3 out of 5 stars Not much on Retail... and pricey for what you get........2007-05-14

A bit dissapointed that there was very little targeted toward Retail, specifically lacking in the areas of shopping center and out parcel development... but the formulas were interesting, and the concepts that were explained... were done so in great detail.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely valuable tool.......2002-10-07

"Land Development Calculations" provides an excellent and innovative strategy for working towards sustainable land use and development. The models for varying land development strategies can assist local government land use decision makers and planners as well as developers determine the carrying capacity of land within realistic thresholds. The accompanying spreadsheets for the development scenarios on the CD-ROM are extremely user friendly and do not place an undue burden on the user by requiring what may be hard to find or to collect data. All of the data required just is typical of what is necessary to make appropriate land development decisions. As a local government planner, I am working towards incorporating the information received from the models in to the zoning and development code as part of the approval process by using it to further assess suitability of the property for the purposes proposed (a zoning consideration required in accordance with the State of Georgia Zoning Procedures Act). I strongly encourage other land planners and developers to read "Land Development Calculations," because of its highly practical and very timely material.

5 out of 5 stars Author Delivers Valuable Techniques and Tools.......2001-10-18

This is a terrificaly valuable technical reference for practitioners who need an efficient method of performing land development calulations. The book and its companion set of spreadsheets enable users to answer two key questions: 1) how much can be built on a given piece of land; or 2) how much land is needed to accommodate a given use? The material is clearly written and well illustrated, especially a series of worksheets leading through the method. Another strength is its comprehensiveness and detail, including all major land-use and micro site conditions.

According to the Stepfamily Association of America, 60 percent of all families are breaking up, and custody and visitation issues loom large in the lives of many parents. Isolina Ricci's Mom's House, Dad's House guides separated, divorced, and remarried parents through the hassles and confusions of setting up a strong, working relationship with the ex-spouse in order to make two loving homes for the kids. This expanded and revised edition (the book was originally published in 1980) includes emotional and legal tools, as well as many reference materials and resources. As one parent said of the first edition, "This book is my friend."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Unnecessary for divorced parents who already get along.......2007-05-31

My five-year-old daughter's dad and I have joint custody and joint placement. Therefore, my daughter travels between our houses (about 8 blocks apart) every few days. I was hoping this book would help her dad and I make the most of our daughter's situation, but it seems to focus on parents who do not get along. Perhaps, because my daughter does not remember ever having two parents in the same home, this book isn't as relevant to her as it may be for some. The book seemed to focus on picking up the pieces, rather than just growing as a nontraditional family. I will say one positive thing: the book stresses avoiding the use of "ex husband" and "ex wife" and replacing with "my daughter's dad". I feel that makes for a better situation.

2 out of 5 stars Seems biased toward the mother.......2007-05-06

I realize that I have only read a couple chapters so far, but I see an extreme bias that paints the father as the parent that only gets visitation rights and has no interest in his children. This is just my opinion, but every story in the beginning of the book came across this way to me.

Hopefully further reading will offer some advice to something similar to my situation - a father that has custody of his daughters after his ex decided that she was gay after a happy 14 year marriage and asked for a divorce. Times have changed, it isn't always the mother that has primary custody anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Mom's House, Dad's House.......2007-01-05

I tell everyone of my client's to get this book and follow the advice of Dr. Ricci to establish a co-parenting relationship after the divorce.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for some, maybe not for others.......2006-09-19

When my wife told me she wanted a divorce, I almost immediately grabbed every book I could find on resurrecting a marriage and handling a breakup with kids. I had plenty of time to read suddenly, after all. I found this book to be not only the most effective in handling kidds, but probably contained the best advice on keeping the marriage together. Alas, it was not meant to be.

A key thing: my children's mother and I have always wanted to be civil with one another. I recognize that many relationships do not end this way, and many parents are abusive or neglectful. There are other books that are better for handling those types of situations. For example, "Where's Daddy?" by Jill Curtis is likely to be helpful for a mother dealing with an absent or abusive father; for me it was not very helpful.

This book can be key in helping a couple that doesn't want their divorce to turn so sour that they can't stand each other's sight. It is helpful in handling each parent's relationship with their children, and their relationship with each other.

