Topics covered include:
- How color creates ambiance and atmosphere
- Using color to give a small room the illusion of space and depth
- How to create the feeling of warmth and light with color
- Distinctive color schemes inspired by nature, art, travel and even a favorite possession.
The book also includes a variety of color combination palettes that can be used with different materials for refreshingly original color schemes.
The Color Scheme Bible is an essential handbook for home decorators and interior designers.

My New Home Decorating Bible.......2007-08-22
I bought several books trying to help me get my home decorated in my style, but not really knowing my style. I have never really had enough money to decorate a home before so after 10 + years of marriage, I wanted this home to show a bit of my personality. This was the key ingredient I needed to spark my imagination. The color combinations really do have emotions that are triggered and helped me to find the right colors for the moods I want in my home.
One fair warning, after reading this, you may end up wanting to go with colored trim. We are learning quick, changing your trim color is either time consuming (if you are a diy) or expensive (if you hire it done). But so far it has been worth it; the colors really play off each other. Even one of the painters I had give me a bid wants a copy of Color Scheme Bible.
The other decorating books will end up more of coffee table items for looking, but not very helpful. You can't copy someone else's style when you know you have your own. It just helps to have something to spark that style, and since I didn't have a treasured fabric or plate or something that designers like to use, I had to use this Bible.
My English written book came with several pages in German, though. Hopefully, they have resolved that problem. But I wasn't willing to part with it long enough to return it and wait for a new one to be sent, it has been a well used resource for my new home.
Great Inspiration.......2007-06-14
This book has a lot of ideas and inspiration about colours. Some schemes are daring, but all of them seems an professional work!
Colour combination chart in spiral book form with hard cover.......2007-06-08
A book that is more for carrying around when colour schemes are being planned. It is small in size. Each page has an imaginative and inspiring title that distinguishes one combination of colour from another. It does not have many interior design photographic examples of the combinations suggested. It is like a palette with suggestions.
just one little thing I didn't like.......2007-04-13
The color combinations are nice, but the photographs do not represent
all different kinds of design styles, only one, simple and sparse. Most people don't live in homes that are so plain, so it is impossible to know how these colors would look in more expensive "designer" spaces.
Just what I needed!.......2007-03-01
I love color and I was always working to try to find color schemes for rooms in our home and often ended up finding that I'd picked something that felt lifeless or didn't fit us. This book is just exactly what I was looking for! I stumbled across it in the library when we moved to our most recent residence. What a find! The authors include dozens of potential palettes along with information about the mood, potential executions and inspirations behind the choices they offer. This is now my secret decorating weapon. For the first time, I feel like a grown-up when I set up a home!

Book Description
It's the ultimate escape fantasy: Trade in the rat race for life on a tropical island and all the languid luxury that it evokes. For India Hicks and David Flint Wood, the dream became reality when, after high-profile careers-she as a fashion model, he as an advertising executive-the couple left the city behind for the Bahamas. Five years and three children later, the husband-and-wife team have impeccably restored three houses and one hotel. Fusing traditional European design with Asian, African, and Caribbean influences, the resulting interiors reflect their love of intense color and their keen sense of style-inherited on India's side from her father, the renown interior designer David Hicks, and further enhanced by the family's travels.
In Island Life, the secrets of these sumptuous, unique homes-used as locations for Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, and Vogue magazine, among others-are revealed in intimate detail. With panoramic color photographs, David Loftus captures not only the eclectic combinations of antiques, flea market finds, and modern furnishings, but also the overall ambiance of the tropics. For those who share David and India's dream, this is where to start planning.

