Mitford cooks.......2007-10-08
I truly enjoy buying cookbooks, more for the stories and the history than for the actual recipe. This book is very entertaining. I simply had to re-read the entire series again, to re-aquaint myself with the characters that contributed the recipies. I spent one entire day reading the cookbook. Have made two of the recipes so far.
The presentation of story then recipe is a terrific idea, the family photo album at the back of the book is wonderful.
To be honest, the review I read did not tell me if the Orange-Marmalade cake recipe was in the book or not. I bought it in the high hopes that it was. Very happy to read her story about that particular recipe. Great book for reading even if you do not bake or cook.
This makes Mitford come alive in a brand new way.
I'm writting a family history cookbook, her cookbook gave me some great presentation ideas. It never crossed my mind that I should include pictures of the food on family heriloom china.
MITFORD COOKBOOK - A DELIGHTFUL RECIPE.......2007-09-28
This cookbook is a wonderful addition to the other Mitford books by Jan Karon. With over 150 recipes taken from all of the books it brings back the charm and memories of the stories. The puns, and side bar remarks are precious and it is a delight to read and reread. The recipes are very good too. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It makes a great gift for Christmas.
Jan Karon's Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader: Recipes from Mitford Cooks, Favorite Tales from Mitford Books (Mitford).......2007-09-24
Jan Karon's Mitford Coodbook and Kitchen Reader combines good cooking with a visit to the delightful "town" of Mitford. The book includes dishes by some of the best cooks in town and serves up a delicious compilation of recipies, feeding the body and warming the soul.
Mitford Cookbook.......2007-08-14
Orange Marmalade cake was awesome. It was a lot of work but my sister-in-law made it for my birthday and it was wonderful!!!
Jan Karon's Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader.......2007-05-13
After reading several of the Mitford Books, this edition finalized the bond between me, the reader, and the characters who populated the pages. In reading the different volumes, the reader becomes aware of the place that food occupies in the daily lives of the characters. Many times I marveled at Karon's ability to incorporate the preparation of meals to the story line. I was often tempted to seek out the recipes mentioned in her stories. Now that I own the Cookbook I enjoy preparing and sharing some of the very dishes that are attributed to the wonderful characters filling the Mitford Books.
Book Description
Do-it-yourself home projects have become a national pastime, and nothing satisfies that urge more then creating built-ins. The fact that they are a permanent part of a house makes it more critical that they be done with as much skill and imagination as possible. That's where the New Built-Ins Idea Book comes in. Written by Sandor Nagyszalanczy, a former senior editor of Fine Woodworking magazine and an acknowledged expert in the field, this illustrated guide shows step-by-step how to create built-ins that are both practical and appealing. Here are hundreds of design ideas for projects for every room of the house, including kitchens, bathrooms, libraries, kids' spaces, dining rooms, bedrooms, and the increasingly popular media spaces. The book shows a wide range of possibilities for incorporating built-ins, from niches to bookcases to spaces that replace those stacks of clothing in the closet. Complete coverage of materials, lighting, color, and hardware, along with careful, comprehensible drawings and photographs, is included.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected ..........2007-01-29
Taunton has a very good reputation for their publications so I thought this would be a great book to help me with several projects I will be undertaking. It was a disappointment. There was nothing innovative or unique about the ideas presented. The cabinet styles were either very basic or so custom they did not provide realistic options. If you are looking for innovative or creative ideas for a realistic cabinet project ... look elsewhere.
Fell short.......2006-10-30
I felt the sample of this book was not a good indication of it's contents. Most of the built-ins shown in the book are from a Room-View with the built in partially obstructed and with little detail shown. I wasn't looking for plans to build, but I would have expected more. If you like the details level shown on the cover of the book, then this will be right up your alley, other wise, the book will probably fall short of your expectations.
Great ideas! .......2006-07-22
To make the most of our new home, I was looking for ideas for custom made cabinetry and other storage options.
Although the style of quite a few examples are not to my taste, I still got enough ideas and inspiration. Also a plus; the book gives you tips for matching built-ins to the rest of the room, to get a coordinated look.
My favourite chapters: Passages (great storage options to be found there!!) Window seats (you will see small window seats as well as really large ones) Workspaces (they show you practical workspaces even in tiny closets) and Utility Areas. In the kitchen chapter I liked the small details, like the pantry and appliance garage.

Great ideas.......2006-05-18
I want to install severeal built-ins in my older home, as space is limited. This book definitely gave me lots of ideas. The pictures are excellent and really provide inspiration - whether you copy exactly or adapt the ideas to meet your needs. Full of ideas and inspiration - not a how-to.
Talk about IDEAS!.......2006-03-20
This book, by far, exceeded my expectations! It is full of wonderful photos - cover to cover. We are getting ready to build a new home and we will definitely use a few of these creative ideas.

