were. The recipes used alot of things I already keep on hand, such as ground turkey, salmon, turkey bacon, broccoli, splenda (of course), apple cider vinegar & so on. The directions are easy to follow & don't take alot of time. I especially like that with each recipe they have the nutrition info. This book lays out how many calories are in each serving, fat, protein, etc... There are not alot of recipes in this book, but what they have put in this book is very good. Its enough to get something different on your daily menu. There are a few recipes for sweet breakfast type things, although you could use these just as easily for dessert. You get recipes for pumpkin loaf, cinnamon coffee cake, blueberry corn muffins, etc... There are side dish recipes such as cucumber & onion salad, broccoli salad (I actually made the broccoli salad today. Its very good & my hubby loved it.) , orange almond salad, etc... There is a great recipe in here to make your BLTs (using turkey bacon) just a little differently using a recipe with light ranch dressing & some herbs & spices. There are lunch to dinner time recipes such as vegetarian chili, baked salmon with orange ginger sauce, chili seasoned meatloaf, etc... There are healthy desserts such as frozen raspberry ice pops, Pear Crisp, light lime cheesecake, etc... And there are also a few drinks such as Banana Raspberry Smoothie, elegant egg nog, and a hot chocolate recipe. This is definitely worth the $8. I couldn't be happier with it. Finally, a cookbook I can enjoy ! I highly recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures!.......2006-08-06

Though there aren't a lot of recipes in this cookbook, the ones that are offered are wonderful. I'm a visual person and the picutres make it so helpful. I can't wait to try everyone...and I hope it looks the same way.

4 out of 5 stars Splenda No calorie sweetener.......2006-07-05

A bookful of delightful recipes! My girl friend was looking for just this sort of text. She cooks for herself and her diabetic brother and said she had searched high and low for one of these. Looks to me as though this will fill the bill May copy some of the recipes for myself. What is so appealing about the book is it offers genuinely complete recipes and does not say, "Dump in this can and that." Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars A sauce for every occasion.......2007-08-11

This book really is "The Complete Book of Sauces". It would be hard to imagine what sauce recipe ISN'T in it. Not only does it contain virtually any kind of sauce recipe you could want, but it offers helpful ideas on what to serve with what. Also, the recipes are "doable" rather than some I've seen in other books that are so complex no one but a professional chef would even attempt them. In addition, the price was right, and it arrived very promptly in pristine condtion.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-10

Just the book I was looking for! Excellent coverage of sauces for beginners to "old hats"! Thanks!

4 out of 5 stars Numerous variations to try in a lifetime!.......2000-11-06

There are definitely more sauces in this book than you can possibly try. They are divided and arranged by type and purpose, which makes it easy to pick out the sauce that you need. Some of the ingredients are somewhat hard to find, but most recipes can be prepared with minimal fuss. My favorite part of this book is the marinades chapter.. you can combine a marinade with a similar sauce and end up with something spectacular. Another useful chapter is the fruit sauces chapter, which proved to be very valuable on that special occasion when you wanted to enhance the flavor of your desserts. No photos in this book though.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Sauces.......1999-12-04

This book is excellent, I have had success with every recipe I've tried. I refer to this book almost on a daily basis to make my dishes more interesting. If you buy only one sauce book this is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars One simple books adds fun and life to almost any dish........1998-10-10

It's now Oct 1998. I bought the book in 1990 when it first came out. I'm a business man, not a gourmet, but with this Sallie Williams book, polite lovely ladies have almost tackled me to get 'my recipes'. I have fun cooking because of this book, more than with any other cookbook. I pick a meat or vegetable, and pick a sauce. It always works, and leaves me feeling like I'm creating by selecting the combination of some dish with a sauce, plus dreaming up ways to display the food. So far it never seems to get boring, and after nine years there are still a lot of sauces I've not yet tried. I think the book will be with me for the duration. Highly recommended. The only downside is that 'favorite' sauces are easy to find in the book, and thus you have to avoid the temptation to stop exploring sauces not yet experienced.
