Book Description

PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS is the first comprehensive and authoritative collection of classic design objects. This beautifully illustrated three-volume set of books presents 999 industrially manufactured products, carefully selected by a group of experts. It is the first definitive illustrated sourcebook on the evolution of design to include such a wide scope of objects in detail.

From cars to furniture, from tableware to cameras, from everyday objects to airplanes, this breadth of design has never before been collected in such a way before. PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS tells the story of design's evolution around the world from the late 1600's to the present, bringing together patents, prototypes, old advertisements, original drawings, images showing the process of manufacturing, as well as rare archival photographs. The anthology features an astonishing 4,000 images.

The objects are presented chronologically, beginning with an elegant pair of Chinese bonsai scissors from the early 1600s, still in production today, and ending with Barber Osgerby's Lunar bath accessories, destined to become a classic. Glancing through the volumes, the reader will gain an understanding not only of the history of design, but a history of taste and culture. The book is an extraordinary journey through the objects that have shaped our society, from the first attempts to combine function and beauty in the nineteenth century, through the machine aesthetics of the thirties, the advent of plastic and other new materials in the fifties and sixties, up to the classics-to-be of the last ten years.

The book includes not only objects created by internationally renowned designers, such as Breuer, Le Corbusier, Dreyfuss, Eames, Yanagi and Castiglioni, but also anonymously designed pieces, such as the clothes peg, the corkscrew and the chopstick, which, in spite of lacking a specific designer, have achieved such perfection in design and functionality that they have eliminated the possibility of improvement.

PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS is a laboriously selected examination of some of the world's best products ever made, most of which are still in production. The objects truly encapsulate what design is and what it will be for decades to come. It is a key reference tool for the designer or architect, as well as a fascinating and accessible design history for the newcomer.

The collection comes in a specifically commissioned carrying unit exclusively designed by Konstantin Gricic.

4 out of 5 stars Literally Drew Blood!.......2007-10-02

I thought when I ordered the books that all this thrash about the packaging MUST be overblown. But this is, without a doubt the worst packaging I've ever dealt with. Though the plastic case was damaged in shipping it was still a struggle to free the books. When pulled apart (which is what a small sticker on one of the books advises) the plastic shattered. One piece dug into the palm of my hand and gave me a pretty decent gash. Other smaller fragments ended up all over my room. All I could think was thank God I didn't lose an eye! Even then I only succeeded in liberating one book.

The books themselves are very nice, and were only slighty damaged in the ludicrous struggle to liberate them from the case. It's comical that they come in the worst designed packaging you can imagine.

So while I would recommend the books, I also strongly suggest protective eye wear for the unboxing.

Books are great overview of classic designs, but Amazon service is horrible. The carry case is one of the worst designs ever but customers would be lucky to see it. The way Amazon ships the product, the carry case (a flimsy pastic) breaks in shipping. Amazon refuses to ship the carry case alone and states that it is not their problem but that of the manufacturer. They will offer to send a replacement set once (books and carry case), but it will come broken again as they do not ship it differently and you have to set up return shipment of the original package.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book with ironic packaging.......2007-02-10

Superlative book; goes well with the Domus 12 volume set for enough design related material to keep even an avid reader occupied for years to come...

The packaging understandably gets more comment than the books themselves. I suspect it is deliberately ironic - coverage of 999 objects blending form and function, coupled with a piece of something else.

I'm surprised at the complaints regarding the packaging being broken in shipment - I would have appreciated someone saving me the trouble, as mine went straight in the recycling bin. I'd rather liberate my books than imprison them.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for content; 0 stars for shipping.......2007-02-06

Beautiful books and production value, but the plastic carrying case--being especially vulnerable--didn't survive two shipping attempts. On both occasions, the books arrived with their carrying case shattered and the books damaged. You might do better getting these some other way. You'll take your chances if you decide to have them shipped via Amazon (or any other online shipper). Beware.

