Customer Reviews:
Very Practical and Useful.......2007-06-19
Everything about this book is organized - including the way Marcia Ramsfield presents her systematic method of simplifying all the major compartments of life. She presents practical ideas that are immediately usable and are designed to have life at home and at work running smoothly with as little maintenance as possible.
First, this book is definitely geared toward women, whether working or homemakers. It also includes a short devotional and prayer at the end of each chapter for those who are interested in incorporating it.
I liked the way Ramsfield suggests targeting one facet of life's stressors at a time and really focuses on helping the reader get control over it before moving to the next. She begins with mealtimes and moves through clothes & laundry, cleaning, and projects. She then focuses on special areas, including work life and holidays.
I felt her chapter on holiday organization was especially helpful, and her chapter on cleaning was a bit weak. I didn't feel better equipped to develop my own cleaning schedule based on that chapter. I feel the rest of the book does compensate for that weak point.
This book focuses more on simplification of the stressful facets of life rather than direct organizational techniques. It is about developing good habits, but does incorporate some practical suggestions for your tangible organization needs. For an excellent resource of the nitty-gritty organizational specifics, I highly recommend "Confessions of an Organized Homemaker" by Deniece Schofield.
Organize Your Life.......2007-04-04
Get organized and stay that way after checking out all the tips in this book. The simple ideas are very easy to put into practice.
Great book...very helpful!.......2007-03-09
This book is just what my family needed to get our lives organized!!
Very Easy to Follow.......2007-02-13
This is one of the easiest books I've read on Organization. It has guides at the end of each chapter for you to follow. I would most definetly recommend it to anyone who struggles with getting things organized.
Best Book to get Organized.......2007-01-20
I truly think this is the best book about getting organized. Simple ideas that are easy to execute. It really helped me alot.

Book Description
Organizing as a spiritual art?
Yes. After all, being organized is a spiritual process. Chaos is conquered as much by awareness, gratitude, grounding, and breath as by a well-labeled filing system. Simplicity and order are valid -- even crucial -- choices. And they are found within.
Organizing can also be creative and fun. Peppered with poetry, snippets of song lyrics, inspirational quotes, and wisdom from the ages, The Spiritual Art of Being Organized is a unique and enjoyable book on organizing. While most organizing authors tell you how to organize your kitchen or your files, Claire teaches you the 12 Basic Principles -- practical and spiritual -- that embody every organizing tip you've ever heard. By learning the "why" instead of just the "how," you can easily organize anything, anytime, anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
The Spiritual Art of Being Organized.......2007-07-17
The Spiritual Art of Being Organized examines the problems and underlying psychological issues surrounding office and home clutter. The author suggests that often we put off putting items away in their rightful place thinking that we simply don't have time. We think, I will get to it later, right now the dog needs water, supper needs to be made, or I'm late for work. However, the author points out that one stray bill or one dirty cup quickly evolves into more and more clutter. Soon, even the mere thought of cleaning up this massive mess is too overwhelming and potentially time consuming to even consider dealing with the resulting clutter. With this book, the author aims to illustrate how to create and apply practical, useful storage systems while making use of realistic clean as you go methods that reduce impending clutter while not adding significant time to already busy schedules. The author also guides the reader through the cleaning and organizing of current clutter in short rational blocks of time to reduce the overwhelming nature of this task.
The Spiritual Art of Being Organized is a great organizing resource that teaches the reader to think about clutter in a different way. We often think about cleaning as time consuming. However, with proper forethought and planning, cleaning can actually make our lives easier and give us more time for other activities. This book will be useful to even the most chronic disorganized chaotic individual.
A lovely book.......2007-06-08
that along with two others, Choosing Simplicity and How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free, I reread yearly for perspective and motivation. The Spiritual Art of Being Organized by Claire Josefine is the one that is read first. Without organization, it is pretty hard to simplify or to be happy, wild and free. With the author's gentle guidance, you will find her 12 organizational steps, i.e., Think!, K.I.S.S., Create and Use, Habits and Schedules, Be Realistic, etc., will help you to create the best system for you. Each of the author's 12 basic principles has its own chapter which explains the reasoning for the step, ways of integrating it into your lifestyle, and a question/answer conclusion providing additional clarifications as to how it works. Appropriate quotes from others are included at the beginning, and sometimes within, each chapter. You can pick and choose the principles that are best for you at the moment in time when you are reading the book, or you can choose to take advantage of all 12 at the same time. The 12 principles are followed by a chapter on clearing clutter, something those of us with organizational skills that are not as finely tuned as we wish they were can definitely use to our advantage.
