Book Description

For 200 years the White House has served as the residence of our nation's president and his family. John and Abigail Adams were the first residents, and each family ever since has been able to make the White House a comfortable home and to acquire the necessities for handsomely carrying out its additional functions as nexus for state ceremenoy and entertaining. In captivating detail, this volume--produced in association with the White House Historical Association--reveals how the decoration of the White House has reflected the personal style of our first families and their countless forays into redecorating.

Illustrated largely with photographs especially commissioned for this book, as well as historic pictures, The White House focuses on some of our nation's most important heirlooms, including furniture, silver, glass, porcelain, and textiles. Enlivened with stories about the first families and how their furnishings often clashed with the politics of the time, this book is an ideal gift for those interested in the decorative arts, biography, and history.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars President's Park.......2006-01-14

The White House is just an amazing facility, it's a museum, the President's Residence, and the embodiment of the Executive Branch. This book is exhaustively researched, and the photographs are well done. Though it is really not a history of the first families, the book really consentrates on furnishings, and the changes made to the structure over the centuries. The White House serves so many duties and thanks to Jackie O, the historic furnishing have returned and subsequent first ladies and curators have continued her pursuit of historic period furnishings. This book does a wonderful job of highlighting the best of the White House Collection. If you like books of this sort then you will enjoy this book dedicated to one of the iconic symbols of democracy.

4 out of 5 stars A misleading title.......2001-06-06

This is a beautiful book with exquisite layout and photographs. However, the title gives the impression that we will find information on the First Families, which certainly is not so. It is a very good coffee table book on interior design, design, furnishings, architecture, etc. but since I expected photos and information on people, I was somewhat dissappointed with its contents. But it is a work of art.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Any Library.......2001-03-31

Betty Monkman, the White House Curator and photographer Bruce White (from the Metropolitan Museum of Art) have collaborated to create an invaluable text on the history of the furnishings of The White House. Wonderful stories lie within...most famously, the story behind the Resolute Desk, the desk used by Presidents Kennedy, Carter, George H. Bush, Bill Clinton, and now President George W. Bush in their respective Oval Offices.

On June 1st at 6PM, Ms. Monkman will deliver a lecture on The White House as part of exhibition presented by the John F. Kennedy Library and The Metropolitan Museum "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years-Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum". The exhibit will begin May 1, 2001 until July 29, 2001. This will be a great opportunity for one to hear Ms. Monkman's expertise in person. Go to the lecture and buy the book!

5 out of 5 stars BRAVO! BRAVO!.......2000-10-05

Once again Betty Monkman has given us WHITE HOUSE FANS a magnificant chronicle! What a glorious, beautiful absolutely stunning work of art! Betty has included everything in this piece! Bruce White's photography cannot be topped! Looking at the old photos of days gone by and then seeing the "latest versions" of those historic rooms is truly a treat! The details on the historic furntiure, art pieces, glassware, china and more within those walls is fascinating! During this - the 200th Anniversary year of the White House getting it's first occupants, this book is really a treasure and a great addition to anyone's library to help mark this historic anniversary! I thought I knew a lot about the White House - once again Betty Monkman has taught me more! Thanks Betty! :-)

The many shades of white, beautifully complemented by the velvety verdure of evergreens and ivy, are a perfect choice for holiday trimmings--the decorations, the accents and accessories, the table settings. Glowing with candlelight and sparkling with sun-kissed snow, these pages are filled with glorious arrays of white and green. Noted designer Tricia Foley has a way with white: dozens of elegant little ornaments, a creamware-bedecked table, a frosty tree encrusted with crystal and silver decorations, an all-white gingerbread house, even a boxwood-swagged gauzy bed canopy. "Like a Currier and Ives print or a snow-capped New England steeple," Foley reminds us, "the image of the perfect white Christmas is firmly etched in our minds." Her visual feast shows how truly stunning holiday decor can be when planned in a symphony of whites. --Amy Handy

Book Description

Everyone knows that the best Christmas is a white Christmas-a traditional celebration with snow capping the eaves, a fire roaring in the fireplace, and a mistletoe ball hanging in the doorway. Tricia Foley, best-selling author of Having Tea, Linens and Lace, and The Natural Home, brings back the magic of the time-honored customs, along with her own white-on-white decorating style, to create the kind of Christmas that will make treasured memories for years to come.

