Book Description

Demonic forces often invade our homes openly and brazenly. Other times, they may have resided with us for years-we just didn't notice them. But their means of arrival matters less than the threat they pose to our homes and those we love. Possessions, attitudes and behaviors can all forge a stronghold for Satan to take over your home! For example, a dust-covered novel based on a horrifying account could be the seed of spiritual death for an innocent reader. In six short chapters, this book provides the examples, explanations, causes and cures you need to purify your home and keep your own spiritual life intact and growing. If you really want to be delivered from evil, put Spiritual House Cleaning to work!

1 out of 5 stars Why can't there be a 'less than 1 star' rating??.......2007-09-05

I'm certainly not going to imply that objects don't hold some sort of 'finger print' (for lack of a better word) but unfortunately, it seems to me, these folks are a little 'out there'.....

Evil is real, very real - but *I* don't think this book is an end all to combatting it. I'd prefer prayer & a Bible anyday.

The contents of both the book & (*I* feel) the authors are about as equally as dark as the cover.

Very disappointing read.....consider any other similar book, but my advice is don't spend your money here....YMMV....

2 out of 5 stars Not a Good Source of Accurate Information.......2007-07-26

I have a copy of this book and have read and re-read it. It has taken something that is true and stretched it out of proportion.

While it is true that there are objects that bring demonic oppression and invite demonic activity, it is usually easy for a Christian to cast unwanted demons out by pleading the blood of Jesus and taking authority over them.

This book makes it very difficult to get away from the demonic since it lists all types of things that it assumes are cursed like Harry Potter. I highly doubt Harry Potter is a tool of the devil; he's got plenty of much better tools to work with like ouija boards and movies along the lines of Hell Raiser.

While I will agree with some of what the book says, most is not even close to being true.

1 out of 5 stars they don't understand discarnates.......2006-05-19

A much better reference would be Dr William Baldwin's book. His techniques of spirit releasement can clean a house much better.

1 out of 5 stars Clueless people shouldn't comment........2005-09-08

Christians clueless as to the meaning of yoga or the background and philosophy of what they call "hinduism" should refrain from posting their silly comments here. If you have never bothered to study the ancient Indian scriptures that deal with the Lord or the process of yoga and what it is meant for, you have no place presenting your misunderstandings and speculations as truth. We don't do that with your Bible and Christian faith either, do we?

If you don't understand how or why the conclusion of ancient Indian philosophy is *monotheistic* and accepts only one supreme God, don't comment. If you don't understand that "yoga" means the same as the Latin "religare" (from which "religion" is derived), namely to *connect* with the Lord, and that the highest form of yoga is bhakti, or love for God, don't comment. If you don't understand that asanas aren't meant to worship "gods" and how they are part of an eightfold mechanical system to learn to control the mind and senses that is no longer recommended for this day and age, don't comment.

The goal of yoga is to re-awaken the dormant love for God that is integral to every soul, to "love the Lord with all thy heart and soul."

5 out of 5 stars be careful what you buy or recieve.......2005-08-04

This book is a must to read. It may answer those questions you have regarding "things that may have spirits attached to them." It will answer some questions as to why certain things may be happening to people. A must read if you're really interested in "cleaning your home from unwanted guest".

Book Description

In this intimate and poignant history of a sprawling century-old summer house on Cape Cod, George Howe Colt reveals not just one family's fascinating story but a vanishing way of life. Faced with the sale of the treasured house where he had spent forty-two summers, Colt returned for one last August with his wife and young children. The Big House, the author's loving tribute to his one-of-a-kind family home, interweaves glimpses of that elegiac final visit with memories of earlier summers spent at the house and of the equally idiosyncratic people who lived there over the course of five generations.

