4 out of 5 stars Ever had an airplane sketch "trapped" inside you?.......1998-03-10

Draw 50 Airplanes has been around for a while. I'm glad that it is still in print. Wish it had been around when I was a kid, doodling airplanes. A bunch of my favorites are there: Sopwiths, P-40s, Spitfires, F-86 Sabres, P-38s. Hopefully, someday, there will be a revised edition that can capture some late arrivals to the first century of flight that today's kids really like- the Space Shuttle, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk. There are dozens of "how to sketch", "how to draw" titles out there. This is not one of those books. This book skips the nuances of perspective and the agony of descriptive geometry. It is not about fine art... it is not about drafting... When you sign a note to a friend, did you ever want to be able to add a quick Spitfire with a flourish? One that someone else thinks looks like a Spitfire? Or how about a sketch of the Wright Flyer? This is THAT kind of a book. This is about the serious business of producing a happy characture of the airplane that dances in your head. It will egg you on until you pick up a pencil and make an airplane appear on the page. It will help you perfect that skill. A curved line here, a pair of straight lines there. One pencil stroke at a time. And it obviously wasn't written just for kids. This book can help just about anyone create some really neat airplane doodles. Who knows what comes from that... So many rich experiences in life depend on having some early successes, the hopeful satisfaction that causes you to press onward... J. Campbell Martin

1 out of 5 stars It isn't really a hardback........2007-09-23

I have the entire Honor Harrington series, and have added the hardback editions that were originally only published in paperback. (On Basilisk Station, the Honor of the Queen,The Short Victorious War, Field of Dishonor, and Flag in Exile.) When I saw More Than Honor listed as hardback, I assumed it was a real hardback special edition as were the others I have listed. However, this is merely a paperback that has been hardbacked. In order to do this, the pages themselves must be trimmed, and the hard cover is glued onto the book's endpages. If I'd wanted to hardback my paperbacks, I could have gotten it done for a bit less, as there are companies that offer this service. Since what I received should, in my opinion, have been advertised as a rebound paperback with hard covers, I was a tad miffed. Unless you really want a hard bound paperback copy of the book, which is itself well worth the reading, don't bother with this edition. You can purchase a realio truelio paperback, for far less, and get the same stories.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional!.......2006-07-07

Another exception book by David Weber in the Honor Harrington series. I love the female heroine, which is not common in the sci-fi genre of this type, and she is totally believable, totally relatable, and simply amazing! I have read each and every book of this series and except for one, I found them all to be equally compelling. Now, I want one of those cats! (read the book to find out what I mean!)

4 out of 5 stars Background info on the Honorverse........2005-12-10

More Than Honor is a collection of short stories set in David Weber's Honorverse, or the universe of Weber's Honor Harrington series. This book contains three short stories and one essay, none of which are about Harrington herself, but provide lots of background information enhancing the reader's understanding of the Honerverse. The first story, Weber's A Beautiful Friendship, recounts the first contact between humans and treecats, and how the relationshihp between the two species developed. We learn much from this story about the 'cats and their culture. David Drake checks in with the next story, A Grand Tour, about Hakyon Nessler, who encounters some disreputable naval officers committing an act of piracy, and how he takes matters into his own hands in dealing with them. S.M. Stirling delivers the third story, A Whiff of Grapeshot, set on Haven. This story is about Esther McQueen, the head of the military, and the suppression of the Leveller Revolt. The essay, The Universe of Honor Harrington, is written by Weber himself. Weber gives us a condensed history of the Honorverse, with some added insight into the technology and science of the the Honor Harrington universe, as well as the history and the political landscapes of the star nations within that universe. If you're looking for an Honor Harrington story, you'll want to skip this book, but if you would like to deepen your understanding of the Honorverse, then More Than Honor is an oustanding read.

5 out of 5 stars The Background Builds.......2005-06-11

This is the second collection of shorts built around the "Honorverse" of David Weber. In this one, Honor Harrington does not appear at all but that doesn't stop it from being a good read. It consists of 3 short fiction stories and 1 "background" essay.

