Book Description

Bring your chickens home to roost in comfort and style! Whether you're keeping one hen in a small backyard or 1,000 hens in a large free-range pasture, you will find the perfect housing plan in this comprehensive handbook.

Author and farmer Judy Pangman combed the country to select these 45 plans for housing both laying hens and meat birds (chickens or turkeys). The coops range from fashionable backyard structures featured in the annual Seattle Tilth City Chickens Tour and the Mad City Chickens Tour in Madison, Wisconsin, to the large-scale, moveable structures Joel Salatin has fashioned for Polyface Farm in Virginia.

You'll also find plans for converting trailer frames, greenhouses, and backyard sheds; low-budget alternatives for working with found and recycled materials; and simple ways to make waterers, feeders, and nestboxes. A gallery of color photographs provides other creative ideas to get you going. With basic building skills, a little elbow grease, and this book of plans, you've got all you need to shelter your flock.

3 out of 5 stars No plans in this book! Just ideas.......2007-08-11

This book would have gotten 5/5 stars from me if it read, "Chicken Coops: 46 Building IDEAS/PICTURES for housing your flock." There are absolutely NO PLANS IN THIS BOOK!!! If your looking for with actual plans in it, try "Poultry House Construction, by Michael Roberts." That book is under a hundred pages and is a wealth of knowledge (with various plans in it). If your looking for great chicken coop IDEAS than this is your book. There are a lot of great ideas in this book, and if your good with planning and tools than this is all you need. As I said if the book supplemented the word Ideas instead of plans I would have given it five starts. This is a great book, it just has a misleading title. Sorry Ms. Pangman I can't give you 5 stars when your book doesn't live up to it's title.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Coops - 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock.......2007-07-26

Lately our garden has been over run with weeds and grasshoppers, I am planning to build a small coop to house and protect a few chickens, mostly for weed control, but a few eggs would be a good bonus. This book is full of ideas. I can use the ideas from many of the plans to design a coop to fit our needs. I recommend this book to any one who has a need for a small coop or a small area for chickens.

2 out of 5 stars Not what the tittle implies.......2007-07-11

Should I have read the reviews, including that of the author... I would probably not have this book on my shelves.

The book is interesting and amusing to see how different people has built different Coops and Houses for their birds but if you are looking for (as I was) real plans and how to build kind of book... you should look somewhere else.

What I have learned... is to read reviews and don't take book titles literally.

3 out of 5 stars Can't speak for book, just service.......2007-06-27

Since I ordered the book for a chicken-raising friend, I can't really speak for the book itself. It did take forever to get here though- several books I'd ordered through the marketplace came form various areas of the country days (or weeks) sooner!

2 out of 5 stars Coffee table chicken coop book.......2007-04-23

I was aware that there were no building plans (based on other reviews), but I wasn't too worried because of I can make materials lists pretty easily from drawings. However, I was surprised that the drawings in this book have incorrect measurements (rather frustrating). This is a coffee table book, and even as that, it's not so exciting. There were really only a few designs that broke away from the square-box chicken coop idea. The best thing about this book is the presentation of the idea of keeping chickens as being an urban middle-class phenomenon. It was good for ideas, but it's not a keeper.

Book Description

Cows and horses, donkeys and mules, sheep and goats, pigs and fowl, even llamas are living on small farms and in backyard barnyards throughout the United States. But how and where are these critters being housed?

Author Carol Ekarius knows. In How to Build Animal Housing, she provides dozens of plans--with illustrated, step-by-step instructions--for species-specific shelters that are well ventilated, safe, appropriate for the animals, appealing, convenient, and a solid value for their owners.

The book is essential reading for anyone interested in animal health and welfare. It includes complete plans and step-by-step, illustrated instructions for sheds, coops, hutches, multipurpose barns, and economical easy-to-build windbreaks and shade structures. Ekarius covers new high-tech, portable structures made of plastics and fabrics, such as hoop houses and hen spas, as well as more traditional alternatives, such as straw-bale structures. Always practical, she enumerates the advantages and disadvantages of ready-to-build kits and modular barnyard buildings and includes designs for watering systems, feeders, chutes, stanchions, and more--the essentials that help owners keep their animals healthy and happy.

Ekarius wisely emphasizes the importance of careful planning, choosing an appropriate housing site, and complying with local zoning regulations; pest control, basic housing maintenance, and insurance costs are also discussed. Real-world advice from farmers and veterinarians on the types of housing and facilities animals like best enliven the text throughout.

How to Build Animal Housing is the most comprehensive and useful guide of its kind. For small-scale farmers, hobby farmers, do-it-yourselfers, and animal lovers, this book is indispensable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-09-09

This book is absolutely fantastic for those who are just starting out. There are plans and pictures for every style and taste you may be searching for. It's easy to read...with great graphics.