Never received...ordered 3 times!!!.......2007-06-19
You may or may not receive this book. Like another reviewer, my order was never completed. I ordered it THREE times, waited 6 weeks each time...and then was informed my order was cancelled because it was unavailable. The last time I ordered it, I called them and they "assured" me it was "IN STOCK". Later, I was notified it was unavailable once again. Its bizarre! Don't hold your breath waiting for this one. It may be a great book, but I will apparently never know.
A book to take you away from everyday life.......2007-01-03
I found this book an absolute dream. The pictures are superb and the text is so unpretentious and simple. I loved the way the family has created such a simple and beautiful house (or houses) unlike so many of the gaudy mansions of the rich that inhabit the Bahamas.
I have visited Harbor Island and the lifestyle appears so slow and easy that it really appears to be a paradise. India points out though that there is a price to be paid. The climate does make it difficult to maintain property.
In summary, I loved the book, the words and the pictures and I read it from cover to cover in a little under two days. It left we wanting a simpler, more balanced life and sunshine!
A Favorite.......2006-07-31
I find myself reaching for this book over and over again. In it the authors generously give us a glimpse of the life they have made on a small island in the Bahamas. With a lot of hard work and no pretension, they have gotten it mostly just right. Their houses are neither overdone nor underdone, but pleasing to the eye, soothing and liveable. Highly recommended.
Never got item - it was unavailable.......2006-07-30
Never got item - waited several weeks and then was notified.
Nice to look at....PERIOD.......2004-06-27
The cover was very appealing. First impressions etc;. The inside photos even more so. The writing however sounded like the ramblings of a spoiled child living in an unreachable reality sometimes and at other times, the snobbery of an aristocracy only appreciated in the mind of the writer and those who really believe that paradise can only be created by the writer.
I live in the Bahamas and so yes I have a paradise of my own, but does anyone really care about 'my personal paradise' so much that they would read about it. I think not. The thing that makes simple beauty, well simply beautiful is simply leaving it alone.
Final thot; Nice to look at.....PERIOD.

Book Description
One of the most celebrated works on mystical theology in existence, as timely today as when St. Teresa of Avila wrote it centuries ago, this is a treasury of unforgettable maxims on self-knowledge and fulfillment.

This is mystical theology. If are a researcher like I am, this is an awesome book
Knowing Christ.......2007-01-10
An excellent book that deals with the process of knowing and surrendering ones life to Jesus Christ. One is struck by the deep passion to have an intimate relationship with Jesus and what a person is willing to forsake for that relationship. One will not agree with all that is said but will be challenged to describe what you do believe and how does it apply to your own life. It is a book that needs to be read several times to mine the riches of the truth.
The Interior Castle.......2006-11-09
This book is excellent! Very helpful in drawing the reader closer to God.
The House of My Father Has Many Rooms.......2006-08-12
St. Teresa is one of my personal favorite saints. As a Carmelite nun in the 1500s, she was gifted with a vision from God to write this beautiful book. In this book, the soul journeys through seven rooms, each with a lesson of spiritual wisdom that draws us closer to God. In a ringing refutation of Pascal's bargain, she says that, "the most essential thing is that we should love God without any motive of self-interest." Love of God is an end unto itself, and we should not love God because we dread the pains of Hell and the loss of Heaven. The similarity of the Interior Castle, the controlling metaphor, to Jesus's quote that the "Mansion of My Father has many rooms," is beguiling and appealing. The only thing that bothers me is the subtle comparison to alchemy texts, such as the Christian Rosencrantz text, but this can surely be set aside in the light of such a beautiful book.

Book Description
Showcasing 22 beautiful homes in Provence and the Cote d'Azur, "Provencal Escapes" is an abundant source of inspiration and practical decorative ideas, making it a feast of delight for all those who are seduced by the thought - and the reality - of the Provencal way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Good but wanted more.......2007-07-16
A nice inspiration source for charming, rustic country french design. I wanted more out of the book though - perhaps photos of full rooms rather than vignettes of tables and kitchen counters. It makes it hard to get a sense of design style without a full room effect in my opinion. The book does ooze charm and if you have other books on this style and just want a little extra something this would be ok. If however you really need a good book to learn all about french country style I would not suggest this one.
STUNNING!.......2007-02-26
This book oozes with charm! The homes featured in this book are very old and beautifully brought back to life by its owners while respecting the history and integrity of these buildings. The title "Provencal Escapes" is appropriate since this book lets you escape into a dreamy and ancient world of Provence. The photos are gorgeous and you feel that you are actually walking through some of these homes. This book is a must for any fan of Provence or just of beautiful escapes. I highly recommend it!
Magnificant Redecoration of Older French Homes.......2005-10-12
This magnificant book consists of photographic studies of some 22 homes in the Provence and Cote d'Azur regions of France. These homes are primarily older (as much as 300 years) that have been seriously redecorated to make them into jewels of plesant styling.
For the most part, the redecoration of the homes has been to retain (or return to) the styling of the time they were built. Magnificant old beams show off well with modern appliances and decorations. The traditional outside of the houses hides the modern interiors. The original builders could not have imagined things we take for granted such as electricity that now has been fitted into their houses.
Redoing an old house is easily as expensive as modern construction, so these houses have not been done for cost savings but for other reasons like living in a part of history.
While this book concentrates on this region of France, many of the techniques used in these houses could well be applied to houses in the United States where old houses be they farm or city center can be made into something unique and wonderful.