"A Beautiful Friendship" is by Weber. It details the story of Stephanie Harrington, Honor's ancestor, and her place as the first human to be adopted by a treecat. It is a good adventure story of an intelligent but headstrong young girl on a frontier planet. The genes that will eventually be passed on to Honor are present and visible.

"A Grand Tour" is the work of David Drake. It tells the story of an aristocratic scholar form Manticore who learns of an act of piracy by a Havenite ship. Since he has a reserve naval commission, he takes matters into his own hands using, of all things, a light cruiser won in a poker came. It comes across much more believably than it sounds.

"A Whiff of Grapeshot" is from S. M. Stirling. It takes place entirely on Haven and tells the story of the suppression of the Leveler revolt alluded to in some of the Honor Harrington stories.

"The Universe of Honor Harrington" is the background essay from Weber. In it, he details humanities march to the stars, describes the technology that makes it possible and looks at the political systems of Manticore and some of the other polities encountered in his series. It is well worth the read for fans.

This is an excellent little volume.

This author's advice is direct and simple and seems very good for getting the reader started immediately on organizing. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars "Satan,get thee behind me!".......2006-01-10

If you're anything like me,you've been fighting clutter all your adult life.Reading about how to control clutter to me is like reading recipes is to my wife. After all this reading we'll look at each other and say,"Let's go to the Mall, and then out to eat."Although newspapers and magazines are continually carrying articles about clutter, they're as common as those on energy conservation. The best book I've come across, several years ago, was "Clutter's Last Stand" by Don Aslett(see my review of December 29,2005).Despite my best intentions and efforts Clutter still stands.
When I came across Adler's book, and already having been familar with his other book,"Outwitting Squirrels",I thought it would be well worth reading. Both of these books are to the point, totally all encompassing, full of humor and will describe both you and your cluttering instincts to a tee.Whether reading this book will help you turn your habits around or will become another addition to the 'pile' ,all depends on you.So what's new about raising Hell on Saturday nite and reading the Bible come Sunday morning?Anyway, you gotta keep trying, just think how it would be if you didn't try.I am reminded of Larry McMurtry's novel "Cadallic Jack" and the old fellow who had his house stuffed with bird nests he had collected over the years.
I'll give you a little personal example.I came into a small collection of matchbooks and have no interest in them.Come to think of it I hardly see them anymore.I have offered them to several, but to date no takers. Now is the time to take advice from my title.Get rid of them!
The one big thing that comes into play with clutter is that it definately involves those we live with.Somebody elses clutter is a lot more easier to get rid of than your oun.Now if you want to really declare war on it,exchange control over one anothers clutter. However;one should also discuss divorce expenses before embarking on a War on Clutter..If you think Bush bit off a big one with his War on Terror, you're in for a biiiig surprise!
Don't loose heart completely.Just like his book shows how you can still continue to feed backyard birds and still live in peace with squirrels,he gives some of the same help in living with clutter. If all else fails, organized clutter beats disorganized clutter every time.My wife and I have declared two areas in our home off limits over clutter.I have half of the basement for my 7000 books, puzzle and other collections and she 3 closets and a bedroom,as a result of empty-nesting,for her treasures. The rest of the house is neat as a pin and off limits to clutter.
I think the best laugh in this book is where Bill talks about the clutter of hair shampoo and and conditioners ..check out 151.
while most advice on clutter deals with getting rid of clutter;Adler takes it a step further and gives some good suggestions on how to manage it,if you can't eliminate it all together.
While Adler gives us a great war cry,"Don't bring it home";an old friend of mine gave me this piece of wisdom,"Every thing you get, takes looking after."

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Helpful.......2003-05-17

Bill Adler, Jr. is hilarious. If you don't get anything but a good laugh from this book, it's worth it. He has a great sense of humor and he knows how to make decluttering fun and lighthearted. He gives good tips and a different insight which you may or may not agree with(choose and use those which you think will work for you). I have read a lot of material on decluttering and organizing and this book was still helpful, enlightening, and just plain fun to read.