5 out of 5 stars handy.......2007-08-10

As a hobby, I enjoy capturing wild animals and putting them in cages. But I am fairly new to this hobby, so I do not own a lot of cages. This book has helped me learn how to build my own animal cages.

As a child, I enjoyed going to the zoo. But something was always missing in the zoo experience. Now that I am an adult, and capturing my own wild animals, I feel more fulfilled.

When I see an animal in a cage, it makes me feel important and powerful, especially if I'm the one who captured the animal.

3 out of 5 stars Important details left out........2007-08-08

This is a great book for ideas. It falls very short on important details.

This book is about building animal shelters, but none of these plans
have a listing of the parts needed. This is doubly important because
these are complicated plans. I would like to build the rabbit house,
but now I am having to approximate what I need. The author needs to
remember that someone wanting to use this book might live 20 miles away
from the hardware store.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything, not enough details on any specific group of live-stock.......2007-07-24

I was looking for a book on how to build satisfactory chicken and duck housing. This book has a couple of plans for chicken coops, but not enough to buy the book. Why did I give it four stars then? Because the book is designed to give you building plans for various types of live-stock (pigs, hourses, cows, chickens, goats, rabbits, and others). The book does give you 60 plans like it says it does, but there is never more than 2 and at the most three on any specific animal.

This book does have a lot of good information in it beyond the housing plans. It has minimal spacing for your animals, safety and health of your animals, plus it has lots of good pieces of advice throughout the book that has been picked up over 30 plus years. If your like me and are looking to build housing for a specific type of live stock then this is probably not the best book for you (for chickens I would suggest "Poultry House Construction" by Michael Roberts). However, if your looking to build housing for various breeds of live-stock then this book would be a wise purchase. However, a materials list would have been nice (not enough books give them).

2 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-07-16

I was a bit disappointed to find the plans in this book are USDA plans from the 1970s and were not in my view very creative or innovating or interesting. The rabbit house was just a shed of small cages, aimed at someone raising rabbits for food, I suppose, and not in any way pleasant for the rabbits.

5 out of 5 stars Horse Housing.......2005-09-12

This is the best book on the subject that I've seen. The topic is presented in a professional way so that an amature builder can understand. It's accompanied by color photos and simple professionally drafted diagrams. I would recommend this reference to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Positively - A Pragmatic, Professional Resource.......2003-04-16

Horse Housing provides pragmatic advice on building and remodeling barns and sheds. This is a first rate publication offering the reader wonderful photographs and easy-to-understand illustrations combined with top notch writing by wordsmiths, Richard Klimesh and Cherry Hill. As a Texas State Certified General Appraiser of real estate since 1977, including rural properties, I need to be up-to-date regarding the details of what constitutes well-constructed horse facilities. This excellent book is a professional resource that facilitates a more precise completion of my assignments. Positively, this book belongs on your shelf when you start your next stable, barn or shed project!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Not Just Horsing Around!.......2003-04-15

As a State Certified Texas General Real Estate Appraiser, I have had the opportunity to view improvements such as barns and stables on numerous rural properties. "Horse Housing" is an excellent resource for rural appraisers. I'm not just "horsing around" when I say that if owners of some of the properties I've viewed had utilized tips in this book during their construction project they could have built a superior instead of poor or average structure . Texas is home to more than 1 million horses, about 15% of the total U.S. horse population. However, while people tend to picture horses in rural settings, the counties with the largest numbers of horses are in metropolitan Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio. So this book's guidance on zoning, building codes, and ideas for building an attractive/functional structure that is homogenous to an urban neighborhood is vital to a property owner/investor. It sounds like the reviewer from Michigan should have contacted her local Home Depot or lumberyard for advice on building stalls rather than expect detailed instructions in "Horse Housing."

5 out of 5 stars Horse Housing....GREAT!!!!.......2003-04-13

I actually received this book as a gift and found it to be WONDERFUL and also very helpful! It answered all of the questions that I had running through my mind and also answered some that I had not even thought of! I would definitely recommend this book no matter what!

5 out of 5 stars the horse barn bible.......2003-04-12

If you are going to build or remodel a horse barn the right way, so it functions correctly and lasts, this is the book to buy. good construction and functionality are key to making anything work, and it is obvious that this author builder isn't just a weekend trailrider. his co author's books occupy an entire shelf of my library. this book is written by equine professionals, and contain solid wisdom from a lifetime of experience. the layouts are designed for the horses AND the owners, and to withstand the rigors of country lifestyle. i recently saw one of the authors barns with over 3 feet of heavy snow on its roof and know them to have withstood incredible windloads.

this knowledge of construction and layout could save any potential barn builder or remodeler hundreds of times the cost of this book. it will protect your investment, your horses, and will help you enjoy your equine experience from more than just in the saddle. this book is not only about method and layout, it is about the phiosophy of enjoying the fruits of doing something right.

