Book Description

Thorough and up-to-date, this book supports any of the most popular approaches to AIS: focus on transaction cycles and controls; focus on systems life cycle; focus on databases and data modeling; or focus on computer-based controls, fraud and auditing. The book begins with an overview and conceptual foundations then goes on to discuss control and audit of accounting information systems, accounting information systems applications, and the systems development process. For CPAs and corporate accountants.

1 out of 5 stars Yawning Hell.......2006-05-31

Is this the world's most boring book ? Technically competent but painfully dry. A gift too insomniacs. Good luck on getting past page 1 !

2 out of 5 stars Only Buy if Required for a Class.......2005-05-09

Very boring reading. Chapters tend to repeat themselves. The class I had for this book was one of the most boring classes I ever had. Instructor lectured from power point slides. I could have taken this class homestudy and done just fine, than to sit in class.

1 out of 5 stars Caution: Will Cause Drowsiness........2004-04-03

This book is simply horrible. It takes the stereotypical accountant and shoves him into the pages. It is so lethargic and monotonous that all the valuable information within the book just stops making sense. This book should be read by anyone who has doubts about becoming an accountant. They'll drop everything and go into premed. Horrible!

3 out of 5 stars Agreed. Boring as dirt........2003-05-10

Everything you need is in here, but the book truly is boring as dirt. If you need it for a class, fine. But do not buy it if you just want something to read.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but boring.......1999-09-12

This is a very comprehensive textbook of the subject. It deals with just about every aspect of the AIS realm. It is, however, a very dull book. There isn't much illustrating, no color, and absolutely no life beyond the black and white wasteland of its pages.

    Book Description

When you think of what it will take to clean your house, are you so overwhelmed you throw up your hands and cry, "It's all too much"? Do you dream of having a closet where your clothes aren't crammed in so tightly that you can actually get to them? Is your basement filled with boxes of precious family mementos you haven't opened in ten years but are too afraid to toss? Are your kitchen counters overrun with appliances you've never used? Do your kids play in the living room because there's no room left in their playroom? If somewhere along the way you've simply lost the ability to keep your home organized and clutter-free, then It's All Too Much has the solution you've been searching for.

Peter Walsh, the organizational guru from TLC's hit show Clean Sweep, understands how easy it is for clutter to creep into your life and how hard it is to get rid of it. In It's All Too Much, he shares his proven system for letting go of your emotional and physical clutter so that you can create a happier, more stress-free home and life. At last, here is a system for managing your clutter, regaining control, and living the life you imagine for yourself.

Peter has helped clients from every walk of life. With his trademark humor and insight, Peter guides you step-by-step through the very charged process of decluttering your home, organizing your possessions, and reclaiming your life. Going way beyond color-coded boxes and storage bin solutions, It's All Too Much shows you how to reexamine your priorities and let go of the things that are weighing you down. Clearly and simply, Peter gives you the courage you need to go through your home, room by room -- even possession by possession -- and honestly assess what adds to your quality of life and what's keeping you from living the life of your dreams.

Filled with real-life examples and advice for homes of all sizes and personalities, It's All Too Much will set you free from the emotional baggage that goes along with clutter and help you lead a fuller, richer life with less stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely practical and helpful guide - worth the cover price for sure, but declutter this when you finish clearing your home!.......2007-10-08

I have some of the usual problems with enjoying shopping and enjoying the things that I own, but having a few too many of these things to truly find my living space useful, comfortable, and attarctive. Add to this the fast that my partner is a total and incurable packrat, and you have the recipe for a couple that needs this book!

I checked it out from the library because I didn't think there would be enough practical info here to make it worth buying. I was wrong. Not only are there chapters that are broken down into steps and reasoned arguments for purging excess, but those steps and reasoned arguments are both pithy and substantial enough that I remember them and find them compelling even when away from the book.

As I walked through the house, the biggest thing I had to remember was that if I had a treasure, was I displaying it and treating it with the great respect it deserves? If not, then maybe it isn't as big of a treasure as I think it is, and maybe I could take a photo of it and get rid of it.

