5 out of 5 stars Really helped my 2.5 year old deal with his asthma.......2007-06-06

My son is 2.5 and recently diagnosed with reactive airway disease. He really enjoys this book, and it has helped us talk to him about his breathing. Sometimes we ask him if he feels like the lion or if the lion is scared. It also seems to help when he doesn't want to use his nebulizer.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2004-08-28

My son developed asthma at 7 months of age after being hospitalized with RSV. He is now only 1 years old, but does enjoy this book as much as a 1 year old can. The reason I bought it was for my 3 year old who had many questions about why his little brother had to have breathing treatments, wasn't feeling well, etc. This book was perfect. Not too medical in it's terms, adorable illustrations, lovely story line about using fantasy to make treatments better. I can't wait until my 1 year old is old enough to really enjoy and understand it. I highly recommend it for parents of asthmatics, or any one with young children who are around other children with asthma.

5 out of 5 stars The Lion who had Asthma.......2002-08-08

This is a great book to help kids with Asthma realize that breathing treatments with a nebulizer are not always fun -- but they can turn it into fun just like the boy in the book. My daughter had a different view of the required breathing treatments after reading this book. We were lucky enough to come across it at our local library but Santa might just have to bring it for Christmas this year!

4 out of 5 stars Very Cute.......2002-03-15

This is a cute story. My son was recently diagnosed with asthma. While he doesn't have to be on an inhaler nebulizer at this time, he does hate what asthma does to him. He has to stop running and wait until his medicine starts to work. We are able to read this book and talk a little about asthma (He's 2) and about what it means for him. This book is a great one for reassuring little kids that they are ok, that others have this, and that soon they can play again.

The only reason I rated this a four instead of a five is that I think the text is a little stilted at times.

5 out of 5 stars Grrr-eat!.......2001-12-30

I was so happy to find this book to read to my 2 year old! He doesn't like the nebulizer mask and any picture with a child wearing one helps. A story of a little boy just like him is the icing on the cake! The simple facial expressions help my son relate to the feelings he has.

    Book Description

"I'm no different than any other kid. I'm just a GF kid," says Paris, matter-of-factly. She's the spunky eleven-year-old narrator of this story for kids with celiac disease who must eat gluten-free (GF) foods. With equal parts humor and directness, Paris* gets right down to business explaining what it's like to have celiac disease. (*Paris's mom wrote the story, full of her daughter's wisecracking comments, and her dad drew the funny, cartoony illustrations.)

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects 1 in 250 kids. If you have celiac disease, you cannot tolerate gluten, a substance found in many foods, including--gulp!--cake, cookies, pasta, or pizza. Don't sweat it. Paris has creative GF solutions for you. She offers tips on what to bring to school, parties, and sleep-overs; where to shop for GF foods at stores and online; and how to choose from among plenty of foods that don't contain gluten, like bananas, yogurt, popcorn, chocolate pudding cups, hamburgers, soda, and more! Paris explains that you don't have to worry about your friends either. They'll get on board once they understand that eating even a tiny bit of gluten can make you sick, tired, or slow your growth.

In THE GF KID, you'll find everything you need to know to get on with your gluten-free life, including:

What celiac disease is and how you can manage it
How to choose safe, gluten-free foods and what to avoid
Lists of gluten-free foods (and candy!)
Tips for eating away from home (restaurants, school, friends' homes, the movies)
Keeping your gluten-free stuff separate from gluteny stuff
    Favorite GF recipes

If you're the parent of a preteen or young teen with celiac disease—-whether your child is newly diagnosed or has been living with celiac disease for a while—-you'll want to have this friendly and empowering book for your child. It's also a great read for friends, neighbors, classmates, and teachers who want to be supportive and help your son or daughter be a GF kid.

5 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Celiac Reference Book.......2007-09-18

The GF Kid: A Celiac Disease Survival Guide is our favorite reference book for Celiac Disease. We have two children with Celiac Disease. My eight year old was diagnosed right before she started second grade. I sent the book in to school and her teacher read it to the class so that the teacher and students could better understand my daughter's condition and what she can and cannot eat. (Her third grade teacher is currently reading it as well).

