This dictionary is very good, the best one I've found so far, and I've been in Norway for 2 months. maybe if I try the best bookstores in big cities can find something similar, but in Norway, most dictionaries will be aiming norwegian speakers who want to learn english, so they don't come with fonetics or gender for words. the only problem with this dictionary is that it's only norwegian english, so I had to buy an english-norwegian, norwegian-english one. what i have to do when I want to learn a new word i know in english, is to look for it in the english-norwegian one and then go to my nice green one and look for gender, plural, etc. also, i'd add some fonectic symbols!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Dictonary you will need when learning Norsk!.......2007-07-30

Learning Norsk had been a real challenge for me. This book really helped me with my travels and learning the language. A real must for anyone learning Norwegian. A great book!

    4 out of 5 stars Good dictionary.......2006-11-10

Good and complete, a very nice book. Too bad it's only norwegian to english, the other way round would have been fantastic.

    4 out of 5 stars YES!.......2006-08-23

Finally, a comprehensive and full dictionary that show pronounciation, and even though for the beginner the "ny-norsk" entries don't seem to be of much use, my husband now after he has become more proficient in the language actually find it interesting having the "ny-norsk" words in there.
Only thing missing to make this complete would be a English-Norwegian part to it, and also this dictionary is due for an update (it's from 1974!!) into the millenium, that would definately give this puppy a clear 5 star, but for now a sturdy 4 star.

    5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive.......2006-08-07

I studied Norwegian for about 3 years in college and used multiple dictionaries. This seemed to be the most comprehensive dictionary that we used. Just like any dictionary it is meant as a reference and not a comprehensive way to learn a language. This is a very handy book to have on your bookshelf if you feel comfortable reading the language but need to translate words every now and again. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

The sensational and utterly unforgettable thriller that exposes the soul of a culture...the heart of a people...and the mind of a killer...

With more than half a million copies sold, The Bomber is the most successful book ever published in Sweden. Now Liza Marklund's extraordinary writing, bone-chilling plot, and irresistible heroine have created an international phenomenon as explosive as the Bomber's devastating blasts.

Journalist Annika Bengtzon is asleep next to her husband when the call comes in at 3:22 A.M. It is the weekend. She's busy with two kids and has Christmas shopping to do. But within minutes she is standing in a frozen December night looking at a nightmare scene of police tape and rubble, and trying to get the best possible picture of it for tomorrow's edition of her newspaper.

A bomb has not only destroyed Stockholm's new Olympic arena just months before the Summer Games, it has blown someone to pieces. Putting a city on edge with fears of a terrorist on the loose, the Bomber will become Annika Bengtzon's biggest story -- or the final nail in her coffin.

As the only woman editor at a Swedish tabloid, Annika is gutsy, she gets stories that others don't, and she takes risks. Fighting for the respect of her colleagues, she finds herself increasingly consumed by her job, maybe losing her family in the process. Now, she has a hunch -- and a secret source inside the police department -- telling her that the Olympic stadium blast isn't terrorism. It's much more personal than that. And Annika knows that the odds are, if she closes in on the truth, she will end up on the Bomber's list of victims.

Set against the breathtaking landscape of the Swedish winter, The Bomber draws readers in like the dark and edgy eye of a TV camera at a nighttime crime scene, delivering a climax that's a blasting cap on a short fuse, ready to detonate a reporter's world.

5 out of 5 stars Good as a Novel or as a Thriller.......2005-11-03

Some detective writers are novelists first, detective writers second.

Robert Crais, Robert Barnard, Sara Paretsky, Lawrence Block (in the Matt Scudder books).

Add Liza Marklund to the number.

This is a fine novel that incidentally happens to be a thriller.

The novel-qualities are more important than the thriller-qualities. Good characterization, fine sense of setting, good pacing, interesting view of social issues--these are all as well done as any novelist would do them.

And the thriller-elements aren't bad, either.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-17

A fairly formulaic who-dun-it, which plods along without too many surprises. There are no plausible red herrings, merely a rather slow unfolding of events. Both the books I have read featuring newspaperwoman Annika Berengtzon follow the same path - a murder, followed by Annika's belief that all is not as it appears on the surface (she gleans this mainly through unspoken nuances from her police contact). Thereafter follow conflicts in the workplace as Annika has to prove that she is correct in the face of unreasonable opposition from various colleagues, and a climax which places Annika in highly improbable personal danger, from which she (naturally) escapes.

