5 out of 5 stars A Great Find!!!.......2007-08-26

I stumbled across this book while checking out at my local library. I have to say that this book was a great find! I got home w/ it and could not put it down. I immediately took out my notebook and made notes. Unfortunately I could only keep this book for two weeks, so I made a promise that I would buy it one day when I had the extra money. This book really inspires and teaches. Ms. Finney shows you how to build your wardrobe and even make your own products at home to pamper yourself. I signed up for her daily newsletter and even her fashion gab forum. I am on it everyday to soak up all of this fashionista's knowledge. As a treat, she even sent out invites to her fashion gab forum and after you completed so many posts, she sends you a copy of her book. I received mine today and it's signed also. This book will defintely be my go book and it stays in my tote bag when I am out shopping. Again, a great resource!!!

5 out of 5 stars great find.......2007-08-25

This guide is a concise, well written, informative and funny guide to the world of savvy shopping. It's particularly aimed at those of us who know very little about what's out there and how to get the best deal. The book is a quick read. The websites provided are awesome. I now have a crick in my neck from checking them out (and ordering from them!). I can't decide whether to share the wealth of information or keep it to myself! Have fun!

1 out of 5 stars If you like thrift and 2nd hand stores...........2007-08-24

I personally prefer to buy new clothes and not used. This book focused a lot on incorporating 2nd hand clothing. I'm so disappointed with this book, I plan on returning it!

5 out of 5 stars Love It! Great tips even for pro bargain shoppers.......2007-08-09

I just read this book, and I have to say, I've found my shopping soulmate! As a professional shopper who's shopping motto is "Don't buy it unless it's at least 90% off retail," I didn't expect to learn much from this book. After all, for the last 7 years, I've traveled the country in search of bargains to pass on to my ebay customers. I often hear salesclerks gasp in amazement as I buy a large bag full of designer items for under $100.
But this book goes way beyond the basics. Written in a straightforward, upbeat style that's fun to read, it covers the full spectrum of tips and tricks for buying a designer wardrobe for less.
My copy is now thoroughly dog-eared and underlined, and I'm ready to take my shopping to the next level. The Budget Fashionista offers amazing tips for scoring the best deals at outlets, online, at consignment shops and even at department stores. I love how she's so specific about when, where, and how to score the best deals. I learned about some new sources I hadn't considered, like DSW Shoe Warehouse, Loehmanns online, and sample sales.
The Personal Style quiz was a great tool for analyzing what I already have that I love, helping me focus on the pieces that really build my wardrobe. In the style of the "Look For Less" tv show, she even explains in detail how she helped a friend buy a full professional wardrobe for under $600. This book is so inspiring and fun to read, and I recommend it for anyone, from a novice to a professional, that wants to buy more great clothes for less money.

3 out of 5 stars The book is Okay..........2007-08-07

I read this book in about two days. It was a quick read and she has some good tips for budget shopping, but I don't appreciate all the stuff about consignment shops, pruchasing off ebay and trading clothes. I will not buy used clothing, who knows where it has been or who the previous owner was.

It's nice to find a good deal at an Saks Off Fifth or Nordstrom Rack, but if outlets and discount retailers are the only place to go then that doesn't work for me. I am not the type to go digging through every rack of clearance items hoping I find something. I do appreciate the insight on looking for certain things like basic tees from low-end retailers but the repeating references to Old Navy and Walmart is starting to get to me. Sales are always nice, but if you are in the average size range whether for shoes or clothes you will not find as many good deals as someone on either extremes. Not everything in the book is new, but it does give you insight to hear it/read it from someone else. Take what you need from the book, but don't follow all the guidelines religously.

2 out of 5 stars Never received - can't rate.......2007-09-27

Was a gift for my sister and future brother-in-law. Had it shipped to them, but it was never received. Sounds like a good book though.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a start.......2007-08-09

Friedrichsen's book is good to jump start ideas about having an interesting, frugal wedding. The best parts of her book are the profiles done of various couples, how they managed their small wedding, and how they broke down the budget. Especially well done are ideas that the couples used to save money.

