Book Description
For potters, mold making is invaluable because it allows them to slip-cast identical multiples of their work—and this newly revised, now in color edition of Andrew Martin’s classic is the definitive guide to the craft. No other volume has shown the processes in such how-to detail. It’s overflowing with hundreds of photos, key techniques, projects, master artist profiles, and troubleshooting tips. A thorough introduction addresses materials and tools, and presents Martin’s simple, unique template method for making clay prototypes. Create easy one-piece molds to make tiles, bowls, and platters, or multi-piece molds for more complex forms. An extensive overview covers slip formulation, while offering highly desired slip recipes for low-, mid-, and high-fire clay bodies. This will be the standard reference in every ceramist’s library.

The Essential Guide to Mold Making & Slip Casting (A Lark Ceramics Book)
I did not expect such a hard book to follow. This book is not for green beginners. Terminology not explained and I found the photos unreconizable.
Perfect Upgrade.......2007-09-14
Andrew partnered with Lark Books to completely redo the original version of this book. They made a great team and this updated book should be in the library of every serious ceramicist. All the copies at the Kansas City Art Institute are well-worn and we are proud that Andrew is a graduate of the KCAI Ceramics Department.
Best ceramic mold making book around!.......2007-05-07
I have read all the ceramic mold making books over the last 10 years. This book by Andrew Martin was, by far, the best I've read. Good explanations, plenty of pictures on how-to's. I first saw Andrew at NCECA doing demos with his molds. I really liked what was coming out of them. If you want to further your ceramic experiences with molds, this is the book to get.
Worth the wait.......2007-03-10
Finally, a mold making and casting book, as usual, the photos are well done, there is a great deal more information than I expected and the instructions are clear. Lots of inspirational examples of other artists work. This was well worth the wait.

This book has some of everything in it. If you are interested in exploring methods beyond basic buttercream this is your book! Well written for the average beginner to cake decorating it gives you step by step instructions for so many decorating techniques. A great book for anyone attempting a new technique. You will learn enough to know whether or not you want to persue the technique further.

Not for the Buttercream at Heart.......2005-01-26
This would be an essential guide if you work with fondant, mold gumpaste flowers, or model paste figures. There are step-by-step photos about how to make a wide variety of flowers, how to use basic tips for piping, how to model a variety of animals and people, and how to marbelize fondant. There are some gorgeous fondant designs--my favorites are the stacked pastel square packages, a castle, a teddy bear picnic, and a white-on-white Christmas cake. There are also some wedding cake designs that are quite different from anything you'd find in a Wilton yearbook.
This guide also offers a great section on elegant gateaux, from custard meringue to tiramisu, cappuccino truffle, and pears with a spun toffee halo, all with beautiful pictures. It also includes basic cake recipes, as well as decorating tips with pastillage, run-outs or colorflow, and a variety of other techniques.
There are a number of recipes and designs to inspire a baker or any decorator with a flair for fondant. If you'd rather pipe your icing and use molded chocolate accents, it's not an essential guide to cake decorating for you . . . just nice to look through the pictures.

If you only buy one book on upholstering, Make It This One.......2007-06-22
I took an upholstery class a few years ago and this book is by far the best in taking you through the steps of how to properly upholster furniture! If you only buy one book on upholstering, make it this one. I am now buying another copy of this book for a relative who'll be doing her own re-upholstering.
The Essential Guide to Upholstery.......2001-01-25
I received this book yesterday and cannot put it down. The pictures, drawings and advice are fantastic. I am very interested in upholstery projects for my home and am ready to move from a "beginning Intermediate" level to "Intermediate". This book is just what I needed for more guidance. I have an extensive collection of upholstery books, and except for "Simply Upholstery" and the "Singer Upholstery Basics" books, I have been mostly disappointed with the books I have received as they were not helpful or showed unrealistic projects. This book is like being in an upholstery class with a smart, interesting teacher. I hope Dorothy Gates writes more books on this subject. I would certainly buy it!!