Built by Colt's great-grandfather one hundred years ago on a deserted Cape Cod peninsula, the house is a local landmark (neighboring children know it as the Ghost House): a four-story, eleven-bedroom jumble of gables, bays, sloped roofs, and dormers. The emotional home of the Colt family, the Big House has watched over five weddings, four divorces, and three deaths, along with countless anniversaries, birthday parties, nervous breakdowns, and love affairs. Beaten by wind and rain, insulated by seaweed, it is both romantic and run-down, a symbol of the faded glory of the Boston Brahmin aristocracy.

With a mixture of amusement and affection, Colt traces the rise and fall of this tragicomic social class while memorably capturing the essence of summer's ephemeral pleasures: sailing, tennis, fishing, rainy-day reading. Time seems to stand still in a summer house, and for the Colts the Big House always seemed an unchanging place in a changing world. But summer draws to a close, and the family must eventually say good-bye.

Elegant and evocative, The Big House is both magical and sad, a gift to anyone who holds cherished memories of summer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Big House.......2007-10-02

"The Big House" is best when author Colt is talking about the history and appearance of the Cape, or evoking a picture of the summer days he spent there, but as the memoirist of his family, he seems only in the elementary stages of his struggle to find his true relationship to Boston Brahmanism. Certainly part of maturity is trying to figure out what of the heritage we've been landed with we accept and what we reject; this is neither an easy nor a straightforward task. But Mr. Colt's discomfort about his Wasp-iness is such that the reader is uncomfortable too--we don't quite know where Mr. Colt is coming from.

There are, however, many nice moments in this book. I owe to Mr. Colt the happy surprise of meeting, in his apparently vigorous old age, Penrose Hallowell, a Civil War hero of mine, riding out on a summer morning to pick up his mail from the post office in Pocasset. And if you summer (or used to summer), on the Cape, especially if you've spent time on Buzzard's Bay, you will find much to enjoy.

(If this book interests you, you may enjoy "In My Blood," by John Sedgwick, about a rather similar family in another big house, with some of the same challenges.)

4 out of 5 stars NICE STORY.......2007-08-16

I liked this book. I read it while I was on the beach in Misquamicut. Its about a man who brings his family to Cape Cod to spend the last summer in a summer home owned by his family that has to be sold because they could no longer afford to keep it. It told of his parents, the story behind the house, his grandparents, and his memories of the house when he was young. I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars A Sense of Place.......2007-07-16

Partway through this memoir, one of George Howe Colt's friends uses "a sense of place" to describe what seems most important about Colt's family summer house. I could not agree more. The Big House is a huge, rambling monstrosity of a place, seeming more like the Addams Family's house than anything else. But the Colts and the Atkinsons have lived in and loved the Big House for a century, and its easy to see why. It provides an anchor and a gathering point for the generations to come together every summer. But its too expensive to maintain, and the family has to decide what to do with it, causing some members to fear that it may be lost forever.

This is a memoir both of a house and of a family. The Atkinsons and Colts were Boston Brahmins, WASPS who were once wealthy and prosperous but who now have fallen on leaner times. They endured much unhappiness over the years, but found the Big House to be a place of healing for them. I recognized many traits they shared with my own extended family, which is to be expected since we are WASPS, too, though we are Southerners rather than New Englanders and much less prosperous. I understood the need for "a sense of place" too, since I feel it strongly when visiting areas where my own ancestors lived.

I picked this book up on a whim, but once I started it I could not put it down. It is a fine memoir of a place and way of life that has almost disappeared, but it is also an evocation of much that is still important: family, heritage, and memory.

4 out of 5 stars LOVELY.......2006-11-29

THIS IS A LOVELY BOOK THAT MAKES ME REMEMBER MY OWN FAMILY BIG HOUSE. ALTHOUGH IT WAS IN THE NORTH WOODS OF WISCONSIN AND NOT ON CAPE COD, I REMEMBER THE SAME FAMILY DYNAMIC WITH KIDS EVERYWHERE AND AUNTS AND UNCLES READY TO DO SOMETHING FUN. THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-11-03

I couldn't put this book down! A perfect blend between well written history and personal family narrative. Also, it was pretty creepy how similar their family is to mine! Highly recommended for anyone who's ever had a summer house, been to a summer house, been to Cape Cod, or enjoyed summer in any capacity.

