        Book Description

Traditional office work, characterized by repetitive clerical tasks, is rapidly giving way to "knowledge work," characterized by the creative application and exchange of information. In response, architects around the world are leaving aside the old cubicle grid to design imaginative, high-tech offices that foster knowledge work and, at the same time, help workers balance the competing demands of colleagues, customers, and family. The forty-three exceptional workplaces profiled in this timely volume have all been completed within the last six years and serve a wide variety of organizations, both private and public, small and large. Examples range from the headquarters of an advertising firm where one enormous table seats all two hundred employees, facilitating communication, to a BMW plant where the factory production line runs through and above the administrative offices, unifying the corporate community.

The authors skillfully distinguish the primary trends in contemporary office design by dividing their engagingly written case studies among four chapters, each dedicated to a particular type of workplace. "Academies" encourage the sharing of knowledge within a corporate structure; "Guilds" allow the members of a profession to interact as peers; "Agoras" bring the workplace closer to the marketplace and to civic life; and "Lodges" combine the home and the office. Two hundred extraordinary color photographs and fifty architectural drawings show how the featured architects have configured public areas, meeting rooms, and private work spaces to meet the needs of today's increasingly versatile and mobile workers. The inclusion of an informative introduction, which outlines the economic and technological factors driving the rapid evolution of contemporary workplace architecture, further ensures that this attractive book will be an essential reference for everybody who has a hand in designing offices, and a thought-provoking read for everybody who works in one.

Having spent most of my working career in the computer business, I spent most of my working career in offices where the main concentration of effort was dull, dull, dull. One mindless cubicle after another.

I picked up this book for the first time when it was lying upside down. The back cover shows an office structure in Los Angeles where the cubicles were truly cubicles - well, actually they were rectangulers. They were made of a stack of shipping containers, 8 foot square, by however long. These things are cheap, strong and available everywhere. I've often thought they should be used for buildings. And inside the book you'll find a description of the building that uses them, providing finished offices at a cost of about $40 a foot.

While this building was in Los Angeles, the book features offices from around the world. This is good, because I've often felt that much of the rest of the world was ahead of us in design efforts.

This is a splendid book that I'd recommend to anyone thinking about building new offices. It is a clear presentation of what can be done, and how advanced design does not have to be expensive.

5 out of 5 stars What's Happening in Office Design.......2005-12-03

This beautifully illustrated large book shows what's happening in club/discotheque design. Like a lot of the daab books, it basically has no text. Instead it is a collection of high quality photographs showing the latest trends in club design from around the world. And around the world really means all over the world vrom Brazil to Peru, Japan to New York, all over Europe, behind the old Iron Curtain, Israel and more.

Clubs seem to go through styles. From the original dingy cellers to high style, then back to the celler with the warehouse look of exposed beams and utilities, and more recently to a wide variety of styles that combine nearly any look from living room, to theater, to cave.

Consider this as an idea book for club design. It's what the top designers around the world are doing these days.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligently Presented and Extremely Useful.......2004-07-07

After sourcing out dozens of books on office interior design, I found Julie Rayfield's Guide To Office Interior Design more than helpful. It was a real gift from heaven! I'm totally new to the world of design and about to start a job in sales and management for an international office furniture supplier and designer. I needed some information quickly. And I wanted it in a user-friendly, comprehendible manner. Reading the Gudie to Office Interior Design was like doing a crash-course in interior design without the heavy technical approach you would normally be subjected to.

The book recognises that office design and execution is no simple task. It does what few books do - offers numerous ideas and tools to get the job done perfectly in a step-by-step guide that makes sense. It's a real life saver because using the outlines and project-oriented structure it offers, you can't go wrong. It's like a map that will get you exactly where you want to go without the sweat, drama, and disappointment that you could face if you weren't sure what to do or which direction to take.

If you need a simple, easy to understand and very useful guide to office interior design, you can't get a better book than this. Highly recommended.

Minimalist Spaces is a fascinating journey through minimalist architecture and interiors. This amazing guide features over 30 of the best examples of this architectural style from buildings all over the world, including overviews of such projects as the Na Xamena House, Spain; a Minimalist apartment in the U.K.; the offices of Bang & Olufsen in Denmark; the Antonio Pernas Boutique in Spain; a minimalist jewelry shop in Munich; and much more. Conveniently organized into three chapters-homes; offices and public buildings; and shopping spaces-this guide also includes dozens of sophisticated photos, as well as introductions written by John Pawson and Claudio Silverstrin, two important contemporary leaders of this extraordinary movement.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but no need to buy........2004-04-15

Firstly, I love minimalism. The two quotes at the beginning of this book sum up what is wonderful about minimalism rather nicely, and I encourage you to read them (at the book store). Secondly, some of the exibits in this book are really fantastic, especially the Japanese projects. I found a lot of inspiration looking at these designs, and the photography is mostly great.
BUT, you really don't need to buy this particular book. I suggest Minimalist Houses over this particular collection because it has a lot more variety, and greater international representation (eg. you'll see more from Germany, Sweedan, the U.S. and Japan) for about the same price. Minimalist Spaces is a nice book, but read it the store as an appetizer for Minimalist Houses, if minimalism appeals to you. Some people are uncomfortable with minimalism, and there are plenty of books and designs for you too :).

          4 out of 5 stars Good Selection.......2001-06-12

The materials in Minimalist Spaces are thoughtfully selected from broad range around the world. With its good quality graphics, it's a book worthy to read. If more specific details and graphic illustrations could be included, it would be much more helpful. Anyway, this is a good book of its kind.

            Book Description

A glimpse inside some of the most innovative and exciting offices spaces in the world.

The office is where most adults spend their working lives. From the cut-and-paste chaos of the designer's table, to the accountant's desk as pristine as a decimal point, from the highest boardroom table to the lowliest home office, Industrial Interiors: Offices pulls up the blinds, puts your feet under the desk, and reveals the workplace as it really is. Office design is one of the most rapidly changing and exciting areas of architecture and interior design. This book showcases stunning workspaces from Asia-Pacific, the place for cutting-edge design.

All too often, interior design is conceptual and divorced from reality - it forgets that spaces are designed to be occupied by human beings with ideas and designs of their own. The 'Industrial Interiors' series breaks the mould of the interior design book to reveal a very different perspective. Offices offers a truer insider view of spaces, both public and private, showcasing real-world interior designs.