5 out of 5 stars A rare find: a generous, gorgeous and intelligent design book plump with photos and information, lovingly designed........2007-05-14

Hawai'i: A Sense of Place, by Mary Philpotts McGrath, is a book written with intelligence, immense respect for its subject, and a true artist's eye. I read the entire book--something I don't often do when the photos are so satisfying--and I was very impressed with McGrath's high level of professionalism and gracious, articulate style. Not only is she at the top of her game but she's heads above all others. McGrath is an artist who `paints' with the landscape, furniture and elements at hand: she integrates the environmental and architectural influences with her clients needs. The photos illustrate the copy perfectly so you can actually learn something while enjoying this book! Another thing she has done is juxtapose charming sepia colored photos of buildings and furniture from Hawai'i in the 1930s 40s and 50s with appropriate full color photos of homes she's been commissioned to redesign. You can compare the old influence on the new. She has elevated what was once considered `kitsch' with an inspired respect for the deeper meaning and grace of Island style. She enhances everything she touches with a gentle knowing hand and it's gorgeous! The book is masterfully designed and plump with tons of photographs. Anyone interested in the beauty of the Islands and how to integrate that love into your home need look no further than Hawai'i: A Sense of Place. It's a useful jewel of a book no matter where you live.

4 out of 5 stars Hawaii a Sense of Place: Island Interior Design.......2007-04-03

This is a slick coffee table type book with lots of great pictures. And, as a coffee table book it works really well. It shows many really nice homes, rooms and grounds in Hawaii. In general, though, it's not as much a survey of Island Interior design as it is a showcase for the work of Designer Mary Philpotts McGrath and the artists and artisans she has worked with. All of these homes appear to be owned by the very rich, who have the means to have a professional designer work with them and near unlimited budget. That said, my wife and I were able to get a lot of design ideas from the details of the scenes presented and were able to get a sense for this designer's vision of Hawaiian decorating.

4 out of 5 stars Great pics for decorating Hawaii-style.......2007-03-17

I read about this book in Sunset magazine. I love Lanais. I want one at my house! It has so many photos of traditional Hawaiian decor and great info about the lifestyle. It's a great coffee table book because of its size and photo content.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabuous Idea Book.......2007-02-24

This book is a treasure trove of design ideas. Perfect for the Aloha decorator. The book is of high quality and the pictures are very professional.

5 out of 5 stars Hawaii A Sense Of Place.......2006-12-30

This is a wonderful book! The photos are beautiful & the paper of a very high quality. Although the places photographed are clearly places that cost millions of dollars, I found lots of wonderful, simple ideas that I could afford. And for once I read all of the commentary included!

    Book Description

In addition to being a basic item of furniture to be found in any home, the chair reflects social and aesthetic changes throughout history, provides an ideal medium through which to experiment with new materials or technologies, and challenges the creativity of designers devising new ways to defy gravity's immutable laws to provide support for the human body.Through vivid photography and commentary, Just Chairs describes all facets of chairs, classic designs that have withstood the test of time to revolutionary and modern creations from young designers transforming the chair into an object of art.

After a brief introductory history of the chair, this visual history features chairs designed from the world's most famous designers including Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Eileen Gray, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Arne Jacobsen, Harry Bertoia, Verner Panton, Eero Aarnio, Ettore Sottsass, Vico Magistretti, Oscar Tusquets, and others.

A complete and inspirational look at the too-often-overlooked machine that is the chair, the book is a charming and inspirational resource not only for interior designers but also for all those wishing to find the perfect chair for their lifestyle.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great showcase of chairs........2006-11-18

Bernie is totally right in his description of this book, and I find it great! The first half of it is devoted to pieces from XX century and the rest to ones from century XXI. The vast majority of them are production models but there is a closing chapter about the chair as a piece of art. As a designer I find all of them very inspiring.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing selection of chairs.......2006-07-06

I suppose it all depends on what you expect this book to be. I was expecting a history of chairs, with 600 pictures of the chairs. What the book consists of is pictures of 600 mostly modern chairs, essentially all factory made, and almost all made from metal and plastic.
If you're looking for pictures of chairs through time and how they developed over the centuries, look elsewhere.
    Extremely disappointing book.

    Book Description

The occupation of space is a trend that can currently be recognized in many creative fields. While furniture and product design were once largely driven by classical industrial and interior design, these disciplines are now also being shaped by the visual culture of graphic design and high-tech production processes. These new influences are contributing to the creation of furniture and interiors that go beyond anything previously designed or imagined.