With ideas for every room of the house, Foley shows how to borrow from the colors of nature in winter 'pure white and evergreen' to dress up the house for the holidays. She includes simple yet timeless suggestions for draping greens over the bed canopy, hanging all-white stockings of every size and fabric, lighting with votive candles, candelabra, and sconces, and wrapping with handmade papers and raffia ribbons. For entertaining, White Christmas presents the perfect Christmas tea, with snowy linens and homemade scones. Helpful tip boxes cover Christmas lore, favorite tales, and Christmas crafts, and a resource section provides useful lists of addresses, related books, and holiday songs.

For anyone who wants to make the most of the holidays, Tricia Foley's White Christmas is the ideal holiday decorating and entertaining companion.

Book Description

Firsthand accounts and photographs chronicle the restoration of the White House during the Kennedy Administration.

Designing Camelot recounts one of the most influential interior design projects in American history, the restoration of the White House during the Kennedy administration. Fueled by the intense fascination with the charismatic First Family, the project had a profound effect on the popular American imagination and taste in interior furnishings. Emphasizing the historic restoration of each room and the efforts to have these rooms reflect the personalities and tastes of Jack and Jackie, Designing Camelot features a wealth of first-person quotations, personal and public correspondence, media accounts, and photographs. Included are detailed room-by-room analyses of the restoration, anecdotes about the people involved, and insights into the choices made.

James Abbot (Baltimore, MD) is currently Curator of Decorative Arts at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Elaine Rice (Wilmington, DE) is an independent consultant on American fine and decorative arts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spectactular.......2006-04-08

James Abbot and Elaine Rice are right on the money! This book entails the Kennedy restoration of the White House during 1961 - 1963. Much research has gone in to producing an excellent history that otherwise would be lost. Great photographs of the Kennedy White House as well. I can say this book is a treasure for both Kennedy and White House enthusiasts alike. I have had this book for several years and still find myself picking it up.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Lady, Classic Designer, Classic Book........2004-03-21

James Abbott and Elaine Rice have documented the blueprinting and designing of much more than rooms in the White House. The title says it all. Camelot was about all things Kennedy Administration. Navy suits and Limousines were younger and more progressive. Presentations on the lawn for visiting heads of states by far surpassed the ho-hum receptions at the train station. No detail of Camelot, the White House public rooms and the family quarters escaped scrutiny of Jackie, Sister Parrish and Boudin. Jackie even designed the ash stands with Boudin's help.

I don't understand the criticism of this book as dry or wordy. It's a book. It's a narrative, not a coffee table book. Tomes have been printed and documented of the restored rooms, before and after. The photos are what they were. In this world of colorized movies, Photoshopped magazine covers and remastered music, Abbott and Rice have given us the plain unvarnished way it was, warts and all. I found the background very interesting. It was a collaborative effort between the committee, Jackie, Sister Parrish and Boudin, with a giant does of Henry duPont thrown in. Any one person could have completely changed the way the great house looked, but Jackie rescued the building from it's Gimbell's basement look. It remains generally true to her vision, even though eight First Ladies have imprinted on it. This country would not exist if not for the help of France during the Revolution. It influenced this country greatly and I see nothing wrong with the influence. No one criticized Mamie Eisenhower for the his and hers tvs in the wall or the Mamie Pink.

I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars not enough for the money.......2003-05-17

The writing is dry. The pictures are not the best and it fails to show whnat the White House looked like before the restoration. Everyone says that it looked horrible so why not give the reader a taste of what was so wrong with it? If you can find the White House guidebook that was produced to pay for the restoration read that instead. It has much betters photos.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-06-25

A superb survey of the White House decor of President & Mrs. Kennedy. The book documents the ideas, process, decisions and choices behind the stunning interiors of the Kennedy White House-both the public and private rooms. What comes through the text is Mrs. Kennedy's leadership and vision - combining taste, history, beauty and great cunning - just to create and then manage this melange of egos, talent and intelligence was an accomplishment, and the results live on today (albeit not as beautifully or artistically). We all gained a greater knowledge and appreciation of our nation's historic and artistic past because of Mrs. Kennedy's work.

I've corresponded with Mr. Abbott and he's been most kind and interesting. He assisted in the current show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years," and there's a number of items on display relating to the White House decorations.

Read the book, catch the exhibit (it moves to the JFK Library in Boston in the fall).

2 out of 5 stars Wordy and Disappointing.......2001-05-15

I was very disappointed with this book. I found the writing style dry and the photographs/layout just not up to par. It almost seemed like somebody's thesis with som photos thrown in. Somebody needs to do a large format picture book on this subject with more about Jackie!

