Book Description

When it comes to job-productivity, we all want to be able to perform well, especially when it comes to challenging assignments. Anyone who works with Microsoft Access on a regular basis knows that this program can prove to be one of the most challenging. If you are looking for a way to get the most you can out of the primary Access tasks, Microsoft Access 2003 Forms, Reports and Queries is the learning tool that you need. Focusing only on the forms, reports and queries functions, this book provides you with practical know-how, real-world examples and techniques that you can put to use immediately. Learn to condense mountains of information into manageable molehills of useful knowledge, so that you can perform at your best!

Download Description

Microsoft Access is a large, intimidating program. Unlike Word or Excel where users can perform basic tasks without much in the way of training, Access presents challenges from the outset. Most users never progress beyond creating simple tables and using Wizards to create basic forms and reports. At the same time, all users - from managers to researchers to administrative assistants - need to know that what they seek is embedded somewhere in their Access tables. Without a more sophisticated knowledge of how to extract and present that data, they are forced to rely on office gurus and overworked IT people to provide canned reports or one-size-fits-all solutions. This book changes all that by giving readers the skills required to etract the data they need (queries), build efficient front-ends for that data (forms), and publish the results in an attractive and easy-to-read format (reports). To that end, this book shuns the big Access picture and instead focuses intently on queries, forms, and reports. This in-depth approach will give the reader the skills and understanding he or she needs to get at the data and prove the old adage that knowledge is indeed power.

2 out of 5 stars Dont Believe the Hype.......2007-10-10

All the other reviews must have been written by the published or author because this book was definitely not 4.5 stars. The content is good, but if you are trying to learn access it is pretty confusing and annoying to use as a reference. Not enough examples and too many wordy descriptions which become confusing and annoying to decipher. Not to mention my book came missing about 50 pages.

2 out of 5 stars Needs meat!.......2007-08-18

If you are a beginner then there is some value. Any higher skill level then you will find that the book lacks meat - nothing new or exciting or creative to forms, reports or queries that you could not get out of some dummy book. No cd to practice with and some of the examples are unclear.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference for busy business analyst.......2007-07-08

This book is well organized and makes referencing functions, concepts and procedures easy for the busy working analyst. The book covers all the "little things" that makes Access the quicky but useful business tool. Excellent "on the go" reference, I didn't sit down to read this cover to cover but have managed to read most of the book just by looking up the one or two concepts I need at the moment. Excellent for office use!

5 out of 5 stars Great reference and intro if you are familiar with programming.......2007-03-24

I've never done SQL or DB programming before, but I have experience with data structures and programming in other languages. This book was a great reference tool to introduce me to the language. Most importantly, it laid out syntax very neatly. I skimmed through most of it in a few hours and was successfully writing SQL queries (no wizards) afterwards. The size of the book is really nice. A great reference to keep handy.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Behind!.......2006-11-22

I just completed a very time-sensitive project with the help of this book, and would not have been able to meet my deadline without it! As a beginner/intermediate Access user, this book gave me all the information I needed to quickly throw together a database with a simple user interface that did some fairly complex calculations in the queries. Unlike Microsoft's online help, the excellent layout, table of contents and index of this book make it easy to find ways to accomplish what you need to do, even if you're not sure exactly what terminology to use. I would recommend this book for anyone who who knows that Access is capable of doing lots of cool tricks, but just isn't sure how to get it to do them.

Book Description

Desk drowning in papers? No room for the car in the garage? Santa still sitting on the roof in May? A less-is-more philosophy is great, but we all still have way too much stuff. The home office swallows up whole rooms, as does the family computer station. Then there's the home gym, the TV room, and the playroom, not to mention our collections - books, CDs, toys. Time management experts agree that when the minor things that take up space in the mind are eliminated, there is room to think about the big things. The same goes for the home. The visual clarity that comes from de-cluttering rooms, finances, and time promotes mental clarity, peacefulness, and contemplation. When everything is organized, it is easier to enjoy the meaningful things in life.

Organizing Plain & Simple is like a course from an expert teacher, grounded in the fundamentals and enriched with philosophy, tips, anecdotes, illustrations - everything necessary to make home and life run more smoothly. Donna Smallin takes a personalized, nonjudgemental approach to explaining how to assess each individual's situation and suggesting where to start organizing - room by room - and then covers how to stay organized. Then she offers advice on organizing time and finances, as well as organizing for the seasons and for special events - the birth of a baby, combining households, a move, kids going off to college, successful downsizing. Smallin presents a broad range of innovative solutions in the running feature "One Challenge, Three Solutions" that includes tips for solving classic organizational issues from a wide range of professional organizers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Creative Ideas! Good Tips.......2007-07-15

In addition to the valuable information in this book, it is filled with tips and checklists that are well put together. The book begins by talking about organizing in general and then focuses on specific rooms, finances, time, home life, and transitions.