Customer Reviews:
This is by far the best book I have in my collection!.......2003-07-29
It is full of all the information needed to be a top-notch bakery chef. The techniques given in this book have proven to be very key. In addition, there are excellent recipes provided. I highly recommend this book!
A MUST!!.......2002-08-21
This is a must for anyone that is starting out in cake decorating and needs any inspiration or ideas. Once someone has the basic knowledge of decorating, anything in the book can be accomplished or adapted to something applicable. The full color photos and explanations are great, although it takes a bit of getting use to in the English/British "vernaculur" that it is written. It once again proves that the English have taken cake decorating to an art form and us Yanks really need to step up to the plate.
Exquisite and brimming with originality!.......2002-04-23
I got this book today on a whim, and flipping through it made me want to run out and whip up a cake just to see if I could create a fraction of the magic these cakes possess. I loved going through the vibrant color photographs and admiring the interesting designs (although I have to admit some of these seem much too complicated to be attempted by someone who isn't a professional pastry chef). However, that doesn't detract from the fact that the book is beautiful and informative, and even if I never get one cake to look the same as it does in the book, I won't regret a thing. This guide is a feast for the eyes as well as the imagination! (The sugar flowers alone took my breath away!)

Customer Reviews:
okay, but not great.......2002-12-17
I really liked the projects in this book, but that is because I have seen the results in so many other books and magazines. For example, in every decorating book there seems to be a project on how to create decorative screens. Furthermore, although they are nice projects, it may take an expert craftsman and seamstress to do them, if the intructions in the book are followed. Also, for a book that is suppose to be a general one on decorating, very few styles are represented. On the plus side, the author does cover the basics and the photos are decent.
Recommendation:
Mr. Lee has other books on decoration, so if you like those you might like this one. However, for everyone else, there are other books that are more "essential" for your collection than this one.

This uniquely practical guide will help guarantee that the home you build, buy, or renovate will perfectly suit your needs, desires, and lifestyle.

Great Book - Don't Plan Your Home Without It........2005-06-20
This book is an excellent guide to help navigate the hundreds of practical details involved in planning a home.
Every chapter is well-written, and well- organized, with an extremely useful checklist at the end. For example, what about the selection of your vanity in the bathroom? Would you like it to be the age old standard height of 34"? Or would you prefer it to be shorter, or higher? This is a very useful question as the standard height of 34" for the bathroom vanity is not really a comfortable height for most people. My counters, both kitchen and bathrooms, are a height of 37# (I'm 5'5)which is a more comfortable height for me. The depth of my counters are 28" not the standard 24". If you notice your kitchen, once you have the toaster, blender, etc. out, there's little room left for much of anything else. So those extra 4 " in depth really give you a lot more space. Builders want everything to be standard because it's easier for them, but it's your house they are building, and better to get it the way you want it. Another useful question is "do you read in the bathtub"? I do, and that means when designing the bathroom I want a good reading light above the tub at the end where my head lays. Every chapter in this book ends with a great checklist of things you will want to take into account, and prepares you for the highly detailed process of planning a home. It's one of the best on the market, and I think one of most underated ones.
Mostly lists - a workbook.......2004-01-31
Most of the book is literally pages filled with questions about what you want in a home, with blank space to write in your answers. There are a few suggestions that all somehow end up pointing at similar designs. The filled out book would be given to an architect to start a design. Very good for someone who needs a formal structure to decide what is needed. If you've already throught seriously about what you want, this book will waste your time.
Excellent reference for home buyers!.......1999-09-26
We found The Home Design Handbook to be an excellent resource as we searched for our home. The questions and exercises helped us narrow down and prioritize what we wanted (and did not want) in our home. Even the information intended for those who plan to build or renovate a house, covered issues that we found important considerations for anyone buying an existing home. For example, we learned alot about what to watch for to ensure the house was more energy efficient, inside and out. We felt we were better educated buyers with this great book!
thinks of everything - very personalized!.......1999-08-10
This book looks at home design from a wholistic approach as well as up close and personal. It focuses on your hopes and dreams and the soul of your home to give you true satisfaction with your design. It includes such things as site, energy considerations, family's lifestyle, outdoors and indoors, and budget. With the guidance of this book you can plan to build a house from scratch or remodel an existing house to your taste and needs. Each room in the house is taken into consideration in detail, right down to the storage space, with photos and floor plans. Useful addresses and an extensive bibliography are given for your further exploration. This book is fantastic, especially because it gives you the freedom to custom design your dream house. Much of it is in the form of a workbook, with blanks to fill in. After going through all the forms, it will become clear to you what you need to do to achieve your goals.

