Good photography & beautiful room settings,it makes you wish for more. The curtain/drapes styles are up to date,but the book needs a litte more variety. Good book to buy if your unsure about your style preference.

The concept is interesting & it is fun to try the different recipes, but many many errors mar the book. Also, some the instructions are less than clear.

This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.
not-so-fast ..........2006-05-04
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
Plus, the book gets off to a definitely poor start. The second and longer of two introductory sections is titled "The Tricks of the Trade". Well it would be better if just some of the "tricks" had been explained in full and more accurately. Say, how to make a selection in Photoshop from the best available precursor (a black-and-white alpha channel). Or say again, how to make tonal corrections to the original photograph using a luminance mask. Then again, the first (and shorter) of the introductory chapters, titled "The Artist's Eye", is just a teaser. This topic - pre-visualizing what can be achieved as an output image when composing the original photographic input - could have benefited from a much more detailed explanation/argument. Indeed, it could even merit an expansive concluding chapter (but the book doesn't have one of those at all ....). This is, after all, at the very core of what the user could harness to any given artistic objective.
Additionally, I think that it's strange that a book such as this simply makes no reference at all to what could be printed from the recipes it contains. Some of the finished (output) images might look quite intriguing as 3 by 5 inch reproductions in the book - but does the methodology hold up if you're targeting a 20 by 36 inch output (say) on a large format printer? And what to do if that's not the case? Finally, and in common with the earlier companion volume, this book suffers from strange and inconsistent layouts of screenshots and text, plus all sorts of technical and editing omissions/errors (which include, for example, having the wrong screenshot in the wrong recipe - see p.108).

Robin WIlliams sets the future archetype for technology training.......2006-04-20
I cannot say enough good things about this woman's writing. She breaks the normal rules of teaching by rote, instead helps to impart a holistic understanding of the pros and cons of the technology, and thus it becomes obvious how to use it to the best effect. I have taught seminars using her books as reference materials, and recommend that everyone should own this book who uses a computer. Most people today learn technology by rote, this does not give a person the understanding necessary to face different software versions, or even different challenges that pop up everyday in the workplace. Many books written on technology are only good as doorstops, as they perpetuate the step by step learning by rote crap. This book, very thin and unassuming in it's length, get's in a user's brain like yeast and expands to help them to be able to comprehend WHY things work the way they do. I hope she writes a lot more books, especially one for Windows users, like her Little Mac Book. She deserves to be famous, successful, and prosperous.

I did pick up one or two useful hints in this book. If you haven't managed to figure out for yourself that two spaces after a full stop (period) just looks plain stupid, then you will probably get a lot of utility from this book. As other reviewers have said - it is extremely short and light on content - you'll probably read the whole thing in an hour.
My main beef with this book is that it is very outdated. It contains solutions for many issues which are now handled automatically by modern operating systems and packages. There is constant mention of packages and keyboard shortcuts for programs that just don't exist anymore, many not even in the memories of most people (does anyone remember Ventura Publisher?)
The copyright notice at the front says 1992, and no printing date was listed. Surely after 14 years and selling so many copies Peachpit Press would have a bright idea to update this book for the present day? Different issues to examine and different ways to generate certain characters. If they had done this I would have found the book three times as useful.
Useful but an extremely short book.......2005-06-30
Not counting the introduction and appendices, the content is less than 50 pages. There are excellent tips for making a document appear more attractive and some nice "before" and "after" images are provided. Some tips are obvious for proficient users, like use tabs instead of spaces for indenting. That was the case for me, and I found this book to be overpriced for what I got out of it.

This and its companion "The Mac is not a Typewriter" are so important to everyone who writes a letter, types an e-mail, designs a sign, or creates a presentation. In short easy to understand lessons disguised as chapters, the reader learns everything that was lost when computers replaced typesetters. Though most Macintosh users are professional designers, they won't need this book, but for the millions of PC users out there, this is irreplaceable. I keep four or five copies of this book in my desk. Anyone I find that is breaking these rules and willing to learn how to make their published documents better, I hand them this book to read first. Don't try to learn it all at once. Read a couple chapters and master those skills, then read the next couple chapters. This book sits next to my dictionary and MLA Style Guide on my desk for ready reference.

