    Book Description

A host of recent studies has revealed news about chocolate that at first seems too good to be true. Chocolate protects you from heart disease. Chocolate improves cholesterol levels. Chocolate may even help prevent some cancers. Can this be? Can America's most demonized dessert actually be good for you?

In a word, yes. Evidence is piling up that chocolate has a list of health benefits few foods can match. We're all familiar with antioxidants, the compounds found in fruits, vegetables, red wine, and tea that prevent heart disease, cancer, and premature aging. What we don't hear is that chocolate has the highest concentration of antioxidants of any food on the planet—ten times that of spinach, five times that of blueberries, and four times that of green tea. Chocolate Unwrapped explains the science behind chocolate's health benefits, then goes on to dispel the myths swirling around chocolate. Chocolate does not cause acne, allergies, migraines, or hyperactivity. Chocolate has much less caffeine than most people think. And tannins in chocolate actually help prevent cavities, making chocolate better for teeth than other sweets.

Though there is no proof for chocolate's reputation as an aphrodisiac (both Casanova and the Aztec emperor Montezuma drank it for that purpose), chocolate has clear effects on the brain and mood. Chocolate contains anandamide, a substance that activates the same receptors in the brain as marijuana, as well as other chemicals that causes feelings of excitement and well-being, explaining the natural craving many people feel for it.

Chocolate Unwrapped not only explains the positive physical and psychological effects of chocolate, but goes on to explore the colorful history, botany, and chemistry of chocolate, so you'll understand what to look for and what to avoid. A recipe section provides a multitude of healthy ways to eat chocolate, from flourless chocolate cake to Mexican mole, and a comprehensive list of resources tells you where to find the best-quality chocolates in the world. All this and more makes Chocolate Unwrapped a book that will change the lives of chocoholics everywhere.

Congratulations to the author on an excellently researched, very readable book about Chocolate. The title alone is clever and the subtitle reassuring.
Not only is it wonderfully organized on the Contents page, it is a very enjoyable read. While I could not be described as a "chocoholic" I know many and I totally enjoy ingesting good chocolate from the bar variety to the many delicious ways of including it in our diet.
The recipes included in the text are different from the usual variety and add to the pleasure of the text. It will make an excellent gift as well as owning one personally.

    Book Description

An iconoclastic portrait of a country and its society which has probably basked too long in a placid, cosy, post-war image as a land of cleanliness, godliness and good order. Through the device of oral history, this book investigates Swiss politicians, generals, industrialists and other characters.

    5 out of 5 stars great admiration.......1999-12-07

I greatly admire an author who has shown, that a critical listener can convey a far more lucid and revelating view of a country's true nature than most "critical" writers.

    Hamburg, December 1999

3 out of 5 stars Interesting essays, somewhat negative bias.......1998-06-29

I found this book interesting. It deals with Switzerland's problems areas: drugs, Holocaust gold, etc. by presenting several essays on each topic by Swiss writers presenting multiple points of view. Overall, the book tends to have a leftist and negative view of Swiss policy and culture in these areas. All of the essays, even if I disagreed with them, were thoughtful and well-written.

    5 out of 5 stars Unusual insights........1997-11-29

Mitya New, a Reuters correspondent in Switzerland for five years, goes beneath the surface of "neutrality, banks and gnomes, mountains, chocolate and cuckoo clocks" to consider aspects of Swiss life generally unknown to outsiders.
The author interviews such varied figures as "Mr. Swatch" (Nicholas Hayek), and Rakra Tethong a Tibetan refugee leader, who discuss everything from WWII anti-Semitism to modern drug addiction, tuberculosis, and banking practices, with a frankness that belies the Swiss reputation for reticence about social ills. The variety of respondents assures a varied perspective in this welcome exploration of a surprisingly complex country.

Disappointing stories, sappy women & weak plots. I forced myself to finish the first two stories but couldn't continue to waste my time by the last story. The sensual scenes were nothing special, totally predictable and almost annoying. A wall-banger.