If you are already hunkered down in the middle of a war, this book may not be right for you; if you are trying to avoid getting into that situation in the first place, this book should be at the top of your list.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book.......2005-10-13

This is my first choice for book recommendations in my practice for divorcing families. It is a blueprint for how to raise a well adjusted child in two homes. If divorced parents only followed the advice in this book divorce would not be so tragic for children. This book advocates putting the child first and tells parent how to behave civilly and work co-operatively with the other parent for the sake of the child, telling parents what to do and what to say that keeps your child out of the middle of the anger between former spouses. This book is for every divorcing family regardless of your unique circumstances.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids.......2006-05-25

Mom's House, Dad's House for Kids is terrific! The author knows how to speak to kids in a way that helps them understand and cope with the changes that come with separation, divorce, and remarriage. The focus is positive and proactive: things kids can do to feel better, tips on how to talk to parents about problems, strategies for addressing and resolving problems, a framework for exploring consequences when making choices, answers to kids' unasked questions, and more. There's even a section giving answers to the questions that kids hesitate to ask. The book doesn't end with the divorce, but continues with what to expect and how to cope when the family changes once again into a stepfamily. The tone, the format, and the content are super child-friendly. A must-read for kids whose parents are separating, divorcing, dating, or remarrying.

5 out of 5 stars So kids not only survive, but thrive.......2006-05-07

This book can be a young person's full-time guide not just to the logistics, emotions, and decisions that arise during parents' divorce, but also to growing up strong under any conditions. As a mother whose daughter was 9 at the time of divorce (or until she turned 18 or so - she's an adult now), I would have bought two copies - one for me and one for her - so that each of us could have it handy 24/7 and write our own marginal notes. Three copies. One for dad, too. Arguments may be commonplace during and after divorce, but no one could argue with the solid foundation and practical value of Dr. Ricci's ideas or her profound love of children and families. It should be in the waiting room of every therapist, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding My Parent's Divorce.......2006-04-03

When I was 7, my parents got divorced. I am now 18, and looking back I realize how confused I was about the breakup. Recently, my dad gave me an advanced copy of Mom's House, Dad's House for Kids, and asked for my opinion on the book. With the intention of only skimming a few pages, I found myself unable to put it down, and read the book in its entirety. I was amazed at the clear, simple, and compassionate way Dr. Ricci answered questions about divorce that baffled me in the past. The thing that impressed me most about Mom's House, Dad's House for Kids was the consistent positive message it conveyed. Without preaching, the book encourages children to make and fulfill positive goals, respect themselves and others, and above all come to acceptance about their parent's divorce. I know this book would have helped me in the past, and I would highly recommend it to any child going through divorce.

Book Description

The private single-family house is by far the most popular form of housing, and because of its size, it is a popular project with architects. In this book, 15 international examples are presented, reviewing the most important aspects of construction including the use of wood, steel, brickwork and concrete which have all become established materials for this type of building. All plans and details from the base to the roof have been painstakingly researched with the high degree of competence typical of the review Detail and the uniform presentation makes the information immediately accessible, inviting comparison and analysis. The authors provide explanatory introductions to the fundamental aspects of planning, from the design of the floor plans to the realisation, and they set this type of building within the context of the 20th century, pointing towards the potential developments of the single family house.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-12

Very informative and gives a clear precise description of varying types on renovation and adaptive reuse.

5 out of 5 stars best volume in the best detail architecture books available.......2007-08-25

This book is part of a deliriously excellent series of Birkhauser's In
Detail collection, a series of books emphasizing and celebrating the importance of architectural details and the susbsequent spatial magic that emerges from the vigilant attention to design craft. I must say its excellence SHAMES the building culture of The united States of Kitsch. The level of American work in the field of architecture, by comparison, is stunted, nostalgic to the point of senility, and plastic garbage overseen by power broker idiot clients. Sadly, it's painfully, pathetically true, and these books prove it as a matter of course. Why are we (American) practitioners, builders, teachers, students, clients, laypeople, basically everyone really SO ill informed about design????
Don't we care?? Is there so much discord and disagreement?? It's puzzling.
Get these books and feast on the International wisdom; let's get half a clue.

5 out of 5 stars great source.......2007-08-21

The book was exactly as I expected, high quality, detailed explanations in the Caliber of detail magazine. I will defiantly be purchasing the other books in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes opaque, but great projects.......2007-01-05

I found the essays on simple construction to be variable in quality...The chapters on wood and steel either suffered in translation or were student composition exercises to begin with. The projects illustrated, however, are of uniformly high quality, and are documented with Detail's typical precision. For an American architect, many of the projects using wood construction will be eye openers. The stone and clay construction projects are wonderful for daydreaming about a different building culture in this country. Well worth it for the photos and drawings.