I also had to ask myself, am I holding on to things because other people gave me their treasure? Lots of people give me things, but if it isn't truly meaningful to me and useful to me, then I can either ask them if they'd like it back or get rid of it myself. If it were truly a treasure to them, then why is it taking up space in MY house?

There are a few exceptions to there rules of thumb, but overall he hits the nail on the head with his advice, and made me feel downright invigorated about getting rid of extra "stuff". After all, having craft supplies is meaningless if my craft table is so overstuffed that I can't actually do crafts on it, and the same goes for the other areas of my home.

This book is inspirational, practical, and worth more than one read. Thumbs up!

    5 out of 5 stars I love Peter Walsh!.......2007-10-04

Very good book for people who want to not only 'clear clutter', but change their lives. It helps you look at what you want to create - to have - in your life - not what you're 'giving up' by getting rid of stuff that you think so 'dear' to you. The idea that 'everything in your home is there with your consent', made me think twice - and make some changes!

5 out of 5 stars Great (if dogmatic) help for an overwhelmed clutterer.......2007-09-29

I purchased this book as an audio CD. Peter Walsh has a nice, soft supportive voice and is an easy listen. My house was in chaos, partly due to my working, family illnesses, my tendency to collect more than enough of everything, and a bout of severe depression. I finally quit my job and tackled the overwhelming mess. It was not only exhausting and depressing but also boring!!!! Peter became part of my support system. I played his CD's over and over as I cleaned. It kept me focused on how bad things can get (and had gotten for me) as well as how to escape and hope to have a new life.

5 out of 5 stars More than just "how to organize what you have"..........2007-09-23

My wife and I have been struggling lately with the "too much stuff" syndrome... too many clothes, too much clutter, etc. The book It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff by Peter Walsh caught my eye on one of the personal improvement blogs I follow. I think Sue and I now have a handle on how we need to approach our clutter situation, and it's not a matter of organizing the junk we have... :)

    Contents:

Walsh is a professional organizer who is part of the show Clean Sweep. So this isn't just a hobby with him. It's his life. Many of the people he works with have significant issues with hoarding, to the extent that it affects their day-to-day existence in the house. Rather than just going in and throwing stuff out for them (which would just mean they have more room to hoard with), he works with their emotional issues that put them in this predicament in the first place. By imagining the life you want to lead, you can start to figure out the way your space needs to be laid out. Then dealing with the emotional attachment behind why certain things are compulsively saved, you can begin to discard stuff without suffering from major trauma as the trash man hauls it away. :) I liked his progression from clearing surface clutter to looking at what you actually use (rather than what you think you might use one of these days). Once you get things down to a workable level, then you can practice the "something comes in, something goes out" philosophy. Bottom line, by using these techniques and dealing with the underlying causes, you *can* have a life that's less cluttered and more peaceful.

Fortunately, my wife and I are not at the stage of many of Walsh's clients. But we could be doing so much better, and be so much happier. After we get back from our vacation, I think that the trashman is going to start getting a major workout. I already started today by going through all my clothes and culling out half of what I owned. Given the entertaining style of writing and practical advice dished out here, I think we're well on our way.

4 out of 5 stars More of a philosophy of organization and reduction........2007-09-21

Some people are looking for a detailed step by step book- maybe how to cram more stuff into the same space. That isn't this book. I was struck by the example of the young mother who wanted to scrapbook to preserve memories. Unfortunately the clutter from her hobby was interfering with day to day living and enjoyment of the family home. Like his clients, I find it hard to dispose of things that cost me a money. Somehow it isn't waste if you keep it and pretend that eventually you will use it. Certainly he recommends reducing the buying of "stuff" in the maintenance phase of the program but the initial part requires clearing out the clutter. Unfortunately much of the stuff that we think of as so valuable is unsalable and potentially not desired by charities. I think that facing the hard reality of getting rid of unused kitchen gadgets will make me more resistant to buying in the future.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for preparedness.......2007-10-01

