Book Description
Western design has evolved from the limitations of log-style architecture, simple and rough-hewn lodgepole pine furnishings, brightly colored leather, and Chimayo weavings to stately interiors that are graceful, elegant, and highly polished, incorporating upscale fabrics and ornamentation.

A Coffee Table Staple.......2006-01-03
We spent several serene hours with Thea Marx's book of Contemporary Western Design. Reading her favorable Amazon reviews, it is obvious that both Ms. Marx's book and western design are appreciated well beyond the west.
Contemporary Western Design.......2006-01-02
With her book, Contemporary Western Design - High-style Furniture & Interiors, Thea Marx has created a masterwork in words and pictures; capturing the essence of this truly authentic, dynamic school of American design and the skilled, dedicated artisans, achitects and designers who pour their passion and inspiration into the furniture and homes captured in this book. Writing with flair and insight, Ms. Marx displays an insiders understanding of her subject. Throughout the book, her prose and images breathe life into each piece featured. This book is a must have for anyone interested in the American West, the spirit of creativity or superb craftsmanship. Bravo, Thea, a job beautifully done.
A Legacy .......2005-12-20
Sitting here with book in hand, I will have to say it is a work of art in itself. Contemporary Western Design is obviously a labor of love by Ms. Marx and each participating artisan and designer as well. I have collected books for over 25 years relating to rustic and Western design and this one ranks up there with the best I've seen. I love the way so many individual pieces are showcased allowing the reader to appreciate the detailing and see the stories they have to tell. Ms. Marx's experience and love of promoting Western design proves to be her true calling. She's created not only a wonderful resource of artisans for those that love the Western lifestyle but has also produced a legacy to the school of Western design.
Book Description
Smile of the Buddha explores the influences of Asian world-views and particularly Buddhism on the art of Europe and America in the modern era. In an informative and perceptive introduction and essays on twenty well-known artists, Jacquelynn Baas analyzes how the teachings of the Buddha offered alternatives to Western intellectual conceptions of art and traces the various ways this inspiration materialized in artworks. The influence of Buddhism on art from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the present has been greater than historians and critics generally recognize, Baas claims. Considering essential questions about the relationship of art and life, this timely and beautifully illustrated book expands our perspective on how spirituality and creativity inspire and inform one another. Baas's insights and the images she presents give the reader a new understanding and appreciation of a diverse array of Western artworks.
Customer Reviews:
An art historian unravels a Buddhist mystery.......2006-02-27
The best books make us think, by showing relationships between realms we had not thought connected. Just so, Jacquelynn Baas breaks new ground in SMILE OF THE BUDDHA: EASTERN PHILOSOPHY AND WESTERN ART FROM MONET TO TODAY.
By exploring the influences of Asian thought in general and Buddhism in particular on European and American artists of the modern era, Baas takes her readers on a breathtaking leap across time and geography.
That she lands squarely on target is attested by art historians and scholars of Buddhism who have praised this book as "careful and intelligent," "thoughtful and richly detailed," "high spirited" and "a crucial contribution to modern art studies."
My own take, as a lay reader with no credentials in either art history or Asian thought, is that Baas, Director emeritus of the University of California Art Museum, has created a most unusual hybrid: a handsomely illustrated coffee table volume with a fascinating detective story woven among its color plates.
Like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, historical magnifying glass in hand, she investigates a bevy of mysteries. How was it that Taoist and Buddhist emphasis on change infiltrated European culture through, of all things, the English Romantic Garden? How did Buddhist philosophy appeal to artists including Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin? How did Asian aesthetic theory open a path to abstract painting for Georgia O'Keeffe? How did Buddhism influence Marcel Duchamp to imagine new connections between artist, viewer and object, helping change the very definition of "art"?
Bringing her story into the present, Baas sheds light on the role of Zen in the music and performance art of John Cage, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono and Laurie Anderson.
Baas and her publisher, University of California Press, are to be congratulated on an important book that has something new to say, and says it well - in a manner sufficiently documented do pass muster with the experts, and approachable enough to keep the rest of us interested.

