Book Description
Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design workÂuntil now.
Universal Principles of Design is the first cross-disciplinary reference of design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, this book pairs clear explanations of the design concepts featured with visual examples of those concepts applied in practice. From the 80/20 rule to chunking, from baby-face bias to Ockham's razor, and from self-similarity to storytelling, 100 design concepts are defined and illustrated for readers to expand their knowledge.
This landmark reference will become the standard for designers, engineers, architects, and students who seek to broaden and improve their design expertise.

full of info...dry, but usefull........2007-09-18
This reminded me of an old textbook, having very few visual examples and loads of text. That said I have found it a good read with more information than other similar design books. It is a good book to grasp the whole spread of design.
Key Priciples for Every Designer.......2007-09-11
I loved this book for its illustrations, organization & its selection of principles. It covers pivotal ideas from visual design, interaction design, industrial engineering, an communications design & cross-references each principle to related principles & sources for further exploration. It's hard to image a professional in any design field that would appreciate this uniquely valuable & enjoyable reference.
Resource Supreme.......2007-09-10
This book has great visual examples of the concepts in design. Designers, teachers and commercial art directors should have it on a shelf near by.
No big secrets in this book.......2007-07-22
This book does have some useful and interesting principals of design. However most any person who is thoughtful and careful in designing a human interface will figure these things out without this book. In fact a fair percentage of the principals discussed are painfully obvious to anyone.
One of the Best Books in my Library.......2007-07-19
This is an invaluable resource for any designer. Well-organized and easy to read, with a multitude of cross-references. One of the best values I've come across in recent years.

Book Description
A quick and reliable way to build proven databases for core business functions
Industry experts raved about The Data Model Resource Book when it was first published in March 1997 because it provided a simple, cost-effective way to design databases for core business functions. Len Silverston has now revised and updated the hugely successful First Edition, while adding a companion volume to take care of more specific requirements of different businesses. Each volume is accompanied by a CD-ROM, which is sold separately. Each CD-ROM provides powerful design templates discussed in the books in a ready-to-use electronic format, allowing companies and individuals to develop the databases they need at a fraction of the cost and a third of the time it would take to build them from scratch.
Updating the data models from the First Edition CD-ROM, this resource allows database developers to quickly load a core set of data models and customize them to support a wide range of business functions.
Customer Reviews:
A "Must-Have" For Every Modeling Job.......2006-10-04
Silverston's books (volume 1 and volume 2) are a "must-have" for any data modeler at the onset of a new project. The books are nicely organized by subject-area (for example, "People and Organizations" or "Human Resources" or "Health Care") and the table-of-contents and indicies are rich and very helpful. You can use these books as your main reference books for every question, meeting, inquiry regarding your modeling work (ex: "why did you model currency in this way?" Or "How do you model vendor and client relationships?".
The book saves me a lot of time. In an essence, you can use the book as a great starting point for your modeling work. Simply use the book to quickly create a "straw man" version of a certain subject-area, customize it to your enterprise's needs, and start "throwing scenarios" at the model in ordre to "break it". You will be able to spend less time on the "mechanics of modeling" and more time thinking through how your model supports the real business needs of your organization.
The Resource Book is just that.......2006-02-25
We ordered this book because we are about to begin designing a new information system for our company. Silverston's book addresses many of the issues we found ourselves wrestling with (in designing the CRM portion of the system for instance), and it presents options with the pros and cons of each.
Two surprises I didn't like.......2005-10-25
The text of this book was generally good - although it seemed padded out with a massive listing of model metadata. The book comes with a CD. The first surprise was, the CD does not include the Data Definition Language (DDL) for its sample models... there's an extra cost for that. My question to the publisher would be, what good is the CD you provide for free?
The second surprise is the illustrations. There are plenty of them, but they look like they were done in a primitive graphics package - not in an enterprise modeling tool. They author seems to have invented his own wierd set of conventions, including "foreign keys do not appear in the entities... that is duplicate information". Before you buy this book, take a look at the illustrations of the models. If you can live with the notation, maybe consider buying it.
Good, but sometimes a little too "kitchen sink".......2005-10-22
I like this book. It definitely saves a lot of time and mistakes while data modelling which is one thing you better get right in your app as data migration to a new model both at the app and database level is often a time consuming and bug prone process.
That being said the locked cd is a nuisance and sometimes the data model becomes almost ridiculously detailed. For instance in one part of the book the author talks about extending the person data model to include things such as the history of the person's gender (for instance if they had multiple sex changes). I have seen a lot of overbuilt data models that had lots of entities that were rarely used and contributed to a significant amount of clutter and generally overwhelmed developers with useless details and planning for corner cases that never happened.
Encapsulates lots of practitioner experience to jumpstart modeling.......2005-08-18
I got both the volumes 2 years back. I found the concepts really useful and have applied the modeling constructs to actual engagements in supply chain, corporate banking and travel industry. Especially the "party-role-transaction" construct . It is truly a liberating data modeling construct to apply across industry. The models are also at the right level of abstraction. It elegantly positioned in between 2 modeling extremes ... It is neither too abstract/conceptual nor too specific and detailed to one implementation ... a balance which is typically very difficult to maintain . One word of caution on expectation ... the objective is to treat these models as a starting point for your specific projects. It need not be the only way to model a business scenario. But the book opens the modelers mind upto possibilities which one typically tends to ignore and that is the key! Because often times these "outlier scenarios" tend to come and haunt the architecture once realized physically on a database and is often a painful process to modify. Lens varied experience highlights some specific "land mines" to watch for in modeling these scenarios which has helped me in my projects. In a nut shell I have found the book to express in a concise manner the essential elements of modeling to watch out for