5 out of 5 stars a very informative architectural detail review on residential.......2006-07-10

The book describes simple and neat residential building design in detail , shape, and material. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in modernism or minimalism on housing and who desire to improve the residential detil design to be more insighfully clean and blight. As well, the analysis from the publication could be developed to function in other architecture types.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great resource with tons of tips and suggestions........2005-12-18

I love this book because it is well-written and market savvy, but it doesn't talk over my head. The suggestions for how best to utilize my real estate equity are clear and forthright. The predictions for new up and coming areas to purchase in are so helpful(and worth the purchase of the book alone.) Also, the various strategies for planning for retirement make this book an absolute must-have for anyone who owns or dreams of owning a home. I highly recommend this book. As far as financial books go, this gets my highest rating!

5 out of 5 stars Great book on important subject.......2005-12-16

If you or anyone you know has questions about real estate and the investment aspects of it - particularly as they get older then this is the book. After reading it, I decided to give copies of it for Christmas to my parents and my inlaws.

It does a great job of laying out the options homeowners have of using their single family residence as an investment. The real life examples of using home equity with a variety of reverse mortgages, interfamily loans and home equity lines of credit were very useful. It helped clarify a dizzying array of options available to me and others as a homeowner who may one day need to use my home equity to assist in retirement. I found this book to be incredibly thorough, well-researched and well written.

I highly recommend it to anyone with a meaningful amount of home equity and to those who advise investors on home investment options.

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book to anyone who owns a home.......2005-12-14

This is the first book I have seen that clearly describes the many ways one can use home equity as a source of retirement income. With Social Security diminishing in importance, shrinking corporate pension plans, and a volatile stock market, using one's home as an investment can be the cornerstone of a comfortable retirement for many Americans. The authors provide very practical ways for using home equity to enhance retirement, including: renting, selling high and moving to other "value" areas, private annuity trusts, interfamily loans, and sales and reverse mortgages. I like that the authors have invested successfully in residential real estate themselves and that they have advised clients on many of the strategies described in the book. This book is a winner with timeless strategies and loads of advice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Highly recommend it........2005-11-22

This is a great book. Well written and well thought out. I highly recommend it without any reservation, whatsoever.

    Book Description

The desire to have a home of one’s own is still the leading motivation for those who wish to construct or purchase buildings. Row and twin houses and ribbon developments constitute an affordable alternative to the single-family house, especially for young families. In times of tight budgets and rising investment costs, they represent a sensible alternative to the freestanding single-family house, particularly in terms of their use of open space. That they can also be appealing, high-quality houses is shown by the selected international examples in this new volume in the series In Detail.

The projects presented are organized by building material and clearly documented with an area map, ground plans, and interrelated sections. The documentation of examples is supplemented by technical articles offering concrete support and assistance for the planner and building sponsor. In addition to analyzing the typology of the high-density, single-family house, the volume introduces different planning and financing models as well as energy-saving building methods and construction with prefabricated parts.

Fine examples of a type of photorealistic drawing that you don't see anymore, which are reason enough to buy the book. The majority of homes are Tudor or Old English, like the ones on the cover, with just a few Colonials and Bungalows mixed in. The writing is quaint, with bedrooms called chambers, and mentions of breakfast nooks, servant's quarters, and telephone cabinets.

A house that's designed to be beautiful and house an active, energetic family may seem like a tall order for an architect, but the 24 homes featured in The New Family Home meet both needs extraordinarily well. Author Jim Tolpin takes readers through all the nooks and crannies of these well-planned homes, where every inch of space is maximized to create a family living space that's attractive as well as functional.

Many of the 24 homes share several characteristics popular with today's families, such as a great room (rather than the separate living room, dining room, and kitchen configurations of the past), so that family members can feel connected even while pursuing separate activities. A home office sometimes needs to be incorporated into the home or property, as telecommuting has become both possible and popular. Separate media rooms that house the television, video games, and stereo are also frequently requested, as they allow families to preserve the living room as a distraction-free place to spend time with each other.