I found this book to be extremeley helpful in its content and uses. It was the most informative book out there and was very detailed. There were many ideas presented that I hadn't even thought of, and I found that it was easily readable. I am so much more prepared in my home for any emergency and I am so much safer after reading this book. This book presents a step by step guide that saves you from hours of research and headache. I wish I had found this book sooner.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but unconvincing and poorly written.......2007-09-27

I hate to be too critical of this book, because I did enjoy reading it and I think it is well worth the money, but I hope Spigarelli reads the customer reviews and hires a good editor before turning out his second edition. There are many, many careless errors in the book that make me believe that some of the instructions may be just as careless. For instance, "approximate" and "proximate" are not interchangeable. The information regarding food storage, particularly the sources of information (e.g., researchers at BYU) reveal the Mormon origins of much of the information. The medical information seems to me (as a layman) to be just plain absurd. For instance, he recommends storing 200 Phenergan tablets (that's a lot of nausea), but only 100 tablets of "acetamine" (??), a couple vials of Pitocin (I suppose we'll be inducing labor at home) and 50 Valium tablets (including two vials of the stuff for injection). I could imagine going to my doctor and asking for a prescription for all those little goodies. My guess is that he'd prescribe something else for me (i.e., a good anti-psychotic). Of course, there's also a recommended arsenal of various types of guns and thousands of rounds of ammo (probably for guarding all the prescription drugs...). Nope, maybe I should be giving it two stars instead.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-25

I thought the book gave a lot of excellent information. I am an old Boy Scout so there is a lot of information in there. I have supplimented the book with a Survival training book that talks about plants, shelters, general survival type of information.
    I liked the book.

3 out of 5 stars Disorganized and unrealistic.......2007-09-01

I bought this book on the strenght of other reviews, and that was a mistake. It is disorganized and unrealistic.

Realistically speaking, we should all aim to prepare for a Katrina-type disaster: one that affects a wide region, with the severe effects of total lack of services lasting 2-4 weeks. This book wants me to prepare a year's worth of stored food. To fulfill this plan, I'd have to move to a farm so I could grow food, raise animals, and have enough room to store the amount he reccomends. It sure isn't going to work in my one-bedroom aparment.

The overall organization of the book is awful - no planning involved in the order of chapters. The first 2/3 of the book are food storage and preparation. If you really want to learn how to grow crops, raise animals, grind your own flour, make your own leather, can/pickle/smoke/preserve your own food - you're better off buying books on those specific subjects. This one goes over them in enough detail (and bad writing) to be boring, but not enough to actually teach you how. Even more ridiculous, he details so many preparations that require electricity. If we have roads and electricity and whatnto, probably I'm not living off my stored foods anyway - and how many of us can set up our own solar power grid sufficient to run the freezer, household appliances, water heater, well pump, whatever?

And then the final 1/3 glosses over preparations for a 2-4 week disaster when it should be focusing on them. If we have a Katrina-type problem, I need to be able to take care of myself until services are reasonably restored enough to either live reasonably, or get out of the area. And if the disaster affects the whole country and there is nowhere to go.... Aside from buying your own farm/ranch in the wilds, living off solar power, etc, you're out of luck.

So, long story short, if you're like me - if you want to be prepared for an act of terrorism, a flood, a fire, a hurricane or tornado, that sort of thing, buy the books below instead.

PREPAREDNESS NOW!: An Emergency Survival Guide for Civilians and Their Families

4 out of 5 stars Overall Good: Beware the Dietary Advise!.......2007-08-02

Spigarelli has put together a great how-to book and I recommend it highly. Where he falls short is supporting an out-dated food pyramid. A healthy diet becomes even more important after a catastrophe.

As a master's degree candidate in nutrition, I found glaringly inaccurate statements regarding animal proteins (meat and dairy) as they relate to a "proper diet". The book has been updated since its original date of publish, but the chapters on food choices seem to have been left untouched. I recommend tweaking his recommendations away from the large amounts of animal proteins and plus up the grains/legumes/vegetables and enhance the supplementation to boost B12 and D. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is leading us to death/disease/discomfort/ailments at very young ages so why continue that diet after a crisis when you may very well have no access to medical assistance? That simply does not compute.

