I read it and can't remember if I decided to keep it on my shelf. I guess that's never good. The examples read like a reader's digest soap opera and are painfully generic, and painful to read! Other than that, I read it a week ago and already forgot if it was helpful. I think it had basic advice that was helpful for couples, as I recall, but the writing style was painful.

5 out of 5 stars Passion Trap.......2007-07-13

This is a fantastic read. The way it explains and describes the human dynamics of a toxic or failing relationship makes complete sense. It also normalizes a lot of behaviour within these types of relationships which help the reader gain understanding, clarity and insight into their own thoughts and actions. By gaining this understanding it also helps encourage you, if nothing has before, to make firm decisions one way or another for yourself that will be best for you.

5 out of 5 stars I would give this book TEN stars if I could!.......2006-12-07

As a Relationship Coach, I suggest that all my clients purchase this book and keep reading it over and over until it truly sinks in. Whether you are happily married, in a troubled relationship, or single looking for a mate, reading this book is a MUST! I agree with another customer's review that you can throw away the rest of the relationship books in your library and keep this one close at hand. The Passion Trap is the genesis, IMO, where all relationships start failing. Other books (and I've read many) on relationships may hone in on this or that issue and offer advice for remedies, but this book starts at the bedrock level of troubled relationships.

It is almost spooky how this dynamic works in all relationships. One of the partners is always more invested than the other which keeps the relationship out of balance . . . one wanting more, one wanting to run.

Read The Passion Trap, and begin to recognize how this dynamic is working in your relationship . . . before it's too late. :)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book.......2006-03-13

In my library, I have about 400 books on psychology of relationships. I didn't expect this book to add much more to what I already had, or knew. Was I wrong!

This book is the best analysis of the self-defeating dynamics that destroy love relationships -- and delivered in such an accessible, well-written mannner that one cannot put it down. I stayed up two nights in a row reading it until 4 a.m., and wished I didn't have to go to sleep at all.

How I wish I came across this book a long time ago. As earlier reviewers stated, this should be required reading in high school (though this book is for all ages) -- it would save people so much heart-ache, depression, and divorces, if they understood ahead of time what undermines relationships between love partners.

The book is at its best when it descibes power imbalances that occur between people; it gets a little weaker later on when the authour tries to categorize people by giving them labels (e,g, "Loner", "Punisher", etc.) Real life can be a little more complicated than that (i.e., some people combine many characteristics, and are too complex to fit in just one category). But that didn't diminish my total admiration for this book.

I may get rid of some of my other books in the future to make room for new ones, but the Passion Trap will stay with me forever. I will be sharing it with my grandchildren if I have any...

5 out of 5 stars Read This Before It's Too Late.......2005-02-22

A year ago this book could have helped avoid the breakup we just experienced. It might not have avoided the split, but at least we both would have exerted all efforts to try to understand the issues and reach a mutual decision rather than have it all fall on one to make the decision.

The book is brilliant. I could not put it down. The cases were effective in linking theory with life and it was almost too easy to identify with the roles. Throw away the so-called self-help books that promise reconciliation and read this book at the first sign of relationship troubles. Regardless of the outcome, you both will find a great sense of peace and resolve for having applied the techniques Dr. Dellis decribes.

Book Description

This book is about innate motivation--the naturally endowed needs, drives or desires that motivate a person to some particular action or behavior. Many terms are used to describe this phenomenon. Giftedness, talents, motivated abilities, natural strengths, motivational patterns or passion and purpose are some of the most common. Regardless of the specific term used, all are intended to convey the fact that every time a person accomplishes something personally significant and enjoyable, he or she will inevitably repeat some or all of the aspects of his or her innate motivation. Over time, a consistent pattern emerges that, if recognized and understood, reveals the basis for fulfillment and productivity for that individual. This book presents the System of Identifying Motivated Abilities, (SIMA), a behavior-based assessment process designed to identify this unique but consistent pattern of your natural strengths.

The outcome of this SIMA Assessment is a description of your vocationally sighnificant motivations--what you enjoy doing and feel you did well.

