Book Description

From the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame, the Place de la Concorde to Montmartre, life in Paris is charged with elegance—from private homes and the varied architectural styles along its boulevards, to the quays of the Seine, winding streets, cosy bistros, and intimate restaurants. Gardens, including the Luxembourg and the Tuileries, provide an outdoor paradise in the heart of the city. Lavishly illustrated, Living in Paris includes an extensive guide to the capitol's best addresses; it is an inspiring resource for anyone who has strolled along the streets or dreamed of visiting the City of Lights.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Being There .......2007-02-13

Beautifully illustrated, this book takes you on a well organised journey through the main districts of Paris but also informs on a differnent asthetic level such as the essential spirit of this city as seen through its architecture and its culture. The grande old history from the baroque and ancient regieme onwards is elegantly sought out with a particularly interesting chapter containing old master craftsmen at their trades and where you might find them. This is a book that you can simiply sit down with and devour in a glutonous way. I found this book, when sitting in one of those well heeled, and gracious bookshops, that sell good coffee and deadly cakes! Long story short - Amazon to the rescue and I am now enjoying the glories of it's pages right from my armchair. For anyone who plans to visit Paris (like myself)and/or anyone who loves things of days gone by, and wants to do so in thier mind.... give this a look. It's cheaper than an airfare and nearly as good.

5 out of 5 stars Armchair and Reality Paris.......2006-06-07

I bought this book when it first came out, as a friend was leaving that very day to go to Paris. It kept me going until I was able to make my first visit in 2003. I have made two more visits since then.

I still go back to it and tell friends about it. It is one of the best photographed Paris books that I own. It brings you and your armchair right into the best of it...and allows you to savor the beauty. Voila!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ah Paris.......2001-04-25

I'm surprised the other reviewer only gave this 3 stars. I think the photograghy is sumptuous and the text is quite lovely. These are the spots I remember and go back to in my imagination.

3 out of 5 stars It's The Pictures, After All.......1999-12-16

The photographs within these covers are gorgeous - it's a perfect souvenir of Paris. In fact, if you buy this, you can think about leaving your camera at home. The text, translated from the French (original title 'Art de Vivre a Paris') is a bit gushy, and you might wonder, as I did, how much has indeed been lost in the reinterpretation. Never mind. Living In Paris has been in and out of print, so when it's available, get it! It's still cheaper than taking 5 rolls of your own shots to the Fotomat. And these are the pictures you'll wish you had taken.

1 out of 5 stars This book is sadly lacking!.......2007-10-14

I was so totally disgusted by the photography, the layouts and the
story line! My Williams and Sonoma catalog came the same day and
I am sad to say it was over the top better then this book! PATHETIC!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-28

I thought about buying this book for months. I expected sophisticaed and unique projects which would excite me but did not find them. The projects are basic. Yes, the house is very beautiful and shows well. If you are interested in a decorating book this may be for you.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful! .......2006-08-12

Inspiration abounds in this book~I love how it features the same rooms, accessorized differently for the seasons. That is my favorite way to decorate~
Also, if you love old homes and restoration, this book provides inspiration for that as well. Wonderful! And the chandeliers, oohlala!

5 out of 5 stars I really love it!.......2006-07-06

Maybe the best book I ever had, so beautiful layout and pictures, wonderful feelings!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh/Creative Ideas for a Beautiful Old House........2005-11-04

Midwest of Cannon Falls (Minnesota) (...) is a company built around holiday and seasonal decorations. They produced this book to illustrate what can be done in the way of decorating a home to show its best during each of the four seasons, during many of the holidays we celebrate.

Part of the magic about this book is the house used as the background for the decorations. It's a beautiful house, beautifully restored. One thing you have to thank the folk there for doing is saving this house that had been abandoned and was scheduled for demolition. They then moved the house to their location and did a great restoration job.

The rest of the book is a set of delightful picture ideas. While it's unlikely you would ever duplicate it exactly, the ideas in the book are fresh and creative. Now all that you need is a nice old house like River House.

