Book Description
The color-imaging industry is on the threshold of major transformation and enormous expansion as digital color technology comes of age, bringing high-quality color to desktop systems and the Internet. However, the technology is not without challenges. In particular, it must contend with an ever-increasing variety of imaging devices and media. At the same time, it must produce predictable color results from individual systems and provide successful exchange of digital color images among different types of systems. Digital Color Management: Encoding Solutions offers engineers, scientists, and programmers practical solutions to these and other challenges of color imaging in the digital domain. Going beyond standard color-measurement techniques, this book describes advanced methods for digitally representing and communicating color. It provides clearly written background on the science of color and imaging technology, a detailed explanation of digital color encoding today, and an examination of the issues involved in creating a truly device-independent, unified, color-managed environment compatible with all major platforms and devices. Combining the expertise of Edward Giorgianni and Thomas Madden, two principal developers of many color-encoding methods and interchange standards used throughout the color-imaging industry, this book provides a first-hand account of the current state of that industry and an insightful look at its future. The book also features: over 350 full-color figures and photographs; appendices covering the details of color-interchange transformations for current systems, including PhotoYCC, Cineon, FlashPix, and systems using International Color Consortium profile format standards; and a foreword by world-renowned color scientist R.W.G. Hunt.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning!.......1998-08-07
I have attended several of Mr. Giorgianni's tutorials on color management in recent years and have found him to be an outstanding instructor. His book brings into focus the complex issues in color management and explains them all with unparalled insight. I'm sure that this was a very difficult book to write and produce. The authors and the publisher deserve the thanks of the digital imaging community.
This book will endure for decades as the book to beat........1998-05-11
I am the author of eight books, and my latest one is on digital imaging. In a word, I find Digital Color Management astounding - both in scope and in clarity. The writing is superb and the material is beautifully illustrated. I believe this book clearly reaffirms Kodak researchers as a prescient within the imaging industry. My only criticism is that this book was not available while I conducted my latest research. If you are involved in any aspect of contemporary imaging technology, not having this book places you at a distinct disadvantage. Thank goodness not too many books like this come along - it is enough to give any author pause, if not despair, as to what a technical book should be.

Theyre bright kids, but theyre having reading problems and difficulty in school because nobody has ever asked the right questions. By chance, a mother encountered a scientifically proven Eolution that has already helped thousands. Her personal story shows readers what they can do about this =ighly prevalent, commonly overlooked, but readily addressed condition.
Customer Reviews:
The Light Barrier.......2005-07-20
This is a thought-provoking book. The subject is a complicated phenominon that should be examined by peer review in similar, less anecdotal evidence. As a graduate engineer and a long-time photographer, I am aware of some of the properties of light itself as perceived by humans, and view this subject with considerable interest. One of my grandchildren has benefited substantially from Irlen prescribed glasses. Thus,I look forward to future examination of this phenominon.
Impressive and readable.......2004-03-05
This is a good, solid book on the topic of light-related reading problems. The author, who has problems with light sensitivity herself, has two children who encountered reading problems and other problems of visual perception that were remedied by using tinted lenses and colored sheets of plastic. She describes their lives before getting glasses and overlays, the puzzlement of opthalmologists and other specialists, and the vast improvement in their lives afterwards.
This book is more readable and goes further than its counterpart, Helen Irlen's _Reading by the Colors_. In particular, it describes people whose visual perception is distorted everywhere, not just on the printed page. This is a little-discussed aspect of the phenomenon that has come to be known as Irlen syndrome, since the original discovery of the use of color in helping people's visual perception was based on reading alone.
However, it still mostly concentrates on reading and contends that anyone with severe enough visual perception problems for everything to be distorted would have significant reading difficulties too. I am an autistic and hyperlexic person whose level of visual distortion in everyday life has been described as severe, but whose reading is relatively unaffected despite distortion of the printed page. I was puzzled when my Irlen screener described me as having more severe Irlen syndrome than he did, because it seemed to me that he had more severe reading problems than I had ever had. The book makes the same mistake, and also describes people like me as extremely rare. It makes me wonder if we are simply under-researched because we don't present with reading difficulties, and if time will show greater understanding of our particular kind of visual perception issues. This is the only significant hole I could see in the research the author had done.
A more minor problem I saw was that the book sought to excuse the high price and virtual monopoly by one company of the screening and tinting techniques. As a person on a very limited income, I only went to them and paid that much because I was desperate to be able to leave my house without being visually assaulted with distorted fragments of color. I wished that there were high-quality options available without paying all that money, and was disappointed to see that the book glossed over this by proclaiming it cheap in comparison to exorbitant prices I could never afford for other educational techniques or vision therapies.
