5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-10-05

The first thing I learned from this book is that I'm NOT ready to start my own faux/mural painting business!! This book is chuck full of information from someone that has been there. The author really explains scenarios well, and prepares you for, from what I can tell, every situation. In the back of the book she provides sample forms, and check lists, etc. I really feel that this is a true gift for anyone interested in this field. Even people that have been doing it for a few years might get some good tips here. Great job!

Aimed at professionals and dedicated amateurs, The Art of Faux is packed with gorgeous examples of faux finishes. Internationally acclaimed, award-winning decorative painter and instructor Pierre Finkelstein covers every aspect of the art form in tremendous detail, beginning with extensive specifics on all tools, materials, supplies, and planning, and including preparation and cleanup considerations. Each of the other 10 chapters concentrates on a wide variety of faux finishes in different categories: marble, semiprecious stone, limestone and sandstone, wood, patinas and textures, metals and gilding, tile, organic materials (such as ivory, leather, and mother-of-pearl), stenciling, and trompe l'oeil. There are even instructions for uncommon faux finishes, such as bamboo, Delft tile, snakeskin, and damask, that are not generally taught in other books on the subject. Every finish is presented as a complete recipe, and the list of ingredients includes not only paints, glazes, and tools, but also difficulty ratings and lists of preparatory exercises for techniques that are part of the complete finish. People seriously involved in any aspect of faux finishing--particularly people considering careers in the field--should invest in the information-packed The Art of Faux.

5 out of 5 stars Decorative Painted Finishes.......2007-02-06

Great resource book. Cool techniques...a bit intimidating for a beginner but full of information.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch presentation.......2006-08-11

This is not the next step for those who have been sponging and doing strié on the wall. This book outlines the top end of decorative finishing. These are difficult-to-master techniques and you should be a trained artist (realistic painter) before attempting much of what is described in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Very detailed, but not worth that much money........2006-06-15

I couldn't wait to get this one! It is very detailed. Teaches you step by step AND gives you the names of all colors used. The method to get to the end result is a bit tricky, the brushes he uses can get very expensive, and I think that there are other ways of getting the same result, without all the expensive brushes.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar! Stellar book! Stellar results!.......2006-02-23

This is a great book, and I highly recommend it. I have a few books on Faux finishing but they are no where near as complete, and with the others the results can be considered questionable, or shoddy compared to this one. The teachings in this book will astound you. Everything is pictured step by step. You will learn to achieve complete, and believable transformations. There are also some great examples pictured of finished interiors that will inspire you to create.
If your looking for a book on creating fantastic Faux finishes look no further - I assure you this is one to get.

Sharon Ross & Else Kinkead's Decorative Painting & Faux Finishes could have been featured in our 'homeowner's helpers' section but deserves mention here for its special attraction to crafters who enjoy working with paint. Over 300 color photos offer plenty of tips on how to work with different types of paint, color schemes, and how to prepare surfaces. Different methods, from ragging to antique and basic stippling and creating a parchment effect using newsprint, are covered in plenty of detail.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-10-14

This is a good book for us novices on how to do all those special effect finishes.

5 out of 5 stars Home decoration bible.......2007-07-26

Even an idiot like me managed to produce flawless faux finishes thanks to the step-by-step guides for the various types of surfaces. Never redecorate your home without consulting this book first.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-06

There isn't much to dislike about this book. It certainly offers a myriad of faux finishes...good step by step photos & quite honestly...the details are some of the best out there. I like the photographs included for each method demonstrated ...they were REALISTIC...which you don't always find in books like these. Although not formally rated...it was obvious if one read each explanation whether the application would be difficult or not...some were apparent just by studying the photos. This is most helpful for faux finishers of all skill levels...as well as those more adventurous who are wanting to break new ground. I have often been disappointed by Sunset books in other segments...but they really put a feather in their cap on this book...highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars MAKES DECORATING LOOK EASY.......2007-01-04

This is a great book to just venture through and marvel at all the wall coverings that are potential art projects. It is not for the amateur with little talent but for one who truly wants to venture into making a wall a spectatucular work of art. I read it with the anticipation of changing my house walls but one has to have money to buy the necessary supplies and also have some sense of an artistic outcome. There are so many possibilities and I recommend this book to open up your horizons.

4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2003-11-05

Definately a useful book, but it missed some of the subleties of doing faux techniques, such as how to soften some of the looks by going over the glaze by rubbing out a second time with a paint soaked rag (rubbing out technique). I completely remodeled a room and finished it with the rubbing out technique and I really enjoy the look.