A Landmark Design Book.......2005-11-10
This must be the first full book-length study of the increasingly popular subject of outdoor kitchens and cooking. The author's style is precise and easy, allowing the reader to understand the history of cooking outdoors, which, after all, is how cooking got started. The book is beautifully produced, with a profusion of color illustrations and drawings which illustrate the text's in-depth approach to all aspects of the subject. From simple outdoor grilling to the design and construction of a custom, high-end outdoor kitchen and dining area, the reader can develop a better feel for the glorious benefits of cooking by fire. A useful index of resources for products is included at the end.
Not to be ignored are the many sidebars in the book, many of which provide essential information, such as those relating to choosing grills, the estimation of food servings for groups, cleaning a grill and food safety when outdoors. Major chefs and designers who specialize in outdoor cooking and grilling are interviewed, including 'Barbeque Bible' maestro Steven Raichlen, Dwayne Ridgaway, Food Network star Paula Deen, Richard Sandoval (author of Modern Mexican Flavors) and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que owner John Stage.
We can't all afford to spend a fortune on a full-blown outdoor kitchen, but Amanda Lecky's book is a great resource for outdoor large and small, and is worth more than its weight in (gold or otherwise) briquettes. Outdoor cooking has never been so fully analyzed and featured and this book makes you want to run out on the patio, fight the fall chill and grill a great meal.

Organize and Plan for Your Kitchen or Bath Project.......1999-12-19
The major part of any project is being organized. And what better way to organize a kitchen or bath redesign than to practice effective time management skills? That's right: delegate to a professional who deals with this sort of undertaking every single day: a designer. Utilizing the skills of a talented kitchen or bath designer will decrease stress, improve productivity, and create more time for you to enjoy the task at hand: redesigning or remodeling the kitchen or bathroom in your home.
I'm a big fan of being prepared - that's what makes life fun. And the experts at Home Depot have compiled their favorite tips and techniques into one easy-to-use book. The book is well organized and very easy to use, which encourages us to keep it handy for quick references.
Whether you're creating a color scheme, choosing light design, wrestling with investment return issues, or wanting detailed information about the order of work done by contractors, this book is a goldmine of details for your project. Of course, my favorite section offers organizing solutions for the kitchen, including cabinet accessories and room layout, but it is sure is refreshing to see this as an issue before construction rather than an afterthought. Great planning!
This makes a great coffee-table book, since you'll refer to it time and time again. But if your coffee table is very far from your kitchen, then perhaps you'll add it to your cookbooks instead. Happy designing!

When asked, Maurice Sendak insisted that he was not a comics artist, but an illustrator. However, it's hard to not notice comics aspects in works like In the Night Kitchen. The child of the story is depicted floating from panel to panel as he drifts through the fantastic dream world of the bakers' kitchen. Sendak's use of multiple panels and integrated hand-lettered text is an interesting contrast to his more traditional children's books containing single-page illustrations such as his wildly popular Where the Wild Things Are.

Customer Reviews:
Story is a little scary.......2007-10-10
The drawings are attractive and creative, but the over all story is a bit scary. I especially don't like "baking" the kid in the oven. Cooking is fun but I don't want to introduce the wrong idea to children that oven is a safe place to play.
Our favorite book!.......2007-09-29
This has been our favorite bed time story for years. Our nine year olds still like having it read to them at night. The pictures are amazing--of course, it's Sendak--but the story is fantastic too. Our children had to explain to Dad that it's just a dream. Some adults may be too literal to get it, if so, just ask your kids to explain!
"In the Night Kitchen" a must for every child's library.......2007-09-17
This book along with the better known "Where the Wild Things Are" belong in every child's library. Great illustrations and text make this book one that parents and children can enjoy over and over again for years.
Brings back the Memories.......2007-09-03
This brings back memories of going to library as a small child and discovering books for the first time on my own. I couldn't read yet, but I would find this book over and over along with Sendak's other book, "Where the Wild Things Are." And look at the pictures and imagine what the story might be. When I could finally read myself, I enjoyed the book even more!
My 2 year old's favorite.......2007-08-30
My 2 year old loves the adventures of Micky, even more than my fave, 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Sendak's art is beautiful and it flows from page to page. He loves Mickey's shouts, from "Quiet Down There!" to Cocka Doodle Doo!" and asks for repeat readings befor bedtime.
This is a classic that holds up well and should be enjoyed by all parents and children

By FAR, the best cookbook.......2007-08-09
I have had this cookbook for 10 years, and it somehow got in the hands of my mom, who stole it temporarily, then admitted it and gave it back! I have used this book to make real food for real families for years, and the recipes are just right for a person who cooks frequently. They are not at all advanced (except maybe the Gefilte Fish Recipe - but it's worth it - YUM YUM!!). I have made about 70% of the recipes in this book, but there are some that I make on a weekly basis - the matzo/potato kugel is insanely good, and probably the best recipe. Also, the blintzes (simple recipe to make the crepe and filling - and really tasty - people think I'm a chef when I make this). I will now buy one for my mom, she's been begging to take it from me again!

