Decent Intro to Fasting.......2007-09-30
For beginners only. Experienced fasters need not apply, unless you want to read some testimonies. All in all, you could do without though. As for beginners, this book does do a good job of creating excitement, enthusiasm, and a desire to fast. It is very fundamental. So if you're just starting, go for it. If you've been in this for a while, there's nothing new here.
Top recommendation for fasting: The Rewards of Fasting by Mike Bickle
Fast and Pray and Love and Forgive .......2007-06-07
I am all for praying and fasting and that's the reason I bought this book and for the sections of this book that actually deal with praying and fasting, which is perhaps a third of this book, I give this book five stars. The sections of the book that deal with praying and fasting talk about the benefits of fasting, how to begin and end a fast, different kinds of fasting, some wonderful experiences that the author had, as well as quotes some excerpts from the Bible.
The rest of this books is focused on church, world politics and the author's crusades in different parts of the world, as well as quotations from the Bible that deal with war and destricution and frankly speaking,
I find this in contrast with the teachings of Jesus, who taught about love and peace and forgiveness. In that respect I much prefer books by Matthew Fox and Annalee Skarin, which are written in the spirit of the teachings of Jesus and the Sermon on the Mount "Blessed are the peacemakers, between neighbors and between nations, who have a peaceful mind to resolve human discrepancies. They should be the treasurers of divine peace from above in order to provide this peace for others who shall be sons of God."
Without a doubt, the best book on fasting today!.......2007-03-30
There are a lot of books written on fasting, but none like this! The author, Mahesh Chavda, is an ex-Hindu who gave his heart, mind, body and soul to Christ. This is not a "dry" read - there are many personal accounts of miracles that will build your faith! The author has lived out what he writes.
The list of benefits of fasting is so clear and so Biblically based that even if you only read that one chapter in the book, it could change your life. Mahesh's message that there is power in fasting and prayer that is not available in simply praying cannot be ignored! Believers who desire to be more like Christ and to serve others more effectively will not be disappointed in this wonderful study on one of the Biblical disciplines of the faith. As Mahesh reminds us, when Jesus refers to fasting, he says "When you fast..." not "if you fast." He that has an ear to hear, listen to what The Spirit is saying to The Church.
THE VERY BEST!.......2007-02-17
This is the best book I've ever read on this subject matter. From the foundation laid for understanding the premise for fasting/prayer to all aspects of why and the countless benefits of and reasons for fasting. It has been said that most Christians would volunteer for an IRS tax audit before they would volunteer for an organized fast @ their local church; this book will definetely challenge that mind set. Also, and most importantly to the Believer, all declarations are Biblically based with examples from the scripture not the authors opinions or musings. This is a be all you can be type of book, whiners be warned, myself included. uld be dishonest.
The Hidden Power of Prayer and Fasting.......2006-03-13
This is a very inspirational book. It touched my heart. Anyone who wants to be closer to God or get closer to God, this book is for you. This will open your heart and mind.
Book Description
This fascinating guide to the inner journey offered by the Passover Seder evening incorporates a holistic approach to Judaism, which activates the four worlds of the individual: the world of action, the world of emotion, the world of intellect, and the world of spirit. It weaves a beautiful tapestry, illuminating the treasures available within Passover and the Jewish yearly festival cycle.

Everything you ever needed to know and more.......2007-05-22
This probably should NOT be labelled as a Haggadah, per se; it is an extremely in depth study of every aspect of the Passover Seder. While it is an excellent source of information, it is something to be studied long before Seder and could not possibly be used as the traditional text during the ceremony. I found it to be quite inspirational, though, and pulled some of the text out for use during our Seder for contemplation and to spark conversation regarding, as the title asks, "how will you be different this Passover?".
Extremely thought provoking........2007-05-14
I'm still reading through it, even though Passover's long over. Lots of interesting interpretations that I'd never learned before, about all aspects of Passover and the Haggadah.