It's a quick read - the only book my husband has read about Celiac - and it's very informative. I am purchasing my second copy so that I always have a spare. I plan to send this book to my newly diagnosed daughter's daycare.

I also send the book along when my daughter visits a new friend's house so that the parents can understand her condition and what she can and cannot eat. There are great drawings and examples of wonderful GF lunches and snacks.

I highly recommend this book to any parent with children with Celiac.

5 out of 5 stars Very Fun and Very Educational.......2007-01-10

My nine-year-old neice has celiac disease. I borrowed the book from the library first, and then bought it when I found it so informative for adults, and so much fun for kids. It is presented in quasi-comic book format, with a young teen girl narrating about what it's like to have celiac disease. Mostly she explains what she can and can't eat, and how she handles eating at her friends' houses, eating out, and not being "different" when she's different. I figured Jessie knew all these things, but the book would be a good vehicle for her to explain to her friends in a very easily explained way, about why she eats a little differently than they do.

I copied several pages of information for my own reference before giving it to her. The narrating character lists many natural foods she can eat, and many commercial foods she can eat. There are also pages of websites for more information, and sources for gluten free products. I would consider this a must-buy for a gluten free kid. Thank you to author Melissa London, this was a brilliant book, delivering exactly what we needed.

    5 out of 5 stars Doesn't just help kids..........2006-11-10

This book really relates to kids with celiac disease. It breaks it down and spells it out in terms they can relate to. My twin grandsons were diagnosed and this not only helped them, but all the adults, understand the new lifestyle they were embarking on. Thanks to the author and her parents for all the great information.

5 out of 5 stars The GF Kid: A Celiac Disease Survival Guide.......2006-11-10

This book is an easy to read, amusing, positive, informative book to help all those with Celiac and their family and friends understand the dietary lifestyle needed to manage Celiac. It was a great guide for my daughter to take to her college dorm to help her roommates and new friends understand her diet and condition. The illustrations are very amusing. I would also recommend this book for teachers or school counselors to help them and other students easily understand the basics of managing Celiac Disease.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2006-03-26

My 9year old son found this book brillant he could really associate with it and found it very informative and funny.

3 out of 5 stars Some useful information, but severely lacking in many areas.......2006-05-29

I bought this book after accepting a job in London in 2005. After living in London for several months, I can now reflect on my relocation experience and say that this book only provided me with limited guidance.

This book attempts to provide a grand overview on the challenges that expatriates will face when they relocate to London. The book does present a broad overview of the many things expatriates need to do when relocating to London. For example, it does thoroughly explain the work permit and visa process, and it gives plenty of information on setting up utilities in a new home. It also provides some warnings about situations unique to London, such as the viscious, unregulated real estate market, and it provides some tourism information as well.

Additionally, the book provides multiple comparisons of the London boroughs, and the first section of the book provides summary information on each one. However, the summaries are frequently too short to provide a good overview of some of the more diverse boroughs, and some of the criticisms are overly harsh (as they were for Hammersmith and Fulham).

The book has a few major faults. The greatest major fault is that it fails to provide vital information needed for relocation. It does not explain how to solve the permanent housing / bank account / job paradox (where, to acquire one of these things, an individual must already have the other two). This alone significantly weakens the book. However, the book also does not provide information on other things as well. For example, it explains nothing about acquiring a credit card or building up a credit rating in the United Kingdom (which can be frustratingly difficult for a U.S. citizen). It provided some information on dentists, but it did not explain how to sign up with a dentist. It also does not explain U.K. taxes, which are very different from U.S. taxes. While this book does provide information on shopping, the shopping information is oriented towards tourists with high incomes, not residents with low or mid-level incomes.

Aside from the lack of information on important topics in this book, I also dislike it for already being out-of-date (or unfairly biased), even though it was published in 2004. Some of the criticisms of some boroughs are already out-of-date, possibly biased by older impressions from the last century. Many websites suggested by the book either have not been updated for months or are not functional. Also, the transportation information is woefully obsolete, as the Underground in particular has changed (and improved) significantly since the book's publication. I can only imagine that many sections of the book that I have not examined closely also provide dated information.

