Book Description

Here is a holistic approach to childbirth that examines this profound rite-of-passage, not as a medical event, but as an act of self-discovery. Exercises and activities such as journal writing, meditation, and painting will help mothers analyze their thoughts and face their fears during pregnancy. For use during birth, the book offers proven techniques for coping with labor pain without drugs, a discussion of the doctor or midwife’s role, and a look at the father’s responsibilities. Childbirth education should also include what do expect after the baby is born. Here are baby basics, such as how to bathe a newborn, how to get the little one to sleep, and tips for getting nursing off to a good start. Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a process of continuous learning and adjustment; Birthing From Within provides the necessary support and education to make each phase of birthing a rewarding experience.

5 out of 5 stars Personalizing the birth experience.......2007-10-04

As a woman who's feeling cornered into a cesarean due to a stubborn breech baby, I am grateful that Birthing From Within approaches birth from all angles fairly. So many other resources out there seem to not acknowledge that a cesarean birth is still the miraculous birth of our children and that there are ways to personalize and take ownership of the experience, instead of feeling as if we have no control over what's happening to our bodies and our babies. I am taking a Birthing From Within class, as I was planning and preparing for that all natural childbirth experience--that just doesn't seem meant to be for us right now. At first, I felt a bit resentful and jealous that others in the class were all going to have their perfect birth experiences and I would be left out in the cold of the modern medical world. With the support of my doula and my teacher, I am feeling much more prepared to enter into this birth knowing that it is still ours. As an interesting note, Pam England birthed her first baby via cesarean--perhaps this is why she has more empathy and has the insight to offer women the ability to do some soul searching beforehand to come to terms with the process and how to heal, move on and have the birth experience that we want. I am very grateful for this resource.

4 out of 5 stars Facilitated self-exploration.......2007-09-28

Birthing from Within classes can be found all over, and can be a unique and powerful birth preparation. If you're planning to take a class, read this book first to get a sense of what the classes are supposed to entail, then interview the class instructor before signing up. Find out what you will be doing - be specific in your questions. I found that it's easy to call yourself a "Birthing from Within" instructor - it's no guarantee that the instructor will actually follow the principles and methods.

If you just plan to read the book, it's a nice guide to self-exploration. Some things might be tough to find the motivation to do without a teacher's encouragement and facilitation.

4 out of 5 stars New ways..........2007-08-14

to deal with birth. A new look at birth educations. I find it really helpful in classes. It is a great way to help people express themselves thru art. The author even has classes that can be attended.

5 out of 5 stars Touching and Inspiring.......2007-08-13

This is an excellent book for any woman going into pregnancy and birth. It will help you face your fears, accept what is to come, and make it the best possible experience you can have. The activities are especially helpful. I found this book to be vital in my preparation for a natural home VBAC. This book focuses on emotional preparation much more than physical facts, so don't be surprised that it pulls on your heartstrings and moves your emotions but doesn't give you the step by step labor instruction many other books have, since it's purpose is not to tell you how to labor, but to help you deal with the emotional rollercoaster labor can put you through.

Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Like a kind, very wise friend.......2007-07-29

This book is so good! I have searched and searched for a positive, helpful pregnancy/childbirth book and I finally found the one! I felt so good after reading this book, and read it in just two sittings because it is so interesting. The kindness that exudes from this book is amazing. After reading it I felt happy rather than more worried, even though it covers all the possible things you might encounter. It was like talking to a kind, very wise friend who has faith in you and your ability to cope. It was not preachy or pedantic or condescending- it inspires you rather than treats you like a "patient." It is full of very helpful things that you could only learn from experiencing birth yourself- it mentions many of the things that helped me in my first birth.

Book Description

This extra-ordinary sixty minute guided meditation by BC author and spiritual teacher, Jackie Haverty, was created to provide the listener with a profound, multi-dimensional experience in which the Higher Self is accessed for mystical insight and "true" healing. Through intent, the heart is opened to the timeless gifts of transformation and unconditional love from the Divine Self. This journey provides true liberation of our body, mind and spirit. Although primarily intended as a meditation tape, the soothing words by Jackie and the inspirational music by Paul Armitage make this CD a wonderful relaxation tool which can release tension and stress, inducing a healthful sleep.

Already in its THIRD PRINTING in less than one year, this success has inspired Jackie and Paul to release a second volume, entitled "Journey to the 5th Dimension" in February, 2004 (ISBN 1895814308).