Even for tradtionalists.......2007-03-15
Michael Kagan's take on the traditional haggadah is not for those who want to rush through the ritual and get to the food. He asks a lot of questions -- very appropriate -- that require a deep breath, a lot of thought and serious discussion.
We have used the same haggadah for 25 years (the Rabbinical Assembly's "Feast of Freedom") with great satisfaction, but have always supplemented it with comments and questions from others. Kagan's contributions will certainly enhance our sedarim this year and on many future occasions.
PS -- Even if you are traditional, do not be afraid of the liberal/renewal perspective of the author. His insights contain enough variety and genuine depth to speak to people in every religious and secular context.
Let Pesach Change Your Life.......2004-06-03
Reb Kagan leads us out of the narrow places of our lives into the expansive One. This is a man whose Judaism is really rooted in the soul. "..And I will bring them back out of Mitzraim...and I will strengthen them in Hashem."(Zech.10:10-12)
A uniquely insightful and moving exploration.......2004-04-05
An essentially traditional presentation of the Haggadah enhanced with original, insightful commentary by Michael L. Kagan (a self-described "ortho-practicing but unorthodox Jew"), The Holistic Haggadah: How Will You Be Different This Passover Night? informatively presents contemporary readers with the Haggadah of the Passover Seder. A uniquely insightful and moving exploration of a Judaic religious tradition that explores the depths of meaning and revelation beyond the surface of Biblical parables, The Holistic Haggadah is written and presented with profound reverence and confidently recommended for personal, theological, and academic Judaic Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Wonderful Journal!.......2003-12-09
I have the paperback copy of this book and am ordering my second copy. My original is very worn. I have been using it for the last many years (nearly ten) to collect inspirational quotes in. I write one quote per day and it is nearly completed!
Now I am buying a second copy to transfer the old quotes into, change some around and so forth. I had been putting them in almost randomly, but I want to rewrite them to correlate better with the Goddess days that Diane cites.
A beautiful way to honor the goddess...........2003-05-25
A sturdy, compact, daily (perpetual) calendar full of useful information and beautiful illustrations! Hardcover and beautifully bound. This book was done by the same author (Diane Stein) as The Woman's Spirituality Book. A wonderful reference book!

It's sad that we need a book to remind us of the importance of scheduling time to rest and worship. But because we can work, shop, achieve, and otherwise stay busy every hour of every day of the week, we do. The statement, "I am so busy" has become a frighteningly common lament, according to author Wayne Muller. Our perpetual state of busyness represents a war on our natural rhythms that demand quiet and renewal in order to be emotionally, spiritually, and creatively fertile.
Honoring the Sabbath need not be a commitment to a specific day of the week, explains Muller. In fact, it can be a yearlong retreat or a morning walk--"anything that preserves a visceral experience of life-giving nourishment and rest."
Far more than an interesting concept, this is a good read. Each chapter is provocative and fluid, with topics such as "Fear of Rest," "Dormancy," and "The Way of Enough." At the end of his chapters, Muller offers stories, poems, or practices that speak to the themes of the Sabbath. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
It has become our standard greeting: "I'm so busy." Now, in a book that can heal our harried lives, the author of the spiritual classic
How, Then, Shall We Live? shows us how to create a special time of rest, delight, and renewal--a refuge for our souls.
Our relentless emphasis on success and productivity has become a form of violence, Muller says. We have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between effort and rest, doing and not doing. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance, longing for time with friends and family, longing for a moment to ourselves.
Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. This consecrated time, Muller affirms, is available to all of us, regardless of our spiritual tradition. We need not even schedule an entire day each week. Sabbath time can be a sabbath afternoon, a sabbath hour, a sabbath walk. Sabbath time is time off the wheel, time when we take our hand from the plow and allow the essential goodness of creation to nourish our souls.
