Not what I expected ..........2007-01-29

Taunton has a very good reputation for their publications so I thought this would be a great book to help me with several projects I will be undertaking. It was a disappointment. There was nothing innovative or unique about the ideas presented. The cabinet styles were either very basic or so custom they did not provide realistic options. If you are looking for innovative or creative ideas for a realistic cabinet project ... look elsewhere.

Fell short.......2006-10-30

I felt the sample of this book was not a good indication of it's contents. Most of the built-ins shown in the book are from a Room-View with the built in partially obstructed and with little detail shown. I wasn't looking for plans to build, but I would have expected more. If you like the details level shown on the cover of the book, then this will be right up your alley, other wise, the book will probably fall short of your expectations.

Great ideas! .......2006-07-22

To make the most of our new home, I was looking for ideas for custom made cabinetry and other storage options.
Although the style of quite a few examples are not to my taste, I still got enough ideas and inspiration. Also a plus; the book gives you tips for matching built-ins to the rest of the room, to get a coordinated look.
My favourite chapters: Passages (great storage options to be found there!!) Window seats (you will see small window seats as well as really large ones) Workspaces (they show you practical workspaces even in tiny closets) and Utility Areas. In the kitchen chapter I liked the small details, like the pantry and appliance garage.

I want to install severeal built-ins in my older home, as space is limited. This book definitely gave me lots of ideas. The pictures are excellent and really provide inspiration - whether you copy exactly or adapt the ideas to meet your needs. Full of ideas and inspiration - not a how-to.

This books offers a number of well thought out bathrooms, mostly modern in design, accompanied with beautiful photographs. The styles tend towards the minimal so don't consider this book if ou are more traditional in sensibility./

I haven't finished reading it yet but so far love it. It has many photos along with a paragraph about why/how this works - the type of landscape and things to make sure you do/don't do. I am buying a copy for my sister for xmas.

Although this book wasn't overly helpful for the project I purchased it for, the sample pictures and table of contents were very accurate sampling of the books contents. I'm giving 3 stars as "no worse and no better than expected" rating.

Good, But Not Perfect!.......2005-08-11

I really like this series of books that range from this "Storage" one to "Bathrooms," "Family Houses," etc... but I am giving this book a 4 because it shows alot of houses that seem to be beyond the means of most people that I know around my area. This book also likes to tell you to build storage in every little crack/space that does not currently have something useful going for it. I am giving it 4 stars, because it does inform you of all of the different types of devices that are currently (as of the book being published) available to help you make storage possible in nooks and crannies. It also gives you ideas and suggestions about how you can make more use out of the storage that you already have, by redesigning the shelving to make it more attractive also. Try not to read it all at once though, because I started to gloss over stuff just to get to the end of the book. Take it a step at a time and it will be a great start for you.

Not for an average house.......2005-07-07

I was really excited about this book before I opened it. I was very disappointed to see that it really only covers larger houses which already have space available. All the pictures show rooms with high to very high ceilings, entrance ways, and alot of open space. Unfortunately, I think, that the average house is much smaller, with less room to work with & lower ceilings, not every place has utility rooms, verandas or entrance ways to utilize. Even the bathrooms were larger than most I've seen. Also, many houses do not even have very much extra wall space due to small room dimensions, windows, doorways & possibly a fireplace. Try to work around that - that's what I was expecting to see, I guess, more variety in the types of homes. If you do get this book, be prepared to renovate.

At least one idea for everyone.......2003-06-16

This book's title is absolutely accurate. It is chock full of ideas, both in the text and the pictures, for innovative storage all over the house. Another important thing to me is that the writers of this book realize that it is often the details, such as the height of a bench or the placement of a drawer, that can make or break a storage solution. They encourage the homeowner throughout the book to choose the solutions and dimensions that fit their house and their lifestyle. Function is the No. 1 priority, but form is not shortchanged at all, as the photos prove.

While some of it does not apply to my situation, I found that there were at least a few areas -- most notably the mud room and why it's such a great idea -- that were beneficial to me. I had already thought a lot about storage in the house I will be building, so it probably was not as helpful to me overall as it would be for someone who is either starting to think about this subject, or who has an existing house with storage problems. That being said, the photos and the writing are both high quality, and no basic room in the house is left uncovered, so this book is definitely a 5-star.

If you own Taunton's other books, you may recognize a few of the photos from them. However, most of them are not duplicates of the other two Tauntons that I have, and even the ones that are the same are covered completely differently.

I have only one complaint with this book: There is no index in the back. There is a page of resources, which provides some books and some Web sites, and a long list of photographer credits, but I would like to have seen some sort of an index of keywords or specific storage ideas. In spite of this shortcoming, the book is so logically put together that it still deserves all five stars.

