Book Description

Wallpaper is back, but this time it is different. No longer used to cover cracks and imperfections in crumbling plasterwork, wall coverings are now a means of expressing individuality. Graphic designers and illustrators are playing with scale and using walls as their canvases, while fashion and textile designers are transferring their fabric prints to paper. This book is a showcase of fresh and innovative wallpaper designs from fifty artists, including graphic and fashion designers, illustrators, and established wallpaper designers. Using color photographs and original design material accompanied by exclusive interviews, this book illustrates the wide spectrum of approaches to wallpaper with designs produced for the home and commercial spaces.

Book Description

Hypnotic flowering vines, black-and-white Op Art odysseys, and seas of patriotic warships are just some of the beautiful, strange, and fantastic patterns that have adorned the walls of homes the world over. In the tradition of best-seller Fabulous Fabrics of the 50s, this home decor reference book entertains while it inspires with flawless reproductions of 150 classic and unique wallpapers; many of which are drawn from the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution. Covering every decade of the century, Off the Wall celebrates robust pattern and detail in all their manifestations. Lively text and captions help to capture the designers, trends, and world events relevant to each piece, and the broader evolution of the genre, from a 1948 mural of rural America, replete with plump livestock and ripening fields, to the boldly colored abstractions produced in the 1950s by Herman Miller for MOMA. A useful resource for collectors, designers, decorators, and artists, Off the Wall is a colorful and captivating tribute to a widely appreciated medium.

5 out of 5 stars wall papers design.......2007-05-09

this book is very useful for all kinds of designers. wall papers are very modern today as well as they were in the past.
today we use wall papers every where in every possibale space even in fashion stores, coffe shops and not only at houses.
this book gives us a review on the 20th century and which we can find very modern again today.

1 out of 5 stars Not so wonderful.......2006-03-10

I dont think this book of wall paper pictures collection reflects the beauty, width and depth of the wallpaper design in 20th century. I have seen (and used) much better, detailed, artistic and representative examples myself.
All of the examples are from the 1920-60 period. Nothing after 1960. The book doesnt include any of the glamorous examples either. Another negative thing is all of the examples look like they are printed patterns, they give no idea about the texture, embossing and the paper type used.
If you are into the history of wallpapers this book may give you information but not much inspiring for graphic designers.
I wouldnt have bought it if i had the chance to see more pages because what you see at the Amazon.com "seach inside" feature is all this book about, same style, same not so good examples all through the book.

A good choice for those who want to add a little flair, depth, and sophistication to their interior painting and decorating efforts, Black & Decker: The Complete Guide to Painting and Decorating will encourage you to do more than just slap on some paint. After flipping through the pages and seeing more than 700 color photos, you will want to play with paint, experiment with it, and control it. The first section of the book--Color & Decorating Principles--explains color theory as well as the use of colors and patterns to create moods in a room. (Warm colors, for example, help make north-facing rooms more inviting, and the people in them warmer.) The second section of the book--Basic Painting & Wallcovering --explains the process of preparing surfaces for finish paint, choosing the right materials, and estimating quantities. (This portion also notes how small patterns help make close spaces seem larger and more open, while large patterns are stimulating and look best in active areas such as a child's room or a large kitchen.) The book's final section--Advanced Painting & Decorating--looks at how to embellish walls and floors with faux designs and decorative accents, and how to add elegant touches with wallcovering cutouts, cornices, and wall frame moldings. Specialty painting tools are also discussed, including paint gloves for contoured surfaces such as pipe and wrought-iron, bendable paint pads for window shutters and cast-iron radiators, and mixer bits. Knowing that some of the designs and color combinations may spur people to wilder-than-normal decisions, the authors wisely advise that people first get samples of their preferred wallcoverings or paints, and then take them home and subject them to the 24-hour test, checking from time to time over the course of a full day to see how the colors change under varying lighting situations. --John Russell

    Book Description

The only international history of wallpaper from its origins to today's digital and laser printing, now brought completely up to date.

Wallpaper is high fashion, and literally so in the wallcovering lines launched by Gucci in 2003 and Benetton in 2004. Innovation has been fueled by technology (with developments such as multicolored dry rub-off transfers); by environmental concerns (with nonwovens, or vlies, that breathe and create no harmful residues); and by a profusion of retro, luxury, naturalistic, humorous, and artistic ideas.

First published in 1994, The Papered Wall has been revised to include a new and fully illustrated chapter on recent trends and a thorough reworking of its invaluable reference section, including suppliers of historic patterns and collections open to the public.

Written by experts from Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, this authoritative volume begins with the individually printed sheets that formed the first wallpapers in the fifteenth century. It encompasses English flocked papers with repeats as large as seven feet, spectacular French panoramas encircling an entire room, and exquisitely printed bowers of roses. By 1900 technical inventiveness and designers like William Morris had put new kinds of wallcoverings and a vast choice of patterns before a worldwide market. The twentieth century saw a struggle between traditional ideas and radically "modern" styles—Jugendstil, Art Deco, Bauhaus, and postwar contemporary designs.

Complete with a guide to care and conservation, this is a timely, informative, and stimulating record of wallpapers for every use and taste. 369 illustrations, 216 in color.

4 out of 5 stars the difinative source book.......2000-06-24

This book is great not only for someone who is just getting started in decorating but, also for the professional as a referance. It is broken down into six basic catagories; Style guide, Fabrics. Wallpapers, Paints and Finishes, Tiles, and Flooring. Judith Miller does an excellent job of giving a wealth of information about not only different periods but also what textiles lend themselves to these periods. I was not to impressed with the paints and finishes section however. I really liked the organization by image (ie fabrics with flowers) and style period rather than fabric type or colors. The variety is amazing. The best part of the book is that she gives you the info to find all of the textiles! Including the maker, if other colors are available, and estimated price. This is great, other style books generally do not give you half of the wealth of information that is book does. I couldn't wait to get started.

Oxford-trained artist and interior decorator Jane Gordon Clark believes wallpaper has been undervalued. Gradually, painting and stencil designs have replaced paper as popular tools for bringing a room alive; people often imagine papering as a terrible chore--all paste-encrusted brushes and sloppy seams. Clark wants to prove the contrary, and her book brings to light the lush possibilities of this ancient art, which can transform a bland room into a shimmering oasis. In the past, wallpaper designers were true artists, but their names have been forgotten. The photos here are arresting: a dining room surrounded in images of an English countryside, a bedroom thick with Renaissance-style gold brocade. A close-up of a wall in Vanessa Bell's (the sister of Virginia Woolf) Sussex farmhouse reveals handmade paper: a black background covered with gray squares and hand-painted yellow chevrons. It's so glamorous you'll never enter the paint aisle at the hardware store with such certainty again. A "Technique Library" concludes the book, with drawings to guide the novice through the papering process. As Clark writes, wallpaper "is unique in its potential for introducing an infinite choice of design, and brings a high degree of finish, clothing the walls with a richness and warmth." --Emily White

        Book Description

Ever versatile, wallpaper has the ability to give rough plaster walls a fresh, smooth start and take the rawness off the inside of new houses. It can also create immediate paint effects, allow us to experiment with deep layered background color and even create an illusion of space and light.