4 out of 5 stars Necessary read for all teenage girls.......2007-04-28

As the mother of sons, I was curious about what types of questions girls were asking about sex. What a surprise! This book is enlightening for people of all ages about today's teen sexual culture. Sexual awareness is a parent's best tool for helping their teens stay pure. The book is very well organized and easy to read, even for the preteen. It's a great book for keeping on an accessible shelf for when "those" questions might come up or to give to the preteen and teen girls you love.

    5 out of 5 stars JillJade.......2007-04-28

This book is a great read! It's filled with useful information and is provided in a format that is easy to comprehend. I was specifically interested in the section on pregnancy, it gives the adoption option that is not always spoken about now days. Adoption can touch so many lives and is often the best option. I wish this book was around when I was a teen!!

5 out of 5 stars Should be included in sex ed classes at school.......2007-04-27

I thought this book helped counter the myths and innuendo about sex that the kids of today seem to have. It is hard get the real facts about sex when the media distorts it so very much. Regardless of one's beliefs, I think that we can all agree that kids should have a proper launch into the sexual arena when the time comes. Hopefully, with books like this, it will be as adults in a loving friendship framed by marriage. The format was very teen-friendly and readable. When is the adult Unwrapped coming out? LOL

4 out of 5 stars boys will learn too.......2007-04-18

I had been reading the book for about a week when I suddenly realized that others in the home were reading it too. Husband and two teenage sons had picked it up and read some excerpts. It sparked a beneficial discussion about what they knew already and what they learned from the book. I think this is the best use of Unwrapped. It can help parents to bridge the gap between what your teens already know and what they NEED to know. The book is laid out so that teens can scan the topics and find a quick answer. No need to try and digest it all in one sitting. Most of the facts and information presented could be found elsewhere but with Unwrapped, it's all in one small, easy-to-read book.
I must admit, it was unsettling that the Islamic Qur'an was given authority alongside the teachings of the Christian Bible and the Jewish Torah in some instances and that Oprah got the last word but, overall, a good resource.

5 out of 5 stars much good information and many important facts.......2007-04-09

It takes a religious point of view; and is an easy read containing much good information and many important facts aimed for today's teens. This book brings up many topics for discussion. After reading it, my wife and I have given copies to both our teens (daughter and son).

She's got issues with the Christmas issue

B.J. Carlyle -- editor of Alpha, the ultimate men's magazine -- grew up amid hot tubs and hot women at the infamous mansion of her father, L.T. Carlyle, the magazine's publisher. Now she's out to prove to L.T. that she's got what it takes to become editor-in-chief -- even if it means swallowing her pride and getting Buck Bravo for December's cover story.

Landing the bestselling author, adventurer and man-of-the-hour is a coup; the competition would kill to get the exclusive. But she and Buck were in love once, and it ended badly. They haven't seen each other since -- except for a recent one-night stand. Now Buck's insisting B.J. spend the next two weeks with him in the Sierra Mountains and write the story herself. B.J. agrees, but she's not going to tell Buck she suspects she's pregnant with his baby.

B.J.'s out to get the story.

She doesn't need Buck thinking she's out to get her man.

5 out of 5 stars Unwrap another fun episode in the Bravo family saga!.......2007-02-23

    B. J. Carlyle works as a features editor of Alpha magazine. With her father as the publisher as well as editor-in-chief, B. J. works very hard to prove herself to prepare for when L.T. finally hands the editor-in-chief position over to her. Only now, she's single, pregnant, and the December cover story has fallen apart.

Buck Bravo is a man on a mission. Getting B. J. back in his life is one of his top priorities. He'd messed up their relationship six years earlier and now wants her back. With Alpha's cover story falling through, Buck sees his opportunity and latches on, he'll agree to be the cover story, but only if B. J. has to spend two weeks with him and write the story herself.