It describes:

- the "motivated" abilities that recur in your work/life achievements

- the subject matter or content with which you are motivated to work

the circumstances that trigger and sustain yur efforts

the way in which you prefer to relate to others when you are working

- the overall outcome or payoff that you seek to achieve from your efforts.

This set of information, which is your Motivational Pattern, should be the foundation of every decision you make about your job, your career and even your life. After you have identified your Motivational Pattern, you may elect to have your pattern compared to profiles of more than 400 professions and occupations to determine the "best fit" for you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable book...Invaluable assessment tool.......2005-09-14

I have spent many years as a psychologist counseling clients who lack a sense of fulfillment and meaning in their lives. I therefore read this book, and underwent the SIMA process, with great interest. I found that it was the most accurate, powerful, and comprehensive instrument that I have encountered to understand one's motivated abilities. I highly recommed this book to anyone serious about reaching their potential doing work that they enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It finally all makes sense..........2005-04-14

Amazing insight contrary to most popular opinion. The exercise is an investment in time that pays off hundreds of fold. Better yet, the author is more than willing to take the exercise to the next level to really bring it all to life. One of the best investments I've made in years - in time and dollars!

5 out of 5 stars What Will You Be When You Grow Up?.......2004-05-04

Are you having a hard time deciding what you want to be when you grow up? Are you 43 and still wondering? Or maybe you're 53 and considering your second career. For those of us who have ever had such thoughts, Marlys Hanson's "Passion and Purpose" is the solution.

In this excellent work you will learn about Motivated Abilities, and why you should work to your strengths more than always trying to improve your weaknesses. You will understand why you are particularly good at some activities, and perhaps a bit less so at others.

After you have read the book, help with understanding your Motivated Abilities is available from Marlys' company, Marlys Hanson and Associates. While the book teaches the method of doing this analysis oneself, the experience of Marlys and her team will help you learn even more about yourself for a modest additional cost.

I wish I had found Marlys sooner, but am thrilled that I found her at all.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful Resource, Highly Recommended.......2004-03-26

I read Arthur Miller's books and thought them to be excellent. His view of "giftedness" and design really made sense to me looking at my personal history.

As much as I enjoyed Miller's books, I needed something practical to accompany it. I found "Passion and Purpose" to be just that. It gave me a superb framework to map out the necessary data and analyse it. One result: understanding my motivation payoff, a major "ah-ha" for me, and something I doubt I would have come to on my own.

The section pertaining to analysis I found to be particularly helpful. It assisted me to be both throrough and quick. Several subseqent sections that help work through a "Best-Fit" scenario and team design I also found extremely useful.

I would say that "Passion and Purpose" is a wonderful companion to Miller's books and/or as a stand alone work on giftedness. It believe it will really help you to identify and maximize your natural design, motivations and abilities, and ultimatley lead to a more impactful and fulfilling work life.

This is the kind of craft that amazes people - they have no idea how easy it is to do because it looks so great. This is my second purchase of her books and if you join her yahoo group you find she comments regularly with even more tips. The tools used are reasonable in price and I don't think this craft is going to go away this time - no more 60's drawings - this embroidery goes fast and the themes are timeless. 5 out of 5 stars Beautiful clothes that are fun to knit!.......2007-03-28

I am about halfway through knitting one of the short-sleeved sweaters, and I can't wait to finish it and wear it! I'm an intermediate knitter, and this is my first real project with cables. Even though I'm using a different kind of yarn, it's been easy to pick up and follow the pattern. I've been amazed at how beautiful this sweater is coming out! I'm certainly learning some new cabling patterns and techniques as well. Most of the patterns in this book use more than one type of cable and they are all unique. Each one has big color photos of the finished product so you can see what they'll look like. The clothes look beautiful, and I've already picked out which pattern I'm going to try next. You won't find any of these clothes being mass-produced and sold in the stores. I'm looking forward to wearing this unique top that I made to fit me, and showing it off. :)