Book Description

"The country of thousand lakes" is also a country of beautiful architecture and interior design: modern Finland is a traveler's secret, offering charming hotels, B&Bs, and restaurants tucked into sophisticated cities like Hanko and Helsinki-one of the art nouveau capitals of the world. Amid natural beauty, Finns live well, with their own unique style: this new Living In volume takes readers inside city homes built by Alvar Aalto and into the lake-country cottages decorated with touches of Marimekko and Toikka. Living In Finland also means enjoying culinary specialties like caviar served with créme fraéche, crayfish dishes, and more. This look into Finland's style speaks to travelers, to those interested in the heritage of contemporary design, and to Finnish-Americans who will rediscover their own traditions in this sumptuously-illustrated book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A work of art.......2007-03-09

This book exceeded my expectations. I wanted a book with pictures, but every page is beautifully illustrated with superb photographs. It is a splendid tour which will be a much appreciated gift. Highly recommended.

One problem - the packing was partly opened when it arrived as the sticky tape had come loose on the outside, but the book was undamaged.

5 out of 5 stars Living in Finland.......2006-03-15

This is a beautiful and inspiring invitation to enter the seasonal lives of middle class Finns. It demonstrates how Finnish architecture, design and art draw inspiration from and are sensitive to the natural environment. The section on Finnish summer houses is superb. An up-to-date directory at the end of the book is really helpful for someone like me planning a trip to Finland later in the year. Highly recommended.

The many shades of white, beautifully complemented by the velvety verdure of evergreens and ivy, are a perfect choice for holiday trimmings--the decorations, the accents and accessories, the table settings. Glowing with candlelight and sparkling with sun-kissed snow, these pages are filled with glorious arrays of white and green. Noted designer Tricia Foley has a way with white: dozens of elegant little ornaments, a creamware-bedecked table, a frosty tree encrusted with crystal and silver decorations, an all-white gingerbread house, even a boxwood-swagged gauzy bed canopy. "Like a Currier and Ives print or a snow-capped New England steeple," Foley reminds us, "the image of the perfect white Christmas is firmly etched in our minds." Her visual feast shows how truly stunning holiday decor can be when planned in a symphony of whites. --Amy Handy

Book Description

Everyone knows that the best Christmas is a white Christmas-a traditional celebration with snow capping the eaves, a fire roaring in the fireplace, and a mistletoe ball hanging in the doorway. Tricia Foley, best-selling author of Having Tea, Linens and Lace, and The Natural Home, brings back the magic of the time-honored customs, along with her own white-on-white decorating style, to create the kind of Christmas that will make treasured memories for years to come.

With ideas for every room of the house, Foley shows how to borrow from the colors of nature in winter 'pure white and evergreen' to dress up the house for the holidays. She includes simple yet timeless suggestions for draping greens over the bed canopy, hanging all-white stockings of every size and fabric, lighting with votive candles, candelabra, and sconces, and wrapping with handmade papers and raffia ribbons. For entertaining, White Christmas presents the perfect Christmas tea, with snowy linens and homemade scones. Helpful tip boxes cover Christmas lore, favorite tales, and Christmas crafts, and a resource section provides useful lists of addresses, related books, and holiday songs.

For anyone who wants to make the most of the holidays, Tricia Foley's White Christmas is the ideal holiday decorating and entertaining companion.