5 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start for New Moms.......2007-07-11

As a new mom, I was overwhelmed by all the "must haves" parents are bombarded with. This book helped me cut through all that and focus on the key elements of designing my hursery. It has great tips about how to avoid chaos (at least in the nursery design!) and streamline, without ever being preachy or intimidating. A Peaceful Nursery is a wonderful guide for anyone getting ready to welcome home a baby and has become one of my favorite shower gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Preparing a Nursery using Feng Shui.......2007-06-13

I bought this item for my granddaughter who is expecting her first child in about three months. She is way into Feng Shui. Her entire home follows the foundation of Feng Shui.
While I did not read the book myself, my granddaughter was very excited and pleased about receiving it. She had looked in the city where she lives and was unable to find such a book.
Based on her enthusiasm, I rate this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift!.......2006-04-07

I wish I had this book when I set up my childs nursery! It is so easy to read and understand. I have given this book as a gift to many of my pregnant friends and they are really enjoying it. It is a great introduction to Feng Shui as well as a great introduction to parenthood. Getting ready for your baby is often overwhelming and this book is a wonderful resource for how to set up the room, what you will need, and how to keep it clean and healthy. This book is truly a find!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect guidebook!.......2006-03-12

An excellent guidebook to creating the most important room in your house! Very comprehensive but easy to read and understand. I love the checklists which made shopping for the baby so much easier. This book was very helpful for our first baby....a must have for every new parent!

5 out of 5 stars Have a Calm, Welcoming Space for the Baby.......2006-03-08

"The nursery is the most important room in any expectant parents' home, and every parent wants to ensure that it will be as warm, inviting and healthy as possible for their new baby. Designing this special space is also an opportunity for expectant parents to prepare mentally and physically, for the changes to come. Through stylish photographs and practical, easy-to-understand design tips, home and lifestyle experts Laura Forbes Carlin and Alison Forbes show expectant parents how - by applying principles gleaned from interior design, Feng Shui, healthy living and their own parenting experience - they can:
*Create a balanced and peaceful nursery
*Make health conscious choices when selecting paint, fabric, toys and furniture
*Enjoy the practical and emotional benefits of a streamlined and clutter-free home
*Set up a nursery that encourages good sleep for their baby
*Prepare and organize nursing, changing, bathing, sleeping and play areas
*And many more helpful step-by-step guidelines for creating a nursery that will nurture their baby's mind, body and spirit - as well as their own - during their transition into parenthood." (from the author's website)
I think some people resist feng shui, thinking it too "new-age" or something. Actually so much of it seems based on common-sense, once you try it. I like that this book addresses clutter problems too, since many American homes have issues with that. V. Allain

A house that's designed to be beautiful and house an active, energetic family may seem like a tall order for an architect, but the 24 homes featured in The New Family Home meet both needs extraordinarily well. Author Jim Tolpin takes readers through all the nooks and crannies of these well-planned homes, where every inch of space is maximized to create a family living space that's attractive as well as functional.

Many of the 24 homes share several characteristics popular with today's families, such as a great room (rather than the separate living room, dining room, and kitchen configurations of the past), so that family members can feel connected even while pursuing separate activities. A home office sometimes needs to be incorporated into the home or property, as telecommuting has become both possible and popular. Separate media rooms that house the television, video games, and stereo are also frequently requested, as they allow families to preserve the living room as a distraction-free place to spend time with each other.

Adaptability is the key to making these homes work, and Tolpin explains how this element is incorporated into each house. For instance, what is currently a guest bedroom on the first floor of a home can be converted to a bedroom for a teen who wants more privacy, and then to an accessible master bedroom for the aging parents after the child moves out. This flexibility in a home makes sense considering the current trend of families who want to live in their homes longer rather than move when a house no longer fits their lifestyle. By making a house's space adaptable and multifunctional, it can fill many roles through the years, and a family can live happily in one home for many decades.

