This book gives a fascinating exposition of the theories of James Hillman and provides a metaphysic of life that everyone can benefit from. Life experiences of several people are given to illustrate his points. Hillman gives in ordinary language what Crowley spent thousands of words explaining.

After reading Moore's "Care of the Soul," I decided to move on to his teacher, James Hillman. And I am glad I did.

This book gave me pause to conduct my own personal "archetypal autobiography," an exercise that has utterly transformed my life. Hillman's insights into the forces that move and motivate us have helped me as a man, as a father, and as a scholar.

I had my own copy bound in leather and I refer to it periodically -- when trends and events in my my life require archetypal realignment, when my soul needs grooming, and when I need the kind of perspective that shows me how I can gracefully my past into my present, and thence to the future.

It is a subtle and sophisticated set of arguments, not for the feint of mind.

The Inappropriateness of Myths for Adults.......2006-04-30

Hillman is a provocative author with many keen insights, but not unlike many psychologists in the Jungian tradition, he cannot refrain from the use of Myths. I deliberately capitalized the word Myth, because it more often than not is the problem, not the resource to resolution. Don't misunderstand me! Myths have figured heavily in all civilizations for their power to "see" something that is often otherwise not apparent. Moreover, myths are the backbone of civilizing humanity, telling stories, usually morality tales, that provide an insight that more direct discourse and narrative cannot capture. These Myths have a limited use, primarily for children, whose immaginations are charged by the peculiarity of the story, and through that peculiarity perceive a "truth" about life. Aesop's fables are perhaps paradigmatic, but other Myths exist too.

But as we enter the 21st C., isn't it time to limit the use of Myths for their pedagogical uses with children, and strip our adult minds of those Myths that have taken hold and twisted our sense of things. The most notable Myth in Western Civilization has been the Bible. The ironic twist about these particular Myths is that they are no longer pedagogical, but have become polemical. And I am far from confident that most of those Myths are innocent or benign. They no longer tell a story or morality tale, but in many people have become the Standard by which to measure all of life. And because the Myth transforms into religion, it often takes hold of people as though the stories are literally true, rather than metaphorically provocative. Instead of understanding a God of love and compassion, one encounters Yahweh whose jealousy and wrath are staples. And instead of perceiving "God" as the Energy that pervades the universe, its conception is of an anthropromorphic Deity, who caps things off by becoming human.

The point of all this is that Myths that go beyond mere stories and are transformed into "reality," often cause more damage than good. This is true both for the individual who maps out the world not as it is, but how a nomadic tribe millennia ago saw things. New tribes have arisen, but they tell the same unintelligible Myths. People even go to war over these Myths.

Thus, Hillman's use of the "acorn" is nowhere near that kind of Myth, but it perpetuates the Myth that only metaphors and stories can explain ourselves. So one Myth is substituted for another, denying all coherence to ourselves and others. That's what Myths do. And so we delude ourselves into thinking that only another Myth can overcome previous ones. At some point, we have to stop the endless progression of Myths and grab onto reality and face it head on. Myths not only do not do that, they prevent that from happening by their very nature.

Hillman's use of Myth is meant to be a "tool," but like many a tool it often becomes part of some larger apparatus like the person who uses it. Saint Paul said when he became an adult he put away childish things. And I suggest that using one Myth to see ourselves out of another Myth still keeps us in Myths. We persist in using childish tools, when only adult ones ultimately work. What was originally only a vehicle for insight inheres to our being and becomes the prism through which we view life. Hillman's "acorn" Myth is definitely useful, but as adults it's time to put away childish tools and start confronting life as adults. Instead of trying to "see" ourselves as we are, and for who we are, we hoist a new Myth to take on for changing our perception. We "see" the world through "Jungian" glasses, for example, rather than through the ones we should have formed.

At its most challenging reward, introspection and self-analysis require we face ourselves as we are, stripped of all the stories we have adopted as "our life." Only then can we find what we are searching for, and then begin to make sense of it.

Missing the point.......2005-08-19

I chose not to finish the book, because I lost track what the message was supposed to be. I don't understand why authors decide to fill hundreds of pages and the quintessence is missing, instead of keeping it lean and to the point. Less can be more, but maybe the conclusion was revealed after I stopped reading......

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The Code of the Woosters, by the inimitable P. G. Wodehouse, is a fun and enjoyable romp with Bertie Wooster and his Man Jeeves. This novel features numerous plotlines, including but not limited to, the battle over a cow creamer, a lost notebook, romantic entanglements, the theft of a policeman's helmet, a potential jail sentence for Bertie, a dictator, and more romantic entanglements. Each plotline is brought to a conclusion by the brilliance of "Plum" the excellent English humorist. The book is full of hilarious one liners and brilliant wit. Amazingly, this novel was first published in 1938, yet it is still full of timely situations.

