Title should be "Mediterranean Lack of Inspiration".
This book will appeal to those with too much money, too few brains and absolutly no taste
Although America, rightly so, lays claim to some of the finest examples of Mediterranean Revival in the world, this book does nothing to bring the reader into the understated elegance created by those homes. Instead it continues the trite and tasteless habit of ostentatious behavior we Yanks have become known for the world over. The designs are thinly vieled examples of the MacMansions found on converted corn fields, complete with corn fed owners, throughout America. Bigger is better and gaudy is better still.
The book should not be used for reference material or even a coffee table book unless you need something on which you may rest your Bud while watching Monster Truck episodes.
Using this book for reference will not supply any insight into the Mediterreanean style, but it will demonstrate just how good we are at commandeering a style that has been perfected over hundreds of years and "fixing" or "improving" it.
If you are interested in the Mediterranean style in America, try "Red Tile Style" by Aroll Gellner or "Santa Barbara Style" by Kathryn Masson.
There are also many books covering he work of Addison Mizner and George Washington Smith in Florida and giants such as Julia Morgan in the West.
This book MIGHT be good to line the cat's litter box, but be forwarned, the cat may object.

2 out of 5 stars Affectation In-A-Box.......2006-09-26

.
gauche: Lacking social polish; tactless

gauche --Synonyms inept, clumsy, maladroit; coarse, gross, uncouth

This offers the reader All of the above and more.

Several issues are immediately apparent. First, is the lack of congruity it seems, of a philosophy (or budget) that would purchase plans from a mass-marketed stylebook on the cheap, only to have designs embellished with an excess of budget-busting ornamentation, inordinate angles, appliqué, unnecessary fictitious details, fatuous decoration and curves upon curves.

Anyone expecting to save money on this type of approach to building is setting himself or herself up for a HUGE awakening. One is well advised to consult a designer, building designer, or architect prior to purchasing such plans and proceeding with wise professional counsels.

Essentially what the reader is purchasing is a catalog of 125 cookie-cutter, in your face track home plans, from which they can select the one design on which to spend another thousand dollars (give or take depending on the plan) to secure the foundation plans, detailed floor plans, cross sections, structural plans, exterior elevations, and electricals.

These ersatz, eclectic "Mediterranean Inspiration" designs "steal and borrow" (the word begins with a "B" and will not pass the filter although a legitimate clean word) from Neoclassical, Story Book Style, Norman, Gothic, Tudor, doghouse. They brim with ostentatious details that betray the very fundamental standards of taste and refinement that the purchaser hopes to transmit.

The designs are a miscellany of plans intended to impress; yet lack the grace, elegance, and fundamental standards of good taste.

The reader should recognize that they will need to float their furniture on all those curves that are so beguiling on paper. The reader needs to identify 12-foot living room space as too small, or a 10-foot circular breakfast room that looks better on paper than the Gestalt of its reality. Consider all those eyebrow, and Palladian curved windows that look great on the exterior elevations will also require window treatments. Curved arches, arch-over-standard, circles, octagons, hexagons, trapezoids, angled top or bottom, and cutout shades are all going to require custom solutions that are not only far more costly than standard windows, but they also frequently detract from the interior surroundings they are supposed to enhance.

This book might be useful to free up creative blocks for those persons collecting ideas for their building projects. Nonetheless spare yourself the troubles of buying the actual plans without professional counsels.

Book Description

The Spanish-style architecture of Southern California's seaside estates, canyon villas, and courtyard bungalows is central to its romantic image, one that has traditionally evoked a Mediterranean paradise. The details of this inexhaustively rich style-- ornate wrought iron and wood balconies, colorful tiles, graceful arches, and palm-dotted gardens-- reflect the region's Spanish, Mexican, and southwestern history and culture as well as its popular outdoor lifestyle.