Although only one of the four chapters in The Art of Framing focuses on the actual craft of decorating frames, serious crafters and anyone interested in the use of framable objects in home decor should consider investing in this deluxe volume. More than 250 color photos document the history and art of framing, wonderful ways to create effective displays of framed items in the home, and how to decorate frames and mats with specialized treatments (faux finishes, gilding, craquelure, veneers) and decorative effects (stenciling, combing, painted motifs). The section on framing objects and ephemera offers unique ideas that crafters can adapt to show off their other creations.

Great Book.......2005-05-05
This book has a glossary of cake decorating terms. It has pictures of a variety of tools used in cake decorating. There are recipes for not only basic cakes, but all types of icing used in cake decorating. The cake recipes are in chart form so you can make anywhere from a 6 inch cake on up to larger cakes. This book also has instructions on preparing cake boards and cake assembly. It's a great book to have as a resource. There are also lots of nice pictures.

great overall explanation of the subject!.......2004-08-16
I am just entering the world of cake decorating and this happened to be the 1st book I skimmed/read! It is wonderful. I was looking for details and that is what I got! Merehurst Ltd even gives a brief history on the subject- which was very interesting! There are lots of different cakes you can make yourself and also detailed pictures and explanations! I just borrowed this book from the library, so I have to return it...but I'll definately be buying it. I think it's a must-have for cake decorators everywhere!

Customer Reviews:
Too much general information.......2000-06-21
I wasn't sure what audience author was trying to target as I read this book. The author tries to simplify too much information that takes entire college courses to understand such as space planning and color. This book is too complicated and dry for the home owner wishing to find information about decorating and is too basic for an interior designer.
Average customer rating:
- It's all in the details
- Great Photos, needed more accompanying text
- In harmony with seasons changes...

It's all in the details.......2002-04-27
Seasonal Home teaches the reader to bring the outside in season by season. I agree with a previous reviewer about the lack of hows and whys, but the images certainly make up for it. A great part of the Essential Style Guides series. A+
Great Photos, needed more accompanying text.......2002-04-12
For quick "visual" ideas, this book offers creative ideas for the home. With its "seasonal" format, it takes you through the four seasons with imaginative ideas for each phase of the year. What was lacking, in my personal and professional opinion, was detailed accompanying text to describe the how's, and how-to's, of the photos shown.
In harmony with seasons changes..........2001-03-09
"Seasonal Home" is beautiful book and really inspired me to make some changes at home. It's full of easy ideas and may help you prepare your home for the so different energies of each season...
The book is perfect and it's seductive, as Nature and its elements... It shows that with some simple changes you can make your house more confortable while the year goes by...
Nice text, beautiful photos and a very beautiful edition too.
Nature's Decorative Style.......1999-09-25
"Seasonal Home" is inspirating and seductive as Nature and its elements. Great ideas for your house and for your life. Beautiful photos and a very estimulating text. Very nice edition too.
Hooray for simplicity!.......1999-05-18
"The Seasonal Home" by Kristin Perers is a refreshing approach to creating an environment in a home that is strictly confined to the God-given natural gifts that everyone receives whether rich or poor. Leaves, shells, plants wood products, or cast-off furniture seem to come together to enhance the rooms with a simplicity that is quite moving. I say hooray for the publishing of this lovely little book with such reverence for the basics without frills. Young people whether married or single will love it.