Each family in The New Family Home required a home designed to meet their specific needs and wishes, and the book documents how the family worked with the architect who translated their requests into reality. The end result is a home that fits each family's particular lifestyle now and for the foreseeable future. --Kris Law

    Book Description

These days, home is often the only place to relax, escape anxiety, and enjoy time with one's family. It's no wonder people are now spending more money and time on their home and its comforts. Recognizing this trend, author Jim Tolpin asked some of the country's top residential architects for examples of homes designed specifically with families in mind. Whether for traditional, single-parent, blended, or extended families, or for accommodating visiting kids and grandkids, all the homes in this book are tailored to the people who live in them.

I got it for my 77 year old mom who works at a Laundry. I thought she knew everything about stains but this book gave her more information and so much more. She loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Hints from Heloise : A 90's Guide for Household Cleaning.......2002-01-16

I enjoyed reading this book especially because it brought back memories of when Heloise had a column in the newspaper. I remember thinking how inventive she was in renewing/restoring items with local products found in the everyday home! I'm always looking for new ways to approach cleaning !!

    5 out of 5 stars A great gift for a new Bride.......2001-12-11

Remembering Heloise's books I received 33 years ago as a bridal shower gift, I turned to Heloise again when I needed a gift for my new Daughter-in-law-to-be AND for my daughter who was also getting married. Soon after the wedding my new daughter-in-law thanked me for the Heloise books and informed me they had already come in handy!

4 out of 5 stars Indispensable if you have kids or pets.......2000-05-09

This book is a must-have if you have kids or pets. A good friend has this book and I called her so often about stain removal I finally bought the book myself. The day after I received this book, it paid for itself after I got chocolate and then gum out of 2 of my son's outfits. It also includes many helpful hints on everyday household problems. The only thing I would change about the book is the organization - now and then it can be hard to find specific things. I always find the item, it just takes a few minutes. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

    Book Description

In this beautiful book, Elizabeth Cohen gives us a true and moving portrait of the love and courage of a family.

Elizabeth, a member of the “sandwich generation”—people caught in the middle, simultaneously caring for their children and for their aging parents—is the mother of Ava and the daughter of Daddy, and responsible for both. Hers is the story of a woman’s struggle to keep her family whole, to raise her child in a house of laughter and love, and to keep her father from hiding the house keys in his slippers.

In this story full of everyday triumphs, first steps, and elderly confusion, Ava, a baby, finds each new picture, each new word, each new song, something to learn greedily, joyfully. Daddy is a man in his twilight years for whom time moves slowly and lessons are not learned but quietly, frustratingly forgotten. Elizabeth, a suddenly single mother with a career and a mortgage and a hamper of laundry, finds her world spiraling out of control yet full of beauty. Faced with mounting disasters, she chooses to confront life head-on.

Written in wonderful prose and imbued with an unquenchable spirit, The House on Beartown Road takes us on a journey through the remarkable landscape that is family.

    4 out of 5 stars A very readable book.......2007-08-30

The author writes of her father's decent into Alzheimer's Disease (being more
and more child like in his progression of the disease and her young son growing up from a toddler to young boyhood..the opposite ends of the spectrum. A very moving book. I may reread this one.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of past happiness.......2005-07-02

In September 2004's Australian Reader's Digest, the story "The Unlikely Gift" had me in tears. It moved me so much that I searched out and ordered the book it was taken from - "The House on Beartown Road". I had been mourning the
death of a favourite and much loved friend who died from the ravages of a similar brain disease (vascular dementia). Although her body died recently, the soul and the entity that I loved which made her who she was, was taken from me many years ago when the diagnosis was made and the slow but inevitable slide began.

My friend Kath, whom I met in 1980, taught me joy and sharing, she took me into her family as if I was one of her own. As I am of a different background, she taught me to enjoy roast dinners and chocolate ripple cakes. She was a favourite auntie, a surrogate mother and most of all, a best friend. In the later years, I have been unable to be in her presence,
as I couldn't reconcile the angry, violent person as being the same caring friend I had known. She was diagnosed in her 60's which is much too early and didn't allow her to enjoy her twilight years with those she loved and who loved her.