Martha Stewart's Christmas remains a classic cooking and decorating guide for the Christmas season. The book can be viewed as an elaborate timeline for preparing for December 25--indeed, Martha claims the book was written and photographed in "real time" from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day. Along the way, Martha teaches you how to make plum pudding, 24 different types of cookies, and a holiday party menu featuring cassoulet for 100. For Christmas Day dinner, a towering croquembouche is perhaps the finest culinary feature of the menu, which features roast ducklings with wild rice, chestnut, and cranberry dressing. Martha also provides tips on decorating trees, making ornaments, gift-wrapping papers, and making beautiful wreaths and topiaries. There's even advice on making up gift baskets of the cookies, conserves, and puddings that you've created yourself. Martha herself admits that "it's true, we did get carried away"--she creates an elaborate gingerbread mansion--but most of the recipes and crafts are easy to follow and produce great results. Martha Stewart's Christmas is a real gift. C.B. Delaney

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Shallow book like the author.......2003-01-14

There are better Christmas books on decorating and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful christmas book!.......2002-12-17

I can see this book is not new. It is to me, and I find is very inpirational! I use it every year for Christmas, for getting the house ready, for baking, for decorating and setting the tables, for ideas on how to use my plates, bowls and dishes in different ways, for altering things I already own into new settings -
I do own a few of her C-mas books, this is by far the best one. If you celebrate this holiday - or just want to arrange a beautiful winter feast, you will not be sorry to own this book!(I use it as gifts for friends, and have already bought three..)

4 out of 5 stars Lovely book.......2002-02-18

I loved the 'feel' of this book, very festive. The presentation is beautiful.
What disappointed me a little was that there was no pattern for the gingerbread mansion that was featured in the book, which was the main reason I bought it. It's a little too easy for me to just be told to 'use your imagination' and 'the possibilities are endless'. I expected more!
Other than that, it is a very nice addition to my book collection with timeless ideas and inspirations, or just to browse through when christmas season comes around.

4 out of 5 stars Something for every ability and interest level.......2001-12-10

Yesterday I made Noel Nut Balls and the chocolate-dipped almond cookies for the fifth or sixth Christmas in a row, and chances are I'll make several of the other recipes before the end of the holidays. The cookie recipes are easy to follow, guaranteed to please and the cookies themselves can be frozen for weeks without any change in texture, appearance or flavor. However, I can't imagine many busy people whipping up the cassoulet or even the fruitcake unless they are experienced cooks who can confidently evaluate and execute rather expensive (in terms of ingredients) recipes.
The craft and gift ideas run the range from easy and very rewarding (such as making your own wrapping paper, which turns out to be a great activity to do with children-- and those gold and coppery designs look sensational under the tree) to the fantastical...like using a jeweller's drill to make holes in nuts for decorative purposes. Still, this is a book full of ideas for holiday activities and creations for people with the full range of abilities and available time and it really is enjoyable to read and to look through.
I am buying a second copy because the first has literally fallen apart. This is the second Martha Stewart book to have broken into pieces (Entertaining did, as well) and I do question the quality of binding.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Useful Christmas Book I've Found.......2000-01-05

I adore Martha Stewart. She's a terrific teacher and this is absolutely the best Christmas "idea" book I've ever read. I love the recipes and photos. It's a book I will treasure and one I will use over and over again. Thank you, Martha!

If you have dined at any of the restaurants listed in this book, you'll want it (Le Grand Véfour, Jules Verne, Taillevant...) The photography is stunning, and it is an historical view of the greatest restaurants in the world. There is something magical about looking at the pages and saying "Wow! I sat right there... and enjoyed one of the most memorable meals of my life!"

If you have never dined at any of these restaurants, you may wish to buy it- just so you can plan a trip there......

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ornament Making Source!.......2006-01-25

COtM is a fabulous source of inspiration when it comes to making ornaments. The photos show each project in its final stage, a few have diagrams to show folding technique, and for those projects using a pattern, one is provided (although you'll have to enlarge at times). The projects are great for beginner and intermediate crafters as the directions mostly involve glue, ribbon, beads, glitter and paint. There are a few advanced projects but those mostly deal with oven and/or air dry clay. These are great rainy-day projects the whole family can enjoy because the instructions tell you all the items you will need and most are only 4 step processes. Finally, for those who feel their place is in a hardware store rather than a craft store, there are even projects for you! Various non-traditional elements are used to make some of the lovely ornaments too. Well worth a purchase.