This book showcases Southern California's most historically significant and beautifully preserved Spanish-revival houses of this century. Twenty-one private homes built between 1922 and 1991 are featured in stunning color photography that captures exterior and interior architectural details, Spanish and Mexican antique furnishings and folk art, and lush landscaping and tiled fountains. Among these are the Adamson House in Malibu, with its extraordinary collection of custom tile from Malibu Potteries; the contemporary Greenberg House in Brentwood, by Ricardo Legorreta; The Andalusia Courtyard Apartments in Hollywood; and Casa Pacifica, the former home of Richard Nixon, overlooking the ocean in San Clemente. Brief narratives highlight the history of each building and its design influences on the Spanish-revival movement in California.

The Spanish revival grew in popularity around the turn of the century when many young American architects traveled to Spain, Italy, and Mexico, bringing back sketches and, as the foreword notes, romantic memories of "graceful foliage...small Indian towns...tiled dome and rococo towers." Hundreds of Spanish-style houses, apartments, and bungalows were built throughout Southern California in the following decades, many of them commissioned for movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino.

The Spanish revival is marked by two main phases: the mission revival, which incorporates the white stucco, cloistered patios, tile roofs, and exposed-beam ceilings typical of eighteenth-century California missions; and the more elaborate Mediterranean revival, influenced by Spanish and Italian Renaissance sources, eighteenth-century Spanish plateresque and churrigueresque forms, and Moorish-Andalusian styles.

Ideal for learning about the architecture and decortating styles of Spanish style homes. The photgraphs are beautiful. I will rely on this book when I design my new home.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2006-08-12

Great book! The minute I opened it I knew it was going to be a thrilling trip to another time in California history. Beautiful pictures of grand homes, grounds, and other structures built with Spanish and Mexican influence. If you want just one book covering this subject, this would be the one to buy. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Images of California Style.......2006-06-09

CSAS CALIFORNIA is one of the coffee table books bound to please not only those who live in California and are eager to study examples of California architecture termed Spanish Revival, but also a fine gift for those out of state friends who wonder if California has any history before 1950!

After an informative foreword by art historian David Gebhard and a tasty introduction by former Architectural Digest editor Elizabeth Jean McMillian the pages of this beautifully designed and elegantly captioned book survey some twenty-one homes built between 1922 and 1991 from Santa Barbara to San Clemente. Not only are the homes photographed formally by photographer Melba Levick, but they also show details of tiles, arches, columns, floors, fixtures and other aspects of design. Each home is then shown with images from the gardens surrounding it as well as the vistas from every vantage. And of special note are comments from the architects (the homes all date from between 1922 and 1991) as well as anecdotes about the current and previous owners.

This book, though published in 1996, remains the most complete examination of the combined Hispanic mission and Mediterranean revival styles now termed Spanish Revival. This is a fine book for those with the California Dream, and for those living it! Grady Harp, June 06

1 out of 5 stars Not that special.......2006-04-18

I didn't glean anything more from this book that I couldn't have gathered on a Sunday drive. Most of the pictures are of exteriors and amazingly enough, none of them really inspires appretiation of this architechtural style. I'm an absolute sucker for Spanish Colonial. There's almost nothing built during the classic era of the 1920's and '30's that I don't swoon over. This book, however, compiled some of the least attractive examples of that style and ends up being thoroughly disappointing. Definitely look elsewhere if your objective is designing interior details that honor the classics.

I have just purchased a lot at a new beach development called Watercolor right next to Seaside, Fl and am in the process of learning about the styles of decorating that I like. I saw a copy of this book at the sales center today and thought, wow, this will be a great guide for me. Some decorating books seem kind of over-the-top, but this one is beautiful and some of the looks seem attainable after studying them. I plan to have my own copy soon!

Book Description

Though times have changed, the charm and grace of Southern style endures. It’s a design tradition that values gentility and gracious living above conspicuous consumption; history and mystery above the cutting edge; and hospitality above all else. Today’s Southern homes reflect a sense of style that remains in touch with the past as it embraces the present.
In this affectionate portrait of Southern homes, Frances Schultz and Paula S. Wallace lead a tour of more than twenty of the South’s proudest houses and most remarkable modern domiciles, proving that the legendary graciousness of the Southern home lives on in all forms–from seaside cottages to some truly over-the-top domains. Despite the differences among these diverse homes, the most timeless aspects of Southern style abound, including:
• Using wrought iron for decorative elements
both inside and outside the home
•Incorporating the porch as an essential room
of the house
• Collecting antique silver to complement the
contemporary table

Magnificent full-color photographs of each house show everything from the grand and elegant to the quaint and quirky, making this unique book a visual treat for anyone enchanted by the eternal grace of the American South.