Elizabeth Cohen's book is a beautiful and simply told homage to the reality of family life and in my opinion, a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to life, and all it brings.......2004-07-30

What a wonderful book. I have noticed that many who review this book are intimately involved in Alzheimers, be they professional or private care-givers. I don't have anyone in my immediate family with Alzheimers, but I read this as a potential gift to a friend who does. I am grateful that I was motivated to read this lovely, loving account of a disease and the way if effects those who are near it. The author and her family serve as reminders that love comes in all forms, and may be asked of you at the most inconvient moments. Don't wait until you have Alzheimers in your family to read this book. So much gentle learning to be done, so much joy to be given, so many miles we go, travellers through life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read! You won't want it to end........2004-06-21

Few books have brought me to tears. This one did. The author writes in a matter-of-fact way about the heart-wrenching disease of Alheimer's, its impact to her life, and the lives of those around her. I didn't want the book to end. It is a quick read. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars SUCH FINE WRITING.......2004-05-14

I found "The House on Beartown Road" shelved in our local library (Pound Ridge, NY) under Mental Health/Alzheimer's. I don't know who decides these things, but this wonderful memoir ought to be prominently placed along with other contemporary memoirs. Elizabeth Cohen is a fine writer and she deserves recognition for this generous tribute to her 80-year-old father, Sandy, to her daughter -- one year old Ava, and to new-found neighbors on Beartown Road and to friends in the Binghamton, NY, community. Sandy and Ava of these are at opposite ends of the verbal spectrum, one forgetting language and the other learning. Elizabeth Cohen herself is there in the middle, somehow trying to work full time as a reporter, managing day care for the two people who depend on her, figuring out how to survive the winter in one of the nation's true snow-belts, and keeping her own sanity as a harrassed single mother. My own mother is 97 with Alzheimer's and I have a one-year old granddaughter, so this book is close to the bone in many ways. I tell everybody about it. I use it in the memoir course I teach. I want to keep it to survive as a classic memoir and as a year-long account by an un-self-pitying caregiver. 5 out of 5 stars A very unique look at the Gospel.......2007-09-01

I heard Allan Wright speak at a church function recently and found him very articulate and thought-provoking. Since I read and liked his last book I decided to order his new one. Wright uses Gospel stories about Jesus' interaction in the home life of his family and friends as a guide to spiritual reflection. Each chapter is geared toward group reading with questions for discussion at the end, though it works well for private meditation as well.

Along the way, the author disambiguates the Gospel's English translation to help us understand what's really happening. So much of our scriptural reading is filtered through the prism of our twenty-first century experience and we overlook or misunderstand metaphors that don't even remotely apply to modern life. We've also internalized so much myth that we cannot distinguish it from reality and this myth often alters scriptural understanding. For example, I was quite surprised to find that Jesus wasn't really born in a stable or barn. Rather, he was born in a private home with a manger in it as animals were commonly kept in the home. This popular image of Christ's birth is very much a myth.

I'd highly recommend Wright's book for anyone wishing for a spiritual reflection guide on the Gospels or who wish a better understanding of what the stories really mean.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book...a MUST read!.......2007-06-06

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Wright does a superb job of mixing Scripture and Church history with current day applications. It is obvious that the author is well versed in Scripture and has done an immense amount of research on this topic. Great book for families and group settings.

5 out of 5 stars EVERYONE SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK.......2007-06-02

This new book by Allan Wright should be in everyones house. I particularly like it because you can pick it up and read a random chapter and start reviewing the family situations in your own life and realize how important your family is to your well-being and happiness. Anyone with children will realize how important it is to sit down at mealtime and discuss the days activities with the kids and perhaps learn of their problems and frustrations.

Its a good read and you will be a better person for having read it.