The book may not be good for in depth wedding planning, but perhaps no book is good for that. We have turned to Wedding Planning for Dummies, among others, to help us with the details of ceremonies, contracts, etc.

If you're interested in a good introduction to frugal weddings, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars a big help.......2007-07-31

We were planning a wedding with 50 guests. Most other books are aimed for large weddings. I got the most use out of this book...it gave me good ideas and great online resources. Highly recommended if you are planning on a smaller wedding.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas in this book!.......2007-07-15

I loved this book! I purchased several wedding planning books; this one is hands down the best of the bunch! Tons of resources, tons of ideas. The real-life weddings shared in the book (complete with their budgets) was particularly helpful. Tons of resources in the back of the book too, complete with website addresses. I highly recommend this if you're planning a wedding!

5 out of 5 stars A good starter book when you dont have a clue.......2007-02-16

I brought this book based off of the reviews. I am planning a wedding and trying to keep it small. I thought that this book gave excellent resources and i thought the couples stories also gave great ideas. The breakdown of the expenses for each couples wedding also helped.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great designs.......2007-05-15

My mom thought they were too bright, but if you like a clean more modern look, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good ideas and projects.......2006-05-18

The book showcases some of the ideas from the show - with pictures, explanations and instructions for some projects. I also have "6 Steps to Design on a Dime" and I like it better - more useful info and nicer pictures.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Show.......2006-04-07

After watching the show, I eagerly grabbed the book. Flipping past the designers' bios, I gazed in dismay at the uninspiring photos. Somehow the rooms look less on paper. Less high style, less creative, less appealing...
Maybe seeing the dismal "before" room on TV, and watching the team transform it, grabs the viewer. On paper, it is too static with the views too limited to excite.
Still there are some useful do-it-yourself projects such as making a padded storage cube. The room arranging kit, consisting of graph paper and some furniture shapes to cut out and arrange is pretty ho-hum.

4 out of 5 stars Decent decorating book.......2006-03-28

I've looked at many, many home decorating books lately. This is the only book where the basic house and furniture looks like the mix-matched hand-me-down stuff I have. Going on a shopping trip to France for antique furniture is just not an option for me. I appreciated the everyday practical approach to design and decorating. Some of the designs are not my style but I found a lot of inspiration. I do wish the book was a little more detailed in the before and after pictures.

2 out of 5 stars Very Few Inspirational Ideas.......2006-01-27

I checked this out of the library, hoping I would find some inspirational ideas. I was disappointed. When Design on a Dime first premiered on TV, I tended to only like 2 out of 10 of their designs. I have noticed over the past year, the designs have improved tremendously.

I enjoy home decorating projects and like sewing, upholstery and doing any type of project where I get to work with my hands. I believe that you don't have to spend gobs of money to have a beautiful environment that reflects your style. Knowing that many of these rooms were created on a $1000 budget, I expected more. The photography is not even very good. Many of the rooms look somewhat washed out and lack detail, as if taken with a lower resolution.

The "tips?" were so general that I did not find them helpful. The info is more like what you already know. There was a paragraph titled "Enliven with Fabric", the tip was "Extra doses of color enter the room through fabric on the chairs." It then described the fabric on the chairs, but nothing useful about fabric selection or why the colors were chosen. The worst part of the book was a lack of instructions for many of the projects shown. For example, on page 13 there is a caption for picture B that says "Summer prepares to complete a 1950's atomic-style light fixture." Where are the instructions?! Nothing! Why is there a picture of someone building something if there are no instructions or buying resources if it can be purchased (it is not in the Credit/Resources section in the back of the book).

This book needs work.

If you love chandeliers, flowing draperies, and bric-a-brac--if you believe you were a Roman senator, a Gothic queen, or Madame de Pompadour in an earlier life or have fantasies of La Belle Époque or the Golden Age of Hollywood--The Paris Apartment is the decorating book for you. Claudia Strasser includes before-and-after pictures of real people's apartments, transformed from dark cracker boxes to intriguing showplaces. She gives shopping tips on finding the best furniture, how-to instructions on distressing and painting your flea-market finds, and ideas for choosing the period and colors that best suit your personality. Best of all, Strasser estimates the average cost of a no-holds-barred transformation to be $1,800 for an entire apartment, including furniture--less if you already have the furniture, are clever with your hands, are somewhat restrained in your taste, or live near the best flea markets. The Paris Apartment is the perfect combination of inspiration and instruction for budget-conscious glamour mavens on a budget.

