5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2006-08-30

I have an old Victorian House and this book has been a wonderful guide. The styles fit in my 12 foot ceiling rooms like they were meant to be. I don't think this book is for modern homes.

3 out of 5 stars The Dramatic Drapery Book.......2005-12-07

When I see the words curtain, I think something that someone with average skills might be able to create. I think this book should have been called The Drapery Book because the majority of the window styles are much more elaborate than what I consider to be curtains. I am not a decorator so I might have the wrong connotations of the words, but this is what comes to my mind when I see curtains vs drapes.

Most of the styles depicted are beautiful but VERY elaborate and more focused on mansions. The majority of drapes are similar to ones you would see in very wealthy homes, i.e. Hearst Castle and some of the old railroad barons mansions in Florida. Unfortunately, the majority of the book would require some major sewing skills or a custom draperier to create.

This book has only limited info for someone on a stricter budget. Some of the treatments and information could be adapted and implemented in a less ornate setting (pg 29). There are 4 pages devoted to "Keeping it Simple". My favorite part of the book were pages 134-35 where there are illustrations for decorating and throwing fabrics over Poles.

If you are looking for more contemporary, relaxed, simpler "curtains", I would recommend a different book. If you are looking for elaborate, classic-traditional "drapes", this would be the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Of limited use.......2002-12-14

I did not find this book to be very inspirational. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead 1 is because this book would be beneficial to some people. If you like traditional style, like the other reviewers of this book obviously do, this book is probably for you. Everyone else can find other books that give the same level of technical instructions with more range of styles and better photos. The book has a lot of sketches instead of actual photos.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Winner!.......2002-09-16

If you love opulence you won't be disappointed! Page after page of gorgeous photos that inspire. Dozens of ideas. Suggestions for every room in your home. A decorator's delight, professional or not. Complete with a section on fabric types and how best to use them. Simple drawings instruct how to cut fabrics to achieve the look you've chosen. While the book doesn't cover sewing techniques (there are other good books to learn those, and they really don't belong in this book,) it does include patterns that are easy to follow along with 'how to' measuring instructions. This book is a 'must have' for beautiful, distinctive window treatments.

4 out of 5 stars Modern windows with historical connotations.......1998-10-15

This is The book both for the historian (contains numerous period picture presentations) AND anyone needing inspiration for perfectly stunning window treatments. Nothing for a sleak purse though. This is curtains fit for a king.Could be a little heavier on how-to but gorgeous pictures. This book is a home decoraters daydream. It certainly got me dreaming!

Book Description

Jeremiah Eck believes that a distinctive home is the result of a balance between site, floor plan, exterior elements, and interior details. In The Distinctive Home, he describes the significance of each of the four elements and provides numerous examples of good design for each. Included are images and descriptions of 50 houses (ten of them the author's own designs) that cover a wide range of styles, regions, and budgets. A final chapter unifies the four elements in detailed profiles of several of these houses, examining how their components work together to attain the status of "distinctive." 360 color photographs and illustrations are included. 3 out of 5 stars I couldn't wait to get my hands on the book..........2007-08-10

But, sadly I was dissapointed. I recently updated a 'distinctive' home, I cannot think of anything more distinctive that a classic American farmhouse, yet IMO the homes feaured were cold. The Author writes well and is tops at his craft but I was expecting something else. I agree w/ other reviews it pertains more to new construction rather than restoring a historic home.

5 out of 5 stars Great planning tool and resource guide.......2006-08-19

Would highly recommend this book to all! Covers many sound Design ideas, a must have for any designer or architect!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-05-04

I really enjoyed looking at the pictures and picturing in my head what those ideas could look like in my area.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful !.......2003-04-24

Another high-quality, gorgeous book from Taunton Press, a company that I remember from its inception when I lived in Newtown, Connecticut!

This book is full of countless beautiful color photos and drawings that add immensely to the author's viewpoints and to his descriptions of the components of a distinctive home.

Eck discusses every aspect of a home: siting the house; the roof; the landscaping, and everything in between. He overlooks no detail that will aid homeowners in deriving a sense of satisfaction from their homes. The homes he describes are livable and comfortable.

I especially liked reading Eck's four elements of a "pleasing" house and the significance and importance he attaches to each element.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy it if you suffer from serious house-envy..........2003-04-23

...if you are the sort of person who dreams of building your perfect house some day, this book will give you conniption fits, and leave you absent-mindedly drawing little floor plans on napkins in restaurants.

