Book Description
Roger E. Bilstein's Flight in America has won acclaim as the foremost history of one of the twentieth century's landmark achievements--human flight. In this revised and expanded third edition, Bilstein chronicles changes in military, commercial, and space aviation in the 1990s. He offers a glimpse of the developments one might expect in the new millennium.
Richly illustrated and splendidly written, Flight in America charts the manifold ways in which the airplane has touched virtually every feature of American enterprise, history, and culture--leisure and business travel, commercial transportation, national defense, and imaginative literature. More than 125 lively photographs document the beauty of flying machines and the daring of the men and women who invented, built, and flew them.Praise for previous editions:"The most comprehensive survey of the history of American aeronautics and space flight yet published."--Technology and Culture
"Bilstein casts wide and far to net virtually everything from technological trends and research and development to the effect of air travel on the expansion of major league baseball in the 1950s and early 1960s... A superior work that will satisfy aero buffs and professionals alike."--Journal of American History
"By far the best book on man and air travel yet written."--Cleveland Plain Dealer
"For those who won't soon be able to visit the National Air and Space Museum, perhaps the next best thing would be to read Flight in America."--Chronicle of Higher Education

great book, poorly constructed.......2007-09-10
this is a great book for any aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The book starts off with the ornithopter and ends in space travel/missels, with complete detail. the author does a great job of explaining political, military and economic impacts on the aviation industry. The only bad part is im on the 3rd chapter and the book is practically falling apart and i bought it new.
Missing pages.......2007-05-14
The book itself is great but I was missing pages from 52 to 87. I am not sure if the book is printed that way or of my book was the exception. Just make sure when you first get the book to check for missing pages.
General History of Flight.......2005-07-31
A very readable, quick and general history of flight in the United States. Bilstein is a noted historian and provides a narrative history of aviation that while comprehensive is a little disjointed in parts.
The Making of a New Aerospace History, and it's Most Welcome.......2004-06-22
No one writes better syntheses of major topics in the history of air and space than Roger E. Bilstein, now retired from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. "Flight in America" is one of those exceptionally powerful syntheses that lays out a broad master narrative of the subject. Originally published in 1984, this work has now been through three editions, each refining and expanding the work to incorporate new understandings and broader perspectives. Indeed, "Flight in America" is THE place to start in any serious investigation of the development of air and space in the United States. Along with two other broad interpretive works-"Enterprise of Flight: The American Aviation and Aerospace Industry" (Smithsonian, 2001) and "Testing Aircraft, Exploring Space: An Illustrated History of NACA and NASA" (Johns Hopkins, 2003)-"Flight in America" offers a comprehensive narrative of the subject.
In this volume Bilstein progresses chronologically from the time of the Wright brothers, barnstorming, and early military aviation to the rise of aviation as a business, the advent of airlines, and the technological progress of the airplane. He then spend considerable effort discussing the role of the airplane in World War II before moving into post-war developments with jet airliners, global military reach made possible with aircraft, and the beginning and development of the space age. In every sense, he offers a satisfying survey of aerospace issues that is useful both to students and scholars alike.
At a fundamental level, "Flight in America" represents an attempt to help coalesce a "New Aerospace History." Like the "New Western History" or the "New Social History" that has been so important in the last twenty years, this approach represents a significant transformation that has largely been, although not exclusively, taking place in the field. Specifically, the "New Aerospace History" is committed to relating the subject to the larger issues of society, politics, and culture, taking a more sophisticated view of the technology than historians previously held. In the past, many writers on aerospace history held a fascination with the machinery, which has been largely anthropomorphized and often seen as "magical."
The "New Aerospace History" embodied in this work moves beyond a fetish for the artifact to emphasize the broader role of the air- and spacecraft, and more importantly the whole technological system including not just the vehicle but also the other components that make up the aerospace climate, as an integral part of the human experience. This is not to be understood as lacking an interest in the artifact, or being artifactless. Rather it is an affirmation that one moves through reason and study to a larger understanding. It suggests that many unanswered questions are present in helping the development of modern flight, and that inquisitive individuals seek to know that which they do not understand. This assumption arises within historians and is based on their understanding of humans, for technological systems are constructions of the human mind or minds.
This work emphasizes, therefore, research in aerospace topics that are no longer limited to the vehicle-centered, internalist, style of history that had gone before. "Flight in America" offers all of us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in this truly challenging new approach to the field. Highly recommended.
