James Patterson and Peter de Jonge's The Beach House opens with the death of a handsome townie on Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons, where being a single-digit millionaire is laughable and being poor is unthinkable. Peter Mullen is a high school dropout who parks cars at the private bashes of the superwealthy Barry and Campion Neubauer. When Peter is found dead on the beach, the Neubauers and their friends insist that he drowned, but his brother Jack, a law student who saw Peter's body, knows he was beaten to death. As Jack uncovers evidence of his brother's secret life, he begins to realize that the very rich are indeed different from the rest of us. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and Jack's patiently plotted payback for Peter's death is one that the Hamptons will not soon forget.

There are no big surprises in The Beach House, but it's vintage Patterson, with plenty of action, villains with hearts blacker than obsidian, and a working-class hero who pulls himself up by the bootstraps. Patterson and de Jonge previously coauthored the inspirational golf romance Miracle on the 17th Green, but this new game of money, mayhem, and murder clearly suits them to a tee. --Barrie Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Quick, Suspenseful Read of the Summer.......2007-07-27

I could not put this book down. I especially enjoyed Patterson's reference to real life scenarios and applaud his accounts in multicultural writings and versatility from music references to basketball. The book will keep you on your toes. I wish there could have been a better ending as I really liked 'Tom'. Definitely recommend it especially for the not so serious reader, like myself. I thoroughly enjoyed it and you will too.

2 out of 5 stars Beach House - Not my favorite by a long shot.......2007-07-19

I just never got into this book. I'm an avid fan of James Patterson's books... I've purchased so many at airports across the country it is almost comical.

But this one never really drew my in like most others. There just wasn't enough depth to any of the characters and their relationships to each other were missing something. And the ending just did not make sense. I didn't feel there were enough clues to lead me to say "aha" at the end.

Short story - I was disappointed. I won't quit reading... just disappointed in this yarn.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-11

I loved this book! I read it in a day and a half, couldnt put it down. Loved the plot-people taking the law into their own hands. highly recommend!

3 out of 5 stars BY James Patterson & Peter De Jonge?.......2007-06-14

I think Patterson could have done without the help. I like Patterson's style and move-along plots. This plot however, with the autopsy on Peter's body getting passed off as a drowning-suicide, was a disappointment. The rich buy the courts, but not with the kinds of evidence the coroner presented. The ending really frosts the cake when they have their "Kangaroo Court" in the abandoned Beach house over a two-day span. Since it wasn't terrible, I can only give three stars.

J. P. Landry, author of Hazard 666

2 out of 5 stars Hard to believe its a Patterson book!.......2007-06-10

What a waste of time spending that much time, then to have an ending that doesn't make sense at all!! Feel that I wasted my time and money on this one. After recently readingJudge and Jury , hard to believe its written by same person. If you want a good one, pick up Judge & Jury.

3 out of 5 stars Good places but lack of content and small pictures........2007-05-08

Please read the reviews before buying this book since you might get or not what you are looking for.

In my opinion the pictures selected are not bad at all but more than half of them are too small. You'll even find a blank page with a 2" x 2" picture on the upright corner, that's bad since the page is not even populated with content about the picture. It's a global tour of some of the trendiest resorts in the globe but once again poorly presented in terms of content and sizes of the pictures selected. When the pictures are not small then it's the angle selected that doesn't give us a whole idea of the space. The only value that I found was the list of locations that could then be visit by internet for more details. I'm giving it 3 out 5 starts since despite all the cons it was not expensive.

    3 out of 5 stars Tropical Travel.......2004-05-28

A nice book with information on a variety of tropical travel resorts. The photos are great, but too small and info informative. A great idea that could have been executed better. Wonder if they were saving on printing costs since the pictures are so small. Nevertheless, I purchased a copy when it was a bargain book so I don't feel cheated as I do enjoy the book.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Overrated- Must Miss!!.......2002-04-15

Good topic but poor execution. Its obvious that little time was spent producing this book. Compared to similar books, the pictures of the hotels are quite small, limited in number and not of the best quality. Additionally, there are a number of other resorts listed in the back where the author has merely included a brief description of the resort along with a tiny picture. I was expecting more in-depth coverage of these resorts. Also, the map in the front of the book is wrong. They have mislocated certain resorts- placing resorts in the Indian Ocean on the continent of Africa. Sloppy work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Exotic travel & Architecture book, inpirational.......2001-06-12

An exotic travel book and an exotic architecture book in one. Even though I am not a hotel or resort designer, nor am I actively searching for a vacation spot, this book was ideal for me since I was looking to create the open, breezy, jungle feel of these tropical spaces in my own home.

Over twenty different resorts are detailed with numerous photos of each as well as information on design principles, materials used, interior design and amenities. There is also a people and places section give information on the architect, owner, and the resort's history. Sixteen others are contained on single pages with a few small photos and text on the layout and design.

I love the vibrant colors and spacious feel of the Hotel Bel Air Costa Careyes. I also like the Hotel Salto Chico with its abundance of huge windows and the Hotel Bora Bora that has all its bungalows on stilts over the water. Since one day I hope to live in a dome home I love circular layout plan provide by the Banyan Tree Maldives.

I like it that the book features resorts that are have taken steps to be environmentally friendly. In case you would like to visit some of these beautiful places there is a map showing where each is located. Contact information including phone, website and email for each is also here.

This book takes you on a journey through the world to exotic locations. It is great for people looking for exciting travel destinations or for building and décor ideas for their own homes.

I loved this book! Could picture myself and a few friends doing the same thing! Showed how friendships can be repaired and hearts healed. Anyone in their late 30's to mid 40's could probably relate to one of the characters and enjoy this read. Whether you're married, single, in a strained relationship, etc...this will encourage you.