Drawing upon the sparse tranquility of Japanese design, architect and Tokyo resident Azby Brown explains how to live comfortably in limited or overcrowded domains. By rethinking our approach to space, utilizing seemingly dead areas (under-floor or under-stairs storage, for example), creating multipurpose or convertible areas, and reconsidering layout, we can make the most of what we have. Some of these homes carry Eastern minimalism to an extreme that clutter-prone Westerners may not be comfortable with, but there are plenty of ingenious furniture, storage, and planning solutions nevertheless. --Amy Handy

      Book Description

Small Spaces is about living comfortably and using space wisely, and where better to find ideas on that subject than Japan, one of the world's most urban and densely populated countries? Tokyo resident Azby Brown, a distinguished architect and designer, has assembled dozens of creative solutions to space and storage problems, illustrating them with photographs and plans of actual living environments in contemporary homes. The key to his approach is what might be called "The Three Cs"-compact, comfortable, and convenient. Use of space is reconsidered, with easy living always the uppermost goal. A living room is opened up by creating level changes or "joining it with the exterior." A staircase can double as a chest of drawers, a space beneath the floor can serve as a kitchen pantry or hiding place for a disappearing bed: an adjustable table can serve different purposes at different heights. From top to bottom, in bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and hall, Azby Brown presents solutions to the problems of inner space, illustrated with dozens of full-color photographs, drawings, and architectural plans. Small Spaces will be a lifesaver for all those with growing families, shrinking resources, and limited room to grow-or indeed anyone who wants to transform a disorganized, cluttered environment into an orderly, attractive living area.

5 out of 5 stars small spaces with hugh ideas.......2007-01-28

This book is so ingenious that it inspired me to change careers, and make a few changes around the house myself.

4 out of 5 stars title should be changed to "Build built-in furniture".......2006-04-10

The title should be "build built-in furniture to get rid of your space problems."

I think the ideas are worth considering: sure, if you have chairs for desks and vanities that slide right in, you can save a lot of space. Yes, build little drawers out of the stair case, and nifty pull out cabinets everywhere. Certainly having less furniture and more built -ins is the best way to reduce clutter. Yes, build underground "closets" in your floorboards and crawl space.

However, for most young people and for renters, the solutions are not practical because of lack of investment capital or long term plan for a space. Hiring carpenters to construct these designs would be of prohibitive cost for most, except for the wealthy.

I see from this book that Schindler and Neutra and all the modernists got lots of their ideas from the Japanese built-in solution.

2 out of 5 stars Ranked #6 out of 7 "small decor" books.......2005-02-14

I ranked this next to the bottom of 7 "decorating small spaces" books I bought. This author is a contradiction in terms: a minimalist who loves complexity! If you like Asian, bare-bones, neutral-hued decor & have construction skills, you may like the extensively detailed drawings of intricate building projects (i.e, a nine-part modular table-seating-storage unit with more uses than anyone would possibly give it) & the helpful photos. But you'll still be irked that sq. footage is never given. If you're like me (American condo owner), you'll find this book, written for and featuring Japanese homeowners, not adaptable to your needs in any way.

5 out of 5 stars An indoctrination in organization.......2003-01-11

As someone whose prospective first house is likely to be small--and even smaller inside--I've been looking around for useful ideas that will help me choose a home into which my Stuff will fit. (That's not just stuff; that's George Carlin-type STUFF, and it requires serious storage.) We're not just talking a smaller McMansion, but homes where the master bedroom is, on average, 10'x9' with badly placed doorways.

Azby Brown's book was an education in understanding the options even a small or oddly shaped space can afford. Though most of the actual implementations discussed would certainly work better in a Japanese home than in a '50s era raised ranch, the *ideas* are the thing. And these ideas are outstanding. Every inch of space is used to beautiful effect. Every opportunity is considered.

Especially choose this book if you're planning to remodel, as expert contractors and cabinetmakers will benefit from these pages; nevertheless, _Small Spaces_ is for anyone who still thinks that light neutrals and pint-sized furnishings are the only way to manage.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves space on your underfloor shelf.......2002-12-27

Azby Brown lives in Japan, and has written a number of books about Japanese design, or carpentry, from the perspective of a close observer.

This book deals with design and product approaches to living in small spaces without clutter. The premise is that the smaller a space is, the more it needs to appear empty if living in it is to be fully comfortable and satisfying. This isn't a book on how to load more gear into more "storage solutions", though some unusual solutions like underfloor storage are elaborated.

