Save thousands of dollars making your own shades.......2001-03-06
This book was my primary reference while I made shades for 13 windows, saving thousands of dollars over having them made by a workroom. Not only did the book provide inspiration by use of many pictures, I found the instructions to be more than adequate.
Directions are difficult to follow.......1999-02-10
I've purchased this book and have found that the directions are not at all easy to follow. Details are left out, and diagrams are few and far between. I wouldn't recommend it.
Book Description
A handy fan of paint chips is an indispensable tool when choosing colors for decorating projects. And, when it comes to selecting fabrics for upholstery, drapes, pillows-anything to do with textiles-fabric swatches are the necessary equivalent. They are the spark behind dazzling creative ideas, and they make deciding between, say, a sumptuous jacquard tapestry and a 1920s art deco pattern both manageable and fun.
Swatches, by noted fabric experts Dorsey Sitley Adler and Robert D. Adler, provides the ultimate guidebook on color and pattern concepts for decoration, fashion, and craft. Featuring more than 400 fabric patterns, the book includes vintage and contemporary selections from the largest textile library in the United States. The swatches are organized by pattern type, everything from stripes and polka dots to paisleys and conversational prints. A series of special color and style groupings-Seaside Splendor and Pastel Palette, for example-add an extra touch of inspiration. In addition, the book features informative text describing the origins of and typical uses for each pattern type. With a user-friendly, "small-and-chunky" format, Swatches will serve decorators, designers, and anyone interested in pattern as an invaluable resource. AUTHOR BIO: Dorsey Sitley Adler and Robert D. Adler are the founders of the Textile Design Group, the largest privately owned textile library in the United States. With a collection of more than four million pattern swatches that ranges from 19th-century historical patterns to contemporary fabrics, the Textile Design Group serves customers including fashion houses and color forecasters. This is the Adlers' first book.

More for the Artsy Stamper..........2003-02-16
This is a wonderful resource, but frankly, for the more "artsy" stamper. I love the projects, techniques, and looks shown here, but if you're looking for clean and simple, this is not it. Not that the techniques are difficult -- they aren't -- it's just that the looks are very elegant. The book shows stamping on everything -- clothes, paper, clay, umbrellas, and more. You can transfer the techniques from these to other media if you know what you are doing and aren't afraid to try something new. Everything from funky to renaissance...Nice stuff, I like it, maybe you will, too.
Book Description
Charming florals or cool abstract patterns? White-on-white or a splash of brilliant color? Just like clothes make the man, fabric makes the furniture. House Beautiful understands that, and so the editors are letting sofas, chairs, settees, ottomans, lampshades, and more put on a “fashion show.” As in the magazine feature, witness how furniture can be completely transformed using several different fabrics. The magazine’s experts explain exactly how the choice of color and pattern affects the furniture’s appearance. For example, stripes on a sofa highlight the couch’s shape and give it a contemporary flair, while a floral pattern de-emphasizes the form and adds traditional country charm. A range of styles are included. Details on fabric content, technical terms, decorating pitfalls, and upholstering tips make this the ideal reference.

Buyer Beware.......2001-08-14
While the contents of this book are beautifully displayed and the instructions are relatively easy to follow, the book is a consolidation of the four individual Home Furnishing Workbooks -- pillows, bed linens, window treatments and lampshades. Unfortunately, that is not indicated in the information presented here. Therefore, if you own them, purchasing this book would be a waste of money.
A broad overview of many decorating ideas.......2001-08-11
This book has sections on bedding, lampshades, curtains, and pillows. Each section has several ideas of great-looking projects that you can make at home. It never really occured to me that I could make my own lampshades in fabrics to match my room! The projects are all ingredibly simple, also... but the finished projects look stunning!