This little book will help you to enjoy a simpler, better-organized life. Recommended.
Much more than a material guide..........2006-03-06
This book was very helpful to me because rather than addressing merely the do's and don'ts of household organizing, it deals with the underlying attitudes that cause chaos in the first place. Have you ever seen the supposedly humourous placard hung in a disaster of a home, declaring that "A clean house is the sign of a sick mind?" Claire Josefine's book shows how the opposite is true, without making any such judgments about the psychology of slobs, of course. She only points out that if we are not fearful of letting go, or afraid of having it all together and getting on with our lives, we can eliminate clutter and disabling excuses based on confusion. A tidy home, or desk, or time schedule, is actually the sign of a healthy mind.
Claire's book doesn't dwell exclusively on these spiritual or psychological factors, however; she also gives us the tools to pare down, simplify, order, and prioritize effectively. The book is about half of each: self-help attitudinal assistance, and hands-on training for practical application.
All in all, an extremely helpful book. It would make a lovely gift for somebody who seems overwhelmed by the logistics of life. And the beautiful cover makes the volume itself welcome on any coffee table--part of your newly appealing decor!
For anyone who feels overwhelmed with life's chaos .......2005-05-07
In The Spiritual Art Of Being Organized, Claire Josefine reveals that having and living a successfully organized life necessitates a foundation of spiritual underpinnings. Josefine emphasizes the necessity for a conscious approach to organizing our daily lives with an emphasis on living simply. Of special note are the "12 Basic Principles of Organizing". Offering a text laced with humor, poetry, quotes, and non-judgemental advice to understanding our clutter, The Spiritual Art Of Being Organized is welcome and highly recommended reading for anyone who feels overwhelmed with life's chaos and persistent disorder despite all of their previous attempts at trying to set up organizing systems without first modifying their own beliefs and behaviors in order to use those applied systems to clean up and clean out the debrie of their lives. Easy, accessible, inspired and inspiring reading!
Good going, Josefine.......2005-01-17
I don't usually go in for the self-help sort of stuff, but I found this book really easy to pick up and enjoy. It is written in a conversational tone without being too chatty or technical. (This is important for me, as I am easily bored and/or distracted...) Fun quotes and flowing style keep an otherwise mind-numbing topic interesting! Thanks, Claire Josefine!

Still cluttered.......2007-02-15
Eh, so, so. It didn't show me anything I hadn't seen before, and I still have a lot of disorganization. Not inspiring or original or problem solving.
Definitely a keeper!.......2007-01-18
I picked up this book at Publix on a whim while food shopping. I'm really glad that I got it. Sandra has an easy writing style that I appreciate and is easy to understand. I haven't finished the book, but I feel by incorporating her methods and psychology of Messies Anonymous, my bedroom and other common areas can be clean and organized easier and sooner. Thank you Sandra! ~Lil' Black Panther~
Recommend this book for a true Messie.......2006-09-01
This book does help with you discover the root of the problem. Following an 'blue print' from a non-messie does not change the way I think & process information about my world. I find Sandra Felton's books come from the point of view of a former messie & I can relate to her better than someone who has always been organized. If you are a messie, this is a good book to read.
Updated Messies Superguide .......2006-08-08
Yes this is the updated version of the Messies Superguide. And I'm so grateful. My Superguide was so well used, it was losing pages! Here and there, there is updated info.
Basics:
Each chapter ends with short questions for you to answer. These are questions to get you to the core of your problems as a messie. Once you know your weaknesses, you can fix them. In later chapters the questions get you to analyse, create strategies, and attack the problem....much like Morganstern's book, Organizing from the Inside Out.
Only this book was written first and explains WHY we do what we do.
This book is wonderful in explaining why some of us are messy, are packrats, are hoarders, are depressed, are afraid to have people over to our homes. And what makes this book so life changing is the fact that it isn't just Sandra's life(which it is) it is also Sandra's RESEARCH! She talks about research on how the brain works and why some of us are messy.
This was really helpful to me. It is one thing to hear, I'm a messy, your a messy we are ok. Lets try to figure out how to help ourselves. It is quite another to hear, research says this is why you are a messy. With this knowledge you can get to the core of your problem.