WHAT A WONDERFUL BOOK!.......2000-07-30
This is one of those books that you look for, but seldom find. It is written so that it is easily read, easily understood, and easily absorbed. It is well researched, full of interesting facts and personal stories, and never lets up the pace of delivering an interesting, informative and educational narrative. I found it so much fun to read and understand, that I finished the entire book in three days, then read it again to reap what I might have missed the first time through. The author did an outstanding job of compiling and presenting complicated facts, dry figures, and personal stories into one very interesting and fun narrative. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to know every step of the race to flight history in the United states from the Wright brothers, to space exploration. The author managed to include almost every detail in this history of flight that you could ever want to know and still keep the story line from becoming boring, or slowing down once throughout the entire book. This wonderful work would be worth twice the asking price. I am glad that I found it, and am really glad that I now own it as part of my historical collection.

Great Insights into Wright's Design Strategies Throughout His Career.......2007-07-22
Superb book with great insights into recurring design strategies that extended throughout his career. As a Frank Lloyd Wright homeowner and architect with extensive Wright research and visits to his other residential projects, I can attest to the power of the design strategies articulated in this book. The book is well written with beautiful illustrations. The only shortcoming of the book is the contemporary examples in the back of the book which pale in comparison to the great architectural works by Mr. Wright. All things considered this book is highly recommended for Wright enthusiasts and architects.
Great Book.......2007-06-22
This is a great book, giving insight into Wright'd designs. Good pictures of details of some of his houses that are not found in other sources and really nice 3D exploded views of some of the more important ones.
Rosetta Stone of Wright's Magic.......2007-04-27
In this superb book, Hildebrand attempts no less than a definitive explanation of the method used by Wright to weave his architectural magic. Using the theories of "prospect and refuge" & "order and complexity" he
sets out to establish what he calls the "pattern" that reveals itself in Wright's residential designs. Backed by detailed exposition, plans, diagrams and photos of specific examples he convincingly does just that: present the "pattern" that, to a greater or lesser degree, permeates Wright's work. Also covered are various detail items which are often, though with a lesser frequency, present.
To the serious student of Wright's organic architecture, this book is an indispensible resource.
The Title is Accurate.......2007-01-07
Nice book. The author has broken thru all the FLW complexity and clearly and methodically documented the Pattern and Meaning of FLW houses. The isomentric drawings are fantastic! I have been to several of his houses and I love them but could not pull together what the main concepts were. This book is also great for non-architects. I can now continue my passion of FLW research and see the "patterns". My goal is to transend the FLW concepts of "prospect/refuge" in architecture. My only complaint is that some of the black and white prictures are difficult to read. Color pictures would have been nice. Aside from this deficiency the book in my opinion is the best FLW available. I reccomend one read and study this book before visiting his works or reading anything else on FLW.
Wright's Space Rightly Revealed.......1999-05-21
Hildebrand really puts you into a selection of Wright's built spaces; you can imagine what it is like to move through and experience the changing spaces (height, length, turns) in several of Wright's famous houses, even if you've not visited in person. Hildebrand's extended discussion --and demonstration through stunning "3D" exploded diagrams-- of the primordial concepts of Refuge/shelter (those dark fireplace cores and inglenooks) and Prospect/outlook (distant elevated windows) applied to buildings dating to different stages of Wright's practice is most original and convincing. Author's scholarly prose is serviceable rather than equally soaring. Highly useful small plans (newly corrected and with compass indications!) and evocative B/W photographs supplement those amazing diagrams by Wm. Hook.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Interiors
ASIN: 1571455256 |
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated volume of the imaginative interior spaces designed by visionary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright showcases his unique ability to create a building in harmony with its surrounding environment. Featured in this comprehensive volume are many of the designs that would earn him a reputation for genius. Acclaimed architectural photographers Thomas Heinz and Balthazar Korab capture the revolutionary impact that Wright's body of work had, and continues to have, on the craft that was his avocation. Their images pay tribute to the man who has been called the single greatest influence on twentieth-century design.
Customer Reviews:
What I want in a FLW book: lots of big color pictures.......2007-03-25
Some books on Frank Lloyd Wright do not fill the page with the photo, they'll have a white border. Others will have a number of black and white photos. Others will have as much as half the book in text. This book has none of those. It's 90% or more big color photos with up to half of them filling the page. It differs from many FLW books in that it is mainly photos of interiors. Most of the photographs were taken by Balthazar Korab and Paul Rocheleau and they did an excellent job. I own about 50 FLW books. I try to buy those that are large and filled with photos of his buildings. Another unique aspect of this book is there are several photos looking up at the ceiling of various FLW buildings which is a real treat. There are probably over 150 photos here.