Already suffering from morning sickness, B. J. drags herself out of bed and to the office only to be besieged with bad news. Her latest ex-boyfriend, Wyatt, wrote a story that's been published in a competing magazine titled "Manhattan Man-Eater. That he is referring to her in the article is blatantly obvious. Alpha's planned cover story has been called off, and nobody can come up with a good story for the December issue. Her father, L. T. has a cover story idea, but he chooses to keep it to himself until that evening and invites B. J. to supper, promising to reveal his big cover story idea. B. J. arrives for supper expecting her father and his latest Alpha girl, she wasn't prepared for the shock of Buck's presence or having L. T.'s big surprise story is her ex, Buck. Buck is a very popular man. He's a best-selling author, and one of the many illegitimate children of his notorious father, Blake Bravo. Having Buck for a cover story is practically guaranteed to sell papers. That doesn't mean B. J. wants to spend any more time in his presence that absolutely necessary. B. J. needs this story though, so she agrees to write the story and finds herself heading to New Bethlehem Flat, California with Buck and a photographer. Buck doesn't know about the baby yet, and B. J. has every intention of telling him about his impending fatherhood - just not right now. B. J. just needs to figure out how to keep him from noticing her morning nausea and finding out about the baby before she's ready to tell him.

Christine Rimmer's BRAVO series contains characters that are always strong willed and determined with personalities that shine through the pages, and BRAVO UNWRAPPED is no exception. This story is full of quirky characters, interesting settings - both New York and California, Bravo family history, lots of fighting, and even more loving. B. J. and Buck have a past history that left them both hurting. B. J.'s convinced that she's just no good at romantic relationships. Buck is out to prove that she's everything he could want in a woman.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining contemporary romance .......2005-12-15

Alpha magazine features editor B.J. Carlyle is stunned when she finds out they no longer have the Christmas cover story as the popular Wise Brothers broke up. Meanwhile their competitor TopMale prints an unflattering article about her being a Manhattan man-eater. Her father, who owns Alpha, tells her he has the answer to her problems of lacking the feature article, a bio on writer Buck Bravo the man she fears to love and by the way is carrying his baby though no one knows this.

Though capable of authoring a bio, Buck insists that B.J. write the article by spending two weeks on his family property, the Sierra Star B&B. His agenda is simple; he made an error six years ago when he failed to follow up once a frightened B.J. rejected his proposal. When she caught with someone else soon afterward he knew he destroyed his life. When he finally coaxed her back in his bed two months ago, Buck regained hope, but now he has to persuade his beloved he will remain faithful, loyal, and loving forever.

BRAVO UNWRAPPED is an entertaining contemporary romance starring a likable hero and a woman who fears commitment. Buck believes that he needs to take charge of the situation if he is to persuade his beloved they belong together that is before he knows she is pregnant. Thus he forces her onto his home field where she can see how much he loves his mother and siblings. Still he realizes the key remains bucking her belief that he will cheat on her and that she owes her father by proving her worth to him. Though the obstinacy of B.J. can become wearying, readers and her father will root for Buck to succeed

5 out of 5 stars Does B.J. really want Buck?.......2005-12-13

After all these years she has to meet Buck Bravo again and end up in his bed IT must have been all those Manhattans. To top it all off she's pregnant now and so sick!

B.J. Carlyle is the features editor on her father's Mens magazine *Alpha*. The planned feature has fallen through -- the musical group has brokeup! L.T. Carlyle demands she come to dinner after learning of this. B.J. is still sick even though it's evening. L.T. has the perfect new feature for her -- Buck Bravo the best-selling author.

Buck insists that she come to his home town with thim. L.T. sends them in his jet to Reno, NV then they drive west to New Bethlehem Flat, CA it's only an hour's drive but what a different world!

Buck's mother, Chastity, is the owner of the town's Bed & Breakfast -- Sierra Star. Buck wants to show B.J. where he came from and what made him be what he is. It's a small town Buck's friends and family open their arms to B.J. and slowly she's seduced by Buck but she can't tell him about the baby.

They get called back to NYC and B.J. must make some decisions before she can go to Buck with an open heart.

