Few elements are as ubiquitous or as essential as water, or as appealing for the soothing sights and sounds with which it enhances our environment. Fountains are the ideal way to incorporate water's magic into our homes and gardens, and the fountain maker becomes something of an illusionist, striving emulate nature and to conceal the mechanics that make the perpetual flow of water possible.

Dorcas Adkins is certainly a magician when it comes to fountain design. Her wizardry encompasses bamboo, wood, ceramic, concrete, stone, and metal creations, from small tabletop delights to full-sized garden waterfalls. Her extremely thorough and well-diagrammed instructions make even the most complex projects approachable--and some of them are indeed fairly complex, involving woodworking skills, plaster and concrete casting, ceramic modeling, soldering, or rigging an existing sculpture. But the results are well worth the effort, yielding Zen-like arrangements in which water trickles over a miniature bonsai garden, through bamboo piping, or into a rustic stone trough filled with water lilies; or more traditional Western constructions such as a ewer-toting cherub, a shell-and-stone-and-tile mosaic, or various spouting faces.

Beginners or those seeking smaller-scale productions are best off starting with a more basic approach, like Dawn Cusick's Tabletop Fountains. But for the more adventurous fountaineers, it's hard to beat Adkins's presentation, which also helpfully includes a list of mail-order suppliers and a useful at-a-glance guide to finding general materials, from antique tubs to pond liners to wooden barrels. --Amy Handy

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Fountain magic.......2000-05-19

A truely awesome book. I came upon it when I looked through Angel Lee's review list and ordered it. I am indebted to her! I have been making my own fountains since I bought my 1st home 6 years ago, and wanted new ideas. These are wonderful. Some of the simpler dish-type gardens will make lovely Christmas gifts, and I look forward to starting them. For the more adventurous, there are more complex and larger fountains/ponds, all truely picturesque, which would be great fun for anyone with a reasonable sized yard. A friend has created one on his terraced front lawn, and it captures the attention of by passers, making his neighborhood The Place to visit of late. For the truely enthused, there are directions for casting subjects in ceramics, for designing cement fountains or basins, and even for making masks of living persons. Although many items can be collected from the "saved" materials everyone seems to store away in garages or from yard and garage sales, those like pumps, tubing, and other hardware items can be found at nurseries and hardward stores. There is also a very useful list of addresses where other types of supplies may be found. I can hardly wait to get started! Thanks again Angel.

5 out of 5 stars Build a wide variety of impressive fountains with ease.......2000-04-03

This is a wonderful book for constructing beautiful & impressive looking fountains. The fountains here are unexpectedly easy to construct & cost far less than commercial ones. It is filled with ideas that allow the maker to add his own unique touch.

The materials selection is varied. Almost any watertight vessel can be the basis of a small fountain. Other materials include bamboo, wood, ceramic, concrete, stone & metal. Pump selection & mechanical requirements are also covered.

Projects range from small table-top fountains to elaborate outdoor units. There are even instructions for a 3' high tiered waterfall. All have clear construction diagrams & color photos of the finished work.

Helpful extras include lists of suitable plants to use with the fountains, suggestions for finding materials, & a list of mail order suppliers. This is the book to get if you want to know the joy of building a fountain of your own creation.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-02-16

I knew the minute I saw the cover of Simple Fountains for Indoors and Outdoors that it was exactly what I was looking for. The cover photograph is an appealing table fountain. Inside the book is a well thought out plan designed to help the novice achieve success making tabletop or other indoor/outdoor fountains.

Every conceivable problem is addressed with buying information, pictures, diagrams and trouble shooting.

I know I can create a beautiful water fountain from the information presented in Ms.Adkins' book. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Fountains for Indoors & Outdoors.......1999-11-26

This is a beautiful book & it's written by a true expert - and artist. Dorcas Adkins has been designing & making fountains & other garden art for 10 years. We had her bamboo flute fountain in our garden in Ohio, which we had to leave behind when we moved, so I was very pleased to discover this book. It provides detailed & clear instructions (along with inspiration) for indoor & outdoor fountains.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Useful Combined!.......1999-11-11

Adkins' treatment of these beautiful fountains and how to create them is just what is needed by those of us who want to listen to their soothing sound and see their sparkling light at home. What is best, is the steps are so easy to follow!

5 out of 5 stars Differentiates between New Age and Scientific Feng Shui.......2007-06-18

Whew! Thank you for delivering a book that sets apart the American "New Age" Feng Shui from the Traditional Chinese Feng Shui derived from Science and Math.