The glossy section in the middle of the book goes beyond showing reading distortions, and shows distortions of the rest of the world as well. It also shows the same text with a number of different colored backgrounds, showing how this might affect a person's reading comprehension. There are sections for parents and for professionals, although none on what to do if you are an adult discovering that you have these problems. Many of the suggestions, though, can be used by anyone.
The author has done an extensive amount of research into the subject, understands that a lot is not known about why these things work, and provides lists of studies at the back that are pro, con, and neutral on the topic of color as used in helping people with reading difficulties. There is also a list of Internet resources at the back.
This is probably the best book on its topic to date, and I'd highly recommend it. I look forward to books that take some elements of this book, particularly its discussion of the non-reading-related aspects of Irlen syndrome (visual distortion and fragmentation) that apply to my life more than the reading-related ones do, and go further with them, though.
A Must Read!.......2002-10-24
This readable book is a "must read" for parents, teachers, and other professionals concened with the education and welfare of children. It also has implications for the workforce where employees suffer from light sensitivity in the form of headache and fatigue, lowered productivity, and absences from work.
This is a well researched, balanced presentation of an intervention that has proven itself with thousands around the world who suffer from light based sensitivity.
The Light Barrier.......2002-10-04
This carefully researched work unveils an invisible barrier that may affect 10 million American children in private and public schools who experience reading difficulties. Ms. Stone provides direction and ideas for both parents and professionals to help find a solution for those who may be labeled as underachievers.
The Light Barrier is a "must read" for every educator, pediatrician, and eye care professional who deals with students, of any age, who are struggling with classroom learning.
She has validated what I have been hearing repeatedly in my years of working with both the dyslexic and Irlen/scotopic population.
The Light Barrier.......2002-10-04
This book tells of the problems that children and adults are having and the difficult time they have finding a solution to the problem. The world want to put the everyone on drugs with all the side effects, without realizing there is a non-invasive way of dealing and eliminating the problem. Rhonda Stone does an incredible job writing about her own experiences with her kids and the ordeals they had to go through to finally find a solution.
I too have Irlen Syndrome and boy has the technology helped me.
Great job Rhonda.

Customer Reviews:
Wished it was longer............2007-01-12
I liked this book & although it had some info that is already in print in some of BH&G other publications...what sets this book apart is the format.
Some of Vicki Ingham's other books have also been very good so keep your eye out for her name.
Positives....covered some great questions such as... Coordinating brick & it's various color combinations with the rest of the decor...
Ceiling color....another good question rarely discussed in enough detail... Dealing with different colors of wood...there's one you don't hear much about... & wow....even discussed seasonal changes & how do adapt color for that.... Kudos for covering these important...much neglected topics.
Here's what I thought was missing... More in depth coverage on how lighting affects & changes colors. There should have definitely been some discussion on how/when/where to choose paint colors, finishes etc.
Also sorely missing is some color help in dealing with specific style of homes, or period/heritage homes...etc. that would have been icing on the cake.
Overall I still give the book 4 stars....has some very useful info & found it to be helpful in many ways....my only caveat is that the book wasn't longer & even more detailed than it is.
Excellent color resource.......2006-05-18
I like the overall organization of the book. It's a unique approach from other color books I have. It addresses the most common questions many of us have about color and then answers them, providing several options for each question. Great photos and explanations.
Good Book for Color Questions.......2006-01-22
I thought this book was very helpful, but it IS one that you will need to read to get the full scope of information. Even though the picture captions give some information, the real tips are in the text. It is a good complement to the BH&G book "Color Schemes."
This book addresses color by taking some common questions and providing solutions for addressing the problem. For example, "I Can't Change My Carpet, What Should I Do?, " provides several options using text and photographs of the solutions. There is a photo of a room w/blue carpet and Option 2 states to shift the color scheme in a new direction. They decorated the room with a taupe wall color and pulled in accessories that complement the blue carpet. It looks good.
I generally like decorating books where you don't have to read a lot and can get an idea just by looking at pictures. You CAN do that with this book, BUT you will miss a lot of good information and tips in the text.
If you are looking for books with various color palettes, I recommend "Color Schemes"; if you want a book that helps you solve some color dilemma's you might want to give this one a try. I think both books are great additions to a decorating library.