In conclusion, I would only recommend this book as a supplement to London relocation information rather than as a prime source of information. It simply fails to answer many crucial questions (especially questions about the residence/banking/job paradox), and too much of the information either seems biased or obsolete.

5 out of 5 stars help I want to move to London. .......2007-02-06

This book is fantastic if you have decided to move to London on a whim and lack the support structure of either a company or study abroad program to help you through the transition. It gives you all the details about how to go about putting together a life having stepped off a plane with only a suitcase, finding a place to sleep immediately and in the long term, a job, etc. It also allowed me to do a lot of the research and legwork before I arrived for example pick a cellphone company and plan when I didn't even know which cellphone companies there were in the U.K. prior to reading it. It really IS the London Bible.

4 out of 5 stars Aimed at young singles, but a fun read for anyone moving to London.......2006-08-18

This is a well written, informative and funny guide to London, but we felt it was aimed at a younger demographic (we are in our early 30s, with a family). There is lots of information on where to eat, shop and drink, but not as much practical info as some other books. But the descriptions of neighbourhoods were great, and much more in depth and seemingly of a Londoner's prospective than some of the more dry guides. The fact that it is written by Canadians was nice too, they mentioned some things that only people coming from North Amerca would care wbout, the UK writers don't have the same perspective on space for example!
I would highly recommend this for young singles, but not as much for older professionals or families, because of the emphasis on nightlife, etc. But it is still an excellent supplement to another relocating guide.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely worthless for a family planning to relocate.......2005-07-15

As noted by some of the other reviewers, this book is not geared for anyone with a family who's planning to relocate to London, but instead for the 20-something, single, partying crowd.

For instance, the Education chapter concentrates on college or continuing education for adults, without nary a mention on schools for children. Likewise, the neighbourhood descriptions don't even try to mention what they are like for families, instead concentrating in describing their restaurants, pubs and other nightlife options.

Several of the neighbourhoods are described as "expensive" or "posh", and the authors don't shy in saying that "you probably will not afford to live there". Why then waste valuable book space on them??? They should instead have concentrated on describing those areas where normal people (i.e. non-millionaires) will actually end up living!!!

It seems like this book is geared for those looking to have a "Sex In The City" lifestyle. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I found its title to be deceiving. After all, when you dare to call your book a "Bible" to something you should go to great lenghts to make sure it is as inclusive as possible. I definitely found it to be a waste of money; as a matter of fact, this was the first book I purchased at Amazon that I ever felt compelled to return (and I've purchased over 200 books here).

For those adults who are planning a move to London (married or not, with children or childless) I recommend "Living and Working in Britain, Fifth Edition : A Survival Handbook", by David Hampshire. It is full of information that actually helps in planning such a move and allows you to know how to settle in London or anywhere else in Britain.

5 out of 5 stars This book really helped me to find my feet in London!.......2005-02-15

I arrived in London six months ago and to say that I was overwhelmed at first was an understatement. Luckily, during my first week at a hostel in Earls Court, a fellow novice to London recommended The London Bible to me. This guide seemed to be aimed directly at me, at 26 year old who wanted to settle in London and really make the most of my time here.
I had purchased one of the usual backpacker guides before arriving, but what I really needed was information on settling in London, not just passing through.
The London Bible begins with THE BASICS, chapters that concisely and clearly explain all you need to know about 1) ACCOMMODATION (how letting agencies work, types of properties, postcode areas, council tax, bills, bond etc...) 2) RECRUITMENT AND MONEY (jobs, agencies, C.V.s, salaries, tax, how to open a bank account etc...) 3) TRANSPORT (how to navigate the tube!, fares, travelcards, buses, taxis etc...) 4) HEALTH (how to sign up with a doctor, how the NHS works, prescriptions, dentists etc...) 5) EDUCATION (universities, colleges, financial support, overseas students, language schools etc...) 6) COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA (getting a telephone & cell phone, newspapers, TV and the dreaded TV license etc...) 7) SHOPPING (where, what, sizes, budget shopping, cheap haircuts etc...) and then a few chapters on some other basics. I was very, very pleased with these sections as I just wanted to know easily how to do things. It's tough arriving in London - you have no idea where to start just to get a doctor. But this book says in plain and simple terms exactly what you should do. About a third of the book is devoted to all of this, yet it isn't rambling. Just a bit of background and then what to do to sort yourself out. Perfect. Exactly what I needed.