I shared the dietary chapters with doctors, teachers and colleagues and they reacted just as I did. "What year was THAT written?" was said quite a bit. One of the many roads that have brought us to the precipice of crisis is the misuse of land and water toward keeping animals and the pollution derived therefrom, not to mention the negative effect of animal proteins to the human body. Even after a crisis, I cannot imagine the giving of precious land and water over to livestock when crops will sustain us.

Again, this is a very good book and Spigarelli should be commended on a job well done. I would just like to stress the fact that you should inspect the food recommendations more closely as the "conventional wisdom" regarding the food pyramid over the years is off base.

Clear and concise. Basic information, however, which makes this book a good place to start for beginners breaking into the SEO arena.

I must appreciate the effort taken by the Cousins but its sounds too basics.
It could have had a faster pace and covered more SEO parameters.

2 out of 5 stars For beginners with spare time.......2007-08-15

The writers have spent hours and months writting this book and it is hard not to admire their determination, but the result is unbalanced. The book does bring some hard facts and useful behaviours but enough to make a brochure not a full book. The first half of the book talks generalities and concepts about the web, about marketing and search engine behaviour but every time it is becoming really interesting the writers say "we'll see that point in chapter XX". It is a good trick to keep readers of thrillers on the edge, but I found it annoying and time wasting. Eventually the book gets into stats and practical actions but it feels too little too late. Most of the "do to" lists at the end of each chapter are more summaries than action points. If you are starting from scratch and have time, this book will teach you usefull things and fill your time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever- really!.......2007-08-14

I've dabbled in SEO over the years mainly as an account rep (punching bag) for ad agencies. Caught in the middle of the client and the creative/techs that play each other off one another. This book really opened my eyes about how to build a SEO team with the PR, Marketing and IT dudes. And, I finally get it. You HAVE to document your SEO work for the accounting folks. There is SO MUCH junk out there and vendors promising you better SEO for $$$. In one way, I can't believe these wonderful ladies are actually sharing this "school of hard knocks" info. And, the injection of bits of humor make it such a wonderful read. They prove their thesis that SEO is really an on-going process. And, they provide the step-by-step (truely an hour a day) with downloadable FORMS to document and faciliate the journey. I've checked out a lot of SEO related stuff over the years either in books or on the web, and, nothing compares to this 300 page book. For me, and, I'm really not a techi dude (I'm in sales "a people person") --- I just want a smok'n site to get more leads --- but, this book was actually fun to read. And, understand! There wasn't a page I read that I said "huh?" Don't get me wrong, Jennifer & Gradiva know there stuff. I'm sure they could talk over my head in a heart beat. But- you know- that's the REAL sign of a professional (like a doctor with "good bedside manners" that can explain and organize things so that they can be understood. I'm looking forward to future books. - not that this book was incomplete. I read a ton of books, and, these authors have a talent. Thank you for sharing your it with us ladies!

2 out of 5 stars Author completely misses Outlook's powerful heirarchical capabilities........2006-11-08

The result of using Outlook the way this author recommends is that you'll essentially have two separate lists: one list of all your projects and another list of all your "next actions". Since you'll be able to sort your next-action list according to the context in which each action will be done, this arrangement is better than nothing. But the problem with this arrangement is that with it, Outlook maintains neither project-to-next-actions connections nor next-actions-to-project connections. The author would have you list "next actions" within each project's Notes field to link the project to its next actions, and the author offers no link of each next action back to its project.