This book is very helpful and beautiful to look at........2004-01-14
I'm very pleased with this book. I wanted something that would help me figure out what colors to use, whether or not to paint the molding, and how to make one room flow with another. This book addressed all of those issues and more! I am very pleased with the layout and how the book is set up as a Q&A format. I would highly recommend this book.
boring and drab.......2003-12-13
This book doesn't look any different than any BH&G magazine out on the newsstand - and maybe it's the same thing just tweeked a bit. Lot's of pictures, but sadly this book offers few new or fresh ideas. Save your pennies, friends!

Customer Reviews:
Great Basic Colored Pencil Book.......2007-05-24
This book has absolutely gorgeous drawings, something lacking in most of the other colored pencil books. It contains all the basics one would need to learn before picking up a colored pencil; everything from A to Z. The book is easy to read and fun. There are no lenghy discussions on the theories of the colored pencil medium: it gets right to the point. The second half of the book has detailed instructions on how to achieve certain textures, which I haven't seen in other books, such as glass, copper, silver, lace... all with absolutely jaw dropping examples. I bought it along with "Drawing for Right Side of the Brain", which makes a fantastic course on the mechanics of drawing itself. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
A partial solution at best.......2007-05-17
A better title for this book would be Color Pencil Solution Book for Realistic Still Life Drawing. People and animals have merely one or two appearances each among the examples, and land- and seascapes have no representation at all. It would have been an excellent reference to showcase multiple styles also, but we see only the work of the two authors, whose styles are very similar. The topics that are presented are well presented, and if realistic still life is your thing, this book will be a good resource. But if your interest is in multiple styles and landscapes or portraits, you'll often be looking elsewhere for solutions.
Very helpful .......2007-03-08
There are so many ways to use colored pencil. I like Janie's work, she is so precise and accurate. This book helps you with various techniques. It's like a trouble shooter for your colored pencil art work.
A fabulous book.......2006-06-16
I have read many coloured pencil books, but this is the only one I have bought or kept. I refer to it often for ideas on how to combine colours or figure out a problem. Some might say that it isn't broad enough, but you have to be willing to take the basic ideas and develop your own solutions as well :-)
Better than the $175 workshop I just attended!.......2005-04-19
I just paid $175 to attend a colored pencil workshop by a woman that I thought was going to really help me with my work instead she said that this book was what got her started. I found that 99% of what this woman taught in the class was ALL from this book I already owned!! So save yourself money on workshops from so-called "famous" teachers & invest in this book!! You won't be sorry & it will teach you so much!!!! By the way, the reviewer who wants a less realistic approach to cp , there are too many cp books out there like that already (Bet Borgeson, Michael Warr, & 2 Walter Foster ones).

Book Description
Breaking Designer?s Block is a vast collection of some of the most varied work from the world?s leading designers. This book is broken down into three core areas: color, type, and materials.
The color section opens with a historical look at the colors pallets that have dominated each decade from 1900 through to the end of the century and is followed by an extensive collection of graphic work whose use of color has driven the design of that piece. Whether bold or subtle, symbolic or clich?, each piece is inspired and well crafted.
The type section opens in the same manner as the color section but focuses on the various fonts that have been popular over the decades. This feature offers readers the ability to use accurate historical design treatments in their work for appropriate projects. This section is followed by a collection of 12 top designers from around the world who are known for their powerful use of type including: Jonathan Barnbrook, Typerware, Plazm Media, Smay Vision, Fred Woodward / Rolling Stone magazine, and DJ Stout.
The final section of the book takes a look at a wide array of innovative graphic design pieces that have incorporated imaginative materials to convey powerful messages, and connect with audiences on a deeper level. This exceptional collection, from fur-covered books to Christmas cards stitched on men?s briefs, clearly demonstrates the remarkable power that designers have to engender wonder, excitement, and a sense of ownership, in today's consumers.
An invaluable resource for fresh ideas, Breaking Designer?s Block will stimulate and inspire designers to open their minds--and their art--to create work that is memorable, thought provoking and visually driven.
Customer Reviews:
Awful 'type tracker' section.......2005-05-18
While there are a lot of very nice case studies in this book, and the notes on colour usage are probably worth the cover price, the type tracker section is just plain wrong. True it's only a sixteen page section in a 356 page book, but as any designer will tell you 'it's all in the details...'
The publishers blurb states 'The type section... focuses on the various fonts that have been popular over the decades. This feature offers readers the ability to use accurate historical design treatments in their work for appropriate projects.'
I disagree with this statement, I disagree with Cheryl Dangel Cullens' analyses of the 'period' fonts reproduced on these pages and above all I would urge readers to find better historical type reference elsewhere.