    Book Description

This complete guide to Tiki culture in North America and abroad lists, describes, and reviews every known Tiki bar, Polynesian restaurant, and other site of interest to fans of "Polynesian Pop." From Tiki godfathers such as Edgar Leeteg and Don the Beachcomber to contemporary Tiki artists like Shag and Bosko, this resource covers all things Tiki in prose that is witty, entertaining, and essential for anyone who has ever stepped up to a bar, glanced up at the pufferfish hanging from the ceiling, and ordered a Singapore Sling. In addition to the exhaustive listings, recipes for classic cocktails, a glossary of Tiki terms, and resources for buying Tiki goods and artifacts are also included. Reminiscences of famous points of interest that have closed are provided for the completist, for historical perspective, and for those seeking information on the current status of a favorite Tiki site.

    5 out of 5 stars book.......2007-09-15

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Upgrade.......2007-06-27

So you already have a no doubt well-worn copy of the first edition of "TRT" and you're wondering if it's worth buying this new one?

    Yes. Get it.

Sure, you've got the expected updates to the fast-changing world of tiki, along with more of the tell-it-like-it-is reviews that were the first edition's trademark.

But Teitelbaum has also expanded the historical information about locations that are no longer with us. And there seem to be more photos and other "urban archaeological" tidbits sprinkled throughout, giving it more of the flavor of Sven Kirsten's "Book of Tiki". These are welcome improvements, and it makes this edition just as suited for armchair reading as it is for actual trip planning.

Maps, perhaps one at the beginning of each state's section, would've been nice. Many of these tiki spots are in the suburbs, which can make it difficult to tell what's near the particular city you're visiting if you're not familiar with the names of the surrounding towns. But that's not enough of a quibble to detract from a solid, five-star rating.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to include in all your retro vacation planning.......2005-10-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have used the reviews while on several different trips, to Las Vegas, San Diego, and in Southern California. A lot of this info could not be found elsewhere!

A word of advice to lucky purchasers of this book however--do double check, call ahead, and make sure your destination still exists! I have made several blunders as well assuming that a place was open for lunch when many are nightspots only.

That said, a great guide (and check out the inside of the Hanalei/Red Lion Hotel in San Diego--the bartenders make a mean scorpion in a nifty souvenier bowl!!)

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, needs updating.......2005-09-14

In the ever changing world of Tiki land, you need an up to date reference. Please update this great book with a new edition!!

4 out of 5 stars Scattershot but worthwhile.......2003-09-13

Tiki Road Trip is an excellent, if somewhat scattershot guide of Tiki bars, restaurants, and other Polynesian-themed facilities. Teitelbaum provides names, addresses, reviews and in some cases, photos to help you plan your next driving trip.

The author's reviews vary from cursory to pretty detailed. His emphasis is on the "Tikiness" of each place, based on decor, atmosphere, and food/drink. I didn't always agree with his "TiPSY" rating of some places, primarily because his emphasis seems to be primarily on Tiki decorations. I felt that Teitelbaum did not give enough weight to rarer architectural features (e.g. lava rock construction, A-framed roofs, etc.) in calculating his TiPSY scores. However, he states in the beginning that TiPSYness ratings are subjective, so any criticism described here is very minor.

This book isn't so much a road trip guide, as it is a compendium of Tiki joints past and present. While some places are alive and well, Teitelbaum includes places that are closed - in some cases for many years. Some of the Tiki spots documented are long forgotten, and the only testament that they even existed is a mug or matchbook. Also the addresses or, in some cases, cities of some of the spots listed are not provided.

A few improvements would help with subsequent editions of this guide. An index would be useful. Tables listing Tiki joints by TiPSYness, category, etc. would also be beneficial. Another recommendation is the inclusion of maps, at least at the state level. Finally, color photos are a must. Teitelbaum includes some outstanding pictures, unfortunately all in black and white.

While this book could be a bit better, it is still a must have for Tiki buffs.