This novel of classic comedy introduces us to Totleigh Towers and its owner, Sir Watkin Bassett. Several memorable mainstay characters are in this book including Gussie Fink-Nottle, Aunt Dahlia, Madeline Bassett, and Stiffy Bing. Any journey taken with Wooster and Jeeves is time well spent. This classic series endures because the characters are wonderful and memorable. A 5 star fun-filled romp.

What's a cow creamer anyway?.......2007-04-09

The Code of the Woosters opens with Bertram Wooster's favourite aunt arriving unannounced with a request that Bertie go visit an antique dealer and cast aspersions on a silver cow creamer as a ruse to bring the price down for Bertie's uncle, a fanatical cow creamer collector.

Unfortunately a rival collector buys it before Bertie can get into his act and to make matters worse it is a judge with whom our hero has had a run in. We follow the further meetings and doings of Bertie Wooster through a mirthful chain of people and merry events which tangles itself about poor Bertie linking him to that blasted cow creamer like a prisoner to his iron ball, until finally Bertie's valet Jeeves as usual frees him from the whole mess and rids him of all worries.

But what the deuce is a cow creamer anyway? It is a vessel, part of a dessert and coffee service, used to serve cream and shaped in the form of a cow. Of course that's what it had to be, and I would have figured it out on my own too. After all anyone will tell you that grand old chap Vincent is no stranger to the more rarified items of trivia and that he can trivialize with the best of them. There's always something working in the old bean as they say. In any case, I'd have been able to figure out the purpose of this object, from the name alone in fact, had I for a minute imagined it possible that such a silly thing could have existed in the first place.

That the book follows P.G. Wodehouse's classic Jeeves & Wooster formula doesn't make it less entertaining, nor does it eliminate all surprises. Great fun.

Trivia: The Code of the Woosters is set in the late 1930s, just before WWII and Wodehouse satirizes Hitler in much the same way Charlie Chaplin did in is film "The Great Dictator".

This book is a good introduction to the Jeeves and Wooster series. The story is stupefyingly complex, the dialogue hilarious, and the characters unforgettable. Really get involved in reading Wodehouse's body of work and you will find "Woosterisms" creeping into your vocabulary: you will be referring to chums as "old bean" and greeting people with a merry "What ho!"

Wooster and Jeeves ride again........2006-10-01

As with any novel about Jeeves and Wooster, I don't want to give too much away. Much of the humor is not just in the language but in how surprisingly complex things can get before they are resolved. So my first suggestion is to skip the introduction by Alexander Cockburn who quotes some of the funnier scenes in the book.
Now as for the story it involves a cow-creamer, a small leather book, two marriages, a want-to-be Dictator and a police helmet.
The Code of the Woosters has 222 pages of some of the best dry British humor ever to come from P.G. Wodehouse's pen. As always the dialogue between Bertie Wooster and his man Jeeves is some of the greatest you will ever encounter in your whole life. How one book can contain so much is beyond me but this is, as any of his books are, a must for any library.

The cast of characters includes his two daughters -- "Stiffy," who has secretly decided to marry "Stinky" Pinker, the curate -- and Madalyne, engaged to Gussie Spink-Nottle, a shy bachelor entralled by the sexual habits of Newts, who is hounded by the baleful and muscle-bound Rodrick Spode. Gussie fights intimidation by compiling a list of uncomplimentary observations into a small leather book, which becomes an object of blackmail when Stiffy tries to get Bertie to steal a policemen's helmet . . . well, never mind. You get the idea. The hilarious volume is one of Wodehouse's best -- combining deft plotting and dialogue to return you to the Edwardian England, where your choice of dinner jacket was more important than your choice of politics. The book is awesome! I noticed a very bitter review written above and was so shocked I decided to write my own! (First let me state I do not know Hartman and I am not writing this review because of any connection to him! I am writing this because this book is amazing and I hope everyone looking into this book reads it! So to the bitter person who wrote the review above I say this; What is the cause of your obvious bitter disdain for Dr. Hartman?)