Book Description

New Orleans designer Angèle Parlange shows readers how to transform their homes and lives in true "Creole style"–creating modern beauty out of personal heritage without breaking the bank.

Southern tradition blends with modern whimsy in this first offering from famed New Orleans designer Angèle Parlange–and the result is this extraordinary home decor book. Known for her fresh designs and unexpected blends of the opulent and the offbeat, Parlange brings her particular brand of "Creole thift"–the art of making beautiful, quality decorations out of heritage pieces without spending a mint–straight to the budget–concious reader.

From a fabric pattern inspired by vintage 1830s calling cards to shower curtains originating in a seventy–year–old college football program, Parlange's designs are eclectic, riveting, and utterly gorgeous. An integral part of her design philosophy is that everyone has personal mementos that can be transformed into beautiful "cocktail dresses for the home," whether it's a string of Grandma's antique glass beads or the faded material from an awful (but sentimentally valuable!) high school prom dress. With "trash and treasures" from her own home, Parlange demonstrates how each object can be used to create something that is both uniquely personal and richly lavish.

Filled with wry anecdotes, recipes, illustrations, before–and–after photos, and step–by–step instructions, Parlangerie will inspire readers to unleash their imaginations, unpack those dusty attic boxes, and transform old keepsakes into signature items that add spice and life to the home.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The debutante thing got really old.......2007-08-17

I know of Angele Parlange and certainly know the home she grew up in very well. I was hoping to find something different in this book, something inspiring or something creative. I didn't really. Perhaps slightly. I gold leaf and enjoy that. I sew my own drapes. I'm loving the shower curtain and want to do that with pictures of my 3 sons, but I still was left like someone had torn out gobs of pages out of the book.

I left Louisiana a long time ago because I wanted to be my own individual and not tag on to the skirts and suits of my family whose blood is pretty close to blue and rich in history. The book made me thankful that I had gone because that part of the book that she goes on and on ad nauseum is what I detested. So, for me, the book was a let down.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely Read.......2007-06-13

Seems that some people are disappointed that this is not a "decorating" book or a "Creole" book or a book about "thrifting," which is actually affordable. But who cares? This is a lovely memoir about growing up in the south. The author can certainly weave a story and the images she conjures up are memorable. I enjoyed the way she uses photos of the old family home and objects to complement the stories. Yes, there are decorating ideas that aren't very plausible to the average person, but I overlooked that and thoroughly enjoyed this book for what it is: an entertaining, creative read.

5 out of 5 stars This book is even BETTER than I expected...........2007-03-15

I am only reading this book in increments of 5 pages because I want to savor this delicacy for as long as possible! Angele "offers up" the greatest tidbits-(Creole sayings, stories about relatives, N.O. recipes, gossip in the French Quarter)--- which I absolutely "get" because I have spent much time in New Orleans (not to mention reading Capote and Hellman for the "real-deal" atmospheric stuff)and Angele is the true Southern daughter of New Orleans! What great ideas! The acrobat coverlet! The cameo coffee-table!! And her description of the Hamptons reminds me of another one-of-a-kind lady: Little Edith Beale--Did you visit the Hamptons to relish that wonderful lady's life?( Maidstone club?)
PLEASE Angele, run for Mayor or Governor! And use this as your slogan:
"Ain't time a wrecker"

4 out of 5 stars Fun, happy read for a Louisiana girl .......2007-03-06

I loved this book. I live about 40 mins away from Parlange and enjoyed reading about the Parlange family. It is a beautiful book that can be left out as a coffee table book. As far as decorating ideas, not nearly as many as I hoped , but the mirror is a great idea and I actually loved the shower curtain . Not my idea of thrifty though.