Another point that sets this book apart from others is Sandra is not a cleanie (This is a person who is naturally able to clean and organize). The benefit to her being "one of us" is that we are much less likely to feel put off or insulted. Then we are able to make progress.
While a previous reviewer is correct in stating there are no direct tips and hints on organizing your home, I believe that is one of it's strongest points. Many a cleanie has written books telling you how to arrange your house. How many of each item you should possess.
The problem, you don't fix yourself! You don't deal with the core problem so the house falls apart again and you go purchase the next book by a cleanie.
They make money and you add another book to your clutter. sigh.
With this book I have made great strides in decluttering and organizing and I have not slid back into the clutter of things everywhere.
If you are a messy, you gotta have this book!
Worth reading if you're messy.......2006-03-13
When I moved into my first apartment I was faced with a terrible dilema. My mother had always kept our house in good shape, that is of course for myself and my sister's room who were in a continual state of disarray. Therefore I learned to enjoy a clean house without actually learning to do it myself. I was miserable in my own apartment! Thankfully for Christmas my mom got me Living Organized as well as Smart Organizing and The New Messies Manual by Sandra Felton. Living Organized is great for pointing out habits that need to be replaced that lead to disorganization, especially for those of us who are easily distracted, and Smart Organizing is more about what to do once you're aware of your behavior. I haven't made it to the third one yet, but am saving it for if I slip back into my old ways. It must be working because when my sister came to visit last night she said "wow, your place is so clean and organized."

Customer Reviews:
Martha Stewart on steroids x2.......2007-08-27
I bought this book because I have an average sized home without very much storage space and wanted to maximize my space. What a waste! I don't know where these authors live, but clearly it is not on the same planet as me! For example, one of their brillant suggestions is to install a refridgerater in your laundry area for drinks and snacks so you won't need to leave your ironing to go to the kitchen and thus interupt your ironing. a) in today's world of wash-and-wear, who sits down and does a weeks worth of ironing? b) if I had room for a fridge in my laundry area, I wouldn't have bought this book! They also suggest keeping a household journal for various things such as noting where you stored your spring candles when you put them away to make room for you winter candles. You can also note which brands worked best, and which scents you prefer. Also, when you are at social engagements and friends happen to mention their food allergies and/or preferences, you can write them down on a little slip of paper and later transcribe into your journal to reference when you give dinner parties. Who are these people??? Don't buy a copy of this book--you can find mine for free in the trash heap.
Buyer Beware!.......2007-08-21
The book has pretty pictures, so why not hire author Randall Koll, who is not a certified interior designer? It may turn out to be a very costly mistake. We hired Randall in the fall of 2006 to organize and furnish our home. In January 2007, Randall was given a check for thousands of dollars to buy furniture. It is now August 2007 and our home is still not organized and we still do not have new furniture. Randall has not returned any calls or e-mails since May. So save your money and learn from our expensive mistake.
Stylish and practical.......2006-06-30
I have two young children, a packrat mate, a home-based business, and a newly purchased, super tiny apartment. Need I say how easy it would be to drown in a sea of clutter?
Koll and Ellis' book is full of beautiful photographs and simple suggestions for taming the stuff in your life while leaving room to celebrate it. I've read too many magazine articles and websites that make the reader feel guilty or inept, this is a book that understands that organization isn't tyranny but emancipation. I also love how many of their concepts are budget-friendly.
Although many of the photos in the book feature spaces far more expansive than my own, the ideas the authors present for everything from storage solutions to good housekeeping habits are easy to implement. If I had room for a coffee table, this would be a lovely addition to it.
great book!.......2006-03-22
i have been working on the "clutter" in my home, and this book had good ideas and helpful pictures to go with them. i am on a tight budget, but was able to take ideas and mostly just use things i already have, just adding some baskets and bins here and there. i recommend it!
Beautiful and functional storage solutions...A must for Every Household.......2005-06-29
Like the other reviewers, I love this book! If you love your stuff, want to keep it, but need great ideas on how to "contain the clutter" and beautifully display your rooms, this book is for you. Each chapter contains several ideas for organizing the different areas of the home. It covers many decorating styles and tastes. It's all about functional yet beautiful furnishings that work for your lifestyle. I can't say enough--buy the book and you will see what I mean.