Dr Hartman's identifications of the base personality types is right on target! He very accurately identifies the root motivations and needs of the 4 different personality types helping the reader immediately gain a deeper understanding of human behavior. I love this book so much I have given away 2 copies and have boughten his second book, "Color Your Future." (Another extremely insightful book!) I promise if you get this book you will not regret it!

insightful and uncomplicated.......2003-03-21

Dr Hartmans approach to understanding and working with others, by understanding their personality, is one of the most insightful and uncomplicated pieces of liturature available. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist intern and have had experience with a number of other personality profile measures/profiles available on the market. Many other sources are too complicated and lengthy for many people. Hartmans is set up in a way that most people will be able to understand and work with. For these reasons, I would recommend his work to most anyone.

This book is pure drivel based on one mans "visions" that he supposedly received after getting into a serious accident. There is no scientific basis for his work. Nothing in this book is an original concept. Quite a few of his "ideas" can be found in several books previous to Dr. Hartmans book being published. I do not reccommend this book on any level. I also have it on good authority that the wonderful reiews that this book has received on this web page come from friends and associates of Dr. Hartman, at his request. I would be interested to know what others think of this book that do not know Dr. Hartman

This book answers a lot of questions........2000-12-12

You should really read this book if you have been unhappy with your "lot" in life or are just plain unhappy with yourself. It answers a lot of questions and is like taking a look in the mirror. It may seem simplistic to break down the human personality into four color groups, but if you read through the book and spend some time on the tables, you will find your core personality. Then things will become much more clear. One whole chapter is spent on valuing oneself and its relevance to your whole being and to self-actualization. Dr. Hartman describes how doing what you love to do is part of valuing yourself. It asks that you not give up what you love, which is exactly what I had been doing. I found the book to be easy to follow and very logical and sensible. I've read through it once, but am going to keep it on hand to keep reminding me that there is hope.

The Devil's Code is the second Kidd book I've read by John Sandford after reading the Hanged Man's Song. There are only four in this series of a part time artist/part time computer hacker, and I've read the last two. The Devil's Code is a fun book, where the differences in Sandford mainstay Lucas Davenport and artist Kidd are more fleshed out. Kidd is a funny guy who enjoys his life and his relationship with LuEllen. LuEllen is a thief who likes golf and cocaine and can help Kidd out with the dirty work that he isn't quite used too.

In the Devil's Code, a fellow hacker is killed and his sister comes to Kidd for help. Kidd begins to look into it and finds out that the hacker, named Standford, was researching AmMeth. Meanwhile, the US government is after a group of terrorist hackers named Firewall. The members of firewall include Kidd. There's only one problem, Kidd is on the list of terrorists and Kidd knows that isn't true. Someone must be setting him up.

In Davenport novels, Sandford spends a fair amout of time with the villian, giving the readers all the gory details of his methods. In the Devil's Code, St. John Corbeil is the villain and we get to meet him be he isn't given the center stage in this novel. There are a lot of twists and turns as Kidd and LuEllen run around the country trying to discover what's going on and also not leave any tracks for the authorities. There isn't much cat and mouse like in the Davenport novels, but there is a sense of fun, even when things get violent.

I'll move on to the first two books in the series, which by now are seriously outdated. And I hope there may be another Kidd novel in the series coming soon.

I am a good fan of John Sandford. I liked this book by him as well. He keeps you interested. There are no slow starts as he gets right to the action. I do prefer his Prey series but these others didn't dissapoint me.

It started when I was housitting at my buddy's condo and the power went out during the superbowl. WTF? I had nothing to do and all I could find was one flashlight. On his coffee table I saw a copy of Devil's Code and once I picked it up I could not put it down. This book is far from what you think it is, but everything that you hope it will be! I would compare it most to watching a really good Russel Crowe or Brude Willis movie, but with powerful and exciting thoughts and situations instead of explosions! Forget all those other "code" book out there. Now this book REALLY changed the way I think about what goes on in government. Something tells me that they're not telling us everying that is going on. You'll never look at life the same again. Now I'm usually a slow reader, but the amount of action that takes place in this book is increadible. To think about the fact that a guy could jump out of an air plane and his parachute could not work and he could still live is increadible.

Quit with 40 pages to go.......2006-05-24

I got to page 320 or so and didn't care enough to finish it. I still don't know what happened. For me the wall was an inane discourse on art having nothing to do with story in the run up to the climax. I think i've been reading too many classics lately. I just can't stomach this writing any more.

One of my favorite books of all time, this book follows Bertie Wooster, dim-witted aristocrat and employer of the omniscient valet Jeeves, as he tries to evade the sappy Madeline Bassett (who thinks Bertie loves her), her father Sir Watkyn Bassett (who thinks Bertie's a thief), and their family friend Spode (who wants to beat Bertie up). The plot thickens when both Bertie's Aunt Dahlia and his friend Stiffy Bing try to persuade him to steal Sir Watkyn's prized silver cow-creamer. Will Bertie end up in jail, or will Jeeves be able to save him? This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Absolutely not to be missed.