Furnish presents domestic territories that expand upon our current understanding of interior design. The book documents recent work by designers, artists and architects that shows how they are using furniture in pioneering ways: as environment, as art object, as digital-organic growth, as mutation or as insertion. These cutting-edge examples are a sure indicator of the trends that will be influencing interiors as well as hotel, restaurant and club design for the next several years.

Furnish also explores the new hybrid nature of occupied spaces, where the domestic enters the realm of fine art and where objects from pimped heirlooms to rapid prototypes find their homes. The book also presents surprising interdisciplinary work, for example, the results of architects engineering tables, graphic designers creating soft furniture and industrial designers making concept art.

The experimental spaces that are shown in Furnish are not only interesting for interior designers, but also contain innovative examples of interdisciplinary design work that are relevant and inspiring for anyone working creatively.

      Book Description

New Scandinavian Design is an ambitious survey of the creativity and innovation of one of the most energetic design cultures around today. Not to be outshone by the classic furniture that made "Scandinavian design" a catchphrase of the 1950s, today's generation of designers is updating modernism in fresh and unexpected ways. Tweaking the myth of fair-haired citizens producing sober beech furniture, New Scandinavian Design goes "beyond blond" to feature work that is anarchic, conceptual, and playful, while still exhibiting hallmark qualities of honesty and utility. Profiles of each Nordic country and illuminating interviews explore the trends and top products. Well over 400 full-color photographs of contemporary furniture, housewares, textiles, and consumer electronics make this an authoritative overview. Expertly researched and inventively designed, this substantial volume is as commanding and attractive as its subject.

      Book Description

Gord Peteran, an artist living in Toronto, has been designing site-specific works of public art and furniture for the past 25 years. His innovative work has been shown in many exhibitions in the U.S. and Canada. Peteran describes woodworking and metalworking as his "paints and brushes. They possess the appropriate physical resistance and wield the kind of sensual, visual impact that allow my investigations to become real." Gord Peteran: Furniture Meets its Maker catalogs the first large exhibit of his work, traveling from Milwaukee to four other museums in the U.S. and Canada.

Distributed for the Milwaukee Art Museum.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars See the Exhibit, Buy the Book.......2007-01-07

Gord Peteran is a fine craftsman with an even finer sense of visual playfulness. Furniture is not usually smile-producing, but the premier exhibit of his works, Furniture Meets Its Maker, does just that. Massive doors become canvasses and wood scraps from the workshop floor become tables. Peteran terms his work "furnitural" - a nod to the sculptural element in what he does.

The book is a wonderful thing. The long foldout pages allow the viewer to enjoy the details of his craft and the text reflects the artist's obvious capriciousness. The paper is of a fine quality and adds to the pleasure of this volume.

See the works in person while you can, and get the book to continue the enjoyment.

      Book Description

Reporting on the myriad ways that contemporary furniture artists are exploring cutting-edge digital technology, this study investigates the modern collaborative process between furniture makers and their clients. Insightful interviews with 100 of the field's leading artists are presented, along with information on the changing approaches today's craftsmen take when designing and making fine furniture. This report also focuses on how modern furniture artists balance the investigation of new technologies and art movements while remaining true to their traditions.

2 out of 5 stars Not to be judged by its cover..........2005-10-14

I really looked forward to this book. Even ordered it before it was released. But, now that I've received it, I'm more then a bit disappointed.

The problem is this: The title of the book, the cover and the well done introduction all are focused on how furniture makers are utilizing digital technologies in their work. It got me interested. Seems reasonable to expect the content to be there, too. The problem is, once you're past the cover and the intro the book is just another book showing off examples of several contemporary furniture makers' work.

The work shown, with only one or two exceptions and a contributed essay has absolutely nothing to do with digital technologies in furniture making, whether in the design phase or construction process and most important if you believe the title as I did, how these new tools are opening up new creative paths.

Other than these very thin contributions, it's just another studio furniture book. That's really too bad, as there are craftsman out there that are really using digital tools to both design and actually create interesting new furniture. There's a lot of ways this could have been handled in a book, both in techniques or design or exploring the philosophical questions of digital vs. traditional.

If that's what you want to see in this book as I did, it just isn't here.... Too bad.
