Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good book in many ways........2007-09-26

Tolpin has put together a grand book on the table saw. A little bit of tricks, some jigs, when it's good and possible to use it and things to build for safety. Some things he wrote about I would not use. I believe that it's safe to use, but... I don't think I'll be cutting any circles with my saw, but if anyone asked me if you can, I'll say "Yes", you can do it safely. I'll keep this publication close to my saw for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough!.......2007-06-15

Several good reviews on this book, all are correct IMO. This book is very thorough.... I thought I knew a LOT about TS's, but this book taught me even more. Some very useful jigs, safe work methods (very critical when cutting small strips), great set up instructions, and, great charts on type of blades to use. If you use a TS, there is something extra you will learn if you buy this book...

2 out of 5 stars Ok but not very detailed.......2006-05-26

This book is a more a of brief review of table saw technique and jigs. The chapters are not very detailed and don't actually contain any directions for doing most of cuts or processes. The most frustrating thing is where he will say "just use this very handy jig" and then gives a very crude drawing of the jig with no explanation of how to build it or even a basic layout. A MUCH better book is Kelly Mehler's The Table Saw Book.

4 out of 5 stars thank you .......2005-09-29

The book was very good a need to have in the shop

4 out of 5 stars A great book for novices or beyond.......2004-02-17

Several other reviewers have commented on the value of the jigs, and I agree. I wish Tolpin would have presented an overview of his fence jig system early on, it would have been easier to grasp the concept BUT unlike one other reviewer I certainly did not have to go through the book several times to get it.

Besides the jigs, I appreciated the discussion of blades (design, choice, and care), ripping, and setup. Having read the section on setting up my saw, I went out to the shop, tuned things up and it has made a big difference in my work - everything fits together better!

Finally, the person who said that this book is of no use to the beginner with a beginner's saw: think again. My Bosch 4000 is pretty basic, but I was able to apply 98% of Tolpin's advice to my unit.

If he would just add an overview of his fence jig system I could give this 5 stars!

Book Description

You're tired of staring at bare hardwood floors, but the Oriental rug you covet is prohibitively expensive. The solution? A floorcloth that you can make yourself for a fraction of the cost of an area rug or carpet. Floorcloths - hand-painted durable canvas rugs - have become popular again because of a renewed interest in Early American decorating techniques. And since the most appropriate place for a floorcloth is on the hardwood floors used in so much of today's interior decoration, they complement today's lifestyle. The design possibilities, from country to contemporary, are endless.

Filled with essential techniques and sensational color variations, FLOORCLOTH MAGIC: HOW TO PAINT CANVAS RUGS FOR DECORATIVE HOME USE is the most comprehensive, easy-to-follow guide to creating beautiful paint-based rugs for your home. It provides basic how-to instruction on every material, tool, and technique, plus recipes for paint finishes, including sponging, stamping, marbling, stenciling, ragging, and more. An introduction to color palettes and pattern development makes this a useful guide for a beginner as well as a valued resource for any craftsperson.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for any level.......2007-03-13

This is the second of 2 books I ordered because I wanted to paint and design a floor cloth.
Easy instructions and some beautiful designs for anyone who does not want to design their own.

4 out of 5 stars INSPIRING.......2007-02-21

The artist does a good job covering all the needed supplies and methods to create such beautiful floor cloths. There is a lot covered in these pages, although I could have skipped the color theory part given its really trial and error and personal design ultimately. There are lots of beautiful floor cloths to admire by this artist and others. Wish there were some substantial patterns to apply in addition to the very basic stripes included. This book helps motivate one to begin and do it right, and the rest is really up to one's imagination which the author gives a good springboard to leap from.

4 out of 5 stars Floorcloth Magic.......2002-08-12

Clearly and concisely written, no confusion or contradictions like some other books on the same subject. Excellent section on contributing artists showing a wide diversity of styles.

Of course the majority of the rooms are contemporary but there were a few that made me wonder. I saw a few rooms that I just wouldn't have classified as contemporary. I think this book did a GREAT job of defining and showing examples of many elements that make a room contemporary. There are so many decorating books that only offer great photos. This book taught you to identify contemporary items so that you could easily apply the information when you are selecting items for your own home.

Book Description

To make a big impression, says stencilling expert Sandra Buckingham, you don't have to re-create the Sistine Chapel. Start small, she counsels, and the rest will follow.

Buckingham's latest book Stencilling on a Grand Scale leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.

Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.

A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.

Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and Stencilling on a Grand Scale introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.

I have enjoyed thinking about doing some of this. The book gives fine guidance

4 out of 5 stars Good Technique and Steps IF you like Folk Art type decor.......2005-12-02

The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.