5 out of 5 stars Hot romantic suspense .......2004-11-17

Karina Sutter and Debby Caruso own Sutter Chocolat, known for their repeat business as women believe the products contain an aphrodisiac. Karina is attracted to the new hunk across the street, but he seems oblivious to her. She decides to make a play by giving him a welcome package of aphrodisiac truffles. However, Alex Anderson rejects her informing her he is allergic to chocolate.

Alex admits to himself he wants Karina, but will do nothing about his feelings as he is on the run. Having been placed in Witness Protection when he did his job as Mark Lexmond, defense attorney for a killer who murdered the son of a crime kingpin, Alex is in hiding from the thugs and the cops as he knows someone inside the WPP gave him away in Florida. Still he finds himself struggling not to make love with the delicious looking chocolate maker; only fears for her life keeps him from tasting the sweetness she offers.

This is hot romantic suspense though the intrigue comes late. Much of the story line is the sweet Karina trying to get Alex to devour her senseless; an act he desperately wants to do, but bittersweet tries to avoid. Readers will appreciate this XXX amusing chase in which the heroine dangles her chocolate coated cherry at a hero who salivates for a dip in the honey pot, but tries to avoid his and her desires.

It's a very entertaining and amusing read. The essays make some very valid points and there are recipes you probably won't find anywhere else. Interesting pictures of Britney Spears and Hillary Duff before they made it big. The authors plan for lawyers is especially fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Three stories make this well worth it!.......2007-04-05

All proceeds from Heroes Unwrapped are being donated to SOS America, Inc in support of injured veterans. Three stories stand out: "Gift Exchange," "The World She Wants," and "A Hero's Welcome" all make this book worth the price of admission.

    1) "Under the Covers" brings hope to millions of romance fans around the world. Women do not stop being sexy, desirable heroines just because they're over 30! Thirty-nine year old Katie is a PR expert hired to run a recruiting campaign for the U.S. military. Twenty-nine year old Special Operative B.B. has been selected as the new poster boy. 4 stars

    2) "Rules of Engagement" introduces Carole Madison. She went through an ugly divorce while her brother was in Iraq. He's bringing his Marine buddy Michael home for Christmas. Michael has a lot of heartache to overcome, too. Okay, a more obvious set-up would be hard to find. Of course Carole and Michael will hit it off (they both love chili and eighties rock bands so why wouldn't they?). Unfortunately, I never felt any chemistry between them. I can suspend my disbelief, but this romance felt too contrived. 3 stars

    3) Sexy photo journalist, Tori, finds herself trapped in an elevator with the "Baghdad Bad Boy." Lee Jackson has a reputation as a ladies man, but he isn't as shallow as he seems. The setting and plot of this story are very well developed. BUT, just when the couple heats up, Lee up and leaves! The story felt like a one night-stand. 3.5 stars

    4) "Gift Exchange" is one of the best (and the shortest) stories in the anthology, and the only one to feature an M/M pairing. Davy and Will are lieutenants in the British Navy in 1799. But, love between men isn't just forbidden, it's a hanging offense. Will and Davy must keep their relationship secret on ship. For their first Chirstmas, Davy gives Will a gift, but Will was unable to get him anything in return. Should he risk forbidden passion to show Davy how much he loves him? These characters were introduced in the novel, Ransom, but this story stands alone. 5 stars

    5) "The World She Wants" takes us to the year 2272 where genetically engineered super-soldiers have been created to save mankind. Destiny's Soldiers live hard, and die young. Newton Stefanovich is tough, beautiful and deadly. She's just been assigned to investigate the murder of an "untreated" human aboard another ship. But there is much more going on than one death. The answer lies with the brilliant, but human, Brian Cord. This story has a highly developed mythology, and a very strong plot. This would make a great novel. 5 stars.

    6) In "A Hero's Welcome," Phillip has returned home after being wounded in combat. His tour of duty is up, but his nerves are shot & he's struggling with mood swings. He returns to find the lovely Suzi house-sitting. A slow burn is the best way to describe this story. These two don't have sex; they make love. This story is something to savor, like fine wine. 5 stars.

