One lovely feature of this volume is that it shows the real material that inspired different faux finishes next to the excellent painted imitations. After extensive coverage of all aspects of getting started (tools and materials, preparation, safety concerns, and design and color considerations), and of working with glazes, there are dozens of detailed recipes for various marble and graining effects. The final chapter, "Professional Practice," explains how to set up your own decorative-painting business, including assembling a portfolio, identifying and reaching your market, financial planning, calculating rates and expenses, preparing samples, organizing the workspace, and working with clients. You'll even find a prototype contract and a checklist of supplies to bring on the job. Those who want to produce spectacular faux-finish results will learn a lot from Professional Painted Finishes.

I was looking forward to this book but was rather disappointed due to the extensive written instructions but the rather sketchy illustrative photos.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2006-06-01

I bought this book more than ten years ago, I have an almost complete collection of books on painted finished, especially of wood and marble. The "Professional Painted Finishes" is absolutely the best I have, it is oozing QUALITY throughout. It is not for beginners but is The reference to return to again and again. It is also lovely just to browse through.

5 out of 5 stars Good variety.......2004-06-30

I liked this book because it contained great illustrations and it also had helpful information about the business side of faux finishing. The text is compact, so each page contains alot of data.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book - Knowledge of teaching & Painting -.......2001-12-09

Great book for all levels.
Ina and Allan Marx run a great faux finishing school that has spawned this great book. Complete
and through it a bible for novice to expert painters. Not only do they teach you the technique, but alos
how to "look and see" the item you are painting from nature. They are true professionals and
above all both are excellent teachers. I have taken their classes, and as there is no substituion for
taking one of their classes, this book is a great how to guide if you can't take one.
Excellent. Their knowledge of teaching and superb knowledge of faux painting marry in this books.

3 out of 5 stars Better books out there but this has lots of photos.......2006-05-29

I've read a lot of decor books about color. I consider this book barely average. This book is filled with photos of rooms with color swatches used in the room. I often found myself trying to find the color of the swatch in the room. Many times I was not successful. For example, on page 116, the bottom left photo has a lilac color swatch but I did not see any lilac in the room. The sofa, the focal point in the room is a salmon color. There is no salmon color in the swatch.

The book DOES have lots of photos, which is always nice. There are some good-sized photos of some rooms, then renderings (not photos) of the same room elements in various color schemes. Sometimes the renderings work better than at other times. For example, page 30-31 shows a stair and entry/hall area. The renderings are a good representation for possible color choices. Less effective were pages like 62-63 and 130-131, maybe because there were too many elements in the rooms.

There are color swatches pages with only 6 swatches per page. This means sample colors are an adequate size (page 120-21). There is a section on faux, paint and textural techniques. This section included info about the suitability, materials needed to create the look, cost (low, high), time required to create (moderate, high) and a short paragraph on tips of how to do it yourself. There are no step-by-step instructions, just tips.

It seems to me that the publishers may have thought more was good, but even more was better, but for me there was just TOO much in this book. It was as if it was trying to be too many things at once and not doing any of them well.

If you are looking for help in selecting colors for rooms, I would recommend: Color Schemes Made Easy (Better Homes & Garden) by Shelley Stewart (one of my favorites),
Color Harmony by Hideako Chijiiwa (Warning: sample colors are very small but nice book), Color Your Home Beautiful by Martha Gill (gorgeous vibrant colors, fantastic photos) and Color Solutions by BH&G (Several solutions in this Q & A format. Lots of great solutions and information for your color projects). There are even more books on paint and paint techniques but these are just books on color. See my reviews for details about each of these books.

3 out of 5 stars This book was exactly what I expected........2002-12-27

Obviously, since this book is printed by Benjamin Moore Paints, there will be a certain amount of self-advertising following it's advice on choosing the proper paints and equipment (like the recipies on the back of soup cans).
However, this book was a good primer (pardon the pun) for anyone who is compentant enough to paint the insides of a house, and is just starting to tackle the outside of their home.
I found it chock full of useful advice, but lacking in enough procedural details to be called a "step-by-step" guide.
It'll say things like "Strip and sand the exterior trim before priming" and I'll say things like "HOW?!?"

