    Book Description

Somehow, no matter how hard some people try to change their messy habits, they just can't seem to keep their homes in any kind of order. Magazines and books and television shows offer all kinds of advice and tactics for keeping a house organized and neat and livable. But what some people need is not more advice but a change in their mindsets. Organizing for Life helps readers understand why they seem to be inherently messy people, exposing the lies they tell themselves and introducing the truth about how they really can have a clean, inviting home. Felton helps readers focus on overcoming the roadblocks that keep them in a permanently messy state in order to change their habits for good.

    3 out of 5 stars A decent book.......2005-02-24

I liked West Coast rooms better. The rooms were more contemporary overall. East Coast rooms did have much more of a variety of styles. A little of something for everyone. They were well styled, nice photos. I wouldn't purchase this if I were looking for an instructional design book though.

4 out of 5 stars No stodgy traditionalists here..........2000-05-29

I really enjoyed this book. Most east coast design that is not country in orgin is very traditional. This book features a very nice array of styles to choose from. More modern and hip designs are found with a smattering of the east coast thrown in...

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars End of the House of Winslow.......2007-02-08

After reading "The White Knight" I decided it must be time for the House of Winslow to come to an end. I have read all 40 books and did enjoy the series and historical accounts. I suppose I enjoyed the earlier books much more than the later ones. I really got into the characters of Sky Winslow and his family and that era. Probably the highlight of this book were the reunions of the Winslows. I had difficulty warming up to Luke or Noelle either one. I finally skimmed through the pages of Luke's drunken days. I felt that went on too long. So much of the story line and phrases we have read in other Gilbert Morris books. However, when you are on the 40th in a series, I'm sure it must be difficult to come up with new ideas. It had a good story line but so familiar as if I had read it in other Morris Books. However, I would read any Gilbert Morris books as they are always a favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars End of an era.......2007-02-06

The House of Winslow series finally comes to an end with the story of Luke Winslow in "The White Knight". He's a pilot fighting in the Spanish Civil War when his girlfriend's family is killed by German bombers. Feeling depressed he returns home to his family only to become a drunk who mopes around all the time. When one of his war buddies offers him a job, Luke attempts to sober up for it but finds he can't. This mistake costs the life of his friend, which Luke feels responsible for. Ironically Luke finds himself later employed by his friend's sister, who he has kept his identity a secret from. The two fall in love but under false pretenses. When Joelle finds out Luke is in danger of losing her forever. Then Pearl Harbor happens and when Luke feels the call to go into war, he must decide how to prove that he has to be true to himself.

I felt this book was an improvement over the last few that have come out in the series. Luke and Joelle aren't cardboard characters and neither are they complete repeats of Morris' former characters. As always with Morris's books is the rich detail of the culture and history of the time period. I did like how there was a family reunion because the last few books have isolated the main Winslow character with no contact from other family members. It was nice to see some of the older clan from Sky Winslow's descendants back in the story again. I guess however it was wishful thinking to include every Winslow in the reunion, the family tree is way too big and confusing. Also maybe it's just me the two people on the cover, representing Luke and Joelle, look just like Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four, Amazing Grace) and Kate Beckinsale in Pearl Harbor. So that's who I kept picturing the entire time I was reading the book. While there is some plot that seems to be repeated (hiding true identity, being the only non Christian in the family), this book seemed on par with the earlier novels in the series.

I'm really sad to see the series ending, I mean WWII isn't even halfway over. I always wonder why Christian historical fiction never goes past WWII. There might be one or two books about the fifties, but other than flashbacks we hardly ever read about the 60s, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, anything in the 80s. Do they consider it too recent to be history? Do we have to wait another 50 years before they'll start writing historical fiction about that age? I wish though they could have at least updated the tree to include the last few books. Alana still isn't married and I still feel sorry for poor Dan Greene and Anne Winslow's family from back in the 1800s, they got mentioned in book 7 and then disappeared right after that! I also never understood why they created a new entire family line with Maylon Winslow, and the whole bit with Lance Winslow all of a sudden becoming a southerner was ridiculous. Little discrepancies aside, I really enjoyed reading HOW, this was one of the first Christian fiction series I read after becoming a Christian so I've grown up with it. I've learned a lot from reading these books, in fact it's one of the reasons I got interested in history. While plots tended to repeat themselves and some characters were intolerable, the series does show a good representation that the changes in America do not affect a family of strong Christian faith.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Original Work.......2007-07-29

Please understand that the author of this book, Gustav Stickley, is founder of the original Arts and Crafts movement which evolved to American Crafstman in the United States in the early part of the 20th century. This book is in fact the original work from that time period, so is dated in its composition, but, of course, an historically significant piece of literature.

2 out of 5 stars An OK Read.......2007-04-10

This book has very poor sructural building plans. It informs of the classic arts and craftsman period and how it effected design. It did not inspire nor reveal any proceedure's on how certain designs were accomplished.

I was dissappointed in the poor illustrations and lack of depth on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful houses, great interior ideas.......2001-03-28

This is a reprint of a house plan catalog from 1909. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the accuracy of reproduction- in some cases, if pages in the originals that Dover found are damaged or torn, that page is reproduced in the original with the tear, smudge, blot, or hole showing. So to judge the books, one has to compare each one to others of its kind, and then to decide whether the material in it is thorough and complete according to the standards of its time. Since there are several dozen of these catalogs published by Dover, we have the basis for such a comparison.

Stickley and the Craftsman school of design are well known. Many people own bungalows, or admire them even if they don't own them. What getting a book such as this does, is give a person insight into the details of the lifestyle of the time, of the philosophy of the architects/designers, and so on.