The author has missed a simple, powerful solution to this problem. When using Tasks in Outlook, the Tasks folder offers a heirarchical directory structure in which it's very easy to add folders and subfolders, just as one might do in Windows Explorer. Each of these folders that you create can be named to represent a project, and the next actions for each of these projects can be stored within the project's folder. Then all you have to do to see a list of all your next actions (across all projects) is to run a quick "Advanced Find" on your Outlook Tasks folder. Once you get the criteria of your search the way you want them, your search criteria can easily be saved, allowing you to recreate your "next actions" list with current data whenever you want it. If you include the "In Folder" field to display in your search results, then this field provides your next-action-to-project connection; and when you're reviewing your Outlook Tasks folder, the directory list of folders is essentially your project list, and within each project you see only the next actions associated with that project, so it's easy to maintain a project focus when planning your projects. Also, when using Outlook this way, many additional Outlook features can be used as well.

This book offers a few good ideas, but by failing to describe a simple and powerful way to have Outlook itself maintain the association of each project to its next actions, this book cannot be strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to start getting organized.......2006-09-11

This book gives you great ideas about how to get organiazed and get things going. The only thing is that you will really need to use and get along MS Outlook pretty well, else you'll miss some of the tips and tricks in the book.
Pretty good start-up place for those who need some pointers at how to classify and prioritize tasks, events, items, and almost everything.

5 out of 5 stars Take Back Your Life!.......2006-07-10

I'm not even to the end of the book and I already have my e-mail box emptied to zero, all my documents and files organized on my computer into an easy reference system so I know what information I already have. I am going to apply the same principles to my paper files this week. I had so much information stored and coming in that it is a huge relief to gain control over it all! All because I applied what I learned from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stong Emphasis on Up Front Planning.......2006-07-03

I am a veteran Franklin Covey planner user and consider myself very well organized and a strong time manager. Our company recently made the move to outlook, and I purchased this book hoping to get some tips on how to make the most of planning with outlook from someone who had a time management orientation. What I didn't expect was to learn anything more about time management. Boy was I wrong! Sally provides some real eye openers about spending more time up front planning tasks to get to "Strategic Next Actions" - tasks you can actually do without any dependencies. She also packs in excellent tips on setting up a reference system, handling email, and using the outlook task categories to their full potential.

I was able to achieve my basic objective with this book. My planning system was one where I used my Franklin Covey Plan Plus for Outlook software to create a daily task list each day with only items I could do that day, and used a collection of spreadsheets and word documents to track more complex "projects." Sally show how to integrate all of this into outlook with both planning and action tasks.

If you are looking for an indepth book on outlook however this isn't it. Instead its what it is advertised to be - a book on organizing first that tells who how to use outlook to implement the organizing system Sally has developed. The outlook information you need to implement the system is provided in a concise fashion and was very helpful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Outlook on Steroids.......2006-04-02

I discovered this book while searching for something to help me manage the relentless flood of email coming at me every day (I had 900 unread emails at the time). I thought if I could become an outlook power user, I might be able to manage that number down. This book helped me learn the ins and outs of outlook, but more importantly, taught me a compelling approach to managing my crazy, demanding, overcommited, multi-tasking life. Mind you, I was a Franklin Planner flunky and a Day-Timer drop out, which made me a motivated learner. I literally devoured this book - read it cover to cover in just a few days (with a highlighter). Along the way I configured Outlook the work way the author recommends. I discussed it with friends. I actually implemented my own "IMS", which I think is what sets this book apart from David Allen's "Getting Things Done". You could read GTD, but the content may just "wash over you" and not make a practical difference in the way you work. This is specific, hands on, step by step instruction that if you're serious, will change the way you work in Outlook for the better. Highly recommended . . .

    3 out of 5 stars Would give it 2 1/2 stars if I could.......2007-10-06

The book isn't really all that bad, the problem is that it can be confusing to some readers. Instead of giving a list of problems, I am going to go into some detail about one specific thing wrong with the book, which could be a BIG problem for some readers. It is this:

It seems like once or twice every couple paragraphs, Mano will give a one-sentence explanation or description of something; and then a sentence or two later in the same paragraph, he will attempt to make the same point again but by rewording and rearranging the original sentence. I found this so incredibly distracting that I could not finish the book. I think Mano is doing this, i.e. repeating himself, to embed a concept into the student's mind. Not a bad idea, but it is poorly implemented by Mano...

what was so distracting about this, is that even if the reader feels he understands the concept the first time it is presented, when he then reads the reworded version, the tendency is to say "hey, wait a minute, is this the same thing he said before, or do the two statements conflict? or is it new information? Or did I not understand the first time??" So then I, at least, would go back and reread the first statement, then again compare it to the second, until I was able to answer these questions for myself. So it really slowed down my reading. I don't know, maybe it's just the way I read.