The second section of the book is...ENTERTAINMENT! Arriving in London was daunting - with so many clubs, bars, and places to go out I had no idea where to start at first. Luckily the book told me about the best clubs to try, where to go to see bands/theatre/galleries/soccer etc... I'm enamored with all the history of London. Now I know where to go to drink in Charles Dickens' favourite pub (and where his favourite seat was!), I know which underground club has seen Muddy Waters, the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, and the White Stripes all grace the stage and now hosts all manner of up-and-coming bands.

The third section of the book, AREAS, was extremely helpful when I started looking for somewhere to live after the youth hostel. London is massive. Looking at the listings for flatshares I had no idea what was a good or bad area and the book was very helpful with this. It gives an overview of the major areas and describes the differences (ie. Hoxton is trendy and bohemian, the City is dead at the weekends, and Hampstead is posh and leafy). Reading through the Areas chapters I was able to decide which neighborhoods I wanted to live in and then center my flatshare searches to those places. The added bonus of having the best pubs, bars, and restaurants per area was great.

This book really helped me to settle in easily, move to a cool flatshare in a neighborhood that I love, get a job in the media thanks to the agency listing, and to discover some fantastic bars and clubs.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone trying to settle into London.

    5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2005-02-14

I'd recommend this book to anyone who's going to London or the UK to work. I went over on a Working Holiday Visa with no idea of where I wanted to live or how to even start looking for work, but when I found this book, it made life heaps easier. The guide is written by two young writers in a really witty, funny style.

It helped me find a job as a secretary in the city and an apartment living with a couple of cool English girls, so if you're planning on moving to London to experience the culture or lifestyle, this is a great book. They have a huge section on nightlife as well as all the practical info like looking for a job, paying tax, the price of transport and all that necessary info. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

In the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs, Nicci French, bestselling author of Beneath the Skin and The Red Room, delivers what promises to be the psychological blockbuster of the season. Kidnapped, gagged, and held in an airless shed by some unknown assailant, Abbie Devereaux has somehow managed to survive her ordeal and escape. Now no one seems to believe her, including the police who found her bruised and beaten in a run-down neighborhood outside London, and the psychologists who interview her in the hospital. Even worse, Abbie can't remember anything immediately prior to her abduction, so there's no one to corroborate her story. Determined to prove that she's not "making this all up," as one inspector suggests, Abbie sets out to retrace her steps--and comes face-to-face with a very real psycho-killer. Only this time, she refuses to be his victim.

Abbie Devereaux was threatened, gagged, kidnapped, starved, and imprisoned in an airless shed before she escaped her unknown captor. The trouble is, no one seems to believe her: Not the police who find her bruised and beaten on the front steps of a run-down housing project on the outskirts of London; not the psychologists who interview her as she recovers in the hospital. Abbie doesn't remember most of the events that happened prior to her abduction, so there's little to corroborate her story. But Abbie is determined to put the fragments of her life in order and to discover what happened to her. Still, everywhere she goes, she is shocked to find evidence of the chaos of her previous life: she had moved out of her boyfriend's apartment; she had lost her job as an office planner; and she had moved in with a roommate who has since completely disappeared. Who can she trust? And where will she go? She's beginning to wonder if Detective Inspector Jack Cross is right and she's been making this all up as her life has been disintegrating. But Abbie knows that she can't get on with her life until she knows what has happened.

