3 out of 5 stars The Irony of Estimating..........2007-03-22

Yes this book contains just about every material involved in building a structure and has many formulas to figure out anything you could possibly imagine, from materials to labor. The downfall is in the review questions and exercises dealing with the provided blueprints, which are very vague and difficult to interpret, thus making any of your estimating practice next to useless. There's got to be a better book out there...

5 out of 5 stars Great deal.......2007-02-10

Excellent condition, great price and arrived just in time as promised. Great deal compared with my university's bookstore.

Book Description

With its emphasis on showing how each unit cost is arrived at, Walker's Building Estimator's Reference Book is the reference of choice for construction professionals seeking to customize estimates unique to their project. For this, it remains one of the leading texts in the curricula of U.S. construction schools, as well as required reference in states that issue contractors licenses based on competency exams.

Walker's 27th Edition is expanded and revised, providing the authoritative cost information on which builders have depended for over 87 years.

Among features of the 27th Edition are new sections on Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF), Shotcrete applications and electrical busway

Walker's 27th Edition also includes revised charts for concrete reinforcing steel

Completely updated directory of building construction-related associations and organization with their website URLs

New and expanded section for data on plywood roof decking and sheathing to cover specific roof types-hip, gable, etc.

Plus, much more:

The 27th Edition contains hundreds of specific revisions and changes to key data and information in the book. Many of these changes were made on the recommendation of building industry professionals who are the book's users.

The 27th Edition covers these key topics: Construction Techniques and methods; Material Quantities Required; Types of Material; Manhours/Productivity Rates; Current Labor Costs; Application Rates.

Plus, Walker's contains Metric equivalents for all quantities, so you can be in compliance with federal contracts.

Considered the "bible" of estimating for the past 85 years, Walker's is a ''how to estimate'' book, not simply a unit price book. In other words it demonstrates how to work up a price so you can make adjustments as needed.

Walker's costing comes from years of experience in construction and is monitored by people who make their livelihood in estimating, specifically Jerrold Ratner, CPE, CCA and William Spradlin, Jr., CPE.

Walker's is tailored to all - beginners who want to understand estimating, the experienced estimator who needs some back-up on crew sizes and production as well as all in between, that is: Tradesmen, Contractors, Homeowners, Educators, Engineers, Architects, Construction Managers, Insurance Adjusters, Bonding Companies, and Lawyers.

Updated continuously since 1915, this hands-on manual's chapters are organized by CSI Division, covering updated construction methods, material and labor costs, labor productivity (man-hours), construction finance, scheduling, construction management, bidding, negotiating contracts, value engineering, types of cost estimates, overhead, insurance, profit, change orders, and more. In fact, it has been said that the book is like an entire construction library in one volume. This level of substance and expertise that makes ''Walker's Building Estimator's Reference Book'' a standard in the curriculum of dozens of universities' construction programs and a oft-quoted source in court disputes.

Each chapter discusses in detail cost estimating methods in the areas of masonry, concrete, metals, carpentry, site work, thermal and moisture protection, windows and doors, finishes, mechanical, electrical, road and highway construction, and more.

Used in hundreds of universities' construction estimating classes, including Texas A & M, Nebraska, Purdue, Florida and Washington State. Mandated reference for the State of Florida General License Examination, in addition to 16 states which license contractors on the basis of competency exams.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2005-03-11

It's a great reference book for new and seasoned estimators. We were looking for a "how-to" book that gives insight to productivity as well as material costs. If applicable, well worth the investment to purchase one for every estimator in your office.

5 out of 5 stars The Estimator's "Bible".......2003-04-21

I've been using Walker's for over 30 years, and it has never failed me. I recommend it to anyone who wants to estimate.

There are plenty of programs and books for estimating, but when you get right down to it there's only one Walker's -- an authoritative reference that shows you how to work up your own costs.

The estimating guides I've seen amount to little more than unit cost catalogs. With a cost data book, you wind up with someone else's estimate for someone else's job. This book is much more thorough. It's a "how-to" approach. You can do custom bids that cost out the job you are faced with, with real accuracy, and allow yourself flexibility and control.

Good Book with Clear Illustration of Estimation & Bidding for Residential Projects

4 out of 5 stars A Seasoned Veteran.......2002-09-05

When I started contracting nearly 30 years ago this book was quite useful in moving me from trades person to business person, the required move to be successful. It's still here and just as good for introducing the basics of construction contracting.