The newspaper setting rings true, as Marklund has obvious experience in that area. Some of the characters are quite well drawn, and they are the most interesting part of the book for me. Some of the expositions about the way things work in Sweden are belaboured, but nevertheless informative. However, in a novel, a better author would find a more naturalistic style of imparting information rather than through a mini-lecture style exposition.

Unfortunately, for me, the language is flat and rather leaden. This may be the result of translation. A few things jar (for example Annika going round to the `back side of the building' - rather than the back. )

Other times it is a preoccupation with minute and unnecessary detail, which adds nothing to the story or characterisation:

" She walked over to her office and suddenly realized she was starving. She went over to Berit and asked if she'd like to go to the staff canteen. She did, so they picked up their coupons and set off. They were serving Christmas ham with potatoes and apple sauce tonight . . .

They skipped the ham and chose the salad bar instead. The big canteen was almost empty, and they took a table in the corner."

A whole lot of unnecessary words that add no value at all.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthy read..........2003-11-27

At first glance this book is a bit disappointing, but if you are not immediately enthralled following the first few pages, carry on, it gets better. The real treat of this book is not the actual plot, which is entertaining, but quite frankly unoriginal, but is the character Annika Bengtzon. This is perhaps why she has now appeared in five (going on six) books by Marklund. Annika is confident, determined, and continually flying off the handle, which makes for humorous bits, at least for those of us who can relate. The plot centers around Annika and draws the reader in despite the blah beginning. There are several twists to keep the interest level high. Annika must also deal with balancing her family and her struggle for respect in her male-dominated work place.
[I will skip a plot description as previous reviewers have adequately done so already.]
The translation is very straightforward; again this is no literary masterpiece but an interesting piece of escapist fiction. The English used in this translation is definitely British English, which again adds a bit of humor. Marklund is no Peter Høeg (author of Smilla's Sense of Snow, one of my favorite books), but The Bomber is still worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars The Madd Bomber.......2003-01-24

This was one of the most spell-binding novels I've read in quite some time. It was excellent. So much so that I have just ordered another of Marklund's thrillers -- Studio Sex: An Annika Bengtzon Thriller. Just knowing that I again will be treated to another story woven around this very savy crime reporter, Annika Bengtzon, leaves me filled with anticipation.

The story of the bomber unfolds around pending Olympic Games to be held in Stockholm and; in particular, the life of the managing director. The author has done an outstanding job of making her characters very realistic. Indeed, one is most certainly able to identify with their day to day struggles. As I do with all books I have enjoyed, I dreaded finishing it; while at the same time I found myself unable to put it down. It was very gripping and intense to say the least.

    4 out of 5 stars DON'T MISS THIS ONE...SPECTACULAR.......2001-07-31

Already a best seller in Europe for over one year, THE BOMBER gives a terrific behind-the-scenes view of the Swedish tabloid business as told by author-journalist Liza Marklund. This is the tale of Annika Bengtzon and her courageous attempt to catch a killer while struggling with the stress and demands of a deteriorating family life.

Just a few days before Christmas, a bomb rips through the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm Sweden, killing the head of the Olympic Organizing Committee. In the media frenzy that follows, insistent crime tabloid reporter Annika Bengtzon uses shrewd investigation skills to keep her newspaper a step ahead of the competition. As she deftly unravels the layers of an apparent cover up, Annika finds a source within the police department who tells her that this was not the act of a deranged terrorist group as many have thought; but rather a cold-blooded execution designed by one lone murderer. Annika becomes completely consumed by the story, and in the process neglects her husband and small children. The plot goes into warp drive as she simultaneously juggles the high demands of her family life with the increasing stress of her male-dominated editorial job, and the looming threat of a malicious, cold-blooded assassin bent on making her his next victim.

THE BOMBER is a spectacular debut novel that focuses on investigative reporting and the increasing demands placed on working mothers. While the suspense may not be as calculating as other more well known bestsellers, it certainly works within the framework of the storyline. The only aspect of the novel which presented more of a mystery to me than the identity of the bomber is inclusion of a few "letters" intermittently dispersed throughout the book covering topics such as love, lies, humanity, happiness, etc. (what was THAT all about???????)