The book is catagorized into Integrity of Site and Structure, Common and Private Spaces, Multilevel Interiors, Sheltering Eaves and Balconies, Indoor/Outdoor Gardens and the Grammar of Simplicity. Most of the buildings presented are his most famous ones. Printed in 2001 it's definitely worth a low used book price. For these reasons it is a must buy for the FLW fan of color photos in a relatively large book for a very reasonable price.

Book Description
This book sets out a vision of â~intelligent spacesâ and describes the progress that has been made towards realisation. The context for Intelligent Spaces (or iSpaces) is the world where ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and sensor systems disappear as they become embedded into physical objects and the spaces in which we live, work and play. The ultimate vision is that this embedded technology provides us with intelligent and contextually relevant support, augmenting our lives and experience of the physical world in a benign and non-intrusive manner.
The ultimate vision is challenging, there are technical barriers, especially in the integration of complex systems and in the creation of intelligent software, as well as social and economic barriers.
This book explores what is technically possible and what users will need for the future. Academic and industrial researchers in Computer Science, IT and Communications, as well as practitioners will find this key reading as it delivers practical and implementable current research.
Customer Reviews:
mundane descriptions.......2007-01-31
I read this book hoping for some truly innovative descriptions of current and future work in this field of iSpaces. The chapters are mostly routine accounts. Nothing here is really strikingly original. Not that the narratives are wrong. It's just that, perhaps depending on your prior knowledge of this field, there's nothing here that is not a standard extrapolation of known ideas.
RFID tags get the most mention across the chapters. Possibly because this is the subject of serious industry efforts. The main deployment is currently to improve supply chain management. Which is uncontroversial. What is potentially more divisive appears to be the use of the tags for items that are sold to the end user, and the continuing use of these tags after sale, perhaps to track user habits. An unresolved issue.
The index is somewhat rudimentary. Jini and JXTA are mentioned in the text, but omitted from the index, for example.
A very informative book.......2007-01-13
Being an article compilation, this book doesn't go beyond some equations and applications of the ISpaces, it is an excellent book for those who are looking a easy introduction in this subject.

This is a book back in history. The biography of two males come to me for the coolest time for kids! So, if you are a young child, you may like to read a biography two males. Gruateened you will love it!!
Fun and loaded with facts!.......2005-02-24
This book is really good. I like the way the author provides information about Orville and Wilbur individually, instead of just lumping them together as "the Wright brothers." I also liked reading about their childhood, how they got interested in flying, and how they developed their airplane.
A Tale of Two Inventors.......2000-10-10
Read about the life of those amazing inventors, Wilbur and Oriville Wright, as they learn explore, and create a flying machine!

Customer Reviews:
Mmm, evil Kira!.......2007-01-01
I had always loved the "Mirror Universe" episodes from all of the various Trek series. It gave a refreshing respite from the regular Star Trek universe where everyone is always supposed to be so darned high-minded and goody-goody. And the episode featuring evil Kira and Garak was always my favourite of these. So when I saw this book on the store shelves with "Intendant Kira" featured in all her wicked glory right on the cover I knew I HAD to read it.
I was disappointed that evil Garak is actually not in the book much and is just a minor character. Instead this 2-volume story focuses on the female characters of the parallel universe. This story takes place sometime before the DS9 characters rediscover the parallel universe.
It details the backstabbing political intrigues involved as Kira maneuvers for ever more power within the Klingon-Cardassian Empire, which in the parallel universe succeeded in crushing the former Terran Empire thanks to our universe's James T. Kirk having earlier convinced the parallel universe's Spock to spread a pacifist message there.
But there are others vying for the same power that Kira wants, or seeking to keep her from it. Among them are Deanna Troi, who occupies a position of great influence as lover of Worf, head of the Empire. Also Enabran Tain, head of the Obsidian Order, who sends his crack Terran assassin Agent Seven on a mission to infiltrate Kira's power base. And Tain's disgruntled rival Gul Dukat, who also seeks to regain some of his former power.
I thought the first of the two books was great, as we get LOTS of evil Kira, plus the cool spy intrigues of Agent Seven. Book 2 on the other hand.... well, I'll write a review for that one soon too, but just let me say I thought it wasn't quite as good.
But I still LOVE the mirror universe and wish they would write MORE stories taking place there. It's got a lot more gritty atmosphere and has the possibility to tell some very edgy stories.
So should you get this book? Sure, it's just plain a lot of fun. -- But don't get your hopes up too high for a brilliant conclusion. Just sit back and enjoy the ride (especially this first volume).
A must-read.......2004-08-21
This is a great crossover novel. I really enjoyed the B'Elanna of this 'reality': she embraces her Klingon half, hates her human half, and befrieds Seven. You should read this, if you like DS9, TNG, OR VOY.