With wonderful stories, poems, and suggestions for practice, Muller teaches us how we can use this time of sacred rest to refresh our bodies and minds, restore our creativity, and regain our birthright of inner happiness. In
Sabbath, he has given us a revolutionary tool for cultivating those necessary human qualities that grow only with time: wisdom, courage, honesty, generosity, healing, and love.
Customer Reviews:
A Book That Everyone Should Read.......2007-03-06
I have read Wayne Muller's "Sabbath" multiple times, each time coinciding with a personal crisis connected to the need for rest. Its rich wisdom and creativity have given me that and more. I believe our society could also benefit from it.
Interestingly, these types of work do not necessarily reveal anything new in our quest for understanding, wisdom and refuge. They are more in the akin to reminders--reminders our culture seriously needs. In fact, it seems as if we once grasped all of this, only to let go of it. Dr. Muller's book, after all, beckons us to "remember..."
With all reviews, I like to present a largely positive outlook, but no project is perfect, so I would also like to draw attention to its few, but noticeable demerits.
One of these is the old, recycled Sixties Generation attitudes on Corporate America, poverty, and Christianity. Dr. Muller, his wonderful scholarship notwithstanding, serves up some of the same tired gripes common to this group. Yes, it is true that the industrious woman in Somalia does not get her due, but does this mean we are to hate government and big business for it? One can still work for a large corporation, put in a hard day's work (which many of us have), feel proud, get rewarded, and go home to rest.
Additionally, there are some snubs directed at Christians. In one chapter, Muller speaks disparagingly of the Christian missionaries who came to America to convert the (what else could they be?) poor, disadvantaged Indians. Why the sarcasm? Has Dr. Muller not heard of the Great Commission handed down by Jesus: to go out into the world and preach the gospel? Someone with Dr. Muller's pedigree ought to know better than that.
Dr. Muller also makes the mistake of assuming, as many unfortunately do, that Jesus' sole (or primary) purpose was to help the poor. I could scarcely believe this glaring oversight. Jesus came to reconcile man to God; as an extension of this, he assisted the poor, among other things.
Yet all in all, Dr. Muller does a wonderful job of standing in the midst of today's hectic society and saying, "Wait, wait..." He is the Paul Revere of the Age of Burnout.
I hope this book can somehow be made available to as many people as possible.
The Sabbath Was Made For Man.......2004-07-07
This book is a good introduction to rest for anyone interested in it, yet it leaves the decision up to the reader as to which day one is to keep as a rest day.
Is the Sabbath rest command subject to arbitrary decision making leaving it up to the individual to decide which day is to be kept?
When Jesus spoke to his disciples he said that the Sabbath was made for man. Now there are some who may argue that the Saturday Sabbath was for the Jewish people only because he was talking with Jews at the time, yet, Jesus, you know, the God or Yahweh of the Old Testament gave the Sabbath to the Israelites, 12 tribes not just to Judah (with Benjamin and Levi, the Jews today.)
Also, the scripture stated that man was to keep 'THE' Sabbath day holy not 'A' Sabbath day.
However, this book introduces the topic. Yet is the day for our pleasure or for God's? Although man was not created for the Sabbath to be it's slave, the Sabbath or 'THE' seventh day was created for mankind or made at the time of creation for all to keep.
What a Neat Book.......2000-12-24
I read this slowly, picking it up now and then, going through one brief
chapter at a time. I always found a smile on my face and a bit of
wisdom in my soul. This is an eloquent, poetic book that I would
highly recommend.
Muller starts with some history of what the Sabbath
has meant in the Jewish and Christian religions and how it has been
practiced through the centuries. But this is not dogmatic reading at
all. The author uses the word Sabbath as a metaphor for rest in our
lives - whether it's an actual day, morning ritual, or simply a few
moments alone during a busy day. He reminds us that there is a reason
that this Sabbath concept has been such a strong component of life in
our past, and warns us against the modern trend towards constant
activity.
Chapters are filled with personal experiences, stories of
others, poems, and suggestions for incorporating mindful rest into our
lives.