5 out of 5 stars You're Smart, You're Disorganized, Smallin can fix that !.......2007-07-04

Donna Smallin's book delivers ! Organizing Plain and Simple, offers people a reasonable and concrete way to dig out from under the chaos. First, you declutter. Her excellent suggestions on how to finally accomplish this daunting task gives one hope that it can be done. No organizing cliches here, instead, yellow panels of ideas and actions targeted to specific problems appear among the text as quick, handy action steps to move you forward in your efforts.
She tells you what to write on labels, how to select storage options, ( disorganized people rarely measure, that's a problem), what to do if you can't seem to discard a particular item and reminds you that what you really want is to be surrounded by what you love. You learn how to keep what is left so you can find it everytime, and not spend money to replace "lost" items.
Donna Smallin is the sensible friend, who knows you and wants you to succeed, and she is guiding you to be able to do it yourself and to understand why and how.
You even get a reward at the end...the organized life you deeply desire...that now has room for better things, personal confidence, career success, pleasant surroundings and the time and ability to share your hospitality with others.
READ THIS SMART, INTELLIGENTLY WRITTEN BOOK AND RELEASE YOURSELF FROM CHAOS, CONFUSION AND CLUTTER FOREVER ! You deserve that joy.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-06-27

A lot of what is in this book is just plain common sense that you probably already know. The reviewer is correct that this book is also lacking in focus - it's all over the place. I did not find this book either helpful or useful.

3 out of 5 stars too much information.......2007-04-13

This shows the importance of finding self-help books that suit your personal needs. Someone who lives alone in an apartment will have different problems from someone who lives in a McMansion with five kids and three dogs. I'm always on the lookout for organizing and decluttering books and my place is always a mess. Fighting clutter is a never ending battle. However, while this may be a great book for some people, it wasn't tailored to what I needed. I feel overwhelmed by it. I don't need to know how to pack for a vacation or organize a move, for example. I'm good at those things. I don't need to know how to run a garage sale (not in this area). I don't need to know how to invest or pay bills or buy things on sale. What I need to do is keep the clutter at home under control without spending a fortune doing it. The book does have some good parts, but I'd say about 50% was useful to me. This doesn't mean I think the author did a poor job or that this book won't be a valuable resource to the next person. I did get it on sale, but I'll warn you that these books need to be carefully selected.

2 out of 5 stars For the plain and simple.......2006-08-24

This book is 'oragnized' into sections - Getting Started, Organizing Room by Room, Organizing Finances, Organizing Time, Organizing Home Life, and Organizing Transitions.

Who needs an entire section telling you the benefits of being organized - isn't that why I bought the book? The author takes 'plain and simple' to new heights...for example - "To organize your refrigerator, start by uncluttering it."

I was hoping for something with more substance. There was nothing in this book that I didn't already know. If you're looking for something very basic as far as what to do in your home...you will like this book.

Book Description

The goal of this book is to present and compare various options one for systems architecture from two separate points of view. One, that of the information technology decision-maker who must choose a solution matching company business requirements, and secondly that of the systems architect who finds himself between the rock of changes in hardware and software technologies and the hard place of changing business needs.
Different aspects of server architecture are presented, from databases designed for parallel architectures to high-availability systems, and touching en route on often- neglected performance aspects.

1. The book provides IT managers, decision makers and project leaders who want to acquire knowledge sufficient to understand the choices made in and capabilities of systems offered by various vendors:
2. Provides system design information to balance the characteristic applications against the capabilities and nature of various architectural choices
3. In addition, it offers an integrated view of the concepts in server architecture, accompanied by discussion of effects on the evolution of the data processing industry.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars still many choices.......2005-04-24

Chevance gives good coverage to both the hardware and software issues. In the field of multiple/concurrent processing, there is still a variety of hardware offerings. You get a discussion of trends. Most importantly of whether the Intel or AMD chipsets might predominate over more specialised chipsets for future architectures. The economics of mass produced cpus suggests that you may want to hedge your bets as to what you commit to.

Further up the food chain, the book goes into various software approaches, especially with an eye towards being deployed on Web servers. Unlike some specialised multiprocessors, which might be mainly used in science, the Web servers have broad appeal. Here, Enterprise Java Beans, object pooling and other subjects are gone into. However, while this section of the book may have broader appeal, it is more comprehensively covered in other texts.

Developing Solutions with Microsoft InfoPath - reference book

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for advanced InfoPath topics.......2005-06-14

If you want to get more indepth with InfoPath, this is the book for you. It covers advanced topics to launch you into designing more powerful digital forms.

I especially enjoying the topics on workflow, sharepoint and Web service integration.