Book Description

Effective management requires knowledge, dedication, and a sincere interest in the well-being of horses. In this thoroughly updated second edition of her best-selling classic, Cherry Hill explains how to be a responsible steward of the land while providing horses with the best care possible. Drawing on decades of personal experience and recommendations from hands-on Extension agents throughout North America, Hill provides detailed, practical information designed to help readers develop and refine their “horsekeeping consciousness.”

A thorough understanding of horses is critical to good horsekeeping, so Hill begins by explaining the behavior and the physical and emotional needs of the horse. She encourages readers to choose a management method that fits their lifestyle and locale. She then explains how to maximize efficiency through careful planning of facilities and implementation of diligent management routines that keep horses happy, healthy, and safe.

Well organized and generously illustrated with color photographs and instructive plan drawings, Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is packed with information that horse owners need. Acreage selection, layout design, and checklists for daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal management routines are just a few of the essential topics covered in this invaluable reference.

Since it was first published in 1991, Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage has sold more than 160,000 copies. This new edition is full-color and has been thoroughly redesigned, revised, expanded, and updated.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent planning guide.......2007-06-27

This book is a great resource for those wishing to build an equine facility - on any scale. However, this is not a guide book for horse ownership. If you board your horse somewhere, you do not need this book. If you are shopping for land and want to build your own horse place, then this book is perfect. If you are trying to figure out if your set up is safe and good for your horses, then get this book. If you are dedicated to making the best out of your land and your horse, then this book is the perfect resource, and it will help you decide if your land is right for horses or if horses are right for your land. Appropriate land use is important, and Cherry Hill shows how to incorporate horses into your land management practices - or is it incorporating good land management practices into your horsey haven? Her ideas and standards for barn design are also good industry standards. I highly recomend this book for architects and land planners who design equestrian homes/communities/barns.

Excellent book for all. I am particularly pleased with the practical information available to the fairly inexperienced. I have a very good picture of how to layout and set up my facility based on my needs and future plans for my horses. I would recommend this particularly to those who are starting from scratch with setting up their barn/stable.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Book.......2007-01-06

We have referred to this book numerous times while constructing our small horse barn. We've found it extremely helpful in many ways.

3 out of 5 stars Equine enthusiast.......2007-01-04

This book is well written and easy to read. The writer very clearly states that she geared her book for the 'perfect' set-up. Unfortunately, that rarely occurs and those of us who have less than perfect begin to ask whether we should have horses at all - not a fair position. There are many of us who board and will never be able to obtain a 60x100 pipe corral or three feedings a day which the author recommends.

Not all of us deal with blizzards, drifting or falling snow, water troughs frozen over, etc. So, the reader may end up ignoring large sections of the text no matter how useful.

As a resource for setting up a horse property, the book has something to offer, however, not as much as I had hoped.

It's raining cats and dogs! Good thing Rover is snuggled safe and dry inside his doghouse--until, one by one, a soggy menagerie of creatures shows up looking for a cozy place to sit out the storm. But who's the very unwelcome surprise visitor? Skunk, of course. Suddenly that doghouse isn't quite so crowded after all!

5 out of 5 stars Makes my 3-year-old laugh every time!.......2007-09-27

I'll never forget the first time I read this book to my 3-year-old daughter - she started laughing about halfway through the book, and by the end we were both giggling up a storm. We've read this book every night before bed ever since. Needless to say, this is currently her favorite book.

The text is simple, consise and short, which is nice for the parent who may be reading this book at the end of the day. And the illustrations are captivating. They draw my daughter in to the story as she looks for Rover, the cat, the squirrel, the racoon, the snake and the mouse on selected pages. And the part that consistently gets her giggling is the repeated rhyming text in the middle of the book that always ends with, "Move over, Rover!"

5 out of 5 stars New Favorite.......2007-04-11

My twins received this book when they were 18 months old and have loved it! Now they tell each other, "move over, Rover" and "skit-skat, Cat" all the time they love to talk about the stinky skunk. I have since been giving this book as a 2-year-old birthday present and everyone we've given it to says how much their children enjoy it, too. With great illustrations and fun concepts, we highly recommend this book.

As a former school librarian, I can say I love this picture book. The second time we read it, my 3-year-old grandchildren & I were delighted to realize that the skunk is visible in the doghouse all along--if you look closely.