I look forward to rereading this numerous times in the future.
SABBATH, Restoring the Sacred Rythem of Rest.......2000-12-01
A profound experience reading Muller's work. I am in recovery and activily pratisipate in the program Alcoholics Anonymous ergo I am anonymous and will not identify myself. I write and experience a lot of speritual moments in my writing. I was moved very deeply by the depth of the book and how the excercises when practiced brought the peace of a living God into my presence.
Being addicive in nature I am a workaholic as I found my true calling at the age of 45. I love what I do and am so enamored with it I work way beyond the physical limits of my aging body. This book and it's return to basic living paterns has resored my energy and awareness of the closeness of my Power Greater Than All. Now twenty odd years in a program that saved my life I have more, love more, give of myself more as a result. This book now has taken me back to the basics of caring for myself first.
I am renewed, refreshed and with the help of the reading herein, I am in a new place with more vigor to give of myself. I am greatful for the opportunity to share this.
Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest.......2000-03-17
This book has helped change my life and my focus from workaholicism back to joy of living and family, from exhaustion and fatigue to faith in restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest. As other reviewers have mentioned, Wayne Muller's writing also stirred my soul and restarted the sacred rhythm set within. I have read many parts of this books aloud to my family, and have given copies to family and friends. All have received it with enthusiam. Some parts brought tears to my eyes as Muller's words flow gently on target in each chapter, and I felt the grief and relief that comes from knowing the truth (and it does set you free). This book is well written, easy to read, and should appeal to people of many faiths. It is a simple, but yet profound book. Made so, because the author is a skilled writer in reaching across the diverse realm of the manmade world to point out the conflicts modern men and women have created at many levels; conflicts which block out or otherwise have many of us unaware of the true value of Sabbath and the sacred rhythms established by the Creator at all levels in all living things. This book will engage you with well chosen quotes, poems, and well written thoughts on the Sabbath. This is a must read!

Experience the World.......2005-01-31
Why does one travel? For many, the answer to this seemingly simple question can be quite one dimensional. Until I read "Chicken Soup for the Travelers Soul" my answer might have been to see new places, to try new cuisine, to get away from work or to escape my everyday existence. After many years and many miles around the globe, it took this book to truly help me understand what drives the human race to really go to the ends of the earth and why, despite the troubles of travel, we keep doing it.
This is an excellent read for both the novice and experience travelers. As a novice, it can help a person gain a greater understanding as to why it is important to see new places, experience different cultures and gain greater understanding of the world we live in. As a seasoned professional in the world of travel, this book can open your eyes and help you see the world through a whole new set of eyes.
For the nervous traveler.......2002-12-27
After reading this book, you may actually enjoy travel. If you are one of those people that don't really appreciate traveling, this book give you some insight into the world of travel that you yourself may have overlooked.
Chicken Soup for the Travellers Soul is a winner.......2002-03-16
This is a wonderful addition to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. One of my favorite stories is A Visit With My Parents. It is about a Peace Corps Volunteer living in the Philippines. The parents of the young woman seemed to have a greater appreciation of life. They also gained a broader perspective as well simply after experiencing how hard a Flipino family worked doing daily manual labor. They also experienced how this family lived with no electricity, plumbing, or beds which was an eye opener for them.
I was also touched by the story Road to Reconcilliation. This is a touching story about a man who lost his leg in the Vietnam War. This man had such bitterness toward his loss until he met a Vietnamese man in a sporting event for veterans. Tran Van Son lost not only his leg but also and his entire family. These two men become fast friends and eventually run the New York Marathon together.
I was touched by the story The Nicholas Effect. This is the story about a young boy who dies in a car accident. The majority of his organs were donated giving life to numerous people. I loved the story Earning My Wings. It is about a compassionate flight attendant who assists a young woman with a baby with clothes and food during a flight. Another story that sticks out in my mind is A Fair Price. This is a wonderful story about how an American college student working in Kenya building classrooms encourages an African man to tell his wife that he loves her for the first time.