I took great care to include two spaces after a period and before starting the next sentence. Williams explains why this in incorrect and why so many of us do it religiously, along with a host of other typographic rules. It's relatively short, the writing is concise and interesting and if you type on a computer you'll use what you learn from this book every day.

There are a wide selection of styles that one can find it dificult to not find something that he/she may like. The important part is that the line drawings are shown in very minute step by step details that make it easy to imitate the patterns in real life structures. Complete floor plans and three dimenstioan views are made available thus providing a more complete picture of what you are getting. These are real homes given with the actual location of the city where they were taken from. A great book for architects andhomeowners interested in the styles of a bygone era

This book, originally published in 1881, contains floorplans and elevations of several dozen Victorian houses. Some plans are possibly suitable for actual construction. As the accurate title implies there are many drawings of architectural details. All plans are drawn to scale, but have been reduced by 12%. Great Book.......2007-04-30
This book is great! I purchased it because I mainly wanted an easy way to make hobbled roman shades. I found articles on the net that tell you how to make roman shades but I did not feel that they explained the process well enough. So after purchasing this book Windows with Style: Do-it-yourself window treatments, I made the roman shades for my daughters bedroom, living room, and bathroom. It was easy. The calculations were easy to figure out. Every thing will come out right if you can use a ruler and do simple math. The projects can be done with a variety of fabrics. The alternative window projects like the shoji window screen and the hanging window planter are great too. I made the shoji window screen for my zen-themed bedroom and the hanging window planter for my kitchen. This gave me a convenient place to put my herb garden. Although many of the other projects in this book are of no use to me because they are not my style, I feel that I did get what I wanted and more from this book. Five Stars!

Short Only On Instructions.......2006-11-25
I got four books in an effort to teach myself to properly sew drapes and curtains. This particular book was a learning experience in that I don't think that a window treatment could possibly exist that isn't included in here.
This book taught me what everything is called, generally how it's put together, what types of window treatments are best for certain areas, like small windows, or dormers. It was extremely interesting and educational.
I have to say upfront that if you are new to sewing, you will get lost fast in this book. I would say it is good for the intermediate or expert seamstress. There are beautiful color photos of each project, but there are little steps omitted, so it is not a 1-2-3 type of book. However, if you are already a fairly good sewer, you should have no problem with it.
I was impressed by the number of shades, roman, roller, and such that are included in this book. There is also a section on frosting glass and making Shoji screens. There just doesn't seem to be anything left out concerning the windows.
Overall, this book is very worthwhile for the learning experience. And I look forward to using it to make some shades when I am done with my drapes!
A great book for beginners.......2006-02-13
Having bought a new home in the fall, I was desperate for custom window treatment ideas and not interested in the local store offerings. Not having sewn for 25 years, I was cautious about getting in "over my head." This how-to book was full of "doable" ideas. I created shades for a guest bath and two bedrooms and am now working on the master bedroom. My ultimate goal is a newly constructed sunroom and even though the book doesn't seem to contain exactly what I am looking for, it provided me with great practice projects and something to show for it.
outdated.......2002-03-13
The ideas in this book are almost laughable. The projects that are shown wouldn't even look good with different fabrics. If you are into lots of ruffles and pouffy things everywhere, then this is for you. If you are into simpler window treatments with exquisite fabrics that complement a room, this isn't for you.

This is a good reference to the time period. This is not a "how to" book but rather a period catalog expertly reproduced. This book is good for someone who is interested in creating a home with elements from the late Victorian era.

This is apparently a reprint of one of the really great old catalogs of Victorian Millwork! It has fabulous designs for window ornamentation, verandas, brackets, gable ends, fireplace mantels and most especially doors. Black & White sketches show an impressive variety of ideas.

Save thousands of dollars making your own shades.......2001-03-06
This book was my primary reference while I made shades for 13 windows, saving thousands of dollars over having them made by a workroom. Not only did the book provide inspiration by use of many pictures, I found the instructions to be more than adequate.
Directions are difficult to follow.......1999-02-10
I've purchased this book and have found that the directions are not at all easy to follow. Details are left out, and diagrams are few and far between. I wouldn't recommend it.