5 out of 5 stars A must for construction specialists and tradesmen.......2000-09-16

This is vol 1 of a 2-vol work that takes the guess work out of estimating, designing, and planning a construction project. Whether building as a tradesman or contractor--or even as someone such as a homeowner wishing to contract the building of his house, this book is a must. I have been in the construction business for years and these two books are a must in my office and in my truck. I require all my key personnel to study them, a policy that saves money, time, and eliminates guesswork. On a scale of 1-10, I rate both a 10!

5 out of 5 stars Instructions from a professional builder.......2000-09-16

This book gets to the point with the basics showing how to do a job in detail with clear, concise instructions and drawings showing details that ensures professional performance. A must for a builder or tradesman engaged in the construction trades. I wouldn't start a job without it and I've been in the construction business for a good man years.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for builders and owners........1999-10-27

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to build and contract their own home or for experianced builders who need a nononsense resource to contracting and home building. I have used this book and Vol 1 or many years and it has been nothing short of a time and money saver.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless collection of tables and drawings.......2007-04-01

I was hoping for a comprehensive step-by-step process with deep insights that should come from a company (RS Means) that is publishing other books in their 65th editions. Instead this books is merely a collection of tables like Installation time for chalk boards and dimensions of wide flange shapes.
Huge disappointment. I am certain that I will never use this book.

5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended specialized reference.......2007-10-06

In "Roofing Construction & Estimating", Dan Atcheson draws upon his many years of experience and expertise as a draftsman, as an apprentice in plumbing, electrical and carpenter, as a professional in all areas of construction from earthwork, to framing, to roofing. The result is an impressively 'user friendly' instructional compendium on roof sheathing, underlayment, asphalt shinglers, wood shingles and shakes, mineral-surfaced roll roofing, tile and slate roofing, metal roofing and siding, as well as built-up and elastomeric roofing. Profusely illustrated, enhanced with tables, charts, calculations, examples, step-by-step instruction and repair procedures, "Roofing Construction & Estimating" is ideal for novice or do-it-yourself roofer, and would make an invaluable reference for even the more experienced roofing contractor with respect to making a roofing estimate, installing or repairing roofing in residential or commercial buildings. A highly recommended specialized reference, "Roofing Construction & Estimating" should be a part of every professional, trade school, and community library Building Contractor or Architecture reference collection.

2 out of 5 stars The roofing book for those who have never been on a roof.......1999-09-23

This is an informative book that would be acceptable material for the person who has never been on a roof. He covers most roofing products in a adaquate manner explaining many of the basic princibles. However, as a roofer, it would have been nice to see what he considers acceptable manhours per square on each product, using his experiance, instead of using information drawn from other books.

4 out of 5 stars A contractors point of view........2006-03-26

This is a very complete compilation of cost data for commercial construction. The systems portion is very helpful for a quick estimation but the real value is in the wide variety of componets listed. This book will take awhile to learn to use for the new contractor but the investment in time is worth while.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2006-03-22

For anyone in the construction management field, this text is a well-known reference. Nothing can replace your own firm's historical productivity data and quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, but RS Means can give you a good idea of where an estimate begins. It is a great tool for architects and owners to calculate preliminary cost estimates for a wide range of products.

While being far from comprehensive, Cauldwell gives you enough information to get started, and with plenty of photo references-- good beginner's guide

1 out of 5 stars The positive reviews are too good to be true........2006-06-08

I purchased this book and found that I should have listened to the bad reviews written about this book before buying. The postive reviews are too good to be true - buyer beware. I agree with the comments of some of the bad reviews exactly:
"The author of this book needs to learn proper home inspection procedures before he sells himself as knowledgable. I have been inspecting homes for 19 years and often give lectures on the topic. After reading most of this book I realized what a waste of money it was because the information was incorrect or incomplete. I can't believe how many mistakes I found in this book. I'm glad I returned it for a refund on my money but not happy I wasted my time reading it!"

Don't wast your time reading it either!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for the beginning inspector or prospective home buyer.......2006-05-22

Rex Cauldwell has produced a clear, concise, well-written introduction to home inspection that should be easily read and understood by even those with no background in construction.

Not what I would consider a "bible" of inspection, but this book is an excellent place to start.

Highly recommended.