Feng Shui is more than rearranging furniture and hanging mirrors. This book delves into the history, the reasoning, common sense, and the scientific.

It explains that BELIEF and CULTURE is the reasoning for hanging bagua mirrors and other remedies-a physical reminder in the home of tradition. Much like wearing a cross pendant is the ever present reminder of Christian faith. It makes no sense at all for people to hang flutes from their ceilings if they don't know why they are doing it-although this book does explain the mythology and reasoning involved.

Far more valuable are the chapters explaining the calculation of your personal Kua number, the use of a Lo Pan, and other Compass School information.

The history detailed makes a nice backdrop for the information, though if you're impatient you can skip it and not be lost when you get to the meat of the book.

I've had this book for years and its served me well as a reference for when I go apartment hunting. I also reference it when designing floor plans for my dream home-a long term hobby of mine.

Great book, laid out well and informative. [..] . I highly recommend KISS Feng Shui as a resource that delivers on scientific feng shui and common sense, while putting "American New Age/Black Hat/Intuitive" Feng Shui in its place.

3 out of 5 stars Not so simple.......2006-03-22

I'm still trying to get into this book. There is a lot of subject matter with mulitple origins, interpretations and applications of feng shui. Whew! I'm not finding this KISS publication to be that simple. However, lots of info and pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Fun, and Practical Guide to Using Feng Shui1.......2003-07-31

The Keep it Simple Series distinguishes itself from other series like the Idiot and Dummie Guides by its extensive use of color and photographs. However, the superior content far outweighs the appealing cosmetics of the book's layout and design. In a nutsell, Stephen Skinner knows what he's talking about. In fact, he's a world renowned expert in the field as well as the author of one of my favorite feng shui books, The Living Earth Manual of Feng Shui. In his KISS book, Stephen provides an excellent overview of what feng shui is and how it can help you maximize your health, wealth, and relationships. It's well-organized and easy to read. Impliment his practical advice and you'll witness first hand feng shui's power. A thousand kow tows Stephen for elevating this Chinese practice! Nice work.

5 out of 5 stars Harmony and Happiness.......2002-06-11

According to this book, my desk is in the wrong place. Although I have no choice, I've noticed I'm more edgy with the door behind me and when someone enters my office, I feel that if I was sitting with my back towards the wall, I would feel more comfortable and in control of my environment. My only problem is having to look at the computer wires, which would annoy me more.

So, I think there is something to be said for furniture placement, when practical.

Being of the thought process that there is something to be learned from everything, you can try to take what you need from this book to help encourage an environment you will feel comfortable in.

The Chapters Include:

What is Feng Shui? - Wind Water, a connection to natural elements. "Flow"
is also an important element. It is not a religion or magic.

Some of the ideas I incorporated into my own home without even knowing they were Feng Shui concepts was the use of mirrors. It does definitely create a feeling of energy in a room that would otherwise feel closed in.

If you are very, very serious about Feng Shui or extremely curious, this book has more than you will ever want to know.

3 out of 5 stars My thoughts.......2002-05-06

I found the book to be a little bit boring. I wanted to know how to change my home to fit into the Feng Shui philosophy and it gave me more of a background of Feng Shui. That is great, I am glad I know all of that now, but I didn't find any practical ways to change my home.

Invented by someone years ago, each teacher claims they have the answer to all of life's problems if you move your furniture around in your house and paint it certain colors. If not you're going to have bad health, a bad love life etc. Tired of these books that are really evil in trying to control people in need by telling them to use a system that can help them. If you feel moving your couch will change your life, look at the level of gullability you have.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2000-04-10

This little book is filled with beautiful photography. The author walks you through every part of the home to explain positive/negative energies and what to do to make your home more harmonious and pleasant. She brings the mystery out of Feng Shui so anyone can understand it and put its priciples to work for them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A lovely book!.......2006-12-29

I really like this book. It gives suggestions for gardens made to improve one's life. I made a miniture 3x3 foot version of the 'Power Garden' and loved it! This book has some good illustrations. There were no photo examples but I will still rate it a 5 because it has some great information regarding the bagua, the meanings of color and meanings of shapes in Feng Shui, the different types gardens (i.e. Meditation Garden, Lover's Garden, Children's Garden, etc) and many helpful tips. This is a fairly basic book that someone will understand even if they know little or nothing about Feng Shui. This is a cheerful and fun book, with none of the superstition, none of the complicated ceremonies, or number calculations like other Feng Shui books I have read. I own this book and will read it again once I am ready to plant a garden in my new place!