Avoid the price-gougers. TAN is reprinting soon!.......2006-04-22
It is more than a bit shameful, the price gouging that's been going on for this book while out-of-print. YAY, though. TAN is reprinting and will be available very soon.
YEAH!!! TAN is Republishing.......2006-04-18
As a Catholic priest, I think it was rather sinful the prices people were charging for an used copy of this book (the 1 Volume edition). Hundreds of dollars for a book that sold for $40 just a year or two ago? I guess it does atest to the great value of this book.
Well I have good news; TAN Books has decided to republish this work, in a new one volume, leather-bound edition. They hope to start shipping them on April 30, 2006. They will list for $48, but they are on sale now for $40.
a precious resource for Christian contemplation.......2005-12-31
This book is the best one on Christian contemplation I've ever read. It is a perennial source of insight into God's love, without soft-pedalling the frightening consequences of sin. I hope to find it in print again, and will buy several copies right away for friends. Too bad about the price-gouging going on now: it's a wonderful part of any Catholic library but wait 'til there are enough used copies out there for the price to drop below the outrageous $250 or more for a copy requested by certain used booksellers. I bought mine for $31.50 two years ago, new. Hope that Loreto comes through in Jan 2006.
I've heard good things about this book..........2005-12-21
And desire to purchase it. But with all due respect to the people charging many hundreds of dollars for a used copy, this book is being re-published by Loreto in January 2006.

A 'must have' for all Catholics.......2005-10-14
I am a Secular Discalced Carmelite, and this is a MUST for those of us who have chosen this contemplative way of life. It is a shame that TAN has ceased publishing this book, since it is now very difficult to obtain. I have several on order through Amazon, but they have them on backorder, because TAN won't publish them. Please, please, TAN! Publish this much-needed book again, or turn the rights over to a publisher that WILL!

Book Description
Celebrated for almost five centuries as a master of spiritual literature, 16th-century saint, Teresa of Avila, is one of the most beloved religious figures in history.
Overcome one day by a mystical vision of a crystal castle with seven chambers, each representing a different stage in spiritual development, Teresa immediately wrote The Interior Castle. Probably her most important and widely studied work, it guides the spiritual seeker through each stage of development until the soul's final union with the divine. Free of religious dogma, this modern translation renders St. Teresa's work a beautiful and practical set of teachings for seekers of all faiths in need of spiritual guidance. It also places this classic in a contemporary context, reasserting its spiritual and literary importance even after more than 400 years.
Customer Reviews:
Translation? No, re-write........2007-10-15
If you want to know what St. Theresa wrote, DON'T GET THIS VERSION. I ended up throwing it away it was that bad.
This "translation" is horrendous and has a clear agenda - it really represents a re-write rather than a translation. The "translator" tries to change what Theresa says by divorcing her writings from her beliefs. It removes concepts that are central to St. Theresa's spirituality - the teachings of the Church, obedience to one's superior, struggles with Satan, sin and evil.
DO read a faithful version. I recommend the E. Allison Peers translation (published by Image). It is far superior and points out difference in past translations. The Peers translation is also available on Amazon.
An authentic modern voice.......2007-08-12
This translation feels as if written with the spirit and vision of Teresa de Avila. Starr's flowing language is natural, vernacular, accessible and poetic. I wish I had found this translation first. It feels as if Teresa is sitting across from us in a private space, and we are listening to a wise soul-mate. The use of allegory and metaphor ring true. An extraordinary work.
The Interior Castle, translation by Mirabai Starr.......2007-08-09
This is a brilliant translation. I work as a spiritual director and have recommended this and her other books to all my "directees." But more than that-- it reads like a novel. Such a difference from the stilted formal translations of earlier centuries. It brings St. Theresa alive, and as you read you'll feel you are having a spiritual experience yourself. You put down the book resonating, and her words will stay with you for days.

