3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting.......2007-01-12

I bought this book hoping to get some decorating ideas for our kids' rooms. It was not at all what I was expecting. It gave me a few ideas for storage, but not worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book - depending on your needs........2007-01-11

I thought this book would be about kids BEDrooms, but it's encompasses all kid spaces. It's great if you are building a home, remodeling or have the space to create as they do. I was disappointed that there wasn't more about kids bedrooms, but I picked up a FREE copy of the Pottery Barn Kids catalogue at my local store and that had what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-11-04

This is a great book. I love the entire design library from Pottery Barn. Lots of fun ideas & good pictures.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kids Room Book.......2006-03-22

I own almost all books on decorating kids rooms and this is by far the best. It has great tips on how to use everyday and/or easy to make items to make kids rooms fun and fabulous. There are a lot of items in the book that they sell but they definitely do not push their product.

I am NOT a fan of Pottery Barn in general, as a matter of fact, I just bought the "Work Spaces" book and found it to be awful, sort of junky old stuff. However, this book is a MUST if you are decorating for your kids. Very practical and useful. My 4 year old son and I looked at every page and he loved every boys room and playroom in this book.

This book was not what I expected at all. Most kids books are full of outlandish or impractical but beautiful rooms. The rooms in this book are definitely not what I would call beautiful, but are very fun and practical for your kids. These are definitely not showplaces. The rooms they illustrate include a bathroom, bedrooms, a playroom, and art spaces.

A word of caution, though. This book does not have several bedrooms, playrooms, or bathrooms. It has a couple of each, but great advice to make your childs room great fun!

Kids' Rooms is a mixed bag: it contains some good design and safety tips, and it is one of the most attractive books in print on decorating kids' rooms. But it also contains tips like this: "If you prefer to use blankets on your child's bed, layer them for added warmth, adjusting the number according to the season." So although one might be tempted to regard this book as symptomatic of a slew of irritating trends (parents' urge to control and systematize children's lives, publishers' urge to stretch what could have been a very good magazine article to the breaking point of a costly full-length book), let's instead take a look at what it offers.

Jennifer Lévy's gorgeous photographs of gorgeous rooms, for one thing. If these beautifully lit, enthusiastically gotten-up bedrooms don't inspire you to cross the threshold into the most forbidden room in the house--ignoring the "DO NOT ENTER. THIS MEANS YOU, MOM" sign on the door--then nothing will. You'll be going at it with stencils and chalkboard paint in no time. The Bon Jovi posters in your 13-year-old's purple-and-pink room won't stand a chance.

The book also features several easy, step-by-step projects like lacy lampshades (spray-painted with a doily stencil), a harlequin-design floor (although the instructions specify using polyurethane varnish, which is expressly banned from use in kids' rooms by the "safety tip" four pages later), a folding screen room-divider (canvas stretchers form the frame, and handy patch pockets are sewn onto each panel), an easy-wipe-up vinyl "play tablecloth" with pinked edges and decorative weights at the corners, a dreamy organza pillow sham, and a handprint-decorated light-switch plate. --Liana Fredley

Book Description

It's an age-old dilemma--how to create a stylish room that still allows a kid to be a kid. Kids' Rooms solves the problem by presenting fresh, original ideas for creating fun yet functional spaces. Aimed at parents of 4- to 13-year-olds, this essential guide to pint-sized d cor offers practical counsel on the necessities of room layout--everything from furniture and fixtures to lighting and window treatments is covered. Color choices, fabrics, and themes are explored along with kid-friendly storage systems (a Folding Screen with Pockets!). In addition, Kids' Rooms showcases 15 fabulous and innovative rooms, that will pique the imagination. These featured rooms, such as the Log Cabin Retreat, the Purple Power Room, and Sheer Heaven, all blend form and function with charm and creativity. Best of all, Kids' Rooms includes numerous projects with easy-to-follow directions, demonstrating that redecorating need not be difficult or expensive. A must-have for anyone who's ever faced the challenge of decorating a kid's room.

