Book Description
With Stone and Designing a Home with Wood, Heather and Earl G. Adams brought us inspirational style guides to using two of the fundamental materials in home design. Now this creative team has turned their attention to tile in all its beauty and utility. Once merely ceramic, today's tile encompasses glass, stone, and cork, among other materials, and Tile Style celebrates tile old and new with 250 color photographs of gorgeous completed rooms as well as step-by-step installation demonstrations.
This comprehensive guide shows how tile can be used in myriad applications-from floors to ceilings and bathrooms to kitchens-as well as in multidimensional tile designs and mosaics. Tile Style is also filled with practical information on choosing, purchasing, installing, and caring for tile. The book is divided into four sections, covering natural and man-made tile materials, decorative uses for tiles and mosaics with instructions for special artistic projects, and a complete guide to installing tile. Projects include laying a stone tile floor and installing a granite tile countertop with a glass and metal backsplash. An extensive appendix section provides home decorators with all they need to know about budgeting a job, hiring an installer or doing it themselves, and maintaining surface tiles.

Beautiful Tile.......2007-05-12
This is a great book about tile. It has creative, inexpensive ways to upgrade your tile look and to help enhance your end result. There are beautiful pictures of tile work someone would actually install into their own home. Highly recommend this book for the person who is looking for creative ideas.
Ideas, Ideas, & More Ideas.......2007-02-15
This book has some wonderful examples of tile projects to inspire you to do your own. After I read the book I did my own project and it turned out well. The book is packed full of useful information to help anyone complete their own project.
Pure tile eye candy!.......2006-06-22
This book is chock full of gorgeous tile applications in a variety of styles. I especially love the mosaics. Pure eye candy!
One of the BEST!.......2006-02-08
I have always been an avid DIY'er and a passionate lover of tile, so I have just about every book on the subject. I've been waiting for the release this newest book TILE STYLE and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Truly an all inclusive book, it covers in great detail everything tile including natural stone, glass, metal, mosaics, terra cotta, brick, porcelain, ceramic, cork and numerous decorative tiles. Not only will you learn the qualities of each, but how to chose, design with, install and care for them as well. The book is filled with beautiful photos of tiled rooms (even the installation sections are full color). And when it comes to the installation sections, this has to be one of the most detailed, yet simply presented of my entire collection. Plus, the projects incorporate the newest setting methods and materials in conjunction with the most current trends in kitchens, baths and flooring such as a granite tile countertop, a glass and metal backsplash and setting a travertine tile floor! Beautiful, extremely informative and cutting edge - a must have tile book!

Customer Reviews:
This book should be free.......2007-02-27
It is my own fault for not reading the entire description of this book, but it is not what I first thought it was. This book simply has different layouts for stock cabinets your could buy (for example at Home Depot). I should think that manufacturers of these cabinets could give you a book like this for free to help you decide layouts. So, you have a book of hundreds of different arrangements of cabinets, and you'll probably find 1 or 2 that you actually like or need. It does seem to leave a lot of the figuring, ie measuring to fit, to you. If not free, this book should be like $9. I gave 3 stars because if you want lots of ideas on how to arrange cabinets for all areas of the house, this book serves its purpose. However, if I really rated its value to me, I'd say 1 star, maybe half. Can I return this??
Almost meaningless.......2007-02-14
This book seemed meaningless to me. As others have noted, it is basically a very long sequence of rather poor line drawings and very little else. Very few low quality pictures are included; that is a pity because they could help provide some inspiration or guide your design. And fairly little know-how information is provided for do-it-yourself folks - the author recommends using professional installers. For most people, cabinet manufacturer websites and/or a visit to your local Home Depot or Lowe's kitchen design center will be much more useful than this book.
Expected more photographs and instructions.......2006-11-05
This book contains almost no photographs of finished projects. There are hardly any diagrams of the intermediate steps, and the instructions are minimalistic at best. This book assumes a reasonable knowledge of cabinet installation techniques; however, persons who possess such skills would largely find this book unnecessary. What you do get in this book is lots of line drawings of how to stack and arrange cabinets in different configurations, but these drawings are much like the ones you can get through the design services that are provided by Lowe's, Home Depot, and other major home supply stores.
A better choice would be "Built-In Furniture: A Gallery of Design Ideas".
Wonderful ideas!.......2005-11-29
500 pages of cabinet designes in line drawing format! If you get one idea from this book it is worth the price, and believe me, there are many ideas you can use. I have been designing cabinets for a year now and this book has added to my ability to generate good designs for my clients.
Do not confuse illustrations with photographs........2005-10-21
The only color photograph is on the cover. This is a big book with 500 pages, hundreds of drawings depicting many layouts and a clear list of cabinets needed along with additional materials required to complete each layout. Each of the twelve chapters focuses on a specific area such as bedrooms, baths, beverage centers, entertainment centers and utility areas. The author offers many design variations for each area.
The strength of this book is the huge variety of designs shown for each project area. The author illustrates many clever ways to use stock cabinets to create a variety of custom looks. The weakness for me is the lack of any color photographs to help visualize the results in a finished projects. This is a great resource of concepts for professional designers or decorators who have the imagination to know how drawings translate to finished results.
Book Description
For beauty and practicality, nothing can equal the popular kitchen garden, with its combination of ornamental and edible plants.
Book Description
Do you have an ugly duckling kitchen? If so, take this book and learn how to transform it into the pretty and practical swan it was meant to be. Whether your kitchen is galley-shaped, U-shaped, L-shaped, or just plain small, this hands-on workbook offers ideas for kitchens that suit every lifestyle, from city singles to growing families.
The kitchen is the heart of every home: the place where we gather with our families and friends; where we prepare and share food; where we work, entertain, and eat. But many kitchens were not designed with all these functions in mind. As a result, they are too small, too dark, and too cramped -- when what we want is spacious, light, and comfortable.
With
Small Spaces Beautiful Kitchens, you can change all that. In its pages, youÂ'll learn how to turn your kitchen -- no matter how small, how drab, how dysfunctional -- into the kitchen of your dreams.