Every story in this book is so touching and inspiring. I learned a lot about different places by reading. Chicken Soup for the Traveller's Soul is a winner.

Also the Carpenter's Cloth.......2005-03-08
This is a beautiful work to behold! Coupled with brilliant paintings from various master artists, the author brings scenes alive as if I stand in the wings of a stage watching the greatest story enacted. The poignant words to songs written by Cindy Morgan enhance the inspiration of this devotional book. I bought this book under the title "The Carpenter's Cloth."
Fresh and Powerful Look at the Easter Story.......2004-04-11
With this book, Sigmund Brouwer takes his novelist's gift and applies it to the events of Jesus' final week on earth. The result is sure to move any Christian.
The book is made up of short vignettes. They start with the triumphal entry and proceed through Resurrection Sunday, with events from every day but Saturday. Whether teaching at the temple or at a rigged trial, these brief passages give some insight into Jewish customs or character's thoughts. Obviously, some of this is extra-Biblical, so it fits the Bible story.
If parts of this book seem familiar, it was released several years ago as THE CARPENTER'S CLOTH. Furthermore, parts were also incorporated into his novel THE WEEPING CHAMBER. If you like this book, I definitely recommend you pick up that novel. It is just as powerful and moving while giving a bigger picture then this does.
Sometimes with only a few paragraphs, Mr. Brouwer is able to give fresh insight into the familiar Bible story. I've used this book as a devotional guide during Passion Week. It touched my heart and made me appreciate anew what Jesus did for me.

An unforgettable touch to a timeless story.......2004-04-12
Sunrise Hill is a picture book that commemorates the Christian holiday of Easter. When a town works to build a church in time for Easter Sunday, yet loses all their hard work to a sudden disaster, it takes the wisdom of a young boy to understand that the "real" Easter church is not a building, but rather the faith of the people themselves. The beautiful and warmly colored artwork of Rick Johnson provides Kathleen Long Bostrom's wonderful text with the feel of slightly blurred photographs which add an unforgettable touch to a timeless story.

Basically a devotional - not a "how to" guide.......2007-08-15
I purchased this book hoping to learn how to go on a 40 day fast. However, this book is only a devotional with each day (beginning with day 1) being a devotion. If ever I do go on a 40 day fast, I am sure this will be a very beneficial book.
A Breakthrough Solution for Super Natural Ministry.......2007-03-09
In "40 Days of Prayer & Fasting," Mahesh Chavda challenges the reader to begin a lifestyle of prayer and fasting. Chavda shares life experiences from his own spiritual journey. This is a book of renewal that urges the reader to unlock the power of the Holy Spirit within to experience the greater works of Jesus, in deliverance, provision, and restoration.
I found myself eager to read more as I discovered the importance of fasting, I experienced release from bondage, and began to experience a life of holiness, and purity. His power released within enabled me to face my own spiritual battles triumphantly.
The book is divided into forty individual day's reading. These daily readings include a carefully selected scripture, a stimulating devotion, penetrating questions, and a powerful meditation for contemplation and application.
This is a book for anyone indwelled by the Holy Spirit who wants to find a freer flow of the Spirit and an outpouring of His anointing for a super natural ministry.

A Year by the Sea: Thoughts of an Unfinished Woman

At age 31, having left a stifling decade-long marriage, Debi Holmes Binney set off alone into the harsh Utah desert to find direction and spiritual renewal. Her moving account will appeal to both physical and spiritual adventurers.

Woman survives in spite of herself.......2006-06-07
Since it's been covered already, I won't get into the incredible lack of preparation and education of "her" environment Debi showed. I can only think she was being self-destructive. How else to explain such outright disregard for the wilderness and, dare I say, stupidity?