Adaptability is the key to making these homes work, and Tolpin explains how this element is incorporated into each house. For instance, what is currently a guest bedroom on the first floor of a home can be converted to a bedroom for a teen who wants more privacy, and then to an accessible master bedroom for the aging parents after the child moves out. This flexibility in a home makes sense considering the current trend of families who want to live in their homes longer rather than move when a house no longer fits their lifestyle. By making a house's space adaptable and multifunctional, it can fill many roles through the years, and a family can live happily in one home for many decades.

Each family in The New Family Home required a home designed to meet their specific needs and wishes, and the book documents how the family worked with the architect who translated their requests into reality. The end result is a home that fits each family's particular lifestyle now and for the foreseeable future. --Kris Law

    Book Description

These days, home is often the only place to relax, escape anxiety, and enjoy time with one's family. It's no wonder people are now spending more money and time on their home and its comforts. Recognizing this trend, author Jim Tolpin asked some of the country's top residential architects for examples of homes designed specifically with families in mind. Whether for traditional, single-parent, blended, or extended families, or for accommodating visiting kids and grandkids, all the homes in this book are tailored to the people who live in them.

4 out of 5 stars This is a lot to find in one book.......2004-05-19

I first checked this book out of the library, then liked it so much that I bought it. With 24 homes in it this book was a bit overwhelming at first. It took me a week to carefully read. I agree with the reviewer who said that the floor plans were disappointing. I believe that was intentional so that people don't "steal" the architect's designs. The descriptions at times were too brief and frustrating in their lack of citing sources for materials. The book, though, does what it set out to do very well; promote the concept of flowing and multi-use space as the new design for modern living. Some of the ways that these families customized their homes to their lifestyle are amazing. Everyone should have a custom home because they have a custom lifestyle and preferences. Some of these families made the trade-off of a smaller house to own a custom house that they could afford. These people and their homes are inspiring.

2 out of 5 stars The New Family Home for Al Gore's "Richest 1%"!.......2001-03-21

No no no. This book should be titled "The New Family Home for the New Economy", since practically all of the example homes described could only be afforded by folks who cashed in their dotcom stock options in March of 2000. I hate to bash a book with Jim Tolpin's name on it, but it's hard to believe that this was written by the same guy who brought us "The New Cottage Home" and "Built in Furniture". The idea is right on: homes should be able to adapt to our needs as our needs change. But there are more creative ways of achieving this goal than building a separate room for every activity (a media room, a game room, a home office, an exercise room, and on and on and on, all of which, presto-change-o, turn into something else when we decide little Billy needs a PlayStation room or mommy needs a yoga room), not to mention "Great Rooms" scaled to Jolly Greeen Giant proportions. I would recommend "More Small Houses" or "Building the Not So Big House" (as well as Tolpin's other books mentioned above) as better alternatives. Even if you really do need a bigger house, these books show how small spaces can accommodate more -- more stuff, more activity, more living -- and nothing could be more important in this day of starter-McMansions and astronomical building costs.

5 out of 5 stars Great general ideas for a "family" house.......2001-02-17

We are in the pre-beginning stages of building...writing down ideas, concepts, before hiring an architect to design. This book is great for its general ideas in regard to family houses. The ideas of combined kitchen/living space, children's "quarters", importance of master suites and ensuring the house will fit changing needs as children grow are great. I've taken notes on the concepts I like and would like to incorporate in our home.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of the Family.......2000-08-29

We just finished building our first family home in 1999 and I wish I had this book before we began! We looked at 10,000 floorplans and now live in a craftsman style, family friendly home in the woods. What a gift is a well-designed, well-built house. But the heart of the family is not the building, but the love and commitment which grows between family members by God's grace.

For another book published in April 2000 on the family home, take a look at THE FAMILY CLOISTER: BENEDICTINE WISDOM FOR THE HOME, by David Robinson (New York: Crossroad, 2000).

2 out of 5 stars Nice photos, poor floor plans.......2000-08-15

While this book contains many fine crafted houses, nicely photographed. As an architect, I was very dissapointed with the 'sketchy' floor plan presentation format. Not only do the plans lack a sense of scale (It would be nice to see proposed furniture layouts that could better indicate how people relate), but kitchens and bath rooms are shown just as boxy rooms (no fixtures or casework!)

5 out of 5 stars Birds in an idyllic setting help a girl to find a new home........1999-06-06

Children are fascinated by this beautifully illustrated picture book about a homeless young girl who discovers a house where birds gather. Cynthia Rylant's beautiful prose makes this an excellent read-aloud.It has been a favorite in our school library, and has led to many interesting discussions and written responses.