5 out of 5 stars The Best For Beginners.......2002-09-20

I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and Experts.......2001-10-28

I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++

5 out of 5 stars Hard Cover Quality In a Paperback.......2000-09-22

Grab this book without hesitation!

I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.

When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!

The idea behind House Magic is simple: "To help you create a beautiful and loving home that the whole family can enjoy and to which you can invite company without having to explain yourself!" writes author Ariana. Talk about practical magic. This good witch's down-to-earth guide tackles the bane of housekeeping in the opening pages, with an entire chapter devoted to eliminating clutter--wardrobe excess, piles of papers, that glut of children's toys, and even those dust-catching knickknacks. Some of her advice is predictably New Agey, such as clear "air clutter" with a sage stick. Other times, she offers common sense: "Deal with mail as soon as possible." And sometimes, she's superstitious: "It is good advice to keep the toilet lid down at all times, so you won't flush away your good fortune." Most of the time, though, Ariana offers a compelling blend of witch wisdom, pagan feng shui, and astrology, including advice on color schemes, furniture placement, and how to fill your home with "auspicious" symbols and objects (such as citrine clusters, coins, and fish). For the Wiccan inclined, this makes an excellent housewarming gift, packed with playful yet surprisingly useful homemaking advice. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Can a rubber tree placed in the north part of the home bring calm? Could an aquarium behind the bed inadvertently invite robbers? Might amber purify a room by transforming negative energy to positive? In House Magic, Ariana explains these effects and more, introducing readers to pagan feng shui — Wiccan energy management for the home. Feng shui, witchcraft, and astrology are already familiar to many readers, but House Magic is the first book to bring these practices together. The purpose? To show how, by using a little bit of each, people can activate positive energy in their homes and, consequently, in their lives. Fun, playful, and practical, House Magic explains where not to place certain objects in a room; links specific astrological signs to decorating styles and habits of collecting; and shows readers how to create a beautiful space that attracts positive energy for themselves and their guests to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Something to start with before getting into the big books. .......2004-08-14

Could be considered a Wicca 101 easy reference guide (but that is a good thing). I really like the writing style. Much clearer than a lot of Wicca books out there.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time.......2003-11-21

Sorry if you liked this book, but there are soooo many others out there that are so much better and much more detailed. Try reading Shakti Gawain, Karen Rausch Carter, Carolyn Myss and Deepak Chopra. This author goes into astrology (and a lot of it is very wrong), and almost makes up her own chakra colors. She's more wrong than right. I strongly suggest you do your own research and try other authors. You don't have to "cast" you can simply affirm.

5 out of 5 stars House Magic.......2003-03-09

House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space is one of those indispensable little books that includes a wealth of wisdom. Author Ariana says that "there is such a diversity of information available from different sources and traditions that I thought an eclectic collection of ideas would help readers take control of their lives by getting their houses in order."

Although the focus is on living space, getting a house in order also puts a life in good order. Ariana includes lots of suggestions, but emphasizes that what's important is developing awareness of who you are and learning to follow your own intuition in eliminating all forms of clutter from your life.

She describes how to use techniques such as astrology, feng shui, plants, crystals, candles, and incense to create a harmonious environment full of positive energy. Each chapter ends with a section called "Bringing It All Together," which outlines the highlights of that chapter for quick reference.

Ariana reminds people that the first step is to know what they want. That puts them on the road to achieving it. Then they can use whatever seems right for bringing in the positive energy needed for turning dreams into reality.

"House Magic shows readers how to design their homes to fulfill personal needs and master the ability to display their own uniqueness using their homes as a medium." Anyone desiring to create that "perfect space" will discover that Ariana has provided an essential reference for choosing the best way to produce a "vibrant castle of creativity and warmth."

3 out of 5 stars Too general to be of much use.......2002-07-28

The author covers many different systems for making a house "work" physically and spiritually, but not in any real depth. The book's focus is extremely broad. Despite the reference in the title, the witchcraft angle is downplayed quite a bit, as there are numerous Christian references. I'm sure this gives the book wider sales appeal, but at the expense of providing a detailed treatment on any topic. It would make a cute housewarming gift, maybe, but buy books which specifically cover Feng Shui, herb lore, candle magick, etc if you want in-depth information. Cunningham's "The Magical Household" is a better bet if you're looking for general information on how to make your house a magickal home.

5 out of 5 stars A gem of a book, whether you believe in magic or not.......2002-01-31

A simple, well-written little book that's not just for witches! Written with humor and intelligence, it offers practical advice, not just folklore. In fact, it deals far more with energy flow than with superstition. Excellent basic book for anyone who wants to go beyond the basic happy home books out there.