1 out of 5 stars Another Microsoft "Bookware"..........2005-02-21

Just two comments:
1) This books fails to convince me that InfoPath is a necessary product at all. Looks like more bloatware from Microsoft. It is nothing more that a weak scripting technology. Microsoft should have used more time in better development for Access, or Excel, instead of creating some new package. But I know some people at MS, and I know that a new product there means another position for Product Unit Managers, Development Managers, Test Managers, etc. So, that is probably the only reason they needed to add yet another product to the already bloated Office.

2) It looks like the book authors understand InfoPath, but then they don't understand anything else: BizTalk, Web Services, etc. The book is very, very, very weak when it comes down to software architecture and design. And it comes short in many other issues that affect any other piece of software built nowadays: globalization, customization, security, etc.

A better use of your time and money is probably not to use InfoPath at all in your projects. Stick to SmartClient technology, which is well explained is several paper in MSDN.

5 out of 5 stars If you must code in InfoPath, this is the only book .......2005-02-04

With all due respect to my esteemed fellow InfoPath programmer, this is the only book worth owning if you have to code complex projects in InfoPath VBScript or JavaScript. InfoPath is supposed to be the world's most cutting edge XML tool. With it's strong hooks to Web Services, it's supposed to be a thin-client tool for th 21st century. But how do you code connections to a Web Service? How do you auto populate a form using information queried from a web service? How do you query a web service from code in the first place? How do you access a UDDI catalog from code? How do you fill a list box with a number of web service descriptions to let the user choose which one is the correct service? How do you code a master-detail one-to-many form in VBScript or JScript?

This is the only book which shows you how to code this very common, typical, highly characteristic programming problems.

2 out of 5 stars Started good and then fizzled.......2005-01-28

I understand that it's probably not that easy to write a book for something like InfoPath. It's a powerful product that has tons of ins and outs; however, I expected much more for my money. Some of the examples in the book get shortchanged on explanation, and the reader is often left to fill in the gaps. In addition to that, some chapters, like chapter 10 don't even have functioning code. For instance, see if you can spot the error with this line of critical code:

Dim sContact As String = String.Format("//Roles/Approvers/{0}[@alias=" & Quote & "{1}" & Quote & "]", sAlias)

Perhaps it's just me but it seems that the string.format needs to be passed two arguments rather than one. This is in a project that attempts to implement workflow.

This also brings to mind how the DEVELOPMENT part of the book is handled. It's fairly standard in development books to start out with simple examples and build iteratively in complexity as you go. Not with this book, you get little bits and pieces of managed code and then get a BUNCH of code in Chapter 10. Not sure why the authors decided on this style. Perhaps they were trying to show how far you can go with declarative programming.

As far as InfoPath goes, I am not sure how the standard everyday user of Office products is supposed to get excited here. The minute you need to do something even moderately standard, like having multiple sign-offs on a document, you are forced to code. And once you are forced to code you had better understand the DOM, XML, XPath, etc. Not sure what Microsoft was thinking.

Not sure that this book is much help.

    Book Description

Today, hard disk drives for desktop PCs, laptops, servers, and storage appliances use either Parallel ATA or SCSI interconnect technology. Serial ATA is the new storage interconnect standard for these systems. Computer engineers and architects who plan to incorporate Serial ATA in new products must answer questions such as: Why make the change? What problems does Serial ATA solve for me? How do I transition from Parallel ATA to Serial ATA and from SCSI to Serial ATA? This book helps you answer these questions.

If you are a systems engineer, product architect, or product line manager, you could be asked to contribute to the planning process for a transition to Serial ATA. This book provides you with reliable information, in sufficient technical depth to help you implement the Serial ATA specifications.

Topics include PHY signaling and interface states, protocol encoding, programming model, flow control, performance, compatibility with legacy systems, enclosure management, signal routing, hot-plug, presence detection, activity indication, power management, and cable/connector standards.

This concise, yet complete book is a great way to learn about this new technology, very likely to dominate storage interface to HDDs. It is a great substitute for going through the actual specs, and the authors have a wonderful job of presenting the material to the novice. It is also a wonderful peek into other serial interconnect technologies.

4 out of 5 stars Make your own furniture!.......2006-03-08

This book is fabulous for those who are into making their own furniture.. it has some quite good tutorials of how to make your own cupboards, closets and shelving systems..

Its more about 'practicallity' rather than creative ideas..

Once that goal is achieved, it shows readers how they can improve their lifestyle to create the organized, peaceful, and beautiful home they desire.