    1 out of 5 stars I'm still stuck.......2002-03-05

I have purchased several guides for painting houses in the "home improvements" category. They were fine for learning about painting a house, but I'm hiring painter, so I don't really need that information. What I need is help choosing the right color. Obviously I don't want to make a mistake. I already know that I want a yellow house. But none of the colors I have tested look right. They are all too bright or dark even though they look pale on the paint chips. When I saw this book, I noticed the phrase "choosing paint colors" right in the title, so I assumed it was the answer. But, I felt every bit as stuck at the paint store as I did before reading the book. My expectation was that I wouldn't have to start going through paint chips anymore, but the information in the book wasn't specific enough to be useful to me. The book did not meet my expectations.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the painted houses?.......2002-03-04

I thought this book would give me photographs of painted houses and their paint colors. Instead it gave detailed information on the paint process itself with scant few houses where the whole house shows. Its mostly pretty photos like the rooftop of a house with a weatherwane on it, or a window with a window box of flowers under it. Where are the painted houses? I can't figure out what color to paint my house using this book.

1 out of 5 stars More attractive than helpful.......2002-03-03

I bought the book because I needed help figuring out what color to paint my house, but it really didn't help me. The book looks good, but what I need is help choosing colors. I returned it.

4 out of 5 stars The Art of Exterior Painting.......2000-08-08

Painting a house or even thinking about it is no fun. I visited a Benjamin Moore Paint Store and browsed through the store's only copy of the book, The Art of Exterior Painting. The book is very well written with the basics of house painting described in detail and with color photos describing problems, solutions and ultimate results. The book impressed me so much I went home and ordered it via Amazon for my own reference as I plan to paint my house. An excellent PRIMER!

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very good book.......2005-10-08

I found this to be a very good book and very educational. I am painting my 19th century house using it as a guide. In the previous review someone wrote:

"Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses."

This person has obviously missed the point of the book. Did you read it? Those _are_ color drawings and those "muted browns and beiges" _were_ the colors used back then. People have a stereotype of 19th century colors as supposedly being bright and contrasty; this is due to the colorist movement in San Francisco back in the 70s, but is not appropriate when seeking 19th century accuracy. The crazy row-house colors of San Francisco are modern interpretations; whereas the Victorians preferred earth tones. The authors go at length to explain this with drawings and historic reproductions that are accurate in color.
My only gripe with this book is that there should be more photographs of 19th houses painted historically. I think more photos would give home restorers more ideas to pick from.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a good reference book for old house lovers (like me!).......2000-05-02

This book is over 110 pages and every page has at least one picture, and most have two or three.

Beyond the good information re: color schemes, there is a lot of information in this book about the 101 details (fretwork, finials, porches, etc) of an old house.

Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses.

There are also some very interesting old paint ads - such as one that suggests the right house paint is *the* key to health and happiness. The book also contains plenty of written information and history, which is interesting reading.

And the photos/drawings offer a nice blend of the ostentatious Queen Annes and by contrast, the simple and modest "Builder's Style" homes.

I'm an old house purist trying to redo my simple old home as authentically as possible. This book is a good resource for that.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent detail, very helpful.......1999-07-07

I really enjoyed all the details and information so that I can paint my own Victorian home. Good color combinations, great historical information. I do wish there had been a few more photos of correctly painted homes.

      Book Description

A few years ago, decorative painter Sunny Goode created Sunny’s Goodtime Paints with a single goal in mind: giving everyone the means to reproduce the beauty of old fresco plaster, stone walls, or glazed finishes in their own homes. Paint Can!—a lavishly illustrated, inspiring, and instructive primer on how to add decorative flourishes with paint—is the next logical step in her mission. She offers a complete on-the-page course called “Paint 101” and explains just what paint can do, from highlighting architectural details to making small rooms appear larger. And almost every technique is here: colorwashing, working freehand, stenciling, glazing, imitating stoneblock, and adding patterns to a surface. It’s the simple way to add color and personality to every room.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! We all want to make the right choice when redecorating. Sunny Goode is very experienced and has put her vast knowledge and creativity into beautiful printed pages and easy-to-follow directions. I have done several faux finishing wall/room projects in the past so most of the "how to" sections were a review or variation on techniques. What I loved was the additional ideas and use of stencils. I'll use this book for years!