Book Description
Contending that the media and the black community allocate too much of their efforts to talking about the problems afflicting the African American community, this book attempts to reverse that trend by offering solutions in many areas, including education, family, health, economics, politics, organizing, and Afrocentricity. Concerned that one-third of black America and one-half of its children live below the poverty line, activist and educator Jawanza Kunjufu expresses his concern about whether affirmative action and integration have really helped this population. Many diverse schools of thought are expressed, from the differences between Ward Connerly and Jesse Jackson and between U.S. Supreme Justice Clarence Thomas and Al Sharpton. Also addressed is what percentage of the problem and their solutions lie with the effects of slavery and what portion should be addressed by self-responsibility.
Customer Reviews:
Great advice, some of this will never happen.......2006-04-07
Solutions for Black America is a great book. I am extremely pleased that Jawanza Kunjufu has written it. This is basically a step by step analysis of each problem in the African American community, and a series of solutions to go with it. I particularly found the chapters on Education and parenting the most enlightening. And even though I don't agree with many things written here, I must still strongly recommend this to every black person as a must read.
With that said, let me tell you about some of my issues with it. I'm not the type of guy who favors the 'racism is the reason for black failure' argument. But this is something that he has at the top of his solution list for many of the community's problems. He puts reducing racism and creating more equality at the top of his solution list for a number of different problems. I say it's as good as it's going to get. Many of us are succeeding, and even though it would be nice to get more equality, we're probably not going to get it, so deal with it. Yes, if we were treated as equal to whites from the start, we would not have our current issues of disproportionate poverty, poor health, and crime. But, there are too many black people succeeding in today's world for me to believe that racism can continue to prevent any of us from doing the minimum: Graduate from high school, don't commit crimes, and raise your children to be productive members of society. Personal responsibility for our own successes and failures as well as those of our children is what is going to elevate those blacks still lagging behind out of poverty and distress.
My next issue is probably more a product of my own pessimism/realism, but I felt like I needed to say it as long as I have the audience. Mr Kunjufu has the idea of trying to repair the entire community through stimulating an African American network of businesses and commerce, enhancing our own sense of nationalism, while simultaneously eradicating our more self destructive cultural tendencies. I believe that none of this will ever happen. Nothing wrong with him writing it, nothing wrong with trying to put it in motion. After all, we should all shoot for something.. but it's not going to happen. We are what we are. And what is black culture anyway? Who knows? Too many people believe that it is whatever BET says it is, or whatever our lower income bretheren have made it out to be.
Anyway, let me end this rant with this. As blacks I think a problem is that we see ourselves as individuals. Individuals who do the same things, live in the same places, and make the same mistakes. But, we don't see ourselves as a nation. Although this isn't ideal, we can use this to guide our strategy for improvement. Focus on teaching each individual to be their best, to value their education, to respect others, etc. (you know, the way parents often do with children)and we will be on the way to a better future.
This Book provides guidance and solutions..........2004-08-24
Jawanza has laid it on the line, He has offered real world solutions for the problems plaguing our (the Black) community. He forces us to think and reconsider simply debating and discussing the problems. Most notable is when he articulates why we can not agree on what solutions should be used for our various problems and when we should offer those solutions. Brother Jawanaza writes we should never offer a solution until we agree on what the cause of the problem is. If we differ as to what we think is the cause of the problem we will be unable to come to a consensus as to what is the best solutions for the Problem. I recommend every thinking Black man and woman read this book if you are truly interested in reading about real world solutions to the problems plaguing the Black community.
Every Black person in America should read this book!.......2004-05-20
It's a shame that Jawanza Kunjufu does not get more attention for his writings. His books are so powerful they make you want to take on the entire world all by yourself. His formula of Problem - Cause - Solution - Implementation is revolutionary. Every Black person in America should read this book. Who would've thought that we could purchase the answers to our struggles for only $16.
solutions.......2004-04-17
I was tired of hearing about Black people complain about the problems. This book gave me over 100 solutions and stategies.

I have a collection of five of the Debbie Travis books - this is one (Debbie Travis Facelift) that I really did not enjoy compared to the others by Debbie Travis.
This was not a very good "How to do" book - instead it only shows end results and most of the rooms shown are limited to a very eclectic or modern style of decorating. My other 4 Debbie travis books show a wide range of styles that basically can appeal to everyone and they show a variety of painting styles and decorating. For me two far more useful Debbie Travis books are Decorating Solutions which was really wonderful, and Painted House which I think is fabulous.
Great Companion Guide to her Decorating Show.......2005-12-23
This book is a good companion guide to Debbie's FaceLift show. It focuses on several of her facelift projects and includes tips and a few step-by-steps for projects. Where this book excels are the photographs of the rooms, her color choices and combinations and the "before" and "after" pictures.
