Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hotels & Resorts.......2007-01-18

Good primer for anyone interested in development of their first hotel. Good schematics and good general information. Nice index. Useful for learning terminology, which makes negotiating with saavy designers and construction people a lot easier. Could stand to be updated.

5 out of 5 stars The (probably) Perfect book for the technical planning of any hotel........2006-12-09

This book includes all the technical and financial aspects of hotel design/planning. It is an essential book to have when designing any hotel as it contains all standard neccessities for all situations. It shows technical drawings and some info of many (successful) hotels around today. Including some financial statistics and images of these hotels, which are mainy the large hotel chains but also Low budget hotels. This is the most important info as we can learn the most from successful hotels and see why they are working.

Cons are that it is quite difficult to follow. Not clearly explaining what certain statistics are and it is not in a reader friendly format. The few black/white pictures are not important really... But this does not affect my rating of the book as it is not intended for actual learning, rather more 'knowing' essential technical aspects.

The book isn't what a lot of people see as design, aesthetics and visuals etc. It has nothing to do with interior decorating or contemporary design. Just to let you know if you dont already...

If you are or thinking to be a hotel designer/Architect or are in the hotel business, then this book is perfect. You need it to have a hotel that works.

      Book Description

The three New Jersey beach resorts known collectively as The Wildwoods have recently been the subject of widespread notice for their unique concentration of mid-century commercial architecture. Known in The Wildwoods as Doo Wop, the style is mostly represented in the resorts' surviving motels, built between 1955 and 1970, and comes in a variety of forms: Modern, with jet-age glass walls; Vroom!, with thrusting pointed features; and Polynesian Pop, with thatched roofs and tiki torches. This fun, colorful book recounts the stories of the motels, describes their special features--from glorious neon signs to ubiquitous plastic palm trees--and covers the recent Neo-Doo Wop buildings that have risen in the wake of Doo Wop preservation.

5 out of 5 stars Wildwood Crest Memories.......2007-08-26

If you were a kid in the 50's and 60's and spent your summer vacations in Wildwood Crest, NJ, you will love this book. It is chock full of pictures and stories of all the motels that lit up the summer nights with their creative and thematic neon signs. So, put on some Beach Boys or Four Tops music, and sit down with this delightful look back at one of the most colorful memories of your childhood or teen years. Thanks to Kirk Hastings for putting it together.

5 out of 5 stars Wild About This Book.......2007-02-04

You don't have to know Wildwood to love this book, but when you finish it
you'll want to go. Hastings does more than write about the history and
architecture of this unique place, he brings its heart and soul alive. This
wonderfully kitschy resort has a fanatically loyal following - people come back
year after year for decades, staying in places built in the 50's and 60's
with names like the Astronaut, the Kona Kai,the Bonanza, the Ebb Tide,
the Singapore or the Tahiti. Just driving down the street was a lesson in
pop culture. DOO WOP MOTELS is fun, informative and obviously written
by someone who loves Wildwood. Unfortunately it's also one of the only
places to see these architectual treasures, since many have been
torn down in recent years in the name of "progress." The photographs of the
motels are beautiful...you'll feel like you're there sipping a drink
under a plastic palm, the "official" tree of the Wildwoods.

          Book Description

For a long time, a stay in a well-designed hotel was a costly business. Architectural treats tended to be restricted to the luxury category. In recent years, however, some of these hotels have adjusted to meet the needs of a younger generation of travelers. The rooms are no longer ridiculously expensive, but still by no means cheap. The new book "best designed affordable hotels" has been published in response to the frequent request for an overview of reasonably priced design hotels. Illustrated with brilliant colour photos, the team of authors has put together the first global collection of first-class hotel architecture and fantastic residences with affordable room rates.

            Book Description

Grand Hotels is the fruit of the many years Elaine Denby has devoted to travels and visits throughout Europe, North America, the Near East and the Orient; it is a fascinating architectural and social history that covers the globe from the 1830s to the 1930s, but which also takes note of the most recent refurbishments. The styles of architecture and decor have varied enormously for grand hotels: a French Renaissance château manner for the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the 1880s; a fantastic Moorish-style confection for the Tampa Bay on Florida's Gulf Coast (1891); Art Deco for Oliver Hill's seaside Midland Grand at Morecombe in England (1933). And the services available were equally stunning: Turkish baths, rifle-ranges, even a fleet of vintage Rolls-Royces at Hong-Kong's Peninsula. To keep this illusory world glittering, the reality had to run like clockwork, with managers like César Ritz, king of hoteliers, monitoring every detail from ballrooms to basement boilers. Grand Hotels explores every aspect of this all-but-vanished world of opulence, from the entrepreneurs, architects and designers who made it possible to the ambitious individuals and dynasties that kept it going.

4 out of 5 stars Book review by Craig Davis.......2000-11-14

This book represents a good historic insight to hotels and their development in the worlds regions. As an hotel industry professional, I find the details of yesteryear a delight recorded in this well planned and illustrated volume. The book shows a slight bias toward the English tradition but as Elaine has clearly researched some of Englands older towns and cities, it is charming to see how grand the home market was. The selection of the international hotels misses many of those hotels that I would consider of the Grand genre but that gives Elaine a reason to write the next volume.