Book Description

The Paris Apartment is a popular shop in New York's East Village, where visitors can step back in time and immerse themselves in the beauty and romance of antique furnishings. Reflecting an unusual mix of design influences (Baroque, rococo, neoclassical and Art Deco) and personal taste, its style is luxurious, playful, and wholly original.

In The Paris Apartment, Claudia Strasser, the founder and owner of the shop, offers readers the quintessential guide to achieving this romantic Parisian look without having to spend a fortune. With easy-to-follow instructions and helpful advice, she shows readers how they can transform their homes into a living environment that reflects both their personal style and timeless French elegance. Laid out in the form of an entertaining diary, the book helps Francophiles define their fantasy home, find inspiration, select a color palette and use light creatively. She also includes instructions for making canopies and valances; advice on dyeing fabrics and restyling furniture; tips on budgeting; guidance on shopping at flea markets and auctions; and a glossary of terms. Color photographs throughout illustrate the ideas and techniques shown in the book.

As interest in the home experiences a resurgence, and as Americans become more careful about their spending, nesting has become the pastime of the '90s. People want luxury homes without spending a fortune. With its unbeatable combination of style and solid practicality, The Paris Apartment  is a home-decorating guide to treasure and draw inspiration from for many years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Of no value.......2007-04-03

This book has no interest for someone interested in decorating. Very boring, not enough photos. A real vanity book.

2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-03-31

this has been on my want list for a year or more, and I finally found a copy at my library. I am SO glad I didn't buy this. It is way, way too overdone for my taste, and in no way does it reflect any element of french style that I've seen. I'd consider myself a francophile, but even Versailles looks restrained in comparison to Strasser's layers upon layers upon layers. I'd hate to clean in any of these rooms. There are some good ideas, like the rinceau treatment of the warehouse room turned parlor, but they were largely hidden under swaths of satin and clutter. I'd hoped for more depictions of true french designs.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it! Don't Miss the Best Tip..........2007-01-19

I loved this book and have shared my copy more than I can remember so now I just purchase them for my good girlfriends. Beyond the practical 'how tos'' for any budget, I love the greater message that Ms. Stasser reveals. Each of us can create a beautiful, decadent, relaxing area for ourselves. I chose my bathroom tub(I did the beading), a freestanding vanity (that I ventured to the flea market for!) and a private telephone area for just me with an old fahioned telephone table and comfy chair and cuddly chenille throw. Each area has a few very beautiful trickets, smells great and has lush fabrics. My kids prohibit the truly frenchie from existing anywhere else. But, I bought some french cds and the kids listen to them in the car! I LOVE my spaces - they are transcenant - truly. I have my piece of The Paris Apartment.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this book.......2007-01-14

The photos in this book are artistic, but not informative or helpful. Lots of text on basic design pricipals--so no new information. Basic pictures--and more of them--would have saved this book.

NOT AT ALL WHAT I EXPECTED. THE WEBSITE IS MORE INFORMATIVE THAN THE BOOK. I VISITED THE BOUTIQUE AND HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE. EVERYTHING IN THERE IS BEAUTIFUL. HIGHLY RECOMMEND A VISIT BUT THE BOOK IS A TERRIBLE WASTE OF MONEY.

Book Description

First came indie rock bands and indie movies. Now, thanks to Jessica Vitkus, the indie movement has reached the world of crafts, where traditional techniques such as knitting, mosaic, embroidery, metalwork, sewing, and collage are being used in brave new ways.