Universal guidance from a medieval Catholic.......2007-04-26
About three years ago, I became interested in reading what other women had to tell me about prayer. Teresa of Avila sounded particularly inspiring. A Catholic nun told me that few people can understand what Teresa wrote, but nonetheless I decided to read Interior Castle. My local independent bookstore (Kepler's in Menlo Park!) had several translations. I selected Mirabai Starr's translation precisely because, in her words, she "took the liberty... to soften some of [Teresa's] more loaded religious vocabulary."
All translations are, to some extent, interpretations. In this case, the translator was aware of her motives and, since I am not a medieval Catholic (or even a modern one), I was comfortable with those motives. Mirabai Starr writes that she did strive to "immerse [herself] in the spirit of [Teresa's] work" and prayed to "convey the message truly."
Teresa's main analogy, of the soul as a crystal castle with God dwelling at the center, is very powerful although I have come to reframe it in less architectural and more personal terms. Over time, I have discovered Teresa's most important suggestion: she frequently advises her nuns to know themselves. She insists that without self-knowledge and the resulting humility, it is not possible to make progress in prayer.
This translation has given me access to a perspective on the soul's journey to God that I would probably not have been to appreciate in another translation. I am very grateful to Mirabai Starr for making the words of this mystic available to me.
Although I still stand in the open doorway of the "first dwelling," I have come to love Teresa and to think of her as my teacher.
A Gift From God.......2007-03-12
Starr shares the wisdom, heart and soul of St. Teresa. I specifically recommend this book to non-Catholics and non-Christians who want to enter the mind of a great Christian mystic. I don't think of this translation as "New Age" or "Neo-Pagan." I prefer to think of it as a universal, InterSpiritual, and God-loving tool kit for living in the 21st century.

Best book for ideas on interiors.......2007-03-22
My wife and I are getting started on designing the interior of our new home. To this end, I visited three bookstores browsing through about 40 books for ideas on interior decoration. This book stood out as having the most inspiring and tasteful designs, as well as providing a large number and variety of photos, all at a very good price. Highly recommended. As one other reviewer pointed out, written text is limited, but this is made up for by the superior quantity and quality of photos. The book more than serves its purpose. For written guides on interior design, I plan to purchase: "The Home Design Planner" by Katherine Sorrell.

Customer Reviews:
Geared to contemporary kitchen lovers.......2007-08-16
I do not often write reviews on books but I was just so disappointed with this one. First off I found the kitchens in this book uninspired and many of them just impractical. For example there are more then a couple kitchens in this book with either no upper cabinets or just 2 or 3. What is that about? I will say that if and only if you are really into super contemporary kitchens, I mean some of them looked like they were out of some futuristic movie, you may be able to justify the pricetag to yourself, otherwise pass this one up.
Pictures for inspiration........2007-05-14
The title is the very reason I wanted the book. As I decorate/design different rooms of my house, I've found that I love to look through pictures to serve as inspiration pieces. My latest venture is a 700 sq. ft. addition, part of which is an eating area. I was able to use Joan Kohn's kitchens to really pull together something to strive for!
not MY kitchen.......2005-11-24
Advice is ok, but the photographed kitchens easily cost $200,000 or more. Not everyone has 25 foot vaulted ceilings with views or $15k Viking stoves.
If your planning on designing a masterpiece and live in Malibu or Manhatten, then this is your book. If your like me, and will end up at Lowes, you may find "Kitchens That Work" by Edic more interesting.
Suitable for modern Asian kitchens too!.......2005-10-13
Good coverage of various aspects in a kitchen that needs to be considered when renovating a new house. Lots of pictures of beautiful kitchens and it applies to modern Asian-style cooking as well.... except the wooden floors used in most of the examples. Wooden timber floors are a no-no to an Asian kitchen. I would recommend this book if you're renovating or remodelling.
The guide to creating your dream kitchen.......2004-10-26
Joan Koh, the hostess/writer/associate producer of "Kitchen Design" and "Bed & Bath Design" evokes a domestic goddess comfort zone, so that the reader wants to step into the cover illustration, sit down at the granite kitchen island/breakfast station with a cup of java and pick Kohn's brain about how we can stop being afraid of having a kitchen that we (a) enjoy being in, (b) enjoy cooking in, (c) don't mind showing the in-laws, and (d) can create without breaking the bank.
Sitting in your own kitchen while reading this book is a great first step to overcoming "kitchen anxiety". Whether Kohn guides you through the various stages with checklists galore, questions to ask yourself (do you want a kitchen for show, or will you cook Thanksgiving dinner? Do you want the kids to feel welcome?), and over 230 stunning photos of real-life kitchens, as well as the inside scoop from designers, architects and decorators. Yes, you can have a good relationship with your contractor!
In part one, Kohn gives the overall broad picture, the blueprint if you will, with seven chapters on design essentials: vision (first and foremost), essential kitchen design elements, working with what you have, budget, ideas, style, and the design team. In part two, she delves into your vital tools: the function, the raw space, your floor plan, your personal style, and your personality.
Kohn's inviting photographs, easy to understand user-friendly format, and expertise take the nightmare out of creating the recipe for your dream kitchen.

Wonderful pictures. For the price, you can't beat the quality of this book. The information is given in short simple decriptions; you're not going to learn to be a master gardener reading this book.