Star Trek Dark Passions I of II - Absolutely stunning!.......2004-05-23
Over the years, Susan Wright has proven herself to be an extremely reliable author in the Star Trek universe and this "Dark Passions" duology is no exception to that. I found the entire story to be thoroughly intriguing, extremely well paced and the characterizations to be perfect for what one might expect of these characters in the mirror universe.
With this small duology, Susan Wright took the rather apropos approach of building upon the known and unknown characters in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine mirror universe episodes and created an extraordinary story that actually takes place prior to start of the series, giving her the advantage of having all of the characters to use and giving her the opportunity to create a much more original story to include killing certain characters off. This is an extremely powerful story that involves the majority of the female characters in the current Star Trek universe, proving their "mettle" so to speak and using them to perfection.
The only true complaint I would lodge about this duology falls more into place with the decisions of those at Pocket Books than with the author and that is the fact that this "novel" was broken into two books. Considering the rather standard sized text and the fact that the first book is only 232 pages and the second is 200 pages, this could've and should've been one novel instead of an obvious ploy to ply an extra $6.99 out of "passionate" Star Trek readers; bad on the powers that be at Pocket Books.
The cover art for this novel makes this and the second novel that much more intriguing considering the originality of the story.
The Premise:
As it might spoil the story a bit I won't delve too deeply into the premise of this wonderful story. Suffice it to say, this story involves the majority of the major female characters from "The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" in extremely enlightening roles carrying an extremely original story to fruition through healthy amounts of intrigue and action...
Overall, I highly recommend this and the second book in this small duology to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction and especially to those that thoroughly enjoyed the mirror universe episodes on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. {ssintrepid}
One of the best........2002-10-14
this book is one of the best depictions of the mirror universe ive seen... it caugth me in the first few pages i read it (both volumes) in 3 days...
It would be hard to do better.
A fun ride in the Mirror Universe.......2001-08-08
Initially when I found out this was a two book series I was annoyed b/c I felt that it was really one book broken into two to increase revenue. After reading both, I realize that although this is partially true, the two books each have a very different flavor to them.
Book One really sets the tone with the mad rush for power in the former Terran Empire. In the beginning none of the charachters really came across as one of the "good guys" (or gals as the case may be) and it wasn't until about halfway through the story that it became clear who the protagonist was. There are lots of cameo's by charachters from NegGen, DS9, & Voyager who show up in some very unexpected places; I half expected Kirk or Uhuro to be thrown into the mix. In addition, there are also some very unlikely romantic pairings, which will keep the reader off balance - as one reviewer mentioned "this is not your father's Star Trek".
I can honestly say that the plots twists kept me guessing all the way through both books. Both of which are a quick read and lots of fun. Susan Wright left the door open for further books in this continuity, but these will be tough to top.
Book Description
Intendant Kira, now Overseer for the entire Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, has entered into a dangerous liaison with Annika Hansen, unaware that Hansen is actually an agent of the Obsidian Order who has orders to kill Kira when the time is right. But her treacherous alliance is not the only danger the Intendant faces. Both Deanna Troi, the power-hungry consort of Regent Worf, and B'Elanna Torres, the half-human Intendant of the Sol System, are threatened by Kira's unquenchable ambition, and would be glad to see her deposed -- or worse.
As four powerful women scheme for control of the Alliance, who will survive? And who will claim the ultimate prize?

Customer Reviews:
Not quite as good as the first book.......2007-01-07
This is the second half of a 2-volume story set in Star Trek's "Mirror Universe". Overall, I would say that while it was good, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first volume.
The thing I really liked about the first volume was that it had a pretty even balance between Agent (of the Cardassian Obsidian Order) Seven and evil Kira. We got to see LOTS of both. But in this second volume, the focus becomes mainly on Seven, while Kira becomes more of just a supporting character. Also, I found some situations seemed to be solved too easily and implausibly. And it sometimes felt a little rushed compared to the first volume, like the author was trying to squeeze in the ending under a certain page limit.
And by the end of the book it becomes ENTIRELY focused on Seven, and ends with a rather preachy ending that I didn't like at all (--because I'm rooting for the BAD guys, and that's the whole reason why I love the Mirror Universe!) So to really love this book I'd say that you should be a major fan of Seven. (Hey, I like her and all, but evil Kira is one of my FAVOURITE Star Trek characters of all, and I guess I was disappointed that she didn't get equal coverage this time out.)
In addition, the book's cover is misleading and will no doubt leave many Janeway and Crusher fans in disappointment, as Janeway is just a very minor character here and Beverly Crusher is barely even in the book. The cover SHOULD have featured B'Elanna Torres and Deanna Troi instead of them.