      Book Description

Paint and Color in Decoration celebrates the work of some of the greatest names in interior design, from Robert Adam to David Hicks, and reveals the techniques and materials they pioneered. It is a fascinating history of 400 years of paint, color, and decorative style from Farrow & Ball, the world's leading manufacturer of traditional and modern fine paints.

This volume explores the process of making fine paints and the varying effects produced by different formulations, finishes, and painting methods. Through a wealth of illustrations and in-depth analysis, the book demonstrates what we all instinctively know: color is an essential element in interior design and decoration. The colors have names almost as rich as the history of the houses they adorn, with Passage Yellow, Feasting Green, and Cook's Blue among a panoply of hues whose origins and adaptations for the home are described here in detail.

A source of inspiration for professional and amateur decorators and interior designers alike, Paint and Color in Decoration contains a wealth of ideas and practical information at a time when historic paints have never been more in fashion.

3 out of 5 stars Paint Geek Tome.......2007-09-11

Beautifully printed (Rizzoli) with a wealth of info on historical paints and formulations.....tho not really of interest to the average reader.

Also, caveat emptor, this volume is produced by Farrow & Ball, purveyors of spectacularly expensive paints, and is basically a marketing device for their products.

For a paint geek like myself it is a pleasure, though.

4 out of 5 stars Looking at Color with Old Eyes.......2007-03-02

I had wanted this book for some time prior to buying it. It is thick, substanital and nicely made. If you love paint, the photographs are lovely. That said, had I had access to this book in a library I would not have bought it. Despite it's size it is a quick read. The most valuable part is the information on various types of paints. This is not a book for someone needing basic color information and inspiration. This is a nice addition to a substantial color library especially for those who love F&B paint.

      4 out of 5 stars Classicly Stylish.......2007-01-05

I found this book to be a beautiful testimony to the rich and historical colors represented by the Farrow and Ball company.

I thought, Oh another book on color ! But this one completely surprised me. A classic and timeless lay-out of beautiful photographs and truly educating text tailored this book into a must have for anyone interested in decoration.
Obviously the authors know what they're talking about and they mastered their book in a way only the british can do.
I bought that book for all my best friends as a Xmas present and my gift to you is an advice: buy it too !

      5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-01-15

I am slowly colorizing a newer off-white condo. I have about a million paint charts in a drawer, and I frequently pull them out and ponder colors, and occasionally I pick out a color and paint a room. I recently borrowed this book from the library, and now I'm buying my own copy. It's a timeless resource on color schemes because it's based on colors found in nature.

The book highlights six schemes - arctic, ocean, forest, earth, desert and kaleidoscope (kaleidoscope is not based on nature). Each scheme is introduced with outdoor photographs, then the color schemes are moved indoors and translated into home decor. The results are awesome, and have really helped me focus my color choices.

      Book Description

An invaluable tool for every kind of home decorating decision, this directory packs comprehensive information about color into one handy, pocket-size format. Arranged in rainbow order with removable, perforated color swatches at the end of each color section, the book gives readers a range of hues to consider. For example, the red section shows pure red swatches alongside hues achieved by adding different percentages of other colors to red, so readers can select the right nuance of red for a particular decorating need. Each color section covers the same pertinent topics: color in daylight versus artificial light; color texture and its relation to hue; and how to organize given colors into auspicious combinations. Recipes for mixing paints, washes, and varnishes are also provided, and a card "viewer" enables readers to isolate single colors or look at pairs together.

The title of this book is a "false advertisement".

The Feng Shui sections, and the recipes for making one's own paints are far from practical.

The explanations and illustrations about what colors work well together are far from complete.

      5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2003-02-21

This is the book I had been looking for for many weeks... I found it very comprehensive. Being not too technical (there are other books on the how-to), it gave me great ideas on what techniques are possible and what the implications of a chosen color might be. i had never thought of mixing paint myself! i like the fact that it's has a separate section on each major color, and that it includes detailed thoughts on color therapy and feng shui. the swatches at the end are great to work with. the only negative comment i have to make is on the color mixes photos... most of the combinations don't look pleasant to my eye. overall, i truly recommend this book!

