The Bomber
Liza Marklund Manufacturer: Atria ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0743417836 Release Date: 2001-05-01 |
Book Description
The sensational and utterly unforgettable thriller that exposes the soul of a culture...the heart of a people...and the mind of a killer...
With more than half a million copies sold, The Bomber is the most successful book ever published in Sweden. Now Liza Marklund's extraordinary writing, bone-chilling plot, and irresistible heroine have created an international phenomenon as explosive as the Bomber's devastating blasts.
Journalist Annika Bengtzon is asleep next to her husband when the call comes in at 3:22 A.M. It is the weekend. She's busy with two kids and has Christmas shopping to do. But within minutes she is standing in a frozen December night looking at a nightmare scene of police tape and rubble, and trying to get the best possible picture of it for tomorrow's edition of her newspaper.
A bomb has not only destroyed Stockholm's new Olympic arena just months before the Summer Games, it has blown someone to pieces. Putting a city on edge with fears of a terrorist on the loose, the Bomber will become Annika Bengtzon's biggest story -- or the final nail in her coffin.
As the only woman editor at a Swedish tabloid, Annika is gutsy, she gets stories that others don't, and she takes risks. Fighting for the respect of her colleagues, she finds herself increasingly consumed by her job, maybe losing her family in the process. Now, she has a hunch -- and a secret source inside the police department -- telling her that the Olympic stadium blast isn't terrorism. It's much more personal than that. And Annika knows that the odds are, if she closes in on the truth, she will end up on the Bomber's list of victims.
Set against the breathtaking landscape of the Swedish winter, The Bomber draws readers in like the dark and edgy eye of a TV camera at a nighttime crime scene, delivering a climax that's a blasting cap on a short fuse, ready to detonate a reporter's world.

Good as a Novel or as a Thriller.......2005-11-03
Disappointing.......2004-05-17
The newspaper setting rings true, as Marklund has obvious experience in that area. Some of the characters are quite well drawn, and they are the most interesting part of the book for me. Some of the expositions about the way things work in Sweden are belaboured, but nevertheless informative. However, in a novel, a better author would find a more naturalistic style of imparting information rather than through a mini-lecture style exposition.
Unfortunately, for me, the language is flat and rather leaden. This may be the result of translation. A few things jar (for example Annika going round to the `back side of the building' - rather than the back. )
Other times it is a preoccupation with minute and unnecessary detail, which adds nothing to the story or characterisation:
" She walked over to her office and suddenly realized she was starving. She went over to Berit and asked if she'd like to go to the staff canteen. She did, so they picked up their coupons and set off. They were serving Christmas ham with potatoes and apple sauce tonight . . .
They skipped the ham and chose the salad bar instead. The big canteen was almost empty, and they took a table in the corner."
A whole lot of unnecessary words that add no value at all.
A worthy read..........2003-11-27
The Madd Bomber.......2003-01-24
The story of the bomber unfolds around pending Olympic Games to be held in Stockholm and; in particular, the life of the managing director. The author has done an outstanding job of making her characters very realistic. Indeed, one is most certainly able to identify with their day to day struggles. As I do with all books I have enjoyed, I dreaded finishing it; while at the same time I found myself unable to put it down. It was very gripping and intense to say the least.
DON'T MISS THIS ONE...SPECTACULAR.......2001-07-31
Just a few days before Christmas, a bomb rips through the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm Sweden, killing the head of the Olympic Organizing Committee. In the media frenzy that follows, insistent crime tabloid reporter Annika Bengtzon uses shrewd investigation skills to keep her newspaper a step ahead of the competition. As she deftly unravels the layers of an apparent cover up, Annika finds a source within the police department who tells her that this was not the act of a deranged terrorist group as many have thought; but rather a cold-blooded execution designed by one lone murderer. Annika becomes completely consumed by the story, and in the process neglects her husband and small children. The plot goes into warp drive as she simultaneously juggles the high demands of her family life with the increasing stress of her male-dominated editorial job, and the looming threat of a malicious, cold-blooded assassin bent on making her his next victim.
THE BOMBER is a spectacular debut novel that focuses on investigative reporting and the increasing demands placed on working mothers. While the suspense may not be as calculating as other more well known bestsellers, it certainly works within the framework of the storyline. The only aspect of the novel which presented more of a mystery to me than the identity of the bomber is inclusion of a few "letters" intermittently dispersed throughout the book covering topics such as love, lies, humanity, happiness, etc. (what was THAT all about???????)
4 stars. Although the mystery gets light treatment and the puzzle is not very challenging, the translation by Kajsa Von Hofsen is superbly written.

Bretall also avoids chopping up chapters and ripping quips and humorous digressions or controversial statements out of their context. For the most part he presents key chapters in their entirety and helps to reproduce their context for the reader either by explaining it in his helpful introductions or by presenting enough chapters from a given work that the context of a particular chapter is clear.
Understanding Kierkegaard's context and that of his writings and that of the chapters within them is so crucial to fruitful engagement of his ideas that this compiled tornado of thought that Bretall provides is the best place to start reading him.
But then again, I could be bias because that's how I started reading him...

Time to Move On.......2004-04-28
An example: I've learned via Japanese language that it is important to address fundamentals first, such as enunciating and writing an unfamiliar alphabet. Alas, charts and tables in this book do not provide these options, and it appears the author assumes one has a basic understanding of the Greek language. In short, presupposition reigns. Interestingly, I can see how this text would also be pedantic for the intermediate user, making me wonder at what level one might benefit from this book.
I wish I could recommend an alternative, but I'm in the throes of discovering that myself. Onward...

Solid Manual on Modern Greek.......2000-04-19
I have been using this book to relearn Greek, having been away from it since childhood, and have found it to be a great self-study tool, better than others more recently published.
It is not a text for the faint of heart. It is a University level text. It is a no nonsense text that teaches the essentials of modern Greek in 400 or so pages

Brilliant from Bjørneboe........2002-10-26
As you travel to the small Italian village in the district of Torre Rosse you get to know the hunters and the bird-lovers You meet Caruso, Rosa, Piccolino, Cavalli, Marco, Fidele and Sandro. They are the partsans who fought against the Germans during the war, and who suffered because of it. Thus when the German bird-lovers come to form a paradise for the birds they do what they can to stop them and bring the old judge to justice.
It's a play about capitalism, racism, injustice and women's rights, and frankly it is one of the finest plays ever written. If you're in need of quotations to use of any occasion this is the play. Any remark'll do. And the poetry is amazing. I guess "Song to Hiroshima" is the most known one but the rest is great as well.
As I said. It is a great play and we really enjoyed putting it on. It gave us something, still 30/40 years after it was written. Enjoy.