Also, like some other reviewers I wonder if these 2 books could not have just as easily been published together in 1 volume?
But still, I feel happy to have had a chance to pay another visit to that twisted dimension that is the Mirror Universe. I hope that the people putting these Star Trek books out will hear me when I say that I would love to see MORE books featuring adventures set there -- preferably with more focus on the wonderful baddies who populate it.
Star Trek Dark Passions II of II - A great conclusion!.......2004-05-23
Star Trek "Dark Passions" book two of two is the glorious continuation of and conclusion to the first novel in this small duology that uses a majority of current Star Trek's strongest female characters from the mirror universe. Just as in the first novel, Susan Wright's extraordinary writing skills such as exceptional pacing, thoroughly intriguing plot set up and execution and strong characterizations stand out brilliantly in this novel.
As stated in my review for the first novel in this small duology, the only downside to this story has nothing to do with the author as Pocket Books chose to skim their faithful readers for an extra $6.99 by breaking this story into two novels when they could've easily cut down on the pitch for the type and published this great story in one novel.
Just as in the first novel, the cover art is an exception to the rule for when this novel was published.
The Premise:
Book two carries the story on in which Seven (Annika Hansen) who in the mirror universe is an Obsidian Order agent, is continuing to stay close to Kira Nerys in the hopes of carrying out her mission but she is also having second thoughts about her goals in life as she is for the first time in her life thinking for herself which can and will have some serious ramifications for those she's dealing with...
As stated above, this is an exceptional conclusion to a wonderful story that I highly recommend to any and all fans of Star Trek fans and especially to those that thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek Deep Space Nine's mirror universe episodes just as I did. {ssintrepid}
Volume 2.......2002-10-14
The 2nd volume was just as good as the first... its hard to make a sequel or part two just as good a s the first but they did... it is a must read.
I've continued to resist the urge to throw it away........2002-04-14
Contiues the problems from the first novel. Bad/predictable plotting, stretched thin and unbelievable dramatics. The persistant use of the idea (promogated in the series admittedly) of bisexual equals evil (after all, only the -bad- Kira beds down every woman (and man and eunich) she comes across.
Plot developements with Troi and B'Elanna that might have saved the book were destroyed by ill placed melodramatics.
Oh, and the cover is misleading, though Crusher and Janeway appear in the novel, they are less than afterthoughts.
Mirror personalities.......2001-10-10
The most striking thing about the two books is how many of our favorite characters have personalities which aren't just different, but either evil or ineffectual. The story centers on Seven's battle with Kira which makes her focus on discovering her true self. With the exception of Troi, Worf, and Torres, most other characters are only touched on. Kira is evil personified. Worf is only a puppet, not a true Klingon. Troi has a complex personality, but definitely not the caring Troi we know. Seven is also complex as the central character.
Once you leave the "real" Star Trek Universe behind, the story is entertaining, but it is very dark. There is a sexual content as well, but not explicitly described. This second book is much more enjoyable than the first.
Book Description
This activity book tells the amazing true story of how two bicycle-making brothers from Ohio, with no more than high-school educations, accomplished a feat that forever changed the world. At a time when most people still hadn't ridden in an automobile, Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first powered, heavier-than-air flying machine. Woven throughout the heartwarming story of the two brothers are activities that highlight their ingenuity and problem-solving abilities as they overcame many obstacles to achieve controlled flight. The four forces of flight-lift, thrust, gravity, and drag-and how the Wright brothers mastered them are explained in clear, simple text. Activities include making a Chinese flying top, building a kite, bird watching, and designing a paper glider, and culminate with an activity in which readers build a rubber-band-powered flyer. Included are photographs just released from the Wright brothers' personal collection, along with diagrams and illustrations. The history of human flight and its pioneers, a time line, and a complete resource section for students are also provided.
Customer Reviews:
Experiments are iffy.......2006-09-20
The actual reading and stories are accurate and valuable information. Many experiments and activities are not very clear or able to be performed as written. This is a better book for reading and the wonderful photographs.
Wright Brothers for Kids ---- Awesome Read!.......2004-08-16
My daughter had to do a book report last year on the Wright Brothers. This was a great historical book that was very readable to any child older than 9 years of age. I also read the book myself as I find this topic interesting and was very impressed with the history and activities this book introduced. I believe it was a perfect mixture of reading and activities to show the practical application of what you had just learned. My daughter and I both loved it. This book will definately increase the facination towards flying or at least give one an appreciation as to how far we've come in flight travel.