1 out of 5 stars Martha Stewart on steroids x2.......2007-08-27

I bought this book because I have an average sized home without very much storage space and wanted to maximize my space. What a waste! I don't know where these authors live, but clearly it is not on the same planet as me! For example, one of their brillant suggestions is to install a refridgerater in your laundry area for drinks and snacks so you won't need to leave your ironing to go to the kitchen and thus interupt your ironing. a) in today's world of wash-and-wear, who sits down and does a weeks worth of ironing? b) if I had room for a fridge in my laundry area, I wouldn't have bought this book! They also suggest keeping a household journal for various things such as noting where you stored your spring candles when you put them away to make room for you winter candles. You can also note which brands worked best, and which scents you prefer. Also, when you are at social engagements and friends happen to mention their food allergies and/or preferences, you can write them down on a little slip of paper and later transcribe into your journal to reference when you give dinner parties. Who are these people??? Don't buy a copy of this book--you can find mine for free in the trash heap.

    1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!.......2007-08-21

The book has pretty pictures, so why not hire author Randall Koll, who is not a certified interior designer? It may turn out to be a very costly mistake. We hired Randall in the fall of 2006 to organize and furnish our home. In January 2007, Randall was given a check for thousands of dollars to buy furniture. It is now August 2007 and our home is still not organized and we still do not have new furniture. Randall has not returned any calls or e-mails since May. So save your money and learn from our expensive mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish and practical.......2006-06-30

I have two young children, a packrat mate, a home-based business, and a newly purchased, super tiny apartment. Need I say how easy it would be to drown in a sea of clutter?

Koll and Ellis' book is full of beautiful photographs and simple suggestions for taming the stuff in your life while leaving room to celebrate it. I've read too many magazine articles and websites that make the reader feel guilty or inept, this is a book that understands that organization isn't tyranny but emancipation. I also love how many of their concepts are budget-friendly.

Although many of the photos in the book feature spaces far more expansive than my own, the ideas the authors present for everything from storage solutions to good housekeeping habits are easy to implement. If I had room for a coffee table, this would be a lovely addition to it.

    5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2006-03-22

i have been working on the "clutter" in my home, and this book had good ideas and helpful pictures to go with them. i am on a tight budget, but was able to take ideas and mostly just use things i already have, just adding some baskets and bins here and there. i recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and functional storage solutions...A must for Every Household.......2005-06-29

Like the other reviewers, I love this book! If you love your stuff, want to keep it, but need great ideas on how to "contain the clutter" and beautifully display your rooms, this book is for you. Each chapter contains several ideas for organizing the different areas of the home. It covers many decorating styles and tastes. It's all about functional yet beautiful furnishings that work for your lifestyle. I can't say enough--buy the book and you will see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Everything to begin.......2006-01-06

I first became interested in databases while trying to make something helpful for a university library reserve department where I worked. Experimentation and consultation with the people at utteraccess.com led me to a good conception of what I would need to accomplish. Unfortnately, it was more than I could do in my spare time before graduation.

This book covers everything I learned and ties in with what I learned from my Abstract Data Structures course. Anyone who finds themselves working on a database without any prior experience should read this book; it's an exellent introduction to the concepts and methods of database design.

One thing I wondered at was the authors' failure to even mention the argument against using real data as primary keys. On utteraccess they make a good case for why primary keys should be only identification numbers for the database and not object attributes. Even if Connolly and Begg have a different view, I think they should have discussed the controversy and the reasons for their preference.

In all other respects I found this a thorough, helpful book that will not overwhelm the beginner with technicalities, but will establish a solid foundation for database work.

5 out of 5 stars Really explains it well.......2003-10-25

I liked this book from the start because it explains how to start up a database from scratch to finalization and with great detail. 426 pages of good information for the amateur or pro. Comes with a CD full of examples and sql scripts to use and two full length, coded example databases.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!.......2002-04-19

The authors have probably done a favour to the database designer community with this book. Wonder why nobody thought about a book of this kind before. There are numerous books on generic DBMS but very few on Database Design. The book is equally useful for managers and developers. The examples are superb and have been thoughtfully presented and analysed.

Also the fact that the authors decided to use UML as the data modeling notation instead of traditional notations makes this book more "in tune with times" and "practically applicable" in a software development environment.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource.......2000-11-04

This book strikes just the right balance between theoretic rigour and practical examples/advice. The book defines an explicit, multi-step methodology, covering everything from requirements analysis, to logical modeling, to physical implementation, then shows how the methodology can be used in two involved, yet accessible, practice cases. The authors also sensibly show how this is implemented in common DBMSs (Access and Oracle).

If that wasn't worthwhile enough, the book contains two superb appendixes: one shows alternative modelling notations, the other provides diagrams and tables for 15 common data models. These in particular are an excellent idea -- I'm surprised more database design books don't provide them.

At any rate, this is the one database design book that I tend to recommend to my students. For students who are finding the formal computer science database design textbook too abstract, this book is a good counterweight; for students who need a single overview of database design, this book too is a great choice.