I also would suggest getting the Behr Faux Techniques dual CD-rom set. I picked one up at my local Home Depot, and it was amazing the differences in techniques, but by using both resources, I found a method and a look that suited me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great easy-to-create projects, neat effects.......2001-04-30

This is a great book for the decorative artist. The effects you can achieve are both stunning and easy to create. They give a unique look to any project.

The book starts out with an overview of wide color shaper types and basic strokes as well as instructions for preparing and finishing surfaces. Then it shows you how to create faux stone, faux wood, fabric looks and fantasy textures. Some projects include a malachite chest, marble table, blue patterned cupboard, kilim floorcloth, damask roller blind and ceramic tile trivet.

Further pattern recipes are in the back. Some of these include lapis lazuli, woven plaid and wavy cross-band design. The instructions for everything are excellent, demonstrated step-by-step with photos. Most projects use latex paints, glazing liquid and a water-base varnish and include a complete materials list.

My only wish for the book was a suppliers list. Wide color shapers can be difficult to find. Buy this book with the color shaper included if you can.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the beginner.......2005-07-31

I compared this book to several others. It is the best for several reasons. First, it has an introduction with basic techniques and tools. The tool section has actual pictures of every tool you may need. This helps when going out to buy your supplies. Second, the has excellent step-by-step instructions for every technique. Third, the techniques covered range from simple to moderate, but all seem do-able. Other texts have fancier effects and styles, but are probably out of the skill range of the beginner.

Overall, this book makes faux finishing seem like a thing you can do and gives you the knowledge you need to do it.

Later you can move to the more complex techniques. However, you may not need to.

5 out of 5 stars 37 quick and easy latex painting techniques.......2004-10-07

Faux and Decorative Painting is a no-nonsense guide to beautifully coloring one's walls with water-based painting and glazing. Full color photographs and step-by-step instructions demonstrate 37 quick and easy latex painting techniques, from simple solid colors to designing petroglyph wall stencils. A superbly enjoyable home improvement resource, as fun to page through as it is to pick out follow project ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the serious/professional finisher.......2002-10-26

This is not a beginner book. However it is perfect for the professional finisher - especially if you take an interest in historic paints and techniques. There are many excellent recepies for historic paints, including calcamine. For the serious decorative painter this book is top notch.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond the Basic Craft.......2000-09-06

Although this book might not be the choice of a first-time faux painter, it is invaluable if you want the secrets to a classy, authentic paint job. Classic Paints & Faux Finishes has unlocked the mystery of the strange paint on my 1850's ceilings and why no other paint will stick to it; has authentic alternatives for treating plaster walls without resorting to inappropriate "plastic" paints and it provides simple recipes to create beautiful historic paints that are otherwise nearly impossible to acquire. The color and pigment charts are also very helpful. This is an excellent and inspiring reference book that should join your library when you wish to preserve the integrity of the past or when you cross the line from craft to art.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner.......2000-06-03

This book shows beautiful faux finishes, but goes more into the natural and/or elaborate elements needed to attain the beautiful finish. It doesn't teach the beginner or home decorator the basic steps needed to attain the wonderful results. I am no closer to a beautiful faux finish in my livingroom than I was before purchasing this book.

3 out of 5 stars Geared more toward the professional painter........1999-10-18

Very informative on the history of painting and the chemicals and processes used. However for the average person, most of the paint, tools and chemicals are not common and are hard to come by. It's not for the person that is looking for step-by-step projects either.

1 out of 5 stars Faux for DOH!.......2004-01-04

If you are someone who isn't looking to necesarily start your own business, but rather, have a hobby you charge for on the side then this book is right for you. It won't, however, give insight on how to conduct yourself in a professional business manner, how to deal with clients, what business practices are necesary with regards to paperwork, etc., or how to go about advertising successfully.

1 out of 5 stars Faux For Dough.......2003-12-27

I thought the book was definitely not geared for a professional faux finisher. It was way too general in nature to really help someone start a faux finishing business. It needs more specific information on business aspects. Most of the information given in the book was just common sense & did not warrant the purchase of this book. There are other books on the market that do a much better job of giving one the in depth information needed to start their own painting business. This book was, sadly, a big disappointment.

2 out of 5 stars Skims the Surface.......2003-06-06

I felt the book touched on the basics but never really gave me anything to start my own business. Many of the pages were filled with large photograhphs instead of in-depth knowledge. I was hoping for a book that would tell it all so that I could go out and begin a faux painting business...with confidence. Not impressed.
