"Victorian" may mean "fussy" to some, but as this book shows, it's all in the proportions. The rooms shown here are delightfully unfussy, instead warm and inviting--the polished wood gleams, the Persian carpets glow with faded splendor, and the view from the white wicker-furnished veranda goes on for miles. The text explains how the Victorian era fostered several style reforms: the midcentury Gothic and rococo revivals, the aesthetic movement of the 1880s, and Art Nouveau. There's plenty of interesting reading here for a social-history buff, lots of interiors to delivately swoon over (such as the dining room with "Jam tomorrow and jam yesterday but never jam today" stenciled on the walls), and a large section of tips for adding Victorian style to a modern home without compromising its integrity.

Book Description
Discover how to recreate and restore authentic period architecture, furnishings and detailing in the Victorian Gothic style.
As Linda Osband demonstrates in this fact-filled volume, the Gothic Revival caught the fancy of many Victorians who sought refuge in supposedly simpler days. Picturesque castles and cathedrals with spiky towers, high-gabled roofs and medieval ornament provided just the escape needed from all the rigours and gritty reality of the industrial revolution.
A celebration of one of the most exuberant styles of the period, Victorian Gothic House Style provides the ideal source of inspiration and reference for anyone wishing to re- create or preserve Gothic houses and interiors with style and confidence, by combining specially commissioned photographs and extensive source material from contemporary catalogues with informative and practical text.
Accompanied by an historical appreciation of the period in architecture and interiors, as well as through its influential designers, there is practical information on re-creating the effect plus a comprehensive list of stockists and suppliers.
Linda Osband has edited many books on a wide range of non-fiction subjects and has complied an anthology of Victorian travellers. she is also the author of the successful Victorian House Style, also published by David & Charles. Linda lives in London.

Victorian Gothic House Style.......2001-07-19
Linda Osband has done an admirable job of collecting images from England and the United States to help illustrated the Gothic Revival Movement. What she falls short on in text she makes up for in picture and engravings. It is not as comprehensive as I was hoping and there are some areas that I would have appreciated a more in-depth explanation: facades and furniture that identify the period being top of the list. The samples she has for gothic kitchens are modern but she supplements them with appliance advertisements from the 1870s-1890s. This helps identify what was used during this time, not necessarily practical now. She also incorporates the use of advertisements for tile samples and patterns that were available as well as ironwork. She covers all aspects of Gothic Revival from the outside to the interior to the furniture to the conservatory. Overall, there are some good ideas and good reading to be found if you are planning on restoring a residence or creating a period dollhouse. Highly recommend.

Victorian details.......2000-07-09
This book details life for an upper middle class family in London about 1880. If your interest is in American life of the period, some of the details will be different, but the book is still very useful, and the illustrations, most of them photographs, are excellent. Some good information on the technology of housekeeping. Interestingly, the "Places to Visit" listed at the back are all in the U.S.
Excellent, colorful teacher's reference!.......1999-01-27
As a teacher, I feel that this book is an excellent demonstration of visual learning! This book displays everything from the layout of Victorian Houses to their clothes, servants, chores, social manners and etiquette, and customs. I recommend this book for any child interested in the time period or any teacher who has to teach it!

The Victorian House Book.......2006-03-06
Wow! A lot of work went into this one. It is excellent in all respects.
Lively writing describes Victorian life.......2002-10-11
Although this is a mainly a design book for the Victorian home owner, and a good one, with several excellent pictures on every page, it is also a history book. The author explains how each new wallpaper style, or window treatment, or ceiling ornament, and so on, is a consequence of this Paris Exhibition, or that widely circulated pattern book, or the writings of this influential person.
And considerable research and effort went into the book. In addition to the pictures, which cover subjects in Britain, America, and occasionally Australia, there are cutaway drawings showing construction of masonry and wood houses, and, at the close of every chapter, a page or two of drawings to illustrate typical ballusters, wall lamps, wardrobes, etc.
It was written for an American audience, going by the spellings and the list of suppliers in the appendix, by an Englishman, who occasionally gets things wrong. Like saying that at the turn of the century porches fell out of favor here and were replaced by conservatories. But his advice on restoration is always good.
Although it's an engaging history of the era, it's not a how-to book. The final chapter on repairs is familair material, although it might contain something you've not seen before: sample floor plans for a typical basement or attic conversions.

Step-by-step project book by VICTORIA MAGAZINE.......2007-09-01
As my title said, this is a step-by-step project book written by the editors of VICTORIA MAGAZINE.
The book has very pretty photos at the very beginning of every project, and then it provides step-by-step instructions which have diagrams following each step to the project making.
There are not that many projects though, so that's why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 stars.
Charming !.......2006-12-30
I may not make all of the projects suggested inside but they are lucious to look at. I like adapting ideas to suit my particular design style and needs. I usually purchase books published more than 2 yrs old from the Used sellers.