With an emphasis on recycling, improvising, and making things from scratch, AlternaCrafts offers more than 20 projects that provide this newest generation of crafters with the skills they need for the self-expression they crave. Whether they want to turn their beat-up T-shirts into a shaggy rug, an old sweater into a cozy hat, yesterday's newspaper into a bouquet of flowers, or their jeans into a new skirt or bag, this exciting book tells them how to make the transformations with a minimal amount of money and no experience whatsoever. Smartly priced and boldly designed to attract teenagers and twentysomethings, this book will also appeal to older crafters seeking newfangled twists on their favorite pastimes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book was amazing!.......2006-11-14

If you're crafty, sometimes you get in a funk and can't think of things to make. This book will get you started on some new ideas. I had seen the shaggy dog rug in another book, but I liked this one even better. I didn't use it for my dog, but even better: a bath mat! It took a long time, but it was easy, and I get compliments on it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Has provided me many hours of crafting goodness!.......2006-08-27

The projects here are varied and so great (the curtains made from bandanas? Love!), there are color photos on practically every page, the directions are clear, and it is spiral-bound--this is such a plus with craft books.

All in all, this is probably my favorite craft book that I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Great Crafts Book for Everyone.......2006-08-11

*****
If you are interested in expensive, creative, easy, explicitly intructed craft ideas, you'll love this book. I am not a "crafter", yet I could follow the instructions for these projects easily. Most important of all, the supplies are "found" objects, things you have around the house anyway, for the most part, and you don't need to spend a lot of money buying supplies.

This book would be great for all ages, especially teens and young adults. However, I am middle-aged and loved it! It is rather elementary, but I needed that. Great value!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-05-30

This book is great!!! I'm not very crafty, but when I saw this book, I though, why not? The projects are cool and the directions are clear and easy. Most craft books are either super dorky or super snotty, but this book rules. It's cool and really accessible to every level of crafter. A lot of people will get this book as a gift this year from me. Nice work :)

5 out of 5 stars Book is for band directors but ensemble members will gain insight........2007-01-13

Another book with a great concept: include a DVD which shows what's inside the book. Here Dr. Willie Hill is shown in a clinic type format demonstrating to high school jazz band participants how to play jazz standards. The DVD is a documentary format of a live classroom setting of real students being taught how to solo. Dr. Hill also instructs the 4-piece rhythm section, telling the musicians to listen to the drummer's accents. Both a high school ensemble and a college ensemble are represented. This book also ties in with a great video set that shows the role of the drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards in the rhythm section called "Drums In the Rhythm Section" (also Piano, Bass, Guitar) with top caliber players like Steve Houghton.

The book does a good job of presenting jazz in a methodical way. It starts with jazz history and influential players. It then moves on to the development of jazz instrumentation and jazz styles. As to not overwhelm the novice, a blues tunes, "Billie's Bounce", is used as a starting point. Helpful pointers like scales, modes, and arpeggios are explained and written out. Since classical musicians will only be familiar with standard grand staff notation and unfamiliar with simplified jazz charts, time is taken to explain the anatomy of a chart. The book's expensive but one you'll keep in the library for reference, especially if you plan on being a jazz band director. Also, as a supplemental addition, get "Approaching The Standards" by the same author to practice what you've learned here.

Jazz Pedagogy: The Jazz Educator's Handbook and Resource Guide

Great ideas for someone on a tight budget. I bought this and gave it to my cousin who is going to college. Perfect gift for the graduate... great ideas for dorms/first apartments! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read and easy-to-use.......2006-06-26

I loved the book! There are lots of good tips and pointers, and for people like me who don't know how to do some home projects, the instructions were easy to follow and easy to use.

I ended up buying 3 copies - one for me and two to give away to friends! Totally encourage you to check this out.

5 out of 5 stars The only problem is she didn't write it 12 years ago!.......2006-06-15

This is the book I wish I'd had when I was just starting out on my own, and the book I wish I'd thought to write after moving house about 10 times since I first started college!
Yee-Fan does a great job of fitting all kinds of information into this book, and speaks in a voice that is easy to read but not patronizing to first-time renters. She's been there, done that, and wants to pass all that she's learned, good and bad, on to you!
Everyone has lived in the white cardboard-box style apartment, and signed the lease that says "no painting, no restoration, no personality." This book has a TON of ways to get around all that and really make a rental your own. Once you read this book from cover to cover, you can satisfy your need for more by culling through countless articles on the website.
I'll be buying a copy for every person I know that moves out on their own.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent for budget-minded decorators!.......2006-05-09

First, let me start by saying that I thought there would be more pictures in this book. I'm very visual and that's usually what drives me to buy decorating books. But that alone did not distract me, and since it's mentioned numerous times in the book that the author is also the editor of Digsmagazine.com, I can pop in there to augment all the great information in this book.