The first 15 or so pages contains basic info and an intro to her Facelift team. A lot of the time it is difficult to see the before pictures because they are so small, but the main part of the book, her creations, are beautiful. Most of the designs have a contemporary, modern feel. Debbie has a great way of combining function, color and classy styling to her designs.
I think my favorite part of the books are her color choices. So many of them I would never have considered but she shows how you can select a bright yellow or a subdued steel blue and make it beautiful. The best part is that most of the projects seem "doable" without expending huge outlays of time and effort (unlike some of her Painted House books).
Before-and-after renovation pictures accompany step-by-step project hints and plenty of tips.......2005-10-10
Maybe you're renovating your house: take a look at Debbie Travis and Barbara Dingle's Facelift: Solutions To Revitalize Your Home it focuses on innovative solutions for decorating problems to turn dark or dull rooms into lively or restive retreats. Mood-inspired sections advocate choosing color schemes which work: before-and-after renovation pictures accompany step-by-step project hints and plenty of tips.

Color Therapy at Home presents an imaginative investigation into the subtle yet powerful effects of color in our everyday lives. Mark McCauley, an accomplished interior designer, explains why we associate certain emotional, physical, or intellectual traits with reds, yellows, greens, or blues. Blues, for example, provide feelings of restoration and clarity. Reds, on the other hand, lend an active, dynamic energy to a room. Dozens of dramatic photos illustrate how colors work alone and in combination to achieve desired effects. A clear vase of vibrant red cherries, for example, forms a witty complement to a wall painted a nurturing pale green. McCauley's writing is extremely associative, as when he asserts that "brown is the homburg hat of life. It is the furtive sip from the little brown jug that provides momentary warmth on cold winter afternoons."
Practical designer tips, such as how to test your color choices, tint ceilings, or dress your interiors in colors you love to wear, enhance the inspiring photographs and engaging text. The book closes with a chart of 264 traits one may wish to increase in one's life--such as healing, trusting, or understanding--then keys each trait to specific colors. For anyone planning to redesign an entire home or simply repaint the kitchen pantry, Color Therapy at Home is provocative guide to color's profound effects on our interior well-being. --Mary Ribesky

Customer Reviews:
Great for Design, Poor for Chromotherapy.......2007-04-12
It is nice that the design industry has begun to look into spiritual healing therapies such as Chromotherapy. I have reviewed the color choices, however, and find they do not always match up with the truest teachings of Chromotherapy. So, if you are looking for a great design book that helps people associate their moods with color, this is nice. If you are truly wanting to trigger the brain's release of certain chemicals, you will need to find a hard core book on Chromotherapy.
Inspiring.......2005-08-09
As a design and decorating editor, I've found Color Therapy at Home to be a great resource. both at home and at work. The photos and text are inspiring and informative. I have a library of books on color, and this is the one I turn to again and again.
Color Choice Quiz seperates this book from the pack.......2002-12-14
Pluses:
The photographs in this book are great. As you might imagine with a book by this title there is a bold use of color. The style is modern, but will probably stand the test of time. I like the way the book is sectioned into chapters that fit a particular mood you might want to create (e.g. colors for fantasy). Also, there are general decorating tips scattered throughout the book.
Bonus:
The color choice quiz. Listed from A-Z all the emotions/moods you could ask for. You choose which emotions/moods you want to promote in a room. Then, you look at the color choice key to see which color matches those emotions/moods.
Minuses:
After buying the book and looking at it more carefully, I realized something...it has some of the same pictures as a book which I also own titled Color Healing Home by Katherine Sorrell. For example, check out pg. 27 of Color Healing and pg.63 of Color Therapy.
How to differentiate between the two: Color Therapy focuses more on how to promote moods. It lists moods and tells you what colors enhance that mood. Color Healing Home gives you more choices of color hue. They have a page for each hue and then tell you what moods each of these hues promote. You say tomatoe and I say tomato. I decided to keep both books, but I am a color junkie.
Recommendation:
What makes Color Therapy standout is the color choice quiz. If that is something that interests you, I would recommend this book. Otherwise, it is a coin toss between Color Therapy and Color Healing, and other books with bold uses of color.
color therapy.......2002-03-01
I thought this was a very good book
Disappointing.......2001-09-19
I had hoped for more. The title sounded so intriguing. But what I got was nothing new. I have other decorating books (and magazine articles) that cover the same ground. Tips such as using your wardrobe as a guide to colors you want to live with are old clichés and don't always apply. (I wear only neutrals yet have a colorful house.)