I live, breathe horses. Ever since the age of 2, when I rode my first horse I have been as they say "horse crazy". I ride horses alot for 4-H and for my school's Equestrian Team and when I saw this book in my Horse Illistrated Magazine and instintly wanted to get it. I looked online for it and found it on its original website, but I didn't want to pay the full price. I searched around an found the best deal here on Amazon.com I read the book cover to cover and still constintally (sp?) look at it. Its a dream of mine to open my own horse barn someday and this book has been a real instiration and a enjoyable book for me!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Horse Barns.......2007-01-18

As a lover of horses and pictoral books on design, I have been looking for this type of book on horse barns for quite some time. This book contains a well thought out range of historic and new equine related buildings that have been beautifully photographed. The descriptive passages relating to each property give a very personal and charming look at the development, building process and use of the buildings. My interest in the book was primarily in the photographs which are not over powered by the text. I have purchased a number of other books on the subject but they do not compare to the quality of this publication. For horse lovers, would be barn builders and lovers of unique architecture, I highly recommend "Ultimate Horse Barns".

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Accommodations for Prize Horses.......2007-01-04

And I thought that people spent a lot of money on houses. Then again, with horses of the caliber being housed here, I suppose the cost of the Ultimate Horse Barns being shown here isn't significant after all. You could build nearly any of them for say $4 to $5 million. Needless to say these are not little sheds just to keep the horse out of the rain.

The buildings included here range from new construction to buildings that are well over a hundred years old. Many of these buildings are part of institutions such as the University of Vermont, the Kiwanis Club of West Toronto. Some belonged to the rich and famous, such as Vanderbilt. Some are working horse farms, but with a specialty in breeding or training high end horses.

Note though that these are working barns. There are horses here, horses being groomes, trained, or like 'Bailey' on page 125 looking out of his stall as if to say, 'OK, it's morning, where's my breakfast.'

5 out of 5 stars Horse lovers Will like this book.......2007-01-16

The pictures are amazing, the stables exotic. This book is different in a sense that it offers horse lovers a chance to see not only beautiful pictures of horses but gorgeous images of breathtaking and pristine stables, many with exquisitte and unique architecture. Information is presented from a unique perspective to those who love the majestic. Good price too ... here at Amazon. I originally saw the book listed for 40 dollars in a catalog and was willing to pay that price, but did an Amazon search and got it for much less.

5 out of 5 stars A book ever horse owner can dream about.......2007-01-12

A great coffee table book for the horse lover in the family. The pictures of these fairy tales stables around the world will make you want to go out an buy a lottery ticket.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-01-04

I had seen a brief write-up in a magazine and searched for the book on Amazon. The photography is absolutely stunning. The different locations featured in the book make it interesting and the stables are all unique. Visitors to our own farm immediately pick-up the book. And, it was a great hit with our Pony Club kids. I would recommend this for anyone who loves horses or has an interest in architechure.

3 out of 5 stars Stable Envy.......2007-01-03

This is a lovely (coffee table style) book with beautiful photography and a description of some of the most "majestic spaces" for horses on the planet. My only complaint -- and it is a major one -- is that the print describing the pictures is so small that I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. I don't understant why such small print was used. It spoiled an otherwise magnificent book.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend reading for intelligent animal lovers.......2000-07-07

I picked this book up in the gift shop of the San Diego Zoo, one of the few of substance they had. Even for me, a casual, but intelligent zoo visitor, this was worth $30.00. There is much more to animal captivity than I realized. Every zoo has two sides: the happy, visitor side, and the business/breeding side. Everyone knows about the happy side of a zoo. This helps lift the curtain on the other side of animal management and makes me even more appreciative of the huge expense and efforts of countless thousands of dedicated people who toil in the background. Articles on anesthesia of large animals, ethics of zoos, breeding, all are informative, basic information that the informed animal lover should know about. Although this is written for other zoo professionals, I recommend it to the average Amazon browser who wants to dig a little deeper into life and its mysteries. Because these are articles from technical journals, they can be read in any order and used as a reference book. There is an excellent bibliography after each chapter, although for the layman it is doubtful if they would be read. At any rate, I'm glad I bought this book.

4 out of 5 stars Updates Crandall's "Management of Wild Mammals in Captivity".......1998-08-22

This long awaited volume updates Crandall's long standing and now out-of-print classic "Management of Wild Mammals in Captivity." Contains a total of 48 separate contributions from 76 different authors covering a huge variety of topics including: Basic Husbandry; Feeding and Nutrition of Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores; Exhibition Techniques; Behavior; Reproduction; and more. An essential reference for anyone maintaining mammals in captivity. Illustrated with some b/w photos & drawings, numerous graphs and tables, and five appendices. This book comes in a paperback as well as a hardcover edition.