Your Journey to the Crystal Palace begins with a deep, progressive relaxation during which you are encased in the loving presence of the white light. Continue your journey inward to your heart centre where you access the doorway to the magnificent Crystal Palace. Once inside the Crystal Palace, you will have the opportunity to absorb rays of healing light from all the colors of the rainbow. There are three large windows available to you. There is a window available for viewing past experiences with understanding, compassion and forgiveness; a window for viewing all possible future paths and choices; and a window for viewing solutions to problems and answers to questions.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Christal Palace.......2007-09-03

This is the most beautiful guided meditation I have ever experienced. The message that the author conveys is uncoditional love that you will find within yourself when you get in touch with your devine self - "the kingdom of god that is within you." - I would recommend this medication to everyone who believes in a higher self.

3 out of 5 stars Good for some, Not for others.......2007-07-09

I bought this guided meditaton to assist me in reaching a meditative state in which I could conduct my dicursive meditation as practiced by some Druids. The "Journey" as it turns out centers on a passage taken from the Bible in the Book of Matthew, Chapters 5 and 13. "The Kingdom of Heaven, which lies within you" is the passage.

This would make for excellent meditation for someone who is Christian or follows Christian Gnosticism. I myself am Druidic. Therefore being of Pagan belief and not necessarily believing in "Heaven" per se, I found the theme distracting and ineffective at inducing my meditative state.

Therefore, for me, it was no effective, but it would be ideal for some of different faiths. My advice, if you are pagan, go with some plain New Age music or record your own narrated guided meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guided Meditation.......2007-06-02

This is a fantastic guided meditation. I highly recommend to anyone thinking of purchasing this meditation. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad once you get past the beginning.......2007-05-13

Jackie has the annoying habit of smacking her lips after speaking...once you get past this, it is a very relaxing cd, but have seen nothing divine or otherwise.....

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful meditation cd........2006-02-09

I was blown away by the authors cd. Jounrney to The Crystal Palace. Jackie Haverty's voice is so soothing I began to relax almost immediatly. The back round music is so beautiful it to had an effect on me. I could feel my body, it felt like it was buzzing because of the energy. I actually met a beautiful Unicorn on my meditation. I would highly reccomend this to anyone who is looking for a high rate meditation cd that really and truly works...

    Book Description

Many people come to analysis appearing quite 'ordinary' on the surface. However, once below that surface, we frequently come into contact with something quite unexpected: 'extra-ordinary protections' created to keep at bay any awareness of deeply traumatic happenings occurring at some point in life.

Judith Mitrani investigates the development and the function of these protections, allowing the reader to witness the evolution of the process of transformation, wherein defensiveness steadily mutates into communication. She lucidly and artfully weaves detailed clinical observations with a variety of analytic concepts, and her original notions - including 'unmentalized experience' and its expression in enactments; 'adhesive pseudo-object relations' and the ways in which this contrasts and compares with normal and narcissistic object relations - provide valuable tools for understanding the infantile transference/countertransference and for the refinement of our technique with primitive mental states.

Ordinary People and Extra-Ordinary Protections will prove stimulating and accessible in its style and substance to a broad analytic readership, from the serious student of psychoanalysis to the most seasoned professional.

Judith L. Mitrani is a Training and Supervising analyst at both The Psychoanalytic Center of California and the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. She is the author of A Framework for the Imaginary: Clinical Explorations in Primitive States of Being and the co-editor (with Dr. Theodore Mitrani) of the book Encounters with Autistic States: A Memorial Tribute to Frances Tustin, and numerous published papers.

Dirt cupcake mix, as American as apple pie. Nipple lightener from Japan. Tick juice, indispensable in Venezuela for black magic love rituals. Sunglasses from Zimbabwe with shades cut from plastic juice bottles and no lenses. Korean disposable straw sandals made especially for mourners and corpses. Is this stuff cool or what? But wait--there's more. Flip through this book in search of international weirdness, and it's a pretty sure bet you'll wind up absorbing some sobering information about sex, death, destruction, poverty, and the arrogant ways of multinationals. Under the guise of an ultrahip consumer's guide to the world's nifty stuff--divided into sections labeled "Food," "Fashion," "Animals," "Body," "Soul" and "Leisure"--1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a subversive crusader for human rights and ecological awareness.

Sure, you can find out how to buy your very own Dom Perignon-flavored sorbet or a CD of "Music for Healthy Pets." But you'll also stumble upon objects like the cute little bright green Russian-made PFM-1 antipersonnel mine, "a favorite toy of generations of Afghan children" punished for their curiosity by a double whammy of liquid explosive and tiny blades. On other pages, seemingly innocuous objects--like the sweetly lumpy doll couples made of tree bark by Elliot Chitungu of Zimbabwe--turn out to have a bitter subtext. (Chitungu, who is gay, makes all his couples heterosexual; in his country, homosexuality is a criminal offense.) Other objects are examples of savvy recycling, like the paper made in Malawi from elephant dung and recycled cardboard.