Customer Reviews:
Great source of inspiration!.......2007-08-02
My husband and I are turning our uninspired 1968 tract home into a 2 story Mediterranean. We bought the Kitchen & Bath collection to help us in the design phase. These are not "do it yourself" books. Instead, they help you focus on how to design a kitchen or bath that will work for you. They discuss types of flooring, counters, cabinets, lighting, and how to design a space that "works" for your lifestyle and that "flows" well within your floorplan. We have lots of other books with lots of pretty pictures of designer kitchens & baths but these books were the most useful when we finally sat down with our architect. Without them, we would have never thought to include a lot of the little touches that helped to maximize our kitchen space for the way we cook (canning, cake decorating, candy making, entertaining) or how to make the best use of our bathroom space (extra storage and accessibility) since I have a disability. You might think that your architect would help you with all these things but don't count on it. The clearer your ideas are and the better you are able to articulate those ideas to your architect, the better your design is going to fit your lifestyle and the happier you will be when the project is finished.

Great Resource For Losing Weight.......2004-01-07
I've had this cookbook for over a year and it is without doubt the best one in my collection. The recipes are easy to follow and taste great. I've tried numerous ones over the year and every one I've tried has come out perfectly! In addition, there are pages of tips on how to prepare foods that any cook can find helpful. As part of a total weight loss program, this book is a must!
A Treasury of Tips, Charts and Yummy Recipes!.......2002-07-03
This is a great reference for people wanting to cook a little healthier. There are a host of suggestions on how to convert existing recipes to a lower fat menu and there are many illustrations to support the many tips and charts. You will learn how to substitute lower fat ingredients for butter and oil without compromising the taste of your food. The authors discuss the many types of rice, flour, grains, herbs, spices etc. and guide you in selecting the appropriate one for your particular needs. In short, this book is a cooking class in healthy living. Buy this one...you will use it often!
P.S. Weight Watchers' clients will particularly like this book. The nutritional information necessary for calculating Winning Points is included with every recipe and you will have a huge number of dishes that you may prepare within your program.
Low-fat Gourmet cooking?.......2001-12-29
This book is fantastic. Everything tastes like gourmet cooking.
Some of the recipes are fairly simple while others are not. This book is great for people who love to cook and want low-fat alternatives that taste great. Fair warning though this isn't one of those quickie meal recipe books. It is the best cookbook I own, regardless of the low-fat. It gives tons of information on exotic as well as common ingredients. It is a great gourment recipe book as well as instructional cooking book. Not only does this book tell you how to cook everything (poultry, seafood, vegetables, desserts, etc.) it also includes a nice sampling of international recipes for added flair, Spinach/cheese enchiladas, Greek Moussaka, Squash stuffed with Mediterranean grains, to name just a few. You won't get bored.

Couldn't find the story past the sex.......2007-09-01
I thought the premise of this book was great but I was so disappointed. It is one a the few books I threw out. I tried and I tried but I got disgusted with the sex. Give me the story with the sex thrown in, but this guy's every thought in the book was sexual. It was too much for me and I moved on.
Cute and Entertaining.......2007-08-04
This is not my usual genre - but I'm glad I picked this book up! Living in New England, I think the atmosphere was captured nicely and the characters were interesting and amusing. I found a couple of errors (Logan is rubbing his eyes from just waking up in one sentence then putting Shane to bed in the next - and - how come the whole town was loosing power, etc, but the news room's computer works fine - no worry of loosing the work they're doing?)....but - other than those small things - I liked this book and will read more by Ms. Blair.
Blessed Be.
A Fun Read.......2007-03-20
I actually got this because of the title, and then I fell in love with Melody and Logan as the story progressed. It was fun to have a character who knew next to nothing about cooking have a cooking show. You don't see that in this society. All in all, a fun, sexy read.
A great day read ! I didn't want it to end............2007-02-17
The Kitchen Witch by Annette Blair will leave you with a smile on your face. I read My Favorite Witch first and knew I had to read more from this author. In this novel Logan had colorful youth and now has returned to Salem, Massachusetts as suit and tie guy with his four your old son. He is looking for a calm life and a good stable mother for his son. He finds Melody who is "witch" and is fun loving women who loves his son. They end up working together at a TV station and sparks fly and lots of conflicts. I didn't want it to end.
Check out the whole Accidental Witch Trilogy; 1. The Kitchen Witch 2. My Favorite Witch 3. The Scot, the Witch & the Wardrobe.
Looking forward to her new series Triplet Witch Trilogy 1. Sex and the Psychic Witch, August 2007 2. Never Cross a Witch with PMS, May 2008 and 3. The Lady is a Witch, 2008/2009
yummy romp through the not so supernatural.......2007-02-12
I picked up this book thinking it had a little flair of supernatural. I was wrong but still wasn't dissapointed. It turned out to be a sweet and funny story about a woman taking advantage of her reputation as a witch, a very sweet little boy, and his dad who just now gets to be with his son.
I liked the idea of the TV show and the sparks flying between our "witch" Melody and new father Logan. The intimate scenes are not sugarcoated with pretty words, but there aren't too many of them and they don't last long. So if that normally bothers you it doesn't play that large of a role here. I also found the other woman vying for Logan and the situations that came up with her pretty unbelievable...one minute something huge happens and then the consequences are not mentioned for many many days. I still would reccommend this story- just remember to suspend your disbelief during those scenes. This story is wonderful girly fluff and I have gone back for seconds.