Usually books about decorating, which is such a visual thing to begin with, have lots of pictures and very little text. If there is a lot of text in the book, it's usually pretty boring and hard to stay focused. Not so with this book. Yee-fan Sun's style of writing is very conversational and easy to read. The best part is that unlike other books on budget decorating or appealing to the newly free, she takes into consideration that many of us on a budget are renting and usually aren't allowed to make changes to our pads. Yee-fan provides plenty of easy, inexpensive, and temporary ways to inject personality into the cookie cutter apartments that we live in. Since she's lived all over the world on a starving student's budget, Yee-fan really knows what she's talking about.

It's a lot of reading, but if you want to give your place a huge dose of personality without blowing the budget, this is the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars look cool for cheap.......2006-02-12

Yee-fan really knows what she is talking about... too many style books offer great ideas, but their idea of a "budget" includes $200 pillows. Buy this book for amazing style on a realistic budget!

I absolutly loved this book. It has given me much direction for making my own movie. I never understood how to start, how to fund $$$ the movie, or where to find actors. Furthermore, it answers all the questions and fears I had. This books clearly explains what it takes to be the next Steven Spielberg or my favorite Quentin Tarantino. If you got the passion and the drive but need the direction GET AND STUDY THIS BOOK!!!

I didn't really know where to start to write my first movie. I received an email from Ken about his book. I wasn't sure about buying his book How To Make A Hollywood Movie For Under $800! His website helped me to understand how much I didn't know and so I ordered his book. I was very surprised when I started reading his book. It made me feel like I could really do this. He got me excited and I followed every step until my script was complete. Now I am half way through completing my film and I used his book like my film bible, and I keep it with me all the time. Great book, it really motivated me.

2 out of 5 stars Decorating with Dirty Shoes.......2006-03-18

I was looking for a book with inspirational pictures of rooms that would be accessible, clever and plenty of fodder for thought. THIS book has at least two pictures of dirty old shoes plopped on dirty tile or stacked onto an utilitarian steel rack as an example of "style." Style to whom? I don't want to decorate with shoes.

I have found books on decorating to be either stuck on some weird aesthetic -- like this book's fascination with putting everyday items on display in dirty or messy surroundings -- or to be too focused on architectural detail instead of the decorating itself. The reality is that my house is of new construction and looks frighteningly like other people's houses and it is almost devoid of the type of architectural detail lauded in such books. What am I supposed to do? Tear down a wall? That's not decorating to me, that's construction.

Sometimes these books can redeem themselves by offering interesting commentary that can spark good ideas, but, not in this case.

Do not waste your money unless you are interested in decorating with your worn out sneakers.

4 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorites...........2006-02-12

The book may appeal to someone with cheap tastes but for me to many of the examples were cluttered and to 'cute'. Or maybe I was simply looking for a book that had more style, or a book that would be more California or NYC friendly.

The initial photographs on each new chapter pages whet my appetite and made me assume that what would follow would be more of the same, but alas I would turn the page and be met with more cheap style ideas, if one can even use the word style. The books cover suggests a book that has style and a zen mode, but is far from either for me. The majority of rooms in the photographs in the book are more cluttered and cute.

Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, award-winning author of This is the Place

It is my belief that this book would be most useful for those decorating a first apartment, a loft, a very small house, or a second home but certainly this book will spark anyone's imagination.

The authors offer ideas won't bust a budget for fabrics, window treatments, storage, flooring and other materials for the home. They include suggestions for finding treasures in unlikely places and making do with inexpensive materials from places like Pottery Barn, Pier One Imports and flea markets. Resources such as these are included, and picture credits are given.

All in all, Style on a Budget will not disappoint.