With straightforward descriptions in both English and French, unblinking photographs of young people modeling even the most outré objects, and a Yellow Pages that includes information about little-known charitable organizations worldwide, this is a fun book with a heart of gold. --Cathy Curtis

    Book Description

A humorous and educational guide to "everyday" stuff from all over the world Things, objects, stuff, trinkets, tools, materials, gadgets, the things we use, abuse, throw away, cherish, depend on: these are the things we own, simple objects for our everyday lives. They may or may not hold special meaning to us, but their importance, as objects of cultural identity, is unmistakable.

Produced by COLORS under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, famous for his controversial Benetton campaigns, 1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a humorous and educational guide to stuff from all over the world. Discover the wonderful absurdity of a priest's portable mass-in-a-briefcase kit, or the stunning difference between flyswatters from Zimbabwe and South Korea. Ogle at the juxtaposition of neoprene surfing shoes and bullfighting slippers; have a gander at a can of blowfish soup. You'll see that what is ordinary halfway across the world (or perhaps for your neighbors across the street) may be totally foreign to you.

In case you see something that you absolutely must have, check out the yellow pages section at the end of the book; here you can find out where to get it and even how much it costs, as well as lots of little tidbits of interesting information to make your journey complete. Next time you pick up your toothbrush or comb your hair, you may think twice about the things that you use every day - perhaps they're not so ordinary after all.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars yes, bizarre!.......2003-11-14

This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.

Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

Objects: stuff, knick-knacks, toys, trinkets, tools, curios, gadgets. The things we use, abuse, collect, toss away, cherish, depend on or can't live without: these are the material goods that fill our lives. Those shown in 1000 EXTRA/ORDINARY OBJECTS may or may not hold special meaning to you, but their importance as objects of cultural identity is unmistakable.

Produced, under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, then design director of Colors magazine, 1000 EXTRA/ORDINARY OBJECTS truly illustrates Colors' motto that "diversity is good" and translates perfectly into a book that celebrates the intrinsic cultural differences in everyday objects.

Discover the efficiency of a priest's portable mass-in-a-briefcase and the wonderful practicality of a Venezuelan Urination Funnel for women. Ponder the juxtaposition of neoprene surfing shoes and bullfighting slippers; contemplate the multi-tasking inherent in English-language lessons printed on Japanese toilet paper; and the wishful thinking of Chinese Slimming Soap that promises to make you slender and fit. What could be a better combo than glue-on ... from Germany and the formidable Arabian Goat's Eye ...? Jaunting off on this global shopping trip, you'll see that objects completely foreign to you may be commonplace halfway across the world.

In case you see something that you absolutely must have, check out the Yellow Pages section at the end of the book. Here you can find out where to get it and how much it costs, and read fascinating tidbits of information to make your worldwide journey complete.

Next time you pick up your toothbrush or Ethiopian ear-cleaning spoon, you may think twice about the things that you use every day - perhaps they're not so ordinary after all.

    Book Description

When was the last time you saw the beauty in everyday objects? If you're like most people, you probably haven't paid much attention. To change all that, the authors of Extra Ordinary spotlight the simplest of objects and seemingly reinvent them into something new and unique.

In a world of high-tech and mass production, people live in a world ruled by excess, over stimulation, and even waste. "Within this existence, the role of creatives shouldn't exclusively be to meet client demands, or act as a vehicle for innovation, but to question the idea of the ordinary," the authors say.

This book will help designers reinvigorate their creativity and observe what they would normally ignore, discard, or forget. The authors do this by taking objects such as a bra, tofu, and plastic spoons, and transform them into an evening bag, a pencil holder, or a pair of eyeglasses. Each of the new products created from the things that surround us, is accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations and simple written explanations. The package is immediate, punchy, silly, and yet completely hysterical.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting Views.......2007-10-04

I thought this book was interesting for seeing how other people view certain items. It made me think about looking at things differently but wasn't what I expected when I bought it. I was looking for an educational book rather than a purely entertaining one. So look elsewhere for something that will actually TEACH you how to help you release your creativity.

5 out of 5 stars New View towards Design.......2005-10-28

The underlying concept behind this book is amazing. This book allows us to see/ begin to see/ begin to think differently from a different perspective. Ordinary objects that we use or view can be explored in so many different ways. The book doesn't just share different ways of seeing things but it actually gives us an opportunity to excersice our vision towards design.
The excersice helps us realize that without understanding/analyzing/disecting/ an object, it can't be seen in a different way.
I think it's a great book for especially designers. Great book for a humorous gift as well!!

4 out of 5 stars Weird or Creative.......2005-08-20

It reminded me of the "101 unuseless japanese inventions", but this is would be the recycled version. I mean that in a good way.

    extra-ordinary it is.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for normal you, and your abnormal friends!.......2005-06-16

    BRAS-SIERE (from extra-ordinary)

definition 1. A woman's undergarment worn to cover and support the breasts. It also gives contour to the breasts, there by enhancing the beauty.
    :
DEFINITION 3. A flexible material formed into the shape of a container used for carrying or storing items.