Granted a lot of this stuff is not going to be transferable to American houses, and some of the details, like miraculously small appliances are not even well illustrated (most ilustration are very good). But then there is a huge market for books covering professionally created 25 000 square foot spaces in Carmel by the Sea, or whatever, and I am not likely to fully implement ideas from those books either. This book is visually appealing and simple to understand for young children. Basic facts about our solar system that will make recall easy for youngsters (my son now 4 loved this book at age 3!). This book is a great place to fule a child's interest in the night sky and our place in this vast universe.

5 out of 5 stars Great additional resource of basic facts.......2003-11-27

My 3rd grade son reads below grade level and is a very visual learner. This book is full of great, real, photos and straight-forward facts. He loved reading it and looking at the photos. It really helped reinforce what he was being taught in school about the solar system!

4 out of 5 stars Just The Facts, Mamm........2003-04-10

PLANETS AROUND THE SUN works rather well as an introductory book to the planets of the solar system in the Milky Way. The book briefly discusses the nine planets of the Milky Way, the Earth's Moon, and the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The last page in the book displays a chart that illustrates, among other things, the distance of each planet from the sun; each planet's orbital period; amount of moons; and the amount of rings. There are several basic space facts scattered throughout the thirty pages, e.g. the winds on Neptune blow at over 700 mph. The thing that separates this book from others of it's kind that I have read are it's bright and vivid pictures. The pictures are full of color and contrast and bring to life the uniqueness of our solar system. Overall this is a wonderful book to introduce children to the wonder and miracle of space.

4 out of 5 stars An astronomy book that covers the basic facts.......2002-10-17

"Planets Around the Sun," by Seymour Simon, combines many astronomical photographs with an easy-to-read text. The book is a basic overview of the planets of the solar system. A sample of the writing style: "We live on a planet called Earth. [new page] Earth is one of the nine planets that travel around the sun."

The book includes a comparative chart that lists each planet along with basic facts: distance from the sun, orbital period, number of moons (if any), etc. The book sticks to only the most basic facts; for example, the moons of Mars and other planets are not mentioned by name.

      2 out of 5 stars Inspiring, but..........2006-05-21

Perhaps I just misunderstood. But this book just wasn't what I thought it was.

I was really excited when I ordered this book. I just couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I wanted to see how things were done, what materials I'd have to buy (and hopefully where I could find them) and generally find out how to make this magic happend...

      But no such luck.

I actually don't quite understand this book - and it really doesn't contain any text to misunderstand. It does contain a lot of nice pictures (and I mean a lot), even though some of the ideas displayed should perhaps rather have been made of plastic and varnish, glue and gypsum for people out of this world (really, some of the things displayed are really really ugly!). Some of the ideas don't have anything to do with anything real. These are glossy patios suitable for I don't know whom. But perhaps that really doesn't matter - at least if the book is just intended to be a good idea bank for different groups of people. But I found no warning signs on Amazon.

I don't like to slaughter things, but then again I never review things as I'm doing now without having a very strong point in either direction, i.e. positive or negative... Sadly, this book had a negative impact on me, period!

      You make the math:

The book has no functionality (other than ideas) for the DIY person.
The book is in fact just a big "Ikea brochure" - a lot of pictures, but little or no text.
Which brings me to the last point: The little text that actually is to be found is often wrong (typical copy-and-paste (or find-and-replace) Word failures) like "Courtesy of Courtesy of Action Concrete Services". For any serious publisher, one failure as this one should have been enough, but this particular blunder can be found evenly distributed over the entire book! Sorry, I just can't live with that, especially since the book is in fact nothing else than what Google would have given me with a few keystrokes.

So: If you don't have Google, buy this book! That's my advice. Or, if you do have Google but want a glossy paper book with a lot of pictures in it, you might still want to buy it. Just don't expect any help with anything other than how to contact a contractor.

5 out of 5 stars excellent veggie garden book.......2003-07-23

This is an excellent book on vegetable gardening. I like it enough to be buying a second copy for my daughter. No one book covers everything but this is one I consult fairly regularly, especially when laying out a new bed or design. I also recommend Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew and Postage Stamp Gardening, can't remember author.