Fabric, declares the author, is "the most exciting element" in decorating a room. Leaf through her attractive book and you'll see why. A wide range of styles is embodied here, from the opulence of a Renaissance-style hallway adorned in red silk to the lushness of creamy cotton drapes puddled on the floor to the contemporary lines of smartly striped Roman blinds to the rustic charm of gingham curtains. Melanie Paine explains how to choose, combine, manipulate, and paint on fabrics, as well as how to choose a style for window dressing, beds and bedding, and fabric coverings for walls and furnishings and ceilings. Although step-by-step directions are provided throughout for many of the items (such as various types of blinds, curtains, and bed covers), this is not a basic instructional how-to book. The New Fabric Magic is most successful and appealing as an idea book, filled with wonderful ways to use fabric to make rooms come alive.

I've had this book for over ten years, and have made several projects from it. It probably is not ideal for those with only basic sewing skills, as the projects describe proportions rather than measurements (so that they can be adapted to any home), but I have had good results. As a book to inspire, it is wonderful. Paine has created beautiful interiors and has many creative ideas for transforming spaces with fabric.

I don't own this book yet but I've probably checked it out at the library 3 or 4 times. I will buy it soon. I don't think the cover of the book does it justice.

Some of the projects are not so special but I really think the handmade paper ones are exquisite. I have made the string of lights project and was pleased. It would look very beautiful in a backyard for a night time party. Unfortunatly, I don't have the backyard.

I very much want to try making the unusal and truely magical looking projects such as "Icicles" made with plastic tubing, plastic wrap, and hair nets--guess you gotta see the photos to understand. I also want to make "Stars on Sticks", "Teepee Table Light", "Willow Fish Lantern", and especially "Flower Fairy Lantern. It would look so pretty in my daughter's bedroom.

    Book Description

Every room in your house can produce its own energy and personality. Painting the walls and arranging furniture is a beginning, but there's so much more you can do to make your home uniquely your own. You can imprint your heart energy in a room or even in a tiny space and ground it there. Simple Spells for Hearth and Home will help you ensure ease and camaraderie in your dining room, create abundance and good health in your kitchen, and generally enhance the radiance of every inch of your living space.

With this wonderful book at your fingertips, Barrie Dolnick, the founder of Executive Mystic, gives wise and delightful advice that can make any home a haven. Learn which materials and elements give ease to a room, how to create a welcoming space for a new baby, and how to harness nature's harmony, including which trees to plant around your home -- fig for fertility, almond for prosperity, and apple for love. These are just a few of the plentiful and spellbinding things that Barrie Dolnick has to share. There are spells for special occasions -- from Father's Day to Thanksgiving to Passover -- and spells for family gatherings; rituals for blessing a new home and for leaving a home you have loved. Simple Spells for Hearth and Home helps you recognize your power to influence and create a home blessed with the spirit of health, joy, and vitality.

    4 out of 5 stars Simple & Useful with a Disturbing Undercurrent.......2004-03-04

"Simple Spells for Hearth and Home: Ancient Practices for Creating Harmony, Peace, and Abundance" delivers exactly what the title promises--something not many books do. I enjoy the inclusion of various goddesses who can assist with magickal house work--especially the Roman goddess Vesta. The spirit of "Simple Spells for Hearth and Home" is light and inspirational--the spells are easy to accomplish. My only quibble with the book is shared with another reviewer--she constantly tries to "hard sell" the concept of using spells to people faithful to Judeo-Christianity. There isn't a problem with this, since magickal books need not and indeed should not be exclusive. I do however suspect that her core audience come from Earth-based paths (Wicca, Witchcraft, Hoodoo, Shamanism, etc) Dolnick's hard-sell routine comes off as a book selling tactic; her otherwise gentle voice becomes brassy. In the future, if Dolnick let her gentle voice lead the way rather than allowing it to be overpowered by the pursuit of personal abundance, her books would be even stronger.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book for wiccans!.......2002-06-12

4 out of 5 stars More Fun than Fung Shui.......2001-10-17

The title and subtitle sum up what this book is pretty well. A little bit spell book, a little bit decorating book, she talks about making a house a home through some effort on your part.

It's a nice little book with some nice ideas, but she seems to try a little too hard to take Pagan ideas to non-Pagan readers. Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, for instance, presented in a Pagan way might appeal to many Pagans, but not to many Christian or Jewish readers. It has a feel of effort to it, like she's trying to sell the book to a group that never visits the "New Age" section of the bookstore.

Still, things are presented in a very clear way, suggesting materials and moon phases for the most appropriate times for the spells. None of the materials are very exotic, so the spells are indeed accessible to anyone who is of a mind to try their hand at a little magic.

The index is quite good, but unfortunately no bibliography. Not a bad book if Hestia/Vesta-type rituals are important to you.

    4 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2000-04-14

I enjoyed this book very much and expect to use it quite often in the future. It's like Feng Shui but easier to understand and incorporate. I only wish there were more general spells (like how to create coziness, etc.) in the book.