3 out of 5 stars Not horrible, but there are better out there.......2006-01-26

The first 2/3 of the book deals with decorating elements -- light, color, furniture, and so on. If you are looking primarily for room after room of pictures to inspire you, this is not the one for you. There are only 9 projects in the 156 pages, and very little instruction on how to acheive a look, so if you are looking for a primer on mimicing a picture in the book -- its not for you. And as one reader noted, this manual is heavily girl-room centric. There are only 11 rooms profiled -- 8 of which are for girls only (highly reliant on pinks and purples, lace and sheers). The few "boy" rooms are nearer to gender neutral and are underdressed compared to the rest.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste Of Money.......2005-10-08

Basically I found this book showing pictures of what not to do. When I am looking to decorate my child's room, I would not want it to look like most of the pictures in the book. Also most of the pictures were geared towards little girls and not boys. The book was just empty. I read/skimmed it in ten minutes and then threw it aside, thinking to myself, what a waste. If you want something special for your children's rooms don't waste your time and money on this one!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on this topic out there!.......2001-04-30

Jennifer Levy's book on kid's rooms is a much needed breath of fresh air in the home decorating book world. Looking for a book to inspire and teach me how to decorate my kid's room, I was shocked to find so many books with strange, difficult and outright unattractive ideas. This book is NOT one of those.

My favorite idea in the book is the folding screen with pockets...living in New York City, where space is a real premium, I found that I could slip books, toys and other items in the pockets while use the screen as a natural divider. Jennifer's instructions were simple, easy and the photographs were gorgeous.

I'm buying this book for my friends. It was definitely worth it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the original "Mission Organization".......2007-07-16

The first time I saw this book my younger sister and I had pushed our poor mom to the limits with our messy room. Dolls, costumes, arts & crafts projects and so much more covered every surface of the room to the point we were barely able to find our beds. One day while we out were playing with the neighborhood kids, after breaking our promise we would clean the room first, my mom went in with big black garbage bags and packed up the entire mess and put the bags in the spare room. When we got home and discovered the "theft" we were livid. After she calmed us down and gave me my favorite teddy and my sister her favorite bunny, she sat us down with this book and we read it together. Gradually we got all our toys and other stuff back and the room actually did stay clean much longer than usual. She never had to take drastic action again because she would just pull out this book whenever the room started looking overly cluttered and we'd get the picture. Now twenty years later, I'm almost obsessively neat and organized (though sometimes it's fun to make a huge mess in the process of reorganizing) and I remember this book fondly every time I undertake a big organizing project. I'm sure it's not the only children's book about cleaning a messy room, but the Berenstain humor and memorable artwork make it a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Scientific Facts not Accurate.......2007-02-07

I enjoyed this book (and others in the series) with my three girls when they were little who all are now twenty-somethings.

As a geologist, it was grating to see dinosaur model toys being referred to as being from the Pleistocene!! (the age of woolly mammoths, sabre-tooth tigers, dire wolfs etc.)

We wrote a letter to the Berenstains and got a cute letter reply from Papa Bear. He said they would correct the mistake in the next printing. OK, that was well over 20 years ago, and the book is still the same. Sigh! And people lament that our children are uninformed about science.

Now that my youngest daughter is about to get a teaching credential to teach science in elementary and middle school, maybe it's time for her to write another letter.

5 out of 5 stars Another great story from the "Bears".......2007-01-03

My 4-yr old daughter has enjoyed the shows and stories involving the Berenstein Bears & this one is just as fun. The story covers the importance of a neat room but throws in some humor during the "pick-up" or cleaning periods involving the entire family. A great short read for little ones who are just learning the importance of cleaning up after themselves. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2005-12-29

This is a great book to teach kids to clean up after themselves and what happens when they don't. In this book, mama gets so fed up with the mess in the cubs' room, that she comes back with a huge box and starts tossing all their things into it. Much at the cubs' protest, all their favorite toys are tossed inside. The illustrations are just wonderful in this book. They show a puzzle half finished and covered with cobwebs, spilled cups and drinks and dust and dirt all over everything. It's just very clear how nasty a room can get when it's not kept in order. Papa bear comes to the rescue and makes the cubs their very own organization center (must have watched HGTV out there in his garage where he makes his furniture!) where they have a toybox and a pegboard to store the items in the room. And, he makes boxes with labels to stack in their closet for their smaller items so they don't come tumbling out onto their heads anymore.

Everyone is very happy with the solution, especially the cubs since now they have a room they can enjoy themselves and with their friends.

Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!.......2007-09-25

I bought this about a year ago because of the airplane on the cover...I decorated my son's room in airplanes and was looking for a mural. I was so impressed with how easy it was to do the airplane, and I was enchanted with the author's other characters, that I also did some of the pond characters over my garden tub, for my son as well! When I get more time, I plan on using other chapters to create murals for my daughter. My mother was so impressed, I am buying her the book as a surprise gift. I highly recommend this book! If you can draw, you can paint these murals!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-08

What a great book! I haven't done any murals yet, but plan to within the month. I imagine it will be relatively easy to do with the guidance of this book. It has great mural ideas, detailed supply lists and recommendations, and it shows how to do some of the smallers elements of each mural step by step. I feel much more confident going into mural painting with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2007-03-08

Lots of great ideas in here, with step-by-step instructions about how they are accomplished. I think one still has to have a little skill beforehand, but it is a great guide.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and inspiring.......2007-01-11

I liked the way this book gave me lots of ideas and how-to tips, and also left it open to add my own adaptions. I will definitely use some of the projects in my granddaughter's rooms when we redecorate them.

This book did give us some ideas on what to have painted in our daughter's room. We actually took a few ideas from this book and came up with our own mural.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful but a bit complicated projects.......2007-08-21

I like this book, but I don't think it is the best between the "decore-it-yourself" books, because most of the projects are a bit complicated to be done without the help of a good carpenter or painter. Fabric-projects are very original and easy-to-make.

The pictures were colorful and the ideas were very creative. The author even tells how to sponge paint, stencil, paint murals, and other challenges. I only wish there had been more info on where to buy what you see in the book and exactly what colors of what brands of paints to use. A wonderful book if you want to stay away from wallpaper!

I had no idea how I wanted to decorate the nursery for my first child, so I quickly turned to several books. This book contains examples of many different decors, with helpful discussions of themes, practicality, and choosing items that will last beyond the nursery stage. The book is an excellent value as it provides a lot of ideas, including instructions for creating some of the ideas shown. It has inspired me to create some of the looks in my own home.

I was very inspired by this book when decorating both my daughters bedrooms. I used a lot of the books creative ideas. Five Stars!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not so inspiring.......2005-07-13

This book had some cute project ideas, but not many that truly inspired me. Many of the projects just didn't tie together into themed rooms. To me, the rooms were not that creative nor ones that I would want to use. This book really wasn't what I was looking for for children's room ideas. If you are just looking to make a few projects (i.e. decorated lamp, storage box, or bulletin board) this book may be what you are looking for. However, if you want to totally redo your child's room another book may provide more inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST decorating book for kids' rooms.......2003-06-13

I've looked through several different books for decorating kids' rooms and if I could only keep one this would be it. This book shows you how to create a beautiful room for your children by just using paint...painting the walls, ceiling furniture, floor, rug, headboard, shelves, decorating accessories or whatever. I am not an artist or interior decorator but I felt like I could do every project described. Most decorating books just show you a finished room and a few comments about different unique characteristics of the room. This book gives detailed instructions for how to create the entire theme yourself. Some of the themes described are castle, safari adventure, carribbean, fairy tale, circus and many more. 4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful with Basic Advice.......2006-03-09

Wonderful advice with clear illustrations. The sample budget listed in the book is financially on target-unless, the reader is looking for something really posh. (www.poshtots.com for most beautiful furniture). Excellent resource guide is listed in the back chapters. Economical but good unpainted furniture similar to what is illustrated, can be found at (www.woodyou.com). City Furniture at www.cityfurniture.com has excellent choices for beds.

For the "murals" shown in the book, the reader can probably use wallpaper or partial "stick on" to create a smilar look, in order to keep cost down. Items can be found at local Art/Craft Store (Pearl or Michels).

1 out of 5 stars Gotta Love This!.......2005-10-26

This is a magnificent idea source for decorating a child's room. Everything is in color and what colors they are, too! There are one to three pictures per page. All ages of children's rooms are represented and they even have a small section on children's bathrooms. I first saw a library copy, but fell in love with the book so much that I decided to buy one for me. I'm a librarian and this is the nicest book I've ever seen on the topic. Happy reading and looking.

5 out of 5 stars THE ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM.......2007-08-16

I am a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a parent. I came across this important book as I was researching my own.

If you care about how your kids live through their childhood and make their way forward through a world saturated with media and technology, you must read this wonderful and informative book. Many principles discussed here may be extrapolated to the Internet.