An early critic of P.G. Wodehouse complained that his second book was identical to his first, only the character names had changed. In response, Wodehouse resolved to continue writing identical stories, but to keep his character names the same. And so, The Code of the Woosters is nearly identical to all other Jeeves and Wooster novels; Bertie gets into a sticky situation, inadvertently makes things worse, and is ultimately rescued by Jeeves. Could any one of them possibly be any good if they are all so unoriginal? Yes. In fact, they are all excellent. How? Wodehouse was a genius; reading any one of his books will prove it to you. The narration itself (the story is told by Bertie) is positively hilarious. And so, I give The Code of the Woosters the highest marks I can!

After every two sentences or so, I had to put this book down and howl like a hyena. This was my first Bertie and Jeeves book and I think it's a comic masterpiece. In Code of the Woosters, the plot spins faster and faster until the immensely satisfying end, where everyone gets what he or she deserves.

Wodehouse's comedy has no mean side to it - his writing remains engaging without resorting to the snideness that many humor writers employ. I still can't figure out how Wodehouse keeps my attention and keeps me laughing when his general theme is the unwavering silliness of the English twit. I'm heading to the bookstore for more.

This Novel is Enjoyable, but Unbelievable.......2007-09-29

I read a lot of thrillers, and I really enjoyed THE GENESIS CODE for the most part. This novel resembles the DA VINCI CODE in the sense that it's a religious thriller, and the villains and assassins are far-right Catholics. THE GENESIS CODE, however, ultimately goes in a very different direction than Dan Brown's book, and can be enjoyed on its own merits.

The major flaw with THE GENESIS CODE is that the big "secret" of the book is pretty predictable. I therefore found the finale of this book, where the secret is finally revealed, to be kind of anti-climactic.

I also found the main character of Lassiter to be kind of silly. For example, you're supposed to believe this 35-year old is the CEO of the top private investigatory firm in the world, and is a better investigator than the cops and the FBI. Despite this fact, he often discovers key clues by mistake: in one scene, for example, he accidentally knocks some materials off a refrigerator door, which reveals a postcard with an important piece of information. You also have to believe that Lassiter would stick an incredibly important piece of evidence in his pocket and completely forget about it until the very end of the book. Say what? Whenever I read unbelievable scenes like this, I feel like my intelligence is being insulted by the authors.

Still, despite its unbelievability, THE GENESIS CODE is much better written than your average thriller and succeeds very well as an entertaining page-turner. John Case is actually a pseudonym for a husband-wife team, and the wife died earlier this year at a tragically young age. Unfortunately, this probably means that we won't be getting any more Case thrillers in the future, which is a real shame for fans of good thriller fiction.

I just finished reading this book for the second time. 'The Genesis Code' kept me in suspense from the very first page. Being an "action junkie", John Case does an excellent job in giving me my fix. Even if you are not a avid reader, 'The Genesis Code' is a read that will keep you up until the last page.

Never having read a john case book before i wasnt sure what to expect...but from page one on this book is a perfect threller.. Combinig scince , religion, great characters, lively writing....you wont want to put the book donw...Funny thios book wad wriiten in the pate 1990s and maybe the plot seemed farfetched at the time but with new breakthroughs in science it is defitnely p[lausible ....and very scary....

a thrill ride.......2007-06-16

This thriller begins in a sleepy Italian village, with the village priest. He is musing over the fact that he constantly hears the same types of sins being confessed in the confessional when a local scientist/doctor comes in for confession. The reader does not know the confession, but we see the reaction: the priest flees the church and goes immediately to one of his connections in the Vatican. Whatever the sin confessed was, it has world-shaking consequences.

This book brings in an ultra-conservative Catholic lay order (their motto could have been "Hey! the Inquisition wasn't all bad!"), a conspiracy to murder whole families and a professional American investigator named Joe Lassiter.

The action is fast-paced and the story is well-written. The author, to his great credit, does not let you know what all the hubbub is about until the characters themselves discover it. In fact, about halfway through the book, you start to wonder if the good guys really are the good guys.

The ending wraps things up a little too well, but it is a very good book. Grade: "A"

I devoured it in about 4 hours, and when I finished I felt like "My God, what am I going to read now?" And I have a corner of my living room with 5 stacks up beyond my waist to read, but nothing "appealed" to me after reading this...it's like I needed another "adrenalin fix" and none of my books looked like they contained one!

TRUST ME, BUY a COPY, and READ IT, then read these reviews!!!