4 stars. Although the mystery gets light treatment and the puzzle is not very challenging, the translation by Kajsa Von Hofsen is superbly written.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent companion and starting point.......2005-10-11

Kierkegaard is enjoying something of a revival of late, with many of his works appearing in new editions, and a major new biography available. The English-speaking world has long been aware of Kierkegaard without being very familiar with his work and issues. One might be surprised that Kierkegaard is not better known, since one of his primary focuses upon philosophy is that it begins and ends with the individual - in many ways, he is anti-Hegelian looking for a way of relating existence to the individual, and not to universals.

Kierkegaard was very much a cynic, but still remained a faithful Christian all of his life, if not a faithful adherent to the institution of the church. Kierkegaard was also a satirist and wit, and sometimes it is difficult to discern where that aspect ends and the serious philosophical work begins. He is often considered the first of the Existentialists, but in many ways his work does not quite fit that category.

This collection contains selections from the following major and minor works of Kierkegaard.

      * The Journals * Either/Or * Two Edifying Discourses * Fear and Trembling * Repetition * Philosophical Fragments * Stages on Life's Way * Concluding Unscientific Postscript * The Present Age * Edifying Discourses in Various Spirits * Works of Love * The Point of View for My Work as an Author * The Sickness Unto Death * Training in Christianity * Two Discourses at the Communion on Fridays * The Attack Upon Christendom * The Unchangeableness of God

This collection is no mere collection of quotable-quotes or of key passages, but gives generous inclusion of major sections of the works. Kierkegaard did not write in traditional academic or philosophical structure, so some of his writing is difficult to get through. Part personal reflection, part polemic, part analysis, part literary creative flourish - all of these come together in a fascinating way.

Kierkegaard deals with issues of estrangement and alienation, despair, universals and abstractions, individuality and subjectivity. Kierkegaard sees the person as existing in three different levels - the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious. These are inter-related but distinct in many ways; as they involve the breadth of human experience, Kierkegaard is no mere philosopher, but also a sociologist, a psychologist, a theologian, an historian, and much more.

This is an excellent one-volume edition of Kierkegaard's work, from which one may gain much insight. If coupled with the recent biography by Joakim Garff, it is a very handy reference for Kierkegaard's primary texts together with the insightful writing of Garff.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent selection .......2005-09-08

This is an excellent selection of the work of Kierkegaard. There are writings from 'Either - Or' ' Stages in Life's Way' ' Concluding Unscientific Postscript' ' The Advancement of Christianity' and other central writings of Kierkegaard.
The greatness of Kierkegaard is in both matter and method. His stylistic brilliance, irony and humor are the method. His fundamental reflection on what it means to be a religious individual, and what it means to truly relate to God are the heart of his work.

      3 out of 5 stars not so much a philosopher's Kierkegaard.......2002-10-08

this is a good collection but I think some selections from The Concept of Anxiety - which is Kierkegaard at his philosophically most sophisticated- and maybe even the Concept of Irony, would make this more interesting to philosophy students. Beside these shortcomings its a good anthology available at good prices.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Place To Start Reading Kierkegaard.......2000-09-21

Many consider it objectionable (probably Kierkegaard among them!) to chop up philosophical works so literary in style into pieces to be patched together in an anthology. Others would note that a philosopher is best introduced through a painstaking reading of a classic and definitive text, and thus Plato is to be met in "The Republic," Nietzsche in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," and the later Wittgenstein in "Philosophical Investigations." In the case of Kierkegaard, however, no one work adequately expresses the multi-faceted nature of his messages. His individual works are incomplete as representations of his overall vision. I find, anyway, that they each represent a finely crafted meditation on a crucial aspect of his thought which cannot be fully understood without having all the other aspects in mind. They serve more like chapters in a larger book than they stand independently on their own. That's why Bretall's anthology which presents them as a whole is so valuable.

Bretall also avoids chopping up chapters and ripping quips and humorous digressions or controversial statements out of their context. For the most part he presents key chapters in their entirety and helps to reproduce their context for the reader either by explaining it in his helpful introductions or by presenting enough chapters from a given work that the context of a particular chapter is clear.

Understanding Kierkegaard's context and that of his writings and that of the chapters within them is so crucial to fruitful engagement of his ideas that this compiled tornado of thought that Bretall provides is the best place to start reading him.