I should mention that I was mainly trying to learn from the book by self-study, i.e. no professor, although I did take a microprocessors course about 15 years ago.

Well, I guess I was verbose :-> but I wanted to inform so that anyone who thinks that they also will be distracted by this, buy a different book (like Rafiquzzaman)

4 out of 5 stars Very good for an introductory course.......2007-08-05

I had this text for a course more than a decade ago. I found everything very easy to understand and still refer to the book when I want to know something about computer architecuture. It is very complete at the introductory level. My main complaint is the book introduces too much old-fashioned CISC with its microcode and single accumulator register before introducing RISC later on. In a modern course the order should be reversed since I believe most students would find RISC to be clean and sensibly designed while the CISC examples in this book make for tedious reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook.......2007-04-13

Read this book before reading anything else. It is clearly written.
Brings you from the bottom to the top.

Dont fall for new modern latest shiny expensive Comp Architecture books. They are impossible to study from.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible book or just hard material?.......2006-12-27

I don't know, but this book was not very useful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Struck by its simplicity and completeness!.......2006-05-22

I love this book. I am struck by its simplicity. How can a book be so simple, yet so clear in delivering the message, in a topic that is considered to be complicated? Computer architecture is not easy, but with the help of this book I was able to build a very solid foundation when I took the course. And even though it is an introductory book, I still refer to it in more advanced courses and related topics.

    Book Description

“Storage Networks Explained has much to recommend it.
…a rarity in the literature of digital data storage – a complete exposition of both the base subject matter and its applications, which at the same time offers a level of readability making it suitable as an introduction to the subject. Storage Networks Explained is also flexible. It can be read cover-to-cover, browsed, or used as a reference. I recommend Storage Networks Explained as an essential component of any active information technology library.”

Paul Massiglia, Technical Director, VERITAS Software Corporation

Storage networks will become a basic technology like databases or local area networks. According to market research, 700f external storage devices will be connected via storage networks in 2003. The authors have hands-on experience of network storage hardware and software, they teach customers about concrete network storage products, they understand the concepts behind storage networks, and show customers how storage networks address their business needs.

Storage networks provide shared access to stored data from multiple computers and servers, thus increasing storage efficiency  and availability. They permit information management functions such as backup and recovery, data mirroring, disaster recovery, and data migration to be performed quickly and efficiently, with a minimum of system overhead.

This book explains how to use storage networks to fix malfunctioning business processes, covering the technologies as well as applications. A hot topic that will become increasingly important in the coming years.

Provides basic application information key for systems administrators, database administrators and managers who need to know about the networking aspects of their systems. As well as systems architects, network managers, information management directors and decision makers.
This book also supports applications for graduate students and other relevant courses in the field.

3 out of 5 stars Good content, if somewhat dated, substandard translation.......2007-05-12

As a reader of Wiley books since my undergraduate days, many years ago, I have come to respect and enjoy their high quality, and have, over the years, purchased and recommended quite a few, both for the companies I've worked with and for my personal professional library.

It is therefore a deep disappointment for me to read "Storage Networks Explained", originally published in German, and translated to English in 2004.

My disappointment is not with the technical contents - the book was obviously written by experts in the field, and give a complete (if slightly dated) review of the field of storage networks. In terms of contents, my expectations are fulfilled. However, the translation of the book from the original was done in a sub-standard manner, resulting in an uncomfortable reading experience. All too often, my concentration was broken by having to re-read sentences and trying to understand what the original authors were trying to say in German, as the phrasing in English is awkward and unnatural at best, and ofter plainly wrong.