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Complete After All.......2002-04-07

This book is mostly a collection of recipes for mixing your own colored paints. While they offer several recipes for each basic color, it is still an extremely limited color palette to work with. Worse, the blue section is extremely weak as most of the colors have a decidely purple tinge despite the fact that purple gets its own section. There are some nice colors in here, however, and people interested in making their own colors might do well to buy this book.

Perhaps most helpful to me were the brief discussions of each color and their best uses in the home. This includes a feng shui section for those who are interested in that.

Finally, the book also contains examples of which colors go well together which is a nice idea. At the same time, many of the example photos of these supposedly compatible combos are quite garish and ugly from my perspective (unlike some other color books that I've read recently) so its actual usefulness is limited at best.

In summary, this book is probably best for those who want to mix their own paint and perhaps want to learn about the feng shui characteristics of individual colors. Neither topic is explored exhaustively, however, and prospective buyers might do well to look for more comprehensive guides on these topics.

This book just tells you about very basic colours. Not helpful to me in learning to apply colour in different lighting situations, in different combinations - no discussion of colour theory.

      5 out of 5 stars Completely Colorful.......2000-03-28

This book is a great reference for anyone interested in color, from beginners to experts alike. The book covers a wide variety of painting techniques, that are easily explained. Each color is explained and also the color is discussed in feng shui terms as wellas color therpy terms. A must for anyone who is interested in pursuing color a little further.

      Book Description

The colour scheme is often the first thing people notice when they walk into a room, so your choice of shades is the most important decision you will make when decorating your home. Getting it wrong can leave a room looking bland and insipid or overpowering and garish; getting it right is both exciting and rewarding. Here, leading authority on interior design, Caroline Clifton-Mogg, guides you expertly through every aspect of using colour in the home, from choosing the right scheme for the right room to adding the perfect finishing touches. The first hurdle is finding inspiration, so advice is offered on applying the lessons of nature, art, and history to your home. Caroline then explores colour in depth, delving into the nuances of the interior decorator's palette. All colours have hidden subtleties and resonances--think of the rich brown of tanned leather, the gray-blue of a frozen pond, the faded purple of old velvet--and, depending on how they are used, they can make or break a room's design. No colour works in isolation, and successful colour combination is the only way to achieve a winning design scheme. "The Color Design Source Book" shows a wide range of classic and unusual looks--sometimes subtle and sophisticated, sometimes bold and humorous, but always stylish and inspirational. The book also offers advice on using colours to create the atmosphere you want or to affect the shape or size of a room. A frosty living room becomes a haven of comfort; an oppressive hallway, a welcoming entrance; and a dreary kitchen becomes the heart of the home. Finally, the mysteries of professional colour finishes are unraveled, from selecting the right paints for the job to applying decorative finishes or even using textiles to cover your walls. So, whether you are planning a whole new look or simply enhancing an existing scheme with a fresh splash of colour, "The Color Design Source Book" shows how to make colours really work for you in every room of your home.

One of the most stylish publishers that exhibits at Book Expo America each year is Ryland Peters and Small of London and New York. The Color Design Source Book by Caroline Clifton-Mogg is one of their smartest presentations.

Much more than a how-to book, this is very nearly a piece for the coffee table. The size is impressive, the colors more than catching, the paper quality so luxurious a browser notices the "click, snap" sound of the pages as they turn. Mostly, though, it is the content that keeps a reader between the covers. Clifton-Mogg covers color, pure and simply. She explains what it is, gives something of its history and is off and running with the different color group, nicely arranged so that a researcher can find what she wants and a browser just can't wait to go from one luscious assembly of colors to another.

The designs of many of the rooms have a modern British feel, and I'm not in love with them (they remind me of the Terrance Conran books). BUT...the prose in this book is outstanding, and the author has a grasp of the use of cool and warm colors, and what colors tend to look best with others. This is probably the most "entertaining" read you are going to find out of a color design book (most color books are pretty bad). You'll refer to this often.