3 out of 5 stars Creole Thrift: Premium Southern Living Without Spending a Mint.......2007-01-18

This book was not what I expected. It is a book based on a woman's experience finding old southern items from the late 1800s and early 1900s and decorating her house with it. It is interesting...not something that I can use for decorating ideas though.

Book Description

The romantic elements that define the traditional southern cottage-a picturesque picket fence, a breezy sleeping porch, and well-worn heirloom furnishings-have made these small homes perennially stylish. The Southern Cottage showcases the best cozy dwellings in popular seasonal destinations-from the mountains in Virginia and North Carolina to Florida's Panhandle shores and the coast and islands of South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Louisiana. A pristine Victorian lake house and a rustic mountaintop retreat express two moods of escape in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Summer beachside cottages include a colorful Key West home and a century-old family Florida retreat that captures informal old-fashioned spirit. Examples of 19th- and early 20th-century cottages reveal ways in which these diminutive houses satisfy the need for privacy as well as communal living. With tantalizing photographs of shaded porches, stone paths lined with flowers, and wicker-filled rooms, this is an inspiration for those who want their getaway home to evoke the timeless charm of southern living.

Ever since I purchased a turn of the century farmhouse I have been a bit obsessed w/ reading about the history and culture of the south. I enjoyed this book and the photos but most of all I love reading about the people who choose to live a simple life:)There is something magical about this way of life. I feel so lucky to experience living in a historic home and I enjoyed reading the reviewer's home featured in the book! OMG!!!! It is an honor! CONGRATS!!!! I googled and made trips to the local museum in my area and found my farmhouse written about in a history book and it is thrilling beyond words! Hope someday the author chooses to write "The Southern Farmhouse" Hint!:)

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2007-05-08

Susan Sully's "The Southern Cottage" is a beautifully written book, illustrated with stunning photographs of eighteen charming cottages. In the spirit of full disclosure, my home is featured in the book (four pages of text and eight photos). I had never met Susan before she visited me last year. An officer of our local Preservation Society recommended my home, a mid-nineteenth century "story-and-a-jump" cottage rehabilitated to historic preservation standards, to her.

Susan's photos show my house as it is. All of the furniture and other items in her pictures are mine, ones that I use daily. Sometimes I sit in my parlor with Susan's book open on my lap, and think, "what a wonderful testimony to the love and care we've shown to this historic old house."

In addition to capturing the spirit of my house in photographs, Susan has written several pages describing the house (it belonged to my grandparents), our family history (including colonial settlers, sea captains, and shipwrecks), and life today on a barrier island.

So far I have read only a few other sections (each cottage has its own chapter), but if the book captures the spirit of every house as faithfully as mine (and I have every reason to believe it does) this is a book worthy of any bookshelf.

The American South has long been renowned for its hospitality and gracious living, and these qualities are reflected in the region's distinct interior design. Southern Style captures this easygoing yet stylish feel of Southern homes designed to provide comfort the family as well as entertain guests.

Author Mark Mayfield and the editors of Southern Accents magazine have a firm grasp of the essence of Southern style and provide guidance on working the style into your own home; gorgeous full-color photographs provide the visual inspiration. The authors point out that one of the most obvious influences on the South's interiors has been the area's weather and environment. A sleeping-porch bedroom with mosquito netting over the bed, a large verandah stretching the length of the house, a living room filled with floral prints echoing the lush gardens outside are all hallmarks of Southern style. Historical changes have also helped defined the South's present decorating style. While some Southern traditions and trends have fallen by the wayside--for example, the trend of having a formal living room--others, such as formal dining rooms, have abided for decades because of their practical nature or cultural importance.