Book Description
Sounds of the Inner Eye explores the artistic and biographical connection among three of the Pacific Northwestís most significant and highly respected artists.
Mark Tobey, often aligned with the abstract expressionists, was a pioneer in integrating elements of Asian art into mystical, calligraphic paintings. Morris Graves, known as something of an art world maverick, combined Eastern religious beliefs and a deep appreciation of the natural world in his work, focusing initially on the Northwestís birds and vegetation. John Cage, an avant-garde composer, philosopher, writer, and printmaker, began his visual creations with graphic representations of musical scores, and then evolved to include printmaking, drawing, and watercolor.
Sounds of the Inner Eye explores the lives and careers of these three men who were instrumental in leading a community of artists, patrons, and scholars into a deeper understanding of the potential and power of art and, in turn, had a large impact on much of what followed in modern art in America. Known as the Northwest Mystics, they were influenced by Eastern philosophies and the natural beauty of the Pacific Rim. Their legendary nickname has remained over time, helping to establish the Northwest as a center for artistic talent, worthy of the admiration of the international art community.

Book Description
Controversy inevitably accompanies attempts at land protection, even in cases of large, uninhabited, economically marginal locations. In 1994, for example, the California Desert Protection Act created the Mojave National Preserve, the third largest national park in the lower forty-eight states. The act transferred three million acres of southern California desert from the Bureau of Land Management to the National Park Service. As a result, explains Elisabeth M. Hamin, the National Park Service became a multiple-use manager, balancing its official mission of environmental protection with oversight of such activities as hunting, ranching, and mining.
In Mojave Lands: Interpretive Planning and the National Preserve, Hamin explains how this new role came about. Drawing on interviews with people on various sides of the issue -- from mining lobbyists to local ecotourism operators, legislators to gun advocates -- she shows how the differing parties argued and compromised over land protection. From their success, Hamin derives lessons for reimagining national parks to achieve broadly shared goals.
Introducing the concept of "interpretive planning" -- a method that takes into account conflicting views of all interested parties -- she offers explicit steps for the planner and policy analyst to use. This book will appeal to scholars and students in environmental studies, planning and landscape architecture and history, as well as professionals in planning, resource management, the National Park Service, and related conservation organizations, public and private.

Customer Reviews:
What a Gorgeous Book!!.......2001-07-06
I just decorated my entire apartment in a fusion-asian style and this book was the last item I bought - to sit on my coffee table and accentuate the living room. I look at it all the time!!
Beautiful pictures throughout. What a wonderful book!!
China......SO CHIC!.......2001-02-17
If you are interested in Chinese art, culture, clothing, and history, then this is your Bible. Chalked full of photos that pop off the page. This witty and interesting book takes you from Ming to present day China. Vivienne Tam reflects on her life, born in mainland China, raised in Hong Kong, then moving to New York. She tells charming stories about what has influenced and inspired her and her collections. Great interviews with members of China's creative community, and who can forget Mao? The book is designed like a large coffee table version of Mao's little red book! This is simply stunning.
Hong Kong and China Brilliantly Observed.......2000-12-19
Big book with stunning and bright photo illustrations that "bleed" off the page.
Ms. Tam understands the style of Hong Kong and China (especially Shanghai) like few others; the best of that style is all here. She writes with enthusiasm and love for many essential aspects of the appeal of a culture known for its centuries-old aesthetic and for its mass-production and other mass sensibilities.
Tam's education at the Hong Kong Polytechnic gives her a unique vantage point for isolating Chinese chic. She can view Cultural Revolution paraphrenalia with the eye of a designer, collector, and artist, rather than with painful memories. In a show of global sophistication, she understands East-meets-West sensibility (her chapter on Chinglish is told with an appealing tenderness). The text comes off without a shimmer of self-consciousness or compulsion to 'be Chinese.' There is camp, sex, zen, pizzazz and beauty, exploding off of every page and augmented by Tam's tales of exploration and appreciation.
Bonus interviews with composer Tan Dun and choreographer/visionary Danny Yung are painfully short, but the reader still gets a healthy dose of young Chinese intelligensia. The text is endearingly personal, Vivienne Tam sharing with the reader what her senses take in. It's quite delightful.
Great keepsake for people who have visited Hong Kong or Shanghai!
Stunning!.......2000-12-12
Unbelievable new book--from the red plastic cover (meant to mirror, and mock, the Little Red Book of Mao Tse-tung) to the great historic photos to the informative text and interviews, this is a unique creation. It's part autobiography (Tam was born in China, moved to Hong Kong at age 3, and grew up there), part fashion history, part contemporary culture, and all fun. Special chapter called "Mao Crazy," on the cult of Mao is worth the cost of the book alone.`