    7) "Come A' Courtin'" ends the anthology on a light note. Peter's tour of duty is over and he's going to home to marry his sweetheart. Half of the small town is at the train station to welcome their hero home and give him the key to the city. But, Katie's not there. Gasp! She's engaged to someone else! There's no substance to this story, but it's still a fun read. 3 stars.

UNDER THE COVERS by Cat Johnson
BB had left thae modeling world behind when he joined the Navy and became a Seal and later recruited into the Special Task Forces. Now Central Command has decided to start recruiting civilians and he's thrust into the limelight again, this time as a poster boy for the special ops. This is an assignment that he's definitely not comfortable pursuing. The only bright spot in this ordeal is he'll be getting to spend lots of time with his `handler' Katherine. BB fully intends to make it quality time.

BB Dalton from RED HOT & BLUE is back with his own story that you won't want to miss. He may be forced into being a poster boy, but his battle is on another front in this story. This time it's with his `handler' who thinks that she's too old for him. He's out to teach her that age is just a number.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT by Barri Bryan
Having enduring a nasty divorce, Carol is looking forward to sharing Christmas with her family, including her brother who has been in Iraq for the past year. Only her brother is bringing a friend with him, an Army buddy that no one else in the family has even met. Michael O'Shea has never had a real `home' outside of the military so when he becomes interested in Carol he clues her in on the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT for their relationship.

I think we all dream of the kind of Christmas holiday we once shared with our families. Neither Michael nor Carol will get the holiday they were expecting, but they'll both experience a Christmas they'll never forget.

BAGHDAD BAD BOY by Marie Carroll
Tori has been in Baghdad for six months and has heard all the come-ons that the military men could come up with - or so she thought. Lee Jackson is in a class all by himself. He claims to be on TDY (temporary duty) but the only duty she sees him doing seems to be trying to seduce her into his bed.

I was fascinated by Lee and love the way he makes a game out of trying to seduce Tori. While I chuckled at each botched opportunity I couldn't help wondering what exactly is Lee's military assignment?

    GIFT EXCHANGE by Lee Rowan
Shipmates and lovers William and David are only able to spend time together as lovers on the rare occasions when they get shore leave. If they're found out the laws of the Royal Navy decrees death by hanging to men who take other men as lovers so their love must remain hidden. David can't resist giving William a small token of his affection, articles to help keep his lover warm, and all he wishes for in return is a kiss.

This is a poignantly sweet historical love story that will have readers smiling even as you feel bad for these two men who cannot openly express their love.

THE WORLD SHE WANTS by Denny Bryce
Newton is one of Destiny's Soldiers, a bio-engineered fighter for the Bear Colony's Galactic Army. She regularly has sex with bio-engineered males but never engages in intercourse with mortals. Learning that Brian, her mortal friend and teammate is being transferred and they'll only have one last assignment together dampens her spirits. Brian has been in love with Newton for a very long time. How is he going to convince her to give him a chance to love her?

This is a very cool futuristic tale. Newton and Brian make a wonderful couple but she's never allowed herself to see him as anything more than strictly a friend - until he makes his interest obvious.

A HERO'S WELCOME by Melanie Anderson
Suzi Preston has been house-sitting in Maine for the past year. She thought that the house belonged to her mother's friend. It's only when Phillip let himself in that she learns that it's his house. His mother had been taking care of it before her move to Florida. They agreed to share the house at least for the night. Once Suzi had gone to her room for the night she realized that he is a soldier and can't help but wonder about the hint of sadness she can see in his expression.

It's our fondest wish that every soldier has someone to return to after serving his/her country. Suzi didn't know Phillip before his time in the Marine's but more than anything she wants to know him much better now.

COME A'COURTIN' by Phillippa Grey Gerou
Peter is returning home from the war and he's got his heart set on marrying his best friend's sister Katie. The only problem is that he never mentioned it to Katie. His return home is everything that he could have ever hoped for except his Katie is engaged to someone else. Will Peter be able to convince Katie that he is the right man for her?

This is a sweet tale full of hope for a future. Peter and Katie are both young and have made mistakes but nothing that a little determination and a lot of lovin' won't cure.