1 out of 5 stars The narrator RUINS this story.......2007-07-17

After slogging through 3 cassettes in the car, I have given up on this promising story....why? Because the narrator is SO TERRIBLY ANNOYING! I could barely concentrate on the story because of her voice and dramatizations. The story was just "good" for me, too. Can't believe all the fantastic reviews.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-03-16

This was a pretty good book but the ending was kind of a let down in that it really wasn't very dramatic. The climax was just kind of ho-hum, we got that over with. On the plus side, this novel really did hold my interest throughtout. I thought I figured out who the bad guy was but was wrong...Way off in fact. Truth is there is no way to know who the bad guy is ahead of time. I guess that kind of takes the mystery out of it a bit. I did like reading a mystery/thriller in the first person. It seemed to make it more intense even if some of the language was a little hard to believe. (some of Abbie's personal thoughts)The characters seemed pretty believable and I would for sure read more works by Nicci French. In fact, I may order a couple more right now.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST PSYCHOLOGICAL MYSTERY NOVELIST NICCI FRENCH WAS THE AUTHOR OF KILLING ME SOFTLY .......2006-04-01

Abbie Devereaux lies flat on her back, her arms and legs tied down, her head covered with a hood. She sense the eyes that watch her. She feels the unknown hands that touch her in the dark. She knows she has been kidnapped. And she knows that somehow she must stay alive, even though everything she is experiencing tells her she won't.

Miraculously, she escapes. One nightmare is over...but another is about to begin.

Her momories of the recent past--where she lives, whether she has a job, where she stand with her boyfriend--are oddly out of synch with reality, her normal, everyday life in "the land of the living." As the authorities question her credibility, Abbie can't help but wonder if there is a connection between the facts she has forgotten and the kidnapping itself.

Now there's only one way to reclaim both her mind and her life--and stop a monstrous psycho-killer. She must dare to retrace her steps to the place where all the horror began.

A masterful achievement of brilliantly etched characters and harrowing suspense, LAND OF THE LIVING will shock you at every turn...and force you to walk the fine line between madness and fear.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked from the beginning!.......2006-02-24

From the first sentence I knew I had to continue reading. Creative, thrilling. I stayed up till the wee hours with this one. I love Nicci French books and this one's my favorite.

    3 out of 5 stars A chilling suspense.......2006-02-05

Abigail Devereaux seems to be in the middle of a nightmare. There is a taste of metal in her mouth, there are restraints all over her body, she's lying on a stretcher and she can only move her head. Is she in a hospital? Was she reported missing? She can't shout because there is a cloth in her mouth. But after hearing a male voice telling her to be quiet, Abbie understands that she is the man's captive. He could starve her, rape her, torture her or kill her. Will Abbie be able to escape and return to the land of the living? If she does, will her kidnapper try to find her again?
This thriller has it all: chilling scenes, good twists, a believable plot and a charming heroin.

Kids who go to the doctor for a routine checkup shouldn't worry too much. Unless they accidentally throw a paper airplane ("zwish!") into the doctor's eye. Or forget to wear underwear. ("Oops!") Or kick the doctor in the chin when she's testing knee reflexes with a little rubber hammer. ("Clack!") The beloved Froggy is his usual out-of-control self in Dr. Mugwort's office, and preschoolers pondering an impending doctor visit will be relieved to know it won't be too bad, might be fun, and could even involve a gold star or a lollipop. Jonathan London and illustrator Frank Remkiewicz disarm their young readers with giggles in books from Froggy Learns to Swim to Froggy Goes to School. Froggy's silly sound effects and slapstick antics guarantee a lively read-aloud. If laughter is indeed the best medicine, it's good to have a little Froggy on hand. (Preschool and older) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

Froggy is going to the doctor for a checkup, and heÂ's feeling a little nervous. “What if the doctor wants to give me a shot?” he thinks. He worries as he dresses and then he canÂ't sit still in the waiting room. Finally, itÂ's time to go in and change for his exam, but . . . OOOPS! HeÂ's forgotten his underwear! And thatÂ's just the beginning of FroggyÂ's hilarious doctor visit that ends reassuringly with a gold star and a lollipop.

    1 out of 5 stars Ugh!.......2007-07-16

I have a few Froggy books and can't stand them. (Got them orignially because my daughter loved frogs.) They have awkward text (ie: the augthor calls a saxophone a "sax" & I object to using slang at this young of an age; kids should learn the full word)and some of the messages are just strange as in this one where the doctor teases Froggy by making him think he's going to get a shot (and he's been worrying about whether he was going to get one or not already)-- she pulls out a needle, then says no, she was kidding. Yikes! Why in the world would a kid need to worry that the doctor is going to scare him with a shot??!! It's tough enough that at this age they are getting so many shots! I don't need a book telling my kid she should be afraid. There are so many other good books that I honestly wouldn't (and don't) waste my money on this series. I think they are poorly written in every respect. I don't recommend this or any of the Froggy books to anyone. While the kids do seem to like them, I think they won't be missing anything if these books don't make it to your book shelf.