"Confidence with pattern can be gained with experience," says the introduction to this gorgeous book, "but as very few people have the time these days to try out endless different combinations, I have tried here to gather together a host of decoration ideas based around the five main categories of pattern found in the home." Professional decorators seem able to combine patterns effortlessly, but for the rest of us it can be fairly intimidating. How do you choose from among a riot of color and design and not have your home end up looking like it was decorated by some demented thrift shop owner? Stylist Katrin Cargill tells us precisely how we can do it, in information-packed text and hundreds of great photos. Each of the book's five sections is devoted to one of her five pattern categories--texture, stripes, checks, motifs, and pictorial. We can easily put what we've learned into practice by trying out some of the 10 carefully explained step-by-step projects, including painting stripes or checks on walls, making bordered curtains, stenciling a floor, and covering a wall with fabric. --Amy Handy

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures.......2005-06-23

The photos in the book are absolutely stunning! This book was released a few years ago but you couldn't tell...it looks like it was done this year.
There are mainly europien castles, cottages, etc. featured and only a couple of modern homes. But I agree with the previous reviewers on that this book is truly inspirational and has great examples of combining patterns, textures, etc. together in an anusual way. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 star is because the text could have been more informative, I felt that in some cases, the author was just stating the obvious. I find the text only somewhat helpful. Otherwise it's a very well done book! I also use it as a coffe table book and draw ideas, inspiration from it.

4 out of 5 stars A pattern for inpspiring home decor.......2001-12-13

This is a gorgeous book filled with lots of inspiring ideas for your home and some projects that emulate the look of designs in the book. I keep this on my coffee table and flip through it when I need some advice about combining different patterns and textures. There are some schemes here I would never have imagined working together, but seeing them on the pages of this beautiful book gives me the courage to be bolder with color and pattern.

5 out of 5 stars A Passion For This Book!.......1999-12-03

I am an interior design professional and we have a copy of this book in our office. It is full of fun, vibrant, whimsical and creative ideas. It is another wonderful book from Katrin Cargil.

4 out of 5 stars Good for English knitters.......2005-08-16

I am a beginning knitter and was looking for a good how to book with clear illustrations. This book is great if you knit in the english manner. I knit continental which this book does not address. I gave it to a friend who knits english and she loves it so that is why I gave it four stars. It was however no use to me. I wish this author would do this book for continental knitters.

    3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2004-10-19

I liked this book fairly well. It had several patterns in it that I enjoyed using. However, the only patterns in it that I could use to knit for the men in my family were in the charity knit section--one hat, one scarf. I was really disappointed on that point.

2 out of 5 stars Too much print, not enough knitting.......2003-02-06

For avid readers, rather than avid knitters, this book could be a hit. There is plenty of information about websites, yarn manufacturers, and knitting in general. As an avid knitter who has a vast collection of knitting books, the patterns don't tempt me to go to my yarn stash.

3 out of 5 stars a good book for a beginner, but assumes intermediate skills.......2003-01-26

There is a lot of info on yarns in this book which is good for someone who cannot go to a yarn store to see and touch the yarns there. The illustrations are clear for beginners to learn how to knit and there is a great section on making your first sweater. There is also a good section on finishing, however, this section could have used more illustrations for beginners to learn finishing techniques. The patterns in this book are nice and even contemporary: pair of socks, cardigans, rolled-neck and cable pullovers, scarfs, hat with tassel, luxury shawl, and throws, but would not wow anyone looking for more fashionable items.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners!.......2003-01-17

My serch for an introduction to knitting book has ended!! A Passion for Knitting had everything I was looking for in a knitting book. Detailed information on yarns and tools, step by step instructions with photos teaching the basics of this art form, instructions for reading knitting patterns (with a listing of common knitting terms and their abbreviations), and a variety of projects aimed at the beginning knitter. The above is only the first half of the book! The second half is dedicated to exploring the world of knitting, it's trends and traditions.