5 out of 5 stars Nurtures friendship, understanding, and faith........2006-12-24

Reviewed by Cherri Vanover and Kim Peterson for Reader Views (12/06)

A beach house in San Diego provides the setting for the reunion of childhood best friends Jo, Andie, Molly and Char. A feeling of homesickness while looking at an old photograph prompts Jo to invite the group to California to rekindle their friendship. The women celebrate their fortieth birthdays together.

The friends have all but drifted apart in the twelve years that have slipped by since they were last together at Molly's wedding. Although they feel delighted to reconnect, getting away doesn't bring the escape from everyday life that they expected. Their past link is influenced by their present situations. The once spunky Andie has faded into a fearful, mousy person under the influence of disparaging husband Paul. Molly and Scott are redefining their marriage now that the former stay-at-home mom and pastor's wife works outside the home as a substitute teacher. A single doctor, Jo struggles to keep from drowning her guilt about past career and relationship choices with alcohol. Neglected dentist's wife and mother Char seems to be overly friendly with her next door neighbor, Todd.

While the beach house setting encourages readers to visit, it is John's characters who invite them to stay. Jo, Andie, Molly and Char seem like real women with real problems readers can relate to and learn from in their own daily lives. Upon finding herself in a predicament that she doesn't like yet believes to be God's will, Molly prays, "Change my heart. Please change my heart." As Andie attempts to check off items on her "Adventure List," she hears in her spirit, "All you have to do is let go." John uses her characters' conflicts to share her faith with her audience in a situational rather than preachy way. What Christian fiction often aims at but struggles to do, John seems to accomplish with ease. This conversational style not only keeps the reader turning pages but also empowers readers to consider and listen for spiritual solutions to their own problems.

John creates a delightfully inviting setting, endearing main characters, intriguing secondary characters and a faith-based story with a message that lingers long after the last page. Fans of women's contemporary Christian fiction will find "The Beach House" a satisfying read.

    5 out of 5 stars True Friendship.......2006-10-04

What an awesome book. It is such a great story of friendship, and what friendship is really about for women. Celebrating all that we are, our differences, our sameness. I laughed, I cried, - A great story. This author does a great job. I'm going to find more of her books. Oh and by the way, a great guideline for turning corners!

5 out of 5 stars The Beach House.......2006-08-14

I absolutely loved this book! I could relate to each of the four women at different times in their lives. It reminded me to take all things to HIM in prayer at ALL times.

    5 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Read.......2006-07-28

I have been a long time reader of Sally John's books, and never once have I been disappointed. In The Beach House, Sally John weaves a lovely story of four childhood friends who have just turned 40, but have lost contact over the last twelve years. To celebrate their respective birthdays, they agree to share a beach house for one week and re-connect. Each woman is experiencing a time of trial, and Sally's expertise and style of writing sweeps the reader along in a medley of emotion, spiritual encouragement, and laughter. What more could a reader want?

This book is a real page-turner, especially if you enjoy historical fiction and time-travel stories. However, the writing wasn't especially great, and I found factual and typographical errors in the text. Overall, enjoyable light reading that will make you want to visit Mohonk and New Paltz, New York.

      Product Description

In a genre all her own (call it: new age, spirituality, self-help or inspiration), Sandy Gingras mixes prose, poetry and artwork to delight readers with witty observation, reflection, and a depth of feeling in her deceptively simple series of books. In a House by the Sea -- a collection of short essays, stories, prose and illustrated vignettes, inspired by a metaphorical beach house -- is about emotion and feeling as much as place, mood and memory as much as the beach. In the essay "This is What Makes Me," she writes of being "oriented in life by a beach (more emotional than geographic) that I keep walking on; a summer (more attitude than season) that I keep longing for." "A is for Attitude" offers a whimsical beach womans A-to-Z ("A is for Away. Away, beach woman, away with you to the beach! You've had enough reality.") "A Beach House What the Realtor Should Have Told You," and "What the Beach House is For," remind us that what we really desire (at the beach or anywhere) can not be bought. This book is a sweet and gentle reminder that simplicity and happiness can emerge from living in the moment, from finding beauty in one's surroundings and an awareness of the moods and feelings that make life whole.

        Book Description

A subtle and powerful work of contemporary fiction.

Combe Island off the Cornish coast has a bloodstained history of piracy and cruelty but now, privately owned, it offers respite to over-stressed men and women in positions of high authority who require privacy and guaranteed security. But the peace of Combe is violated when one of the distinguished visitors is bizarrely murdered.

Commander Adam Dalgliesh is called in to solve the mystery quickly and discreetly, but at a difficult time for him and his depleted team. Dalgliesh is uncertain about his future with Emma Lavenham, the woman he loves; Detective Inspector Kate Miskin has her own emotional problems; and the ambitious Sergeant Francis Benton-Smith is worried about working under Kate. Hardly has the team begun to unravel the complicated motives of the suspects than there is a second brutal killing, and the whole investigation is jeopardized when Dalgliesh is faced with a danger more insidious and as potentially fatal as murder.

This eagerly awaited successor to the international bestseller The Murder Room displays all the qualities that lovers of P. D. James’s novels the world over have come to expect: sensitive characterization, an exciting and superbly structured plot and vivid evocation of place.

5 out of 5 stars A fine survey of options and creative responses to differing coastal environments........2007-08-07

The contemporary beach house designs featured in International Beach Houses comes from top architectural structures around the world - a little over twenty - and includes structures from the U.S., Europe, Asia, South Africa and South America. Books which focus on style often focus on interiors, but this shows floor plans, views and interiors alike, discussing local terrain, culture, and describing the unique architectural approaches of each creation. Art libraries strong in contemporary architecture will find it a fine survey of options and creative responses to differing coastal environments.