But then again, I could be bias because that's how I started reading him...

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Anthology.......1999-12-30

Although SK is not an easy read due perhaps to his prolixity and sometimes tortuous reasoning, this anthology provides the reader with an excellent overview and foretaste of his more demanding, full-length works. Perhaps the single-best introduction to SK in print.

Miller's informative text, accompanied by full-color photography, celebrates the warmth, simplicity, and spirit of the rural tradition in interior design.

My language-learning background is one where I've learned French and Japanese by way of schools, textbooks, online, and CDs. By far, this book is the poorest method of teaching a language that allows an English speaker to dive wholeheartedly into the culture. First published in the 80's (in the US), the teaching methods show their age; especially given the wealth of technology available today.

An example: I've learned via Japanese language that it is important to address fundamentals first, such as enunciating and writing an unfamiliar alphabet. Alas, charts and tables in this book do not provide these options, and it appears the author assumes one has a basic understanding of the Greek language. In short, presupposition reigns. Interestingly, I can see how this text would also be pedantic for the intermediate user, making me wonder at what level one might benefit from this book.

I wish I could recommend an alternative, but I'm in the throes of discovering that myself. Onward...

As a native english and french speaker, learning greek has been a daunting task, until now. With eight months until my planned trip to Greece, I'm finding that with this excellent book, I'm learning proper pronounciations, grammer, and accentation. This book is far better than any phrase book, as it teaches you to think on your feet, not just recite from a page.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Manual on Modern Greek.......2000-04-19

This book was publsihed some twenty years ago, as a text at McGill U in Montreal. It contains the essence of the slightly purist demotic Greek: the grammar, the sentence structure, the vocabulary and so on.

I have been using this book to relearn Greek, having been away from it since childhood, and have found it to be a great self-study tool, better than others more recently published.

It is not a text for the faint of heart. It is a University level text. It is a no nonsense text that teaches the essentials of modern Greek in 400 or so pages

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant from Bjørneboe........2002-10-26

Last year my class and I put up a play as a special school assignment for the Norwegian subject. We chose "The Bird-Lovers". I won't pretend that it's an easy play, because then I would be lying... but it's a play that becomes a part of you, it makes you think.

As you travel to the small Italian village in the district of Torre Rosse you get to know the hunters and the bird-lovers You meet Caruso, Rosa, Piccolino, Cavalli, Marco, Fidele and Sandro. They are the partsans who fought against the Germans during the war, and who suffered because of it. Thus when the German bird-lovers come to form a paradise for the birds they do what they can to stop them and bring the old judge to justice.

It's a play about capitalism, racism, injustice and women's rights, and frankly it is one of the finest plays ever written. If you're in need of quotations to use of any occasion this is the play. Any remark'll do. And the poetry is amazing. I guess "Song to Hiroshima" is the most known one but the rest is great as well.

As I said. It is a great play and we really enjoyed putting it on. It gave us something, still 30/40 years after it was written. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Savage, prophetic satire on economic imperialism.......2000-03-22

A group of Germans want to turn a small Italian village into a tourist haven for birdwatchers. This would require the natives to give up their habit of hunting and eating songbirds. Meanwhile the the natives--who were former partisans during World War II--recognize some of the Germans as their old Nazi oppressors. Bjorneboe makes surrealistic use of this situation to examine the dynamics of economic globalization in a way which hits even harder today than when the play first appeared in 1966. The Bird Lovers is that rara avis, a musical with a totally original plot. It is to be regretted that the translator did not attempt metrical translations of the songs, leaving us without a stageable version of a play which richly deserves to be known in the English-speaking world.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant, but not his best!.......1999-03-26

The author is Norwegian, and wrote a book in the 60's that was banned until the early 90's!

The photos had a detailed description of the pieces in the room and the designers. Good for training your eye in Scandinavian Modern design. Loved the open feel of many of the rooms & appreciation of natural surfaces. Very much what I remembered about travling through Finland. Like the Shakers & Japanese, the outside influences the Scandinavian style. Highly recommend this book.

This is very good book about Scandinavian living. It has photographs from the homes of famous Scandinavian designers like Aarnio and Kjaerholm, to name few. I personally love this book because it has information about designers and manufacturers.