The information I needed was there, but getting it was made harder than necessary due to the poor translation and editing. A newer book that's up-to-date and even a bit better in terms of style and ease of reading will well-deservedly remainder all the copies of this work. Until such a book is out, non-German speakers who wish to get a decent overview of the field will have to struggle with this.

5 out of 5 stars Best storage book in the market.......2006-11-09

Overall, this is the best storage book that you ever read .

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of storage networking.......2006-02-13

This is one of the best books I've encountered in many years. What I like about it:
    - Describes everything (using illustration) from file-systems and volume managers down to transport concepts like fibre channel, iSCSI, infiniband, VI
    - Goes into concepts like mirroring, snapshots and other technologies in an easy to relate manner.

Despite the relatively high price, I give this book an A and would heartily recommend it. However this book is not for programmers or those intending to design things. Neither is it for sales/marketing folks who just want to know key buzzwords. Its more for technologists, CTOs and others interested in how things work with regards storage networking.

5 out of 5 stars Succinct overview of Storage Networks.......2004-10-19

A very good translation of the german text. There are a few areas where the translation falters but overall excellent. This is not an implementation book. It's meant to be a general overview of the Storage Network universe. The authors focus on Fibre Channel SAN which is still dominant in large corporations and gaining popularity among mid level companies. The book does a good job of explaining the plus/minus of all the competing standards as well as giving an infrastructure map of each of the technology setups. If you want to understand the ABCs of Storage, your journey should start with this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-13

This book was new and in excellent conditions. I really buy another book from Amazon. Also the shipping was very fast.

5 out of 5 stars Not just fluff.......2007-07-23

Get into the ins and outs of PV installation. This book is actually too complicated for the casual observer since there are a lot of variables to designing a workable cost efficient (well, hopefully not costing more than need be) PV system. For instance, a materials list for a 12 volt DC battery and charge controller system consist of about 80 lines. Each with their own numbers!

5 out of 5 stars Photovoltaics Design and Installation Manual.......2007-07-07

This is a low-cost and easy to read and understand book for designing and installing PV systems. I highly recommend it for interested students, engineers and contractors.

5 out of 5 stars Renuable Energy Education for a Sustainable Future.......2007-05-16

Great book, easy to understand for everyone. We all need to work toward this kind of lifestyle. Including supporting our communities, making them more levable, and buying local.

3 out of 5 stars So So Solar.......2007-05-13

Not a bad book, but it gives itself way too much credit by billing itself as a "Design and Installation Manual". This 315 page book could be condensed into a 50 page useful book entitled "A Basic Introduction to Considerations in Photovoltaic Design and Installation". It's choppy to read, and it has a lot of filler, generalities, and truisms. Expect a lot of this: "The major aspects of installing the photovoltaic array are choosing the most applicable mounting systems and making a proper installation". Some of the electrical theory is questionable. Still, it's the best book I've found, which means there is a great opportunity for a knowledgable PV systems integrator who can write well and put together a comprehensive, well-written text on the subject.

    4 out of 5 stars Good enough.......2007-09-19

This is a perfectly good resource, if you're looking for the theoretical underpinnings of how IA should work. I was, however, looking for more specifically technical information, along the lines of algorithms and integration techniques. For this I ended up going with Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications, which is more geared in that direction. Again, if IA is your whole intention, then this is a great resource, but if you're looking for technical detail, look elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver.......2007-06-22

As project manager, I was in a bind when our contract information architect failed to understand the complexities of our matrixed business model and client base. Rosenfeld's book helped me design a IA for our 700 page HTML site that has since been described as simple, intuitive, a no-brainer. What great compliments!

The book describes basic theories of IA in general (i.e. book indexes and tables of contents, libraries, etc.) and the pros and cons of different organization, labeling, and navigation systems. Then Rosenfeld advises on presenting IA to management, etc., managing expectations (yours and others), and gives detailed examples of IA strategies online.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Title (3rdEd).......2007-06-16

In "Part I - Intro to IA," obviously the basics are covered, like what exactly is IA? What does an Information Architect do? After reading this title, I would define an Information Architect as a glorified content manager. Someone that occupies the realm between UI designer and DB engineer.