    5 out of 5 stars My Son's Favorite.......2007-05-09

We have read a lot of Froggy books, but this is by far my son's favorite. He laughs out loud every time we read it. He first heard it at school, so we normally borrow them from the library, but this one we had to add to our "library". It's very funny and great for kid's who are nervous about doctor visits.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER KID FAVORITE.......2006-12-15

I am much like another reviewer here (Nelson). I do not really care all that much for the froggy books myself, this one included. BUT...the kids all love them! I have yet to find one young child that did not what this and the other Froggy Book read to them over and over and over again. This, as the other reviewer pointed out, is what counts. I must say though that I found this particular book rather good in helping children understand the process of going to the doctor. Most of them do fear it, just like Froggy, and this work points out the fact that most of these fears are rather unnecessary. I like that. Recommend this one.

    3 out of 5 stars Hide it!.......2004-05-11

This book was a gift to our daughter (nearly three). She loved the Froggy Goes to Bed book and I defended Froggy's misbehavior because that book kept her attention and was a favorite. However, Froggy Goes to the Doctor went beyond our line. Our daughter has never feared the doctor. After her two year check up she had to have blood drawn. She didn't flinch, and afterward she said she had "fun". I am very cautious that she does not "learn" to be afraid of doctors. I am less concerned about Froggy's misbehavior as I am about his fear of getting a shot. We hid the book, out of sight out of mind...

5 out of 5 stars If You Like Froggy Books, This is One of the Better Ones.......2003-10-08

I feel a little sheepish giving this 5 stars. Frankly, I don't much care for the Froggy series. Here's the truth, though - it doesn't matter what I think. My 5-year-old loves all the Froggy books, and they serve as great motivators for him to continue learning to read.

I'd recommend this book over most of the other Froggy books. Froggy's misbehavior is (thankfully) not a major topic here, and the book conveys a useful lesson about doctors. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great for serious tourists or future London residents.......2000-07-06

This is a great book for those who either want to discover human side of London (as opposed to tourist one) or just consider moving there.

First, it has a good account of central neighbourhoods (villages) with lively essays about each of them. These essays are not dry, yet informative. They are in no sense complete research, but instead give you a good feeling about diversity of London.

Second, this is one of few books that provide an inside look at Londoner's everyday life: parks and gardens, interiors, places to meet and socialize, and, as a bonus, chapter about places for men (clubs, shops, pubs).

Third, Visitor's Guide section provides you with useful addresses and phone numbers, though it is in no way complete or comprehensive.

Fourth, photographs are very good, numerous and thoroughly selected which, combined with high quality of printing, gives you a very pleasant reading (or even glancing) experience.

One word of warning: authors seem to be too much affiliated with Terence Conran, famous British designer, therefore you should view their opinions about his work (development, design etc) with a grain of salt (that's why I gave this book 4 stars, not 5).

Overall, the book is a worthy possession for those who like London and want to know more. I would even recommend it to locals. I wish I had equivalent book for Seattle.

1 out of 5 stars I wish Tricia Guild would get out of town!.......2002-12-12

I was not impressed with this book, and I like color. The text was not useful. If there are no tips or they are not informative, I will still buy a book if it has beautiful pictures. However, I was not creatively inspired by this book. I think the design choices are boring. I'm glad I did not buy this book.

    Other resource:
Another of Tricia Guild's books titled Think Color is so much better. Her bold use of color in this book is both refreshing and inspiring.

    5 out of 5 stars a challenge.......2000-03-26

BEAUTIFUL! , this book encouraged me to transform my old house without necessarily changing the beauty of it. Tricia Guild made me dare to bring new colors to my house and giving my family a bright place to live. THEY LOVED IT! .

    5 out of 5 stars Delicious book.......1998-07-28

Much better than her other books in her use of bold, imaginative color. Not for the timid. Don't worry about the urban bit, good design is welcome everywhere :-)