This book is for everybody unless he or she is creative enough to be seen by others as "weird". Filled with amusing pictures, Hisako and Takao, the authors of this book, challenge your concept of being "creative" that may be still in the cage of common sense.

I personally had a similar experience of transformation, if not a revolutionary one. When I was in Japan, I used to think the "kogyaru" fashion (consult wikipedia.org if you don't know the word) of Japanese highschool girls to be nothing but "weird". Soon after I moved to United States, I saw a series in Wired magazine --- known not as 'weird', but more as 'creative' --- featuring Japanese highschool girls' fashion. I started to view them, and other things, which I always thought to be weird, in a different way; they are indeed creative.

Twenty re-definitions --- or re-creations, I should rather say --- in this book will make your eyes pop and turn on your creative mind. Your life will be much more interesting one!

A great gift for normal you, and your abnormal friends who actually deserve to be acknowledged as creative people.

          Book Description

The fourth title in New Mexico Magazine's Artist Series showcases the work of Roxanne Swentzell, one of the most intriguing and acclaimed contemporary sculptors in the Southwest. Roxanne was born in 1962, the daughter of Rina Swentzell, a potter, architect, writer, and scholar from Santa Clara Pueblo, and Ralph Swentzell, a New Jersey-born philosophy professor at St. John's College in Santa Fe.

For her last two years of high school Roxanne attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where she was given the first exhibition of her clay figures. Later she studied at the Portland Museum Art School in Oregon. Today Roxanne's work, much of which is also produced in bronze limited editions, is collected internationally. It has earned numerous honors, including many first place and best of class awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market. Her work is extensively exhibited in museums and galleries, and in 1997, Emergence of the Clowns was part of an exhibition of Native American sculpture at the White House.

In this generously illustrated art book, Santa Fe writer Gussie Fauntleroy explores with Roxanne the ideals and beliefs that underpin her work. Her sculptures of human figures capture beauty that is unspoiled by glamour and enhanced by dignity, self-awareness, and humor. Along with her Pueblo community, she cherishes memory—the continuum of the ancestral past with present and future—which nourishes the wisdom to look beyond contemporary pop-culture idolatry and choose a more fundamental humanity. Her figures exalt the small, ordinary, everyday choices we make that define our integrity and enable us to become extra-ordinary.

Roxanne's many admirers love her art for its simplicity, humanity, humor and superior craftsmanship. This book enables readers to enjoy Roxanne's artwork in the company of her quiet and observant spirit.

          1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!!.......2007-09-28

I first read about this artist in New Mexico magazine, which had many pictures of her work in that and subsequent issues. Anyone considering this book should abandon that thought and order back issues of NM magazine featuring Roxanne Swentzell. The photos in the book are awful, limited and restrictive; some even appear defective in that at first it appeared to be a printing defect until closer examination revealed the problem was in the photo not in printing the book. I saw a broader range of exceptional photos and editorial assessment of her work in the NM magazines that are sorely lacking in this book.

1 out of 5 stars Powerful Artist Deserved Better Writer.......2004-09-17

Roxanne Swentzell is a unique and powerful artist and the plates in this book are well done. This art deserved a much better writer. The author Fauntleroy has no background or expertise in Native American or Fine Art and her text has many factual errors and suffers from a lack of understanding of art and Native culture. It is also poorly written. Publishers should have hired a Native American author. There are many who would have had the ability to put this exciting young artist in the proper context.

          5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2003-12-07

It is the first time I bought an art book on the spot in a book store. I had never heard of Roxanne Swentzell before, but was immediately fascinated by the beauty and expression of her clay figures. Her sculptures speak thousands words about the human soul. The pictures are remarkable and commentarie just what they need to be. A beautiful book that I am very happy to have around and show to my friends.

            Book Description

Small and big persons, disabled and elderly, expectant mothers and children. Everyone will fall into one of these categories at least once in their lifetime. In fact, demographics show that at least two of every five people vary from the norm in height, width, and weight at any given time. Yet customarily, designers design for adults of regular size with standard abilities. Written by an expert in human factors and ergonomics, Extraordinary Ergonomics explores designing for population groups that do not meet the customary standards in age, size, and abilities. Underscoring the need for extraordinary ergonomics, the book illustrates various approaches to measuring the characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of those who differ from the norm. It provides the how-tos of designing for people who are smaller, weaker, or bigger, discusses specifically the design for persons with disabilities and the aging population, and covers human factors engineering for expectant mothers and ergonomics for children and teenagers. The author explains how to assess and determine abilities and needs and demonstrates how to design tools, homes, and environments to make working space safe and living space easy.