Eck's framework for the book cites four sources of great design: siting the house on the property, floor plans, exterior (elevation) and final details. This makes the book more balanced than those that just focus on, say, the floor plan and finish.

I found his discussion of the 'massing' of the house to be fascinating. It went a long way towards explaining why the too-large floor plans of the usual suburban house today--although in many cases just traditional layouts blown up by 50%--just don't look quite right.

That said, the book is predominantly oriented towards relatively empty-nester second homes in relatively rural locations. With some pleasant exceptions, these are not houses for people who have to, say , wonder where to store the dirty soccer equipment or the snow blower, or where their kid's model collection is going to go.

They ARE beautiful, though - I swear that some day I'm going live on p.107!!

Excellent for the beginner to the advanced woodworker. Covers framing considerations well, as well as atachment schemes and fasteners.

2 out of 5 stars This book needs an editor.......2005-05-09

Don't think this book will help most people. There are too many dimensions missing and wrong. On the Federal mantel the writeup says cut the columns 10 1/2 inches wide but the drawing shows 12 inches. The picture of the mantel shows a full brick clearance at the side of the firebox but the drawing is more like 5 inches.
I got an idea of how a mantel could be made but you must work out your own dimensions. There is no bill of materials as stated before. I think there must be better books on this subject. Not too important but one screw is drawn with left had screws. I am a machanical engineer trying to do wood work.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book on Focused Topic.......2002-12-07

This is an outstanding book on a focused topic: "Distinctive [Fireplace] Projects for any Style Home." After discussing some basics of mantel making, he describes in detail from start to finish, step-by-step, including a materials list, suppliers, and tools needed for nine projects to build nine different style firelplace mantels: Simple Colonial, Georgian, Simple Federal, Arts and Crafts, Mackintosh, Victorian, Greene and Greene, Art Deco, and Contemporary. We are updating a fifty-year old home in Coral Gables, Florida. It presently has a very pedestrian fireplace mantel. I wanted a fireplace mantel with more style. My wife and I both loved the Art Deco mantel in the book and I plan to build it almost exactly as described. I should save a considerable amount of money on materials because the mantel is built basically from one sheet of mahogany plywood. The color photographs are also outstanding in clarity and detail.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful & user friendly!.......2004-02-09

My sister found this book years ago when she was looking for sites for her wedding. I used it to help find a location for my companies 25th anniversary party. I had to buy a newer version when I was scouting locations for my own wedding! If found wonderful places I never heard of before. It saved me a lot of time and energy by eliminating contacting places that would not have been a good fit.

5 out of 5 stars Every bride needs this book!!.......2004-02-04

My husband and I are not from the DC area, but have settled here. We knew we wanted a DC area wedding, knew we wanted it outdoor, but didn't know where to go from there. This book breaks down sites by how many guests it can accomodate, and lets you know prices, rules, etc. This saved me hours of phone calls and pointless drives to sites that wouldn't have been right for us. If you know the DC area, this might not be the right book for you, but for us carpetbaggers, it was a lifesaver!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for planning a wedding and other events!.......2001-11-30

I used an earlier edition, but I would assume they won't differ too much. This was an invaluable resource for our initial wedding planning. We were able to find out ahead of time and w/o phone calls that some sites we were interested in were too small to accomodate our guests. And, then we used it to investigate locations we had never thought of, or knew existed.

I have also used the book as a resource when planning social events for a non-profit association. Again, we narrowed our selections based on size and found locations that we did not know of.

My event planning went much more smoothly because of this book, and I have loaned it to several friends who have also praised its resources.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New Under the (D.C) Sun.......2001-04-04

When our two daughters recently became engaged, I ran out to buy this new Unique Places book, written by local author Elise Ford. For the price,(around $20 including shipping. For our weddings, each around 120 guests for sit-down dinner, I found this book not helpful. Locally distributed free publications have more information, more sites, similar information on costs, and are more a propos for planning weddings. This book would be useful for an organization, or for planners of galas or huge corporate functions. Most of the interesting locations do not allow private parties, especially weddings. A small percentage of the locations would be suitable for 'small' parties of around 100. I will donate this book to a non-profit organization I belong to. Many sites are excellent for large non-profit gatherings. Other sites have their own food preparation on site so renter can't bring in one's own caterer. A few private clubs are included, but not enough. This book might be helpful to some people, but not to this family. I should have checked it out in the library first. Mea culpa! Fine for event planners... but not mothers of brides.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for GREAT party!.......2000-02-24

Absolutely wonderful reference book if you are looking for a place in the Washington, DC area to have a special party. Arranges different sites by size, area, type etc. Is very useful and convenient to use. Saves hours of phone calls!