Blue and white is the simplest color combination to decorate with, because most shades of blue look good with other shades of blue and because so many world cultures have produced art and home furnishings in those colors. Therefore, its subtleties are often overlooked. Stephanie Hoppen takes us on a blue-and-white tour of the world: the turquoise tiles of Turkey, the soft milky blues of Sweden, the marine blues of the Caribbean, the crisp dark blue of Chinese pottery, all set off by clean white paint, linens, and porcelain. China, glass, fabric, and tile are all featured in chapters on dining, sleeping, and bathing in blue and white, with close to 200 lovely photographs by Fritz von der Schulenberg making it all look at once peaceful and lively. There's an accessibility to the beauty of blue and white; Hoppen shows that mixing and matching shades and styles is practical and fun. As she says, "We may not live in castles, palaces, or idyllic country retreats, but we can all enjoy the beauty of blue and white living."

Book Description

Fresh and crisp with a classic appeal, the combination of blue and white is the world's most popular decorating scheme. From Chinese tiles to French fabrics, from the deep blues and bright whites of Greece to the pastels of Wedgwood china, these colors can be found around the globe, used in the most beautiful ways. With Blue & White Living, you can bring those same styles into your own home, whether you are decorating a grand mansion or a country cottage, reupholstering a sofa, or simply draping a quilt on a bed.

Stephanie Hoppen, owner of a decorative antiques gallery in London, is the ideal guide to blue and white's exciting possibilities. In Blue & White Living, Hoppen highlights the major rooms of the house--bedrooms, dining areas, living rooms, and bathrooms--in addition to devoting chapters to collectibles, fabrics, pictures, and exteriors. With careful attention to each room, she showcases the colors in all their decorative forms, including curtains, carpets, paint, pillows, crystal, porcelain, upholstery, and more. And since the book features hundreds of full-color photographs, it will immediately inspire, educate, and demonstrate why the combination of blue and white is both fresh and versatile.

Blue & White Living is a must for collectors and decorators who are interested in creating unlimited variations on a timeless theme.

Stephanie Hoppen owns The Stephanie Hoppen Gallery in London, where she is an expert dealer in decorative antiques, books, and maps. She works as an independent consultant to both private and corporate clients and is developing the merchandising of her picture archive. The author of Decorating with Pictures (Potter, 1991), she resides in London.

With the practical inspiration of Stephanie Hoppen's decorating expertise and Fritz von der Schulenburg's vivid photographs, the classic look of blue and white finds hundreds of exciting new interpretations.

Very dissappointed with this book. I did not find it at all helpful in planning a blue and white living room. The information was more common sense than proffessional advice and education.

4 out of 5 stars For the most part I liked it........1999-08-06

A reader in Wisconsin

I read the book and for the most part I enjoyed it. The book have giving me many ideas on the the basic theme of blue and white. Two disappointment that I did have is that the color combinations were some what limited. (few blue-greens, violets, greyblues etc.) Also it tended to lack practical ideas for the average home. However for the most part it is helpful.

Beloved perhaps because of their importance in the natural world, the colors blue and white in decoration appear fresh, clean and at once classic and contemporary. This color combination is easy to work with; hues of cobalt, sky, aqua and powder blue (to name just a few) mix effortlessly with whites of many shades. Through informative text and inspirational photographs, Blue & White in Your Home invites you to enjoy the refreshing ambience of this pretty palette.

Beginning with an overview of the effects possible with various blues and whites, the book goes on to explain how to achieve them. It shows a range of blue and white shades and patterns in paints, wallcoverings, fabrics and ceramics; devotes a chapter to blue and white table settings; presents ideas for incorporating blue and white accessories and collectibles in your decor; and shows how the color scheme is at home outdoors.

This is a book full of inspiring ways to use a color combination that has been popular for centuries. While I prefer the rooms that show soft blues mixed with creamy whites, brighter tones are pictured as well. The pictures and text work together in showing the reader how to create livable interiors with the feel of romantic elegance that is common to all of the decorating books published by Victoria magazine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Live what you Love.......2007-08-17

This was a very practical way for me to discover my blind spots when it comes to decorating and arranging my home. Denny has made lots of interesting exercises that are a lot of fun and occasionally surprising. I also liked her playful and inspiring tone throughout the book. I feel very confident and prepared to reinvent rooms that haven't been changed in many years.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual journey and decorating combined.......2005-03-02

Finally, decorating makes sense! While some decorators approach decorating piecemeal, this author takes a much broader view. The author's premise is that you must understand what you want before you start actually decorating. The book then takes you on a journey of discovery.