Don't miss it!

3 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but helpful.......2007-01-08

I picked this book up already convinced that t.v. is basically the worst thing that ever happened to society, so I was skeptical to say the least. However, as the authors state, their intent is to admit that t.v. is here to stay, and for the overwhelming majority, getting totally rid of it would not be an option, and offer guidance in how to make watching it as beneficial as possible.

What this amounts to, it seems, is telling readers that your children under 7 are basically confined to 'Sesame Street', 'Mister Rodger's Neighborhood', 'Blues Clues', and nature shows on Discovery channel. I found their assessment of Sesame Street a little over the top in their praise of its supposed benefits, though later on in the book they admit that merchandising has begun to compromise the integrity of the show and its imitators. The fact is, there are a number of major studies that have directly challenged the ability of shows like Sesame Street to produce real-life results in reading and mathematics, and much of the research the authors cite as supportive of the show was done or funded by the creators of the show themselves, a definite conflict of interest when funding is on the line.

The research on content in terms of sexuality, violence, and materialism that is dealt with is pretty accurate. My biggest disappointment was that the authors failed to spend any real time dealing with the long term effects of visual media on learning ability at the neurological level, a subject that in and of itself makes one quite wary of significant exposure to television. There was maybe a paragraph or two, but that's all.

Overall, the impression I got was that the authors have an underlying uneasiness with the whole idea of t.v., and if they thought enough of their readers would accept it, they'd recommend chucking the thing out the window. However, as stated in the beginning, they know this is impossible, so the book ends up sounding like a hesitant admission of the fact and an almost reluctant setting forth of strategies to overcome the inherent and perisistent flaws of the medium, punctuated here and there by brief offerings of lavish praise for the possibilities of t.v. to expand our horizons and foster meaningful conversation. In short, most chapters give all kinds of wonderful suggestions, but are interspersed with admissions that seem to contradict their earlier celebrations of the potential benefits of television.

Personally, I would still recommend the book since I know also the futility of asking people to abandon t.v. altogether. However, I would strongly urge the reader to also get a copy of 'The Plug-In Drug" by Mary Winn, a book written about ten years ago that comes to the same basic conclusions and recommendations, but is more forthright about the downside of television and the industries it propogates. I find it significant (and revealing), that it was never cited by the authors of this book, considering that it is seen by most who have followed this subject for some time (as the authors obviously have been) as a seminal work. Critics of Winn have labeled her a Luddite, but while she does come off as somewhat hostile toward t.v., she is also realistic and manages to stay objective. It is a necessary companion to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fact-filled and easy to read.......2006-09-24

Finally, there is a book I can recommend to help parents make informed choices about the television viewing in their homes. This well-referenced book is a comprehensive summary of the existing research about TV viewing and youth, yet it remains an accessible read, peppered with interesting personal vignettes. Rather than telling people to throw out the tube, this book offers practical tips to help parents get the most out of what's good on TV, and strategies to mitigate its harmful effects. Reading this book I found both the evidence and the solutions needed to control the role of TV in the lives of children.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for parents.......2006-09-22

If you have a television and a child, you must read this book! Without being remotely preachy or judgmental, The Elephant in the Living Room lays out both the benefits and pitfalls of TV watching for children, and gives manageable solutions for minimizing the bad and maximizing the good. The anecdotes lay out the issues in a way that's clear and entertaining, and the advice is specific and realistic. Each chapter ends with a sort of action plan, which makes it easy to keep track of the important points and put them into practice. The book is also funny and entertaining, making it not just a painless way to get important information, but a pleasant one. There is nothing else like this out there--The Elephant in the Living Room really is a must-read for anyone raising children in today's media packed world.

5 out of 5 stars How do we know what is good for your children and why? .......2006-09-13

TV has been around for over 50 years and has become for most, an unquestioned or unexamined part of life. It just IS. Is what? Good for you? Bad for you? How do we know? We should be critically examining many facets of our culture. But how? Pediatrician and scientist Christakis and Zimmerman give us ways to decide by presenting reasoned opinion backed up by studies in a very accessible way. The concepts are mostly intuitive but not easy for many of us to act upon to benefit our children. Much of what kids watch on TV isn't good for them, nor for society. They give good guidelines for how to use the beast. Ignore this book at your grandchildren's peril.