I couldn't put this book down, but only because I kept looking for some redemptive qualities. I have no idea what she learned about herself, she seemed to grow very little from her experience and her writing was less than inspiring. I kept waiting for her "Midnight Stalker" to take her out and deliver us all out of her and our misery.
One thing I appreciated was when she finally acknowledged the help she'd received and realized that "no man is an island." However, she continued to talk about how she had proved she could take care of herself. Ah...really? Without the wood stove and wood, not to mention the correctly-sized staples and staple gun and, oh yeah, the warm jacket, Debi would not have made it.
I can't remember being so frustrated by a book I've read. I guess that's something...
Speaking from the heart - listening from the heart.......2006-04-16
I am preparing to spend some time alone in the desert. As I looked through the stacks at my local library Desert Solitaire was checked out - but Desert Sojourn was there on the shelf and I checked it out.
Perhaps it is because I too am yearning for deeper meaning in my life and therefore am listening from the heart - but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
It takes great courage to sit with yourself without the escape routes of books, tv, radio, telephones, and all those other distractions.
I was puzzled by some of the reviews - I think they say more about the reviewers than the author.
This is a woman - who was in psychic pain - and she listened to the summons of her soul - and it led her to the desert and deeper into her life.
Because of my interest in Soulcraft (Bill Plotkin) and the work of the animas valley institute (animas.org) this book was a welcome addition to my preparation... and even more so - because I wasn't looking for it - it found me.
Thank you Debi... The world needs wanderers...
Five stars probably from her friends, but then.............2006-03-18
I wouldn't even give this book one star but there is no lower rating. The publisher is at fault for this disaster of a book (they never should have accepted it in the first place) that I hope will someday embarrass the author--the reason I hope that is that eventual embarrassment will show that the author has grown out of whatever strange mental land she was living in when she undertook this sojourn. Others have commented on her lack of proper clothing and equipment so I won't repeat that. What hasn't been mentioned are the food stores she chose to take seemed designed to be not only dreary and monotonous, but extremely constipating. It's as if she deliberately built in self-punishment and failure. I can't remember if she said she did any research before undertaking this fiasco, but it certainly doesn't appear that she did.
Debi, where are you now? In a far better state, I hope. Maybe you had to write this book to get there. Don't be disheartened by all the bad reviews. Sometimes we have to crash through the bottom to come out on the other side. And at the very least, you had the guts to do it, and that counts.
Great book, but frustrating as well.......2002-09-25
I greatly enjoyed this book...as a thirty-something myself who has gone through a divorce, I could relate to a lot of the emotions and the urge to find oneself. Debi's sojourn into the desert, or at least the concept, is one that I often daydream about as a way of searching out my soul and realizing my purpose. I think she has a lot of courage to face herself alone in isolation as I'm not sure I could sleep so many nights in the wilderness alone without dying of fright. The book was well-written, if not a little whiney, at times.
However, at the same time, I found numerous things disturbing. First, the author divorces her husband and leaves her child with him, except for holidays. Then she runs off with some literature guru who lets her live with him jobless and complaining for however long. Second, she goes into the wilderness ill-prepared for 40 days alone - no waterproof hiking boots, no warm jacket, etc. For anyone who has ever camped or skied in extreme conditions, they know that those two items are first and foremost on the survival list. What was she thinking when she brought Reeboks and cowboy boots? Third, she would've surely died had not the ranger and his wife provided her with a parka, wood stove and wood, and staple gun. Fourth, she spent half of her time hiding out in her shelter before realizing that she could occupy her time with creating a camp site area that would make her feel at home. It occurred to me while reading that this is the first thing I would've done - explored my area, created a home, and thus felt safe and comfortable.
Regardless of the frustration, this is a definitely a recommended book.
Disappointing |Sojourn.......2002-01-09
I opened the book with high expectations...What a terrific title...and what a shame to find such immature writing. I kept waiting for the moment when I could share the author's experience...when I could admire her...or sympathize with her..but honestly...a pet fly! A captivating topic...wasted!