After a look at the interiors of Southern homes, including living, dining, and bedrooms, the book moves outside to take a look at Southern architecture and gardens. There's also a chapter regarding the South's efforts to preserve old architecture and interiors, as well as a listing of historic Southern homes and museums. A resource guide at the end of the book lists Southern interiors shops by state. The authors of Southern Style have done an impressive job of defining the elegant, warm design style of the South, one that all homeowners, not just Southerners, may want to integrate into their homes. --Kris Law

5 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-12-01

I have been an avid reader of Southern Accents for years. I found their book to be well written and filled with the beautiful photography I've come to expect from the magazine. Chapters are broken out room-by-room, making it an easy reference guide. The book is one that you'll not only keep out on the coffee table, but also will refer to often for great decorating ideas.

5 out of 5 stars southern style.......1999-11-29

I found Southern Style a great compedium of how design in the South has evolved. As an editor at a competing magazine, I wish more publications would give us a backward glance at their previously featured work. This book shows not only where southern design has been, but the way past photography and styling techniques have changed. I wish more magazines would publish such a compendium. It would save us all a lot of space with hoarding decorating magazines. Oh admit it,we all do it. Also great text, with deep insight into it's subject matter.

1 out of 5 stars Big disappointment.......1999-11-24

I eagerly awaited Southern Style's release ll/l only to find that the content was repeated from past issues of Southern Accents. I was looking forward to new pictures/content but found very little that wasn't in old magazines. I think the editors could have at least given us different camera shots of those same rooms. Big disappointment.

Book Description

The South has a palpable charm and a lively sense of identity. Though defined by a specific geography, elements of Southern style permeate and influence design all over the country and all over the world.

Southern Rooms, Volume 2: Magnolia Style—Southern Rooms Redefined is an inspirational collection of the current trends in Southern interior decoration created by well-known interior designers and is written by top-notch design journalist Shannon Howard.

The book highlights designers' vision, challenges, inspirations, and their individual style, and offers practical tips and ideas that readers might use in their own homes. Howard looks at what gives the South its unique appeal and what defines Southern style, and she provides answers as to why the South is a hotbed for new ideas and great design. She looks at the South's take on traditional, casual, eclectic, and rustic décor and provides a guide for shopping “magnolia style.”

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly captures the character of the South.......2005-06-27

I'm a big fan of Southern Accents magazine, so I was thrilled to get this book as a gift. Many of my favorite Southern designers (Phillip Sides, Suzanne Kasler, etc) are featured in it, with GORGEOUS photos of their projects and sometimes their homes. I usually don't read the text in decorating magazines, but this book is incredibly well-written. I loved the story of the woman who hired the mountain man to build her log cabin, and how he lived in a tent on her property for six months! The author did a great job of capturing the character of each designer, and really letting their Southern quirks shine through. If you're looking for inspiration and excellent design tips (along with a little Southern history), buy this book today!

5 out of 5 stars What a Gem........2000-06-16

I bought this book 3 years ago and totally love it.The plant info and the photographs are beautiful. A lot of the info comes from Natives and give the readers information on what the plants can be used for like remedies for toothaches etc. The photographs, over 1000 of them, are all done in colour and are absolutely beautiful. I would have paid 3 times the amount for this book. A must for the outdoorsman.

3 out of 5 stars Accessorizing in a more formal Southern style..........2007-08-02

This book was written in the mid-1990's and some of the ideas may seem a bit outdated by now. However, if you still love the (traditional) CLASSIC SOUTHERN decorating style, (a style that was so popular in the 1980s to mid 1990's), then this book may be of interest to you.

For the price, which is quite low, this could be a book that would not be too expensive to read and review yourself.... Afterall, everyone does have their own decorating preferences. Example: some of the neo-classical decorating ideas can be used today, although in a more traditional home setting, and not in a current modern home setting.

Also, the photos are very nicely done, (although with yellow overtones).

NOTE: If you are interested in a more updated book on ways to accessorize your semi-formal (traditional) country home, then I would recommed another book called "Christi Carter's Art of Accessorizing" , by Christi Carter. I think that Christi's ideas hold up much better than the SOUTHERN ACCENTS book. Infact, I still refer to Christi's book quite often, but I'm not sure if I can say that about this SOUTHERN ACCENTS book reviewed here.