5 out of 5 stars You can create your own feng shui garden.......2000-12-20

I followed the guidelines for plants, color, fragrance, shapes, and meaning, and designed five interlocking Florida feng shui gardens based on Nancilee's book. We used the bagua to locate the right spots (for us) for a Meditation garden, a Healing garden, a Fertility garden, a Child's garden and, in the Power Corner, the Lover's garden.

The result is a tropical paradise which enchants us, our friends, and garden enthusiasts. The book was a great guide to learning by doing.

3 out of 5 stars There are better books out there.......2000-11-29

Fortunately I already knew Feng Shui. This book, I felt was rather thin on the basics of Feng Shui. As I read it I kept waiting for Wydra to touch more upon the Bagua, but it never came.

5 out of 5 stars Provides a new way to analyze your garden........1999-04-14

I recommend this book if you are looking for a new approach to what might be called the garden metaphor. This book provides wonderful definitions of the garden and the importance of place, but also gives practical ways to analyze faults as well as checklists and questions to help gardeners pinpoint where they might want to go. I found it helped to diagnose my problem areas and also pointed to some not so radical solutions that changed emphasis just enough to give my garden a whole new look. I highly recomment it.

5 out of 5 stars Feng Shui in the Garden is a treat for all.......1998-11-17

Feng Shui in the Garden is a great book for either the feng shui savvy or the novice. Easy to understand explanation about feng shui and soul provoking ideas for the garden make this a "best buy". Ms. Wydra presents a mini encyclopedia on vegetation that transcends the norm by including the implications of color, shape and symbolic meaning of plants and trees. The reader also learns how to create speciality gardens to include a power garden, a lover's garden, a meditation garden and a healing garden plus more. She continuously connects all of this with the Ba-Gua, a feng shui roadmap for life. What I especially like about this book is the simplicity of the garden designs - nothing seems overwhelming. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art that seeks to create balance and harmony in the environment as a way to improve every aspect of life, including finances, relationships, and health. The practice, which can be applied to everything from a home to a handbag, has gained celebrity in the West in the past several years. In this book an expert explains the basic principles that help readers apply feng shui simply and experience the benefits almost immediately.

After learning the basic concepts, the reader will find creative solutions to developing a career (an aquarium with goldfish in a home office encourages financial success); improving relationships (crystal mobiles can bring more sparkle and passion); and strengthening family (positioning your bed in the right way encourages fidelity). Most important, the first aim of feng shui is not to have any clutter and thus to create a smooth, steady flow of energy. There are numerous tips for how to tackle even the most out-of-control closet.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not the best book.......2007-03-19

One of the several Feng Shui books I bought. Just clean up your home and arrange it as you like. I don't like all this condemnation. If you don't do this or that bad things will happen to you. I think it's a load of nonsense and something to make money off of. The constant threatening of Feng Shui to begin with seems evil to me. Keep away from it.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Feng Shui Book.......2001-08-19

This is a really good book on feng shui, especially if you are new to feng shui or just want a simple, basic book. The best part of this book is the very detailed charts, graphics and pictures, since they don't leave you confused like some poorly drawn diagrams might. The language is simple and easy to read.

The book is divided into 10 easy lessons, although there is no need to go in the order of the book. Each of the 10 chapters ends in a Top Ten Questions section about the chapter. The book also touches on some things many other books neglect, such as gardening, how to do feng shui around other people, your workplace, major life changes and even talks about what to look for when you are looking for a new home. There is also a space clearing procedure included.

5 out of 5 stars My first Feng Shui book.......2001-01-09

I received this book as a Christmas present and found it quite interesting, since this is the first time I'm reading about Feng Shui. The drawings, illustrations, and photographs found on practically every page are very well done.

Each 'lesson'/chapter is pretty short (less than 20 pages), and the summary questions at the end of each section are also a good idea.

The writing style is very clear and easy to understand.

The list of books in the 'further reading' is also interesting for a reader that would want to dig deeper into this subject.

3 out of 5 stars Basic but not enough detail.......2000-09-26

Simple Feng Shui is a wonderful book. It gives you both a broad base for understanding what Feng Shui is and for realizing how you can use Feng Sui's concepts. This book also provides one with very clear direction on how to use Feng Shui to improve the balance, livability and character of one's home. The writing is deep without being pedantic and the approach brings much light to those of us who had not considered how to make our lives more balanced by improving our homes.