Google is pretty good at finding information for us on the vast Internet, but there is a long way to go. I believe these authors make a valid point that IA will become increasingly relevant. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that in the future you will actually be able to obtain a BS in IA. Nonetheless, IA is around us everyday when we use technology no matter what we want call it.

The elements that make up IA are covered in "Part II - Basic Principles of IA." The basis of IA is the interaction or retrieval of information in terms of organization systems, labeling systems, navigation systems, search systems, thesauri, controlled vocabularies, and metadata. What this basically means is, how do we categorize our data so that it makes sense, is easy to navigate and search, and is relevant or adaptable according to our users' vocabularies.

"Part III - Process and Methodology" helps one plan a path to your IA goals. For instance, developing a research management team to discuss such goals, your target audiences, functionality/deficiencies of your current IA system, and integrating other software, such as your customer management system (CMS).

My favorite topic here is the detailed discussion of "building vocabularies." This is something everybody needs to constantly perfect. An example of this is, two people can search for the same thing using two different criteria. How can can we build a vocabulary system that recognizes that?

Many research tools are discussed. My favorite technique, and it's so simple, is card sorting. Get some blank cards (20-25) and write on them the headings from categories, subcategories, and content within your site. Ask a user to sort this stack of cards into piles that make sense to him and have him label those cards using post-it notes. Make sure to tell them to think-out-loud and be sure to take notes. This will give you an idea of how one would "travel" through your site, what is relevant, and what should not be on your homepage, etc.

The authors take the reader through the process of the IA development cycle, from concept, to getting managers to buy-in, to the implementation and administration of the system; very thorough.

The hands-on aspects of IA are explained in "Part IV - IA in Practice." One thing I found insightful was how one could pursue an official education in the area of IA, albeit there is no such degree. To gain a competitive advantage, the authors suggest obtaining a degree in Library and Information Science (LIS) or Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

At the end of chapter 15, there is a list of position titles making up an ideal IA team.
This list may prove helpful for potential readers to get a better understanding of what IA is comprised of.

    1) Strategy Architect - responsible for overall design goals and integration

    2) Thesaurus Designer - develops classification schemes, controlled vocabularies, and thesauri

    3) Controlled Vocabulary Manager - manages the evolution of controlled vocabularies and coordinates the indexing specialists team

    4) Indexing Specialist - tags content and services with controlled vocabulary metadata

    5) Interaction Designer - creates navigation schemes and page layouts with a focus on user interaction

    6) IA Software Analyst - links the IA and IT teams, focusing on ways to leverage software to create, manage, and drive the user experience

    7) IA Usability Engineer - focuses on intersection of usability and IA by conducting studies that isolate IA elements, such as category labels or metadata.

    8) Cartographer - converts patterns in content, structure, and usage into maps, guides, indexes, and other useful navigational tools.

    9) Search Analyst - leads the design, improvement, and ongoing analysis of search system.

"PART V - IA in the Organization" was a little dry for my tastes and irrelevant to me. May be very helpful for someone in a large bureaucratic organization that wants to implement their IA concepts.

The moral of the story is that "site builders" must employ multiple info retrieval methods and tightly integrate them. Everyone searches, browses, scans, and finds info differently; accommodate them.

This book is very comprehensive and even deals with the politics of IA. To me, the book gets a little long at times, but if your life evolves around information somehow, this is an essential read.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2007-06-12

The topic of the Polar Bear is very defined and focused, and the book reflects this. It's a bit dry - reads much like stereo instructions - but for someone who is dedicated to exploring content and information architecture in depth, there's simply no better reference.

I wouldn't call this a good primer, but I'd definitely recommend it for more advanced reading, and definitely as a reference book.

1 out of 5 stars Very biased book.......2007-06-02

In general, this book contains some useful yet common sense information. This book is more about how to become a talker than a worker. I read through and found the first half confirmed my experience and the second half is a bust. If you want to become an office politician, this is a must have.