There are several wonderful exercises in the book, from a completely new perspective. For example, many decorators will tell you to cut out pictures of rooms you like. But what if all the rooms you like don't fit your house, or your budget? Or what if you can't find pictures of rooms you like? Denny's approach is different. She has you create a picture journal, not simply of rooms you like, but of anything you like--rooms, jewelery, scenery, clothing, etc. Then, you look through and find themes which you can then translate to, and make come alive in, your home.

Typically when I read a book with exercies, I find them burdensome or dull. These are different; they are easy and fun. Many exercises are aimed at discovering your hidden desires, likes, and needs. What's the point in designing a beautiful room if it doesn't meet your specific needs? This book helps you dig, and uncover what you want and what may have been missing in your home/life for years.

There's also a wonderful section devoted to clutter.

It's hard to believe that a decorating book can work so well for an individual. But it does. I read the book somewhat quickly then started again and did (most of) the exercies. This book is great for anyone interested in a fresh, individualized, fun approach to decorating.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun and Easy Read.......2004-11-16

Do you ever look around a room in your house and think: I never liked this room; it's too ___________ (fill in the blank!). That's how I was, but I was never sure what to do about it. This book is wonderful for helping you discover the styles and atmosphere you want your room to have and then how to create it.

I love how the author emphasizes that your home should be decorated with what makes YOU happy, not what the latest trend is. She has a very straightforward approach for helping you come up with your design. Her many examples of past clients' "problems" and their solutions makes the book fun to read as well as informative. Her book never gets bogged down in technical jargon.

I highly recommend this book. My husband and I used this process in one of our rooms and we love the result; it's one of our favorite rooms in the house. We are now eagerly working on another one!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty Inside and Out.......2004-11-11

Thank you Denny for writing a book that makes a connection between my home and my joy, my creativity, my spirituality and my love of family and friends. In What Color Is Your Slipcover, Denny Daikeler gently showed me a process of self-discovery that brings beauty to my life inside and out. Denny writes: "I will attempt to lead you to yourself and to the home life your soul deserves."

And it is easy and fun. I did the Picture Journal Exercise and discovered that almost every one of my picture had circles. I still cannot believe the impact of knowing this. Because here I am, walking through my home filled with a wonderful sense of comfort, a feeling of "I am home" as I look at the sloping backs of my dining room chairs, the rounded corners of the dining room tables, the wrought iron swirls at the base of my husband's desk, and the unusual round chair in my living room. The roundness somehow touches my spirit. I am home.

BONUS
And What Color is Your Slipcover is good for relationships too. Tony (my dear husband) and I did the process together. We have never discussed furniture or colors. It really is not an interest to him. But he loves his map desk and our living room filled with music. Last year, he gave me the most beautiful anniversary card. I am going to frame it. He said to me: "I knew you would love the card." I placed in on my mantle. It was the exact color of the walls and furniture, with swirls of course.

1 out of 5 stars Just an uninspiring picture book and nothing more useful.......2004-08-28

If you're looking for lasting decorating ideas, look elsewhere. If you want to wanly leaf through a coffee table picture book and read brief captions, borrow this from the library. The book is not formatted to inspire, it was created to showcase Andrew Wood's photography, and a name was added to the book: Stephanie Hoppen, whomever she may be. Isolating chapters include Easter Celebrations, Spring Flowers, a chapter on White Foods (!!!)... Shame on all involved in this unethical money-making venture.

4 out of 5 stars A Pretty Picture Book.......2001-09-27

If you're looking for great decorating ideas, this is a pretty nice book, BUT, it also has pictures of flowers and food, so it's not wall-to-wall decorating. There are no earth-shattering decor revelations here, but if you collect books to flip though to get ideas, or just love looking at pretty things, this one's not too shabby.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever your environement (loft or castle) you'll love this.......2000-05-20

The authors took their subject seriously. They considered it as theme that had to be illustrated long various style-lifes and types of architecture. You will find a different point of view with Julia Bird and Pia Tryde "The simple home". In this other book, style is uniform, yet wonderful and easy to get inspiration from. White on white is a powerful concept well illustrated. This book will please everyone.

4 out of 5 stars COOL WHITE ROOMS INVITE PEACE.......2000-05-12

I really enjoyed this book. It is the right size and length for a decorating book and is more diverse than other all "white" decorating books I have read in the past. The styles range from classic to contemporary with a little flea market chic thrown in...