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any bead collector!.......2007-06-27
A wonderful and very desciptive history of beads. Excellent quality photos, this book can used to help the novice or the serious bead collector.
Excellent photos, difficult reading.......2006-01-16
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.
Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners.......2000-10-29
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector. Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide. The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. I'm returning the book and continuing the search.
A stunning work of art........2000-07-22
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist. This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful. For bead lovers it's a definative work. As a scholarly piece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in art history and world culture as well. It's an important book and one that would be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as one who's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for them when they were no longer available...get this one now. You won't regret it.
An outstanding and invaluable book for all bead lovers.......1998-03-18
Robert K. Liu is one of the foremost authorities today in the field of collectible beads. In this book he gives clear and succinct insight regarding collectible beads from all over the world. In some cases he gives approximate monetary values, but the book is mostly a celebration by someone who knows as to the place which beads have played in cultures around the world from ancient times to the present. A necessary help for anyone who collects or is thinking of collecting beads. It will save time and money.

Book Description
Destined to become the defining work on the subject, this timely reference addresses the single fastest growing segment of the senior living industry -- assisted living for those who are unable to live independently but who do not need intensive nursing home care, meals, housekeeping, or twenty-four hour access to medical assistance. Victor Regniers visually rich guide includes dozens of design solutions from successful assisted living facilities along with fifteen case studies from the U.S. and Europe. The book also covers recent developments in the industry including major changes in financing, growth of dementia, and interest in aging-in-place. All in all, this is the most comprehensive guide to assisted living design that you'll find in any single volume.
Customer Reviews:
Designing for Seniors - includes European & USA.......2006-12-30
This is an amazing book because it includes design considerations that are European and American. Northern Europe has a definite view of the aging population that is very different than that of Americans. Much more focused on wellness, physical activity, landscape as part of healing, maximizing the aging process. This book also includes American facilities that are more focused on creating a HOME for elders. Wonderful photos too. Comment made that senior residences are designed for the daughters (those who make the decision) rather than for the residents. This gives you ideas on how to change that issue... for the positive. Very good resource book.

Loaded with info.......2006-02-17
This book is a quality overview covering most facets of long term care facility development. As with any broad coverage, there will be information that does not apply to your project, and areas that you will need other sources to complete the picture. But the authors of this book know their stuff.
Written by architects and planners for same; but accessible to the lay reader. A good tool for those interested in developing long term care facilities and senior-oriented communities.

A Practical Reader in Universal Design for Learning
ASIN: 0871205998 |
Book Description
As a teacher in a typical classroom, there are two things you know for sure: Your students have widely divergent needs, skills, and interests . . . and you're responsible for helping every one attain the same high standards.
This book is the first comprehensive presentation of the principles and applications of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)--a practical, research-based framework for responding to individual learning differences and a blueprint for the modern redesign of education.
The first part of Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age lays out the foundation of UDL, including neuroscience research on learner differences, the effective uses of new digital media in the classroom, and how insights about students who do not "fit the mold" can inform the creation of flexible curricula that help everyone learn more effectively. The second part of the book addresses UDL's practical applications--how UDL principles can help you
*Set appropriate goals for every student.
*Choose the methods and materials that give every student optimum instructional support.
*Ensure the fair and accurate assessment of every student's progress.
Along with references to digital tools and links to online resources, the authors provide a set of templates to facilitate classroom implementation of UDL, share the experience of a school district already succeeding with UDL, and highlight plans for UDL implementation on a national scale.
David H. Rose and Anne Meyer are the founders and co-directors of the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), a not-for-profit organization that uses technology to expand opportunities for all people, including those with disabilities.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully Applicable.......2006-02-23
This book was required for a Master's class taken at U of I (IL). It will open your eyes as a teacher. I especially enjoyed the section that discusses Universal Design for Learning. The applictions were very practical. For those wanting to incorporate technology into their lesson plans, this book is for you. It focuses on how to do so for students of all learning types. A great reference book for the future.
A Must-Read.......2004-04-21
This book is a must-read for teachers and administrators faced with the demands of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation. NCLB requires that all children progress in the general curriculum. Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age lays the theoretical groundwork and offers practical examples and recommendations on how digital technologies can be used to break down barriers to learning that impair the performance of many students.
Authors Rose and Meyer cite two converging dynamics at play that are helping eliminate such barriers: one is the discoveries of neural science that explain the great diversity in student learning; the other is the growth in digital technologies. As they see it, digitization makes possible a rich array of media that are beginning to match the complex of ways that students learn and express that learning.
Rose and Meyer urge material developers to follow principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Just as buildings today are designed to be accessible to all, without added ramps, so say the authors, educational materials should be created without barriers to content. If type is a barrier, alternative routes to content (such as audio, enlarged type, or shifts in foreground and background color) can and should be provided.
As I noted, this book has an excellent balance between theory and practice. It is supported by a rich Web site (http://www.cast.org/teachingeverystudent) and would make an excellent text for pre-service or in-service programs.

Book Description
Major progress has been made in the field of driveshafts since the authors presented their first edition of this unique reference work. Correspondingly, major revisions have been done for second edition of the German Textbook (Springer 2003), which is present here in the English translation. The presentation was adjusted, novel improvements of manufacturing and design are described, and modern aspects of production are incorporated. The design and application of Hookeâs joint driveshafts is discussed as well as constant velocity joints for the construction of agricultural engines, road and rail vehicles. This work can be used as a textbook as well as a reference for practitioners, scientists, and students dealing with drive technology.