This particular book is one of my favorites. As with other Stickley catalogs, it includes several essays. The first one is "The Simplification of Life: A Chapter from Edward Carpenter's book called 'England's Ideal'". This essay resonates today, with people who are looking to get away from some of the modern excesses of possessions and displays of wealth, to a simpler life. There is also a review of another book, with quotes from it: "The Art of Building a Home" by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin.

One of the features of this catalog is that along with the exterior view and floor plan of every house, there is an extensive written description. For many of the houses there are drawings of the interior, with suggestions for furnishings. There are also examples of what types of light fixtures one might use. The written descriptions, in some cases, even include alternate ways to finish the house to save money or to adapt it to a particular type of location. Most of the illustrations are drawings/paintings; there are a few photographs, but not many. The drawings of the interiors include wallpapers and curtains. One illustration even shows a Craftsman piano! There are some concrete/cement houses, including ones mixing concrete with wood construction.

There are a few houses in the book without indoor bathrooms, which is not unusual for the period, but most have a full bath, and some have two bathrooms. Almost all have extensive built-ins: sideboards, bookcases, benches and settles, shelves. There are illustrations of the kitchens; while built-in kitchen cabinets as we know them now were not common at the time, these illustrations show kitchens furnished with the cabinets and tables that were common, and show the placement of stoves, water heaters, etc. There are also some wonderful examples of inlaid decorative wood flooring, and large sections on Craftsman furniture, metal work, and fabrics and needlework.

One of my favorite things in the whole book is "Two Inexpensive but Charming Cottages for Women Who Want Their Own Homes." It's difficult for us to imagine now, how radical an idea that was - that women might want to own their own homes without necessarily getting married. Recognizing that even if she works, a woman's income at that time would be significantly less than a man's, Stickley designs these homes to be economically built. He describes how two or three single women might manage to share such a home, making it more affordable. Very forward-thinking for the time!

In sum: this is more than just a plan book; the only bad point is that if this is your first exposure to plan books, then the subsequent ones you read will seem plain and lacking by comparison. Definitely should be in the collection of anyone interested in turn-of-the-century architecture or restoring houses.

4 out of 5 stars Another good reference..........2000-04-11

This book assisted us in the redesign of our home in the craftsman tradition. A good reference for us to formulate our ideas, and for our architects to see what we liked. Worth the price

This is exactly the same book as "Creative Lighting for Outdoor Living"; only the title has been changed. There is something vaguely suspicious about re-titling the same text and illustrations to lure the unwary into a second purchase. That said, my earlier review stands but my opinion of Lark Books has taken a fall.

Not just great photos and ideas. This book give details on all the pools, including geographical location, size, depth, color of plaster, type of coping and decking/terrace, etc. Although there are a lot of great books out with wonderful pictures, this one doesn't have all tropical pools, which is nice for those of us who don't have a jungle of palms! Very nice designs for those who live in temperate climates or with more traditional yards/homes. Best pool book yet.

Indoor plants bring living warmth to any interior décor. Arrange them in beautiful containers, root them creatively in varied textural beds, and enjoy the stunning results. Author Rosemary McCreary has designed 40 dazzling tabletop gardens to inspire the indoor green thumb year-round — gardens that enhance the home with more drama than potted houseplants and greater durability than cut flowers.

McCreary’s innovative designs include stylish gardens under glass; floating plants whose roots, visible in clear water, are part of the allure; and miniature landscapes that grow in every type of beautiful tray, container, and basket imaginable. Among the projects are a collection of succulents springing out of a colorful gravel bed; a basket of savory Mediterranean herbs to perk up winter meals; cascading ivy, trained to frame a north-facing window; and a charming miniature tea rose in a jar.

To ensure success, each project includes step-by-step design and planting instructions, a complete checklist of required materials, ongoing care advice, and full-color photography of materials and the completed garden. Exotic orchids, soft grasses, easy-to-grow herbs, and colorful bulbs are among the dozens of popular plants McCreary encourages gardeners to work with in her designs.

For every dedicated gardener who has spent dull winter months longing for the scent of dirt, tabletop gardens are the answer. Their elegance and vitality connect the housebound grower to summer’s cycles of growth.

      4 out of 5 stars nicel;y written nicely drawn.......2007-06-11

A good refurence on period homes. Each structure has a profile drawing, plans for two floors and is well described. Unfortunately it provides no images for attick which Victorians often used for bedrooms or funrooms as well as storage or basement which often contained house coal furnace and storage as well as other facilities.

A good find for anyone interested in homes of this most interesting period. I just wish it were complete.

4 out of 5 stars Unique Floor Plans.......2005-09-17

I actually purchased this book for use in a computer game. The Sims and Sims 2 games permit the building of houses and for me, this book filled the bill perfectly.

To actually work from authentic floor plans used in the 19th Century and watch it come to life is an interesting hobby.

Each home consists of a very good drawing of the house itself plus an excellent rendering of the floor plan. In those days, you browsed thru this book much the same as a Sears Catalog and picked out the home you wanted built. You then bought the floor plans which varied in price. Some floor plans cost as little as $25.00, others cost $150.00.

There is a very good description of the house which consists of general dimensions, exterior materials, interior materials and accommodations such as heating by furnace or fireplace. In many cases, the house could be built for $3,000 or less.

For the history buff it would be interesting time spent with this book. I recommend it for the detail in the floor plans alone. The drawings are superb.

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book.......2007-07-17

This is a beautiful book of primarily European homes--some houses, lofts and apartments. I found it difficult to "run down" some of the most desirable products as they are not normally available in the US. The design work is of a very high caliber-so lift all the ideas you can use.