    Book Description

This volume outlines and illustrates the importance of considering social contexts of food consumption in interpretations of past and present human societies, giving a new twist to the old adage 'You are what you eat'. What we eat, how we eat, are and always have been fundamental to the structuring of social life, both in the past and in the present. The remains of food are also among the most common archaeological finds. The papers in this volume explore and develop ways of using food to write social history; they move beyond taphonomic and economic properties of 'subsistence resources' to examine the social background and cultural contexts of food preparation and consumption. Contributions break new ground in method and interpretation in case studies spanning the Palaeolithic to the Present, and from the Amazon to the Arctic. This volume will thus be essential reading for all archaeologists, anthropologists and social historians interested in the prehistory and history of food consumption.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting information among the technical details.......2001-01-08

This book contains papers presented at a Nostratic Symposium in Cambridge England during July of 1998 at The MacDonald Institute for Archeological Research. The focus of the symposium was, "The Nostratic Macrofamily and Linguistic Paleontology", Aharon Dolgopolsky, 1998. Dolgopolsky's book attempts to deduce the location of the Nostratic speakers' homeland, their cultural characteristics and their epoch (e.g. Neolithic vs. Mesolithic vs. Paleolithic) from the reconstructed Nostratic vocabulary.

This review is based on an early edition of the book that was obtained second hand. I believe this edition was produced for use at this conference.

These papers provide criticism of and commentary on Dolgoposky's book, as well as discussing some criticisms and defenses of the Nostratic Hypothesis. The first section of the book consists of two chapters, one by Renfrew and one by Dolgopolsky, introducing Nostratic in around 50 pages. This is followed by seven chapters on "The Composition and Reconstruction of Nostratic" (130 pages), five chapters on "Methodological Considerations" (110 pages) and six chapters on "Perspectives from the Daughter Families" (115 pages), with a concluding chapter written by Daniel Nettle, titled "Towards A Future History of Macrofamily Research" (15 pages). There is no index.

Colin Renfrew's introduction (about 16 pages) provides a fine short exposition of the Nostratic hypothesis. Dolgopolsky then introduces the phonology, grammar and grammatical typology. Following this he discusses the derivation of Nostratic words and the place of the Hamito-Semitic family and concludes with replies to some criticisms of his methodology.

The various papers in "The Composition and Reconstruction of Nostratic" discuss in some detail the linguistics aspects of Dolgoplsky's book, and offer numerous criticisms and alternatives. I found R. L Trask's comments on the correspondences in Basque (A sideways glance at Basque) interesting and his somewhat skeptical conclusion well written.

In addition to linguistics, the papers in "Methodological Considerations" address the methodology of linguistic paleontology, both generally and as applied by Dolgopolsky. The early part of Lyle Campbell's "Nostratic and Linguistic Paleontology in Methodological Perspective" is particularly interesting to non-specialists.

The papers in "Perspectives from the Daughter Families" provide commentary and criticism from authors "who have expertise in a particular language family" and hence are primarily concerned with the individual language families. Of particular interest to non-specialists is Alan Kaye's paper "The Current State of Nostratic Linguistics"

The concluding paper titled "Towards A Future History of Macrofamily Research" is a call for a new methodology for the problems that he considers to be common to the methodology of Nostratic as well as that of several other macro-families, such as Altaic, Nilo-Saharan, etc. He considers these various hypothesized macrofamilies to be at the same impasse, "stuck at the same log jam" " He then analyses the cause and suggests alternative methodology.

There were interesting sections interspersed among the word lists and etymologies in many of the individual papers. However, the papers that I, as a non specialist found most interesting, were the introductory and concluding papers as well the ones in the body of the book I identified above.

In short, the casual reader may find much of the technical detail heavy going, although there are interesting areas throughout for those who want to obtain an idea of the current state of Nostratic research. Specialists will want both this book and the "The Nostratic Macrofamily and Linguistic Paleontology" book. Anyone who is interested enough in the Nostratic Hypothesis to buy this book should seriously consider buying the Dolgopolsky book as well.

4 out of 5 stars Great for people who want to dye their own yarns.......2001-01-31

I wanted to rate this 4 and 1/2 stars. This book is worth buying for the dye instructions alone. The patterns are also very nice, although they are rather theatrical (think Russian dance) and would look better on taller people.

She has many motifs that would work well for afghans or knitted bedspreads or smaller projects such as hats or scarves.

If you already dye yarn with drink mix, this book could inspire you onward and upward.