Joanne Bouknight's Home Storage Idea book is a wonderful book. I have discovered so many great ways to solve all the storage problems we had in our home. My carpenter loves all the ideas we are having him add to our home. Some of my favorite ideas are the Bedside Storage on page 157,the Graduated depth bookshelf on page 139,stair-landing entertainment center on page 121,stair tread and bench room on page 27 and finally the space between the studs bookshelf nook for small objects on page 114.
My friends can't wait to add a few storage ideas to their homes as well. The best part of the book are the great pictures and way Bouknight writes. Her style is so readable, just as if she's talking to me in person. Great Job Taunton Press!

I am opening a preschool and I used this book to get ideas for unique decorations. I got some great ideas out of this book to use even in a school setting. The book is based mostly on home spaces, but you can use the ideas anywhere.

When I picked up this book I recognized it for what it is, an Idea Book. This is not a book with plans or steps on how to create the looks, but I think it offers what it says it will...Ideas.

The book includes beautiful color photographs that feature bathrooms, playrooms and even outdoor spaces. It also includes incorporating family rooms and kitchens with more child-focused features. Basically, the book covers almost every room in a house.

Many of the rooms (playrooms, bedrooms) are bigger than my master suite, LOL so I think that if you are looking for exactly the size you need it might be a little difficult. With a little imagination and creativity, I think you can take even these huge rooms and adapt them for a smaller room. I really like the bathroom section for kids and some of the bedrooms seemed fairly easy to do. I also like the organization of closets that were included in the book.

If you have a bottomless budget and lots of square footage, this is a great book for finding ideas on how to decorate for kids. If your budget is limited, I still think this book will give you some good ideas, but a different book might be more useful if you are looking for step-by-step instructions.

I was hoping to find ideas to help us in renovating our son's room. Unfortunately, most ideas in this book would require a tremendous amount of capital investment and certainly are out of reach for many people.

However, we were able to grasp some ideas which we'll try to tailor down to our middle class standards.

The book is generally well layed out. Don't expect any plans, you are expected to develop your own ideas and it should help you accomplish this. Overall, the title says it all.

This book has many creative ideas. But, they are mostly ideas that would require major remodeling, would be impossible, or would only be helpful when designing your blue prints. There are decorating ideas, but overall, this book is geared more toward the architect. An example is an in-the-wall loft, and another is a split level bedroom. Also, the rooms are rarely your average square bedroom but instead have very creative floor plans. SO- the book is creative and attractive, but not very useful.

Lots of expensive storage ideas.......2006-09-07

"301 Stylish Storage Ideas" is part of the Better Homes and Gardens collection of books. I purchased it hoping for some novel storage ideas for my new home. Overall, the book is fairly well done; however, as other reviewers have noted, most of the tips involve pricey permanent storage, such as built-in bookcases, bathroom cabinets, and kitchen islands. If you plan on having high-end built-in storage added to your home, then this book might be useful.

However, readers seeking less costly or more temporary storage ideas should look elsewhere. Most of these tips primarily consist of placing baskets and bins in various places around the home - not particularly innovative. My home is newly built, so I don't want the incur expense right now of adding built-ins to several rooms with storage needs. As a result, these tips really didn't help me much.

On a positive note, the pictures are quite nice; even though it was published in 1998, everything still looks fairly current. Unfortunately, the pictures typically show an entire room incorporating several types of storage, and items were not numbered to correspond to the accompanying tip. Thus, it was sometimes difficult to locate in the pictures specific storage items described in the text. Overall, I enjoyed looking through this book and seeing what people do for storage, but I won't be incorporating any of these concepts into my home any time soon.

When I first bought this book, I was hoping to find new ideas for my new walk-in closet.. unfortunately the book wasn't all that.. It didn't seem to have "301" ideas.. all it seemed to show are normal photos of everyday closets and storage places..

Not what I expected.......2004-01-22

I thought this would be a book on novel ways to stash your stuff. It was... but I was looking for ideas on cool containers and other low-budget ways to fit more storage space in my one-bedroom apartment. It instead is a book on good ideas (with great photos) if you're already tearing out a wall in your house, as in great for long term construction plans, but not so helpful for those with a more transient, non-house-owning lifestyle. If I had my own house, I would have given 4 stars. Apartment dwellers, look elsewhere.

Great for Australian Home Owners Too.......2002-05-22

As an Australian Home Renovator I'm always a little concerned about how relevant an American book will be to me. This book gave me no such concern. I initially brought the book for some general storage ideas. What impressed me were the fantastic photo's of solutions that not only help control clutter but also add great design features to my home. I especially like the transformation of an old built in wardrobe (or closet) into a tiny library. A fantastic, attractive solution for my book storing dilemma! Also easily achieved in the small space of a 2 bedroom apartment where some rooms have duel duties.

Like most of the BH&G decorating books, I've found this one to be an exceptional value. Every page has full color photos and interresting ideas for making the most out of a small amount of space. The book centers around a "new traditional" or "eclectic" style, but most ideas could probably be adapted to fit any decorating style. Includes a page titled, "Style and Your Television" - I don't know anybody that couldn't use some help there! This book would probably be most helpful for those either considering remodeling or construction, or those with some carpentry skills, but there are some great ideas for construction-free storage also. Worth the money!