Look through my window.......2004-07-28
If you've got a nice, sunshiny yard, why not gussy it up a little with one of the contemporary curtain ensembles that decorators now call, window treatments? I found Creative Publishing's guide to be insightful and a true resource, it's good even with the basement windows that my X put inwhile trying to give a basement woodshop some natural light, but on the other hand nosy neighbors mean that you have to have some cloth over the glass.
Whether your view overlooks a garden in the country, or St. Patrick;s Cathedral in the city, you'll want a book like this here "More Creative Window Treatments" so you can look at the color photos and decide for yourself, and for your family, which setting would look nicest. And then the book gives you complete instructions for how to sew it together yourself. Or perhaps you can enlist the assistance of the birds and mice Disney's Cinderella used to help her whip together her gown!
Only if you can sew..........2002-07-01
While this book does have a few pictures, they seem quite old. The one or two items I liked didn't have any instructions for. If you are not a sewer, than this book is not for you. I found the book very confusing - definitely written for the person with sewing background. Sorry.
Great ideas, directs you to a professional window treatment.......2001-02-05
This was one of three books I purchased on window treatments; I turn to this one for advice and direction. Step by step directions with pictures on such topics as installing hardware, including hanging a mounting board, to the basics of sewing. Great ideas for rod pocket curtains and custom shades. I used it to create two different window treatments, scarf swag and shoji-style screen. Each project tells you how to measure and materials required. Due to the great instructions, both treatments turned out very professional!!

Sew until your heart is content. This is the first book I pick up if I am about to give a room a quick face lift. When I cannot bear to look at that old sofa for one more minute, I can find a way to make a cover for it in just hours. I have used it to cover dining room chairs for unexpected dinner parties and whipped up a bed duvet for the guestroom in just one day. I will not let anyone borrow this book from my library. Sorry.
Book Description
With over a thousand decorating tips and ideas and twenty-two do-it-yourself projects, this book is a discriminating home decorators must-have. Its step-by-step diagrams, easy-to-follow instructions, glossary, and extensive directory of suppliers gives readers the savvy and inspiration they need to transform their living spaces into beautiful homes.

Still Using This Beautiful book a decade later.......2005-09-10
Having seen that Katrin Cargill will be making an appearance nearby my home, I visited Amazon.com to learn of her latest publications. She has done much since I learned of her talents over a decade ago! So why do I write my fellow Amazon'ites a review? Because this is one book that even after a decade's time I return to every time I've a window or even a room to dress. Her studied and effected ideas are tasteful, graceful, and yet sophisticatedly creative. Some earlier reviews online here (e.g., early 1990s) caution new sewers about the limited instructions/projects for beginner-level sewing. While this is true, this book was indispensible to me in the 1990s when I was a beginner at sewing because it's ideas and style can be adapted by anyone. That being said, this lovely photo-book belongs on your shelf whether you are a do-it-yourself, a bed-reader-dreamer, or a designer using someone as for your labor. What's more, this remains the case even after a decade's time of styles changing.
Really nice photos and inspirational, but not easy to follow.......2000-10-25
This book is really a beautiful book. The pictures of fabric being used in various rooms in houses are all very nicely done and the use of fabric is really stunning. Unfortunately, while pictures are nice when it comes to projects with fabric, instructions go a lot further than pictures of the finished product. There are approximately 10-15 projects that actually have instructions in this book. Everything else is just pictures of really nice applications of fabric.
How are the projects with instructions? Of the projects that actually have instructions, the majority of them look really neat. Unfortunately, I think many of them would be difficult to complete because the instructions are fairly weak. Little to no assistance is provided on how to customize the project.
Who is the audience of this book? This book does not seem to be a good fit for beginning sewers or even those with a moderate level of experience. I think expert sewers might be able to use this book more readily because they would be able to transform the pictures into action. To me, this book is actually more of a coffee table book than a real project book and not really practical. Good inspiration value, low ability to apply your inspiration value.
Also, the part that I disliked the most about this book was the section devoted to curtains. Yes, this is a major area that people want to work on for home decoration BUT there are so many books out there dedicated to just curtains (including a really wonderful one by the same author) that the section in this book on curtains seemed really pointless.
If you are a really experienced sewer and need inspiration OR if you are having someone else decorate your house for you and want ideas for an expert to implement, this would be a really good book for you. If you are a beginning sewer, this book will probably overwhelm you by giving you lots of really great ideas that will be too hard for you to implement or figure out how to implement.
Worth every penny........1999-08-09
Not only is this book beautifully done, but also, the fabric projects are well-presented and easy to undertake. Projects range from storage solutions to elegant interior decorating projects one can do with fabric. I would recommend this book to interior decorators (amateur or professional), seamstresses and upholsterers, and to those with an interest in textiles and their various uses in the home.
Great to spark the imagination!.......1998-08-01
Great ideas to spark the thought processes, I refer to it often to get my mind to think in a different way to solve decorating issues. The projects do run the spectrum in difficulty but I do believe that sewing skills should be intermediate for most.