Painstakingly reproduced from a rare edition, this volume offers old-house restorers, preservationists, and lovers of 1920s architecture an authentic view of American homes of the era.

Fine examples of a type of photorealistic drawing that you don't see anymore, which are reason enough to buy the book. The majority of homes are Tudor or Old English, like the ones on the cover, with just a few Colonials and Bungalows mixed in. The writing is quaint, with bedrooms called chambers, and mentions of breakfast nooks, servant's quarters, and telephone cabinets.

"Distinctive House Design and Decor of the Twenties: With Over 500 Floor Plans and Illustrations," edited by Richardson Wright, is yet another in Dover's superb series of architectural reprints. The bibliographic note on this book's copyright page states that it "is an unabridged republication of the work originally published by the Conde Nast Publications, Inc., New York in 1925 under the title _House & Garden's Second Book of Houses_."

This volume is full of great visual material: floor plans, elevation drawings, drawings and photos of interior furnishings, drawings of landscaping ideas, and photos of actual houses and architectural details. The book also contains a lot of text. The articles include "Hints for Builders and Buyers," "How to Build a Smokeless Fireplace," "Facts about Paints, Stains and Varnish," and more.

Many different architectural styles are represented: Georgian, Spanish, Tudor, French, bungalow, Dutch colonial. The photos, drawings, and floor plans are full of fascinating details: brickwork, molding styles, bay windows, dormers, wrought iron balconies, fireplaces, chimneys, and more. If you are interested in period home architecture, don't miss this great book. Thanks again, Dover!

One thing you can definitely say about this hardcover honey--you get a lot of bang for your 40 bucks: over 1,000 full-color photographs of interiors for every room in the basic home, grouped into such "Choices" as Traditional, Country, Global, and Modern, and such "schemes" as Neutral, Hot, Cool, Fresh, and Muted (where's Unscented?), plus up-close swatches for all fabrics featured in every layout, with each sample keyed to a supplier in the U.K. (where the book was produced) and/or the U.S. That's the plus side. On the minus side, both the running copy and the caption copy will likely be too pedestrian for all but the greenest interior designers (professionals or hobbyists), and regardless of the "style" they represent, the interiors shown here suffer almost uniformly from a kind of excess and overkill, almost as if they're meant to be, if not parodies, then broad-stroke pop approximations of their respective genres. Moreover, everything seems to be copping a bit from looks that were hot at least three years before the book was published. Many of the "lush" or "romantic" spreads call to mind a Versace photo shoot circa 1988, while the "rustic" and "minimal" spreads quote two of the big decorating fads of the mid-90s--Shabby Chic and Terence Conran. There is one near-perfect composition, though: flip to pages 174-75 to view a midcentury-modern drawing room so palely elegant it nearly justifies purchase of the rest of the book, especially if you're new to the trade or game of interior design. --Timothy Murphy

4 out of 5 stars Look through my window.......2004-07-28

If you've got a nice, sunshiny yard, why not gussy it up a little with one of the contemporary curtain ensembles that decorators now call, window treatments? I found Creative Publishing's guide to be insightful and a true resource, it's good even with the basement windows that my X put inwhile trying to give a basement woodshop some natural light, but on the other hand nosy neighbors mean that you have to have some cloth over the glass.

Whether your view overlooks a garden in the country, or St. Patrick;s Cathedral in the city, you'll want a book like this here "More Creative Window Treatments" so you can look at the color photos and decide for yourself, and for your family, which setting would look nicest. And then the book gives you complete instructions for how to sew it together yourself. Or perhaps you can enlist the assistance of the birds and mice Disney's Cinderella used to help her whip together her gown!

2 out of 5 stars Only if you can sew..........2002-07-01

While this book does have a few pictures, they seem quite old. The one or two items I liked didn't have any instructions for. If you are not a sewer, than this book is not for you. I found the book very confusing - definitely written for the person with sewing background. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas, directs you to a professional window treatment.......2001-02-05

This was one of three books I purchased on window treatments; I turn to this one for advice and direction. Step by step directions with pictures on such topics as installing hardware, including hanging a mounting board, to the basics of sewing. Great ideas for rod pocket curtains and custom shades. I used it to create two different window treatments, scarf swag and shoji-style screen. Each project tells you how to measure and materials required. Due to the great instructions, both treatments turned out very professional!!