Helpful advice and ideas.......2007-07-17
This book might be useful to more people than its title implies. The emphasis is on efficiency and small kitchens, but some of the kitchens in the book are not so small. Most of the advice will be helpful to anyone who is considering a kitchen renovation, regardless of the size of the room. Of course, a large kitchen gives one the option to create unused space that a small kitchen does not, so the book is especially helpful for people with space-limited kitchens. I use that term rather than "small" because the dimensions of my kitchen are largeish, but the layout of doors (all necessary) limits the cabinets and countertops in the room. I'm looking for creative ways to think about reconfiguring the space, and this book has been very helpful in terms of encouraging me to think about where to store things (items used less often can be outside the main kitchen space, for instance), what I typically do in the kitchen vs. sometimes do or rarely do, and how to plan a cohesive design style that works functionally and makes the kitchen a pleasant place for the cook. For example, I've been using wire shelving units as a temporary solution to my kitchen's lack of counters and storage space, but I wouldn't have considered this as a permanent design option before reading this book. That wouldn't be everyone's preference, but this book provides examples of several design styles to suit a variety of tastes. Other kitchen books provide more advice about the nitty-gritty of kitchen functions such as including enough electrical outlets, materials choices, etc. For that sort of information, I recommend "This Old House: Kitchens" (an oldie but still the best). To help you think about what you want and need in your kitchen in terms of function and visual appeal, especially if every inch counts or if the kitchen is part of another room, this book is a good investment.
small spaces, beautiful kitchens.......2007-05-12
I am pleased with this book. It has a lot of ideas for the kitchen that I would have never thought of. If you are undecided and can't figure out just what you want this is a good book. I'm very pleased.
Lovely design, useful tips.......2005-06-11
If you like contemporary, modern, eclectic, and retro styles, this book is great to look at. If not, borrow it from the library just for the text. I have made more practical moderations to my original ideas from this book than any of the dozens of other books and magazines that I own.
For instance, I originally was set on installing a microwave/range hood combination over our stove. This book points out that having a microwave in this position is inconvenient, even dangerous since it is very high up and over an area that is frequently hot. Also, it is difficult for children to reach. Instead, a built-in microwave shelf in a different location makes more sense. The suggestion may not be as space-saving as my original plan, but made sense nonetheless. This coming from a family of four with an 11'x 8' kitchen.
The photos presented an assortment of styles, sizes, and cost-ranges although it leaned more toward high-end, contemporary, and larger than my kitchen.
I would have liked to see more photos with large key ingredients like refrigerators. I would have preferred to see more floor plans and actual room dimensions. Unfortunately, I have not seen a book yet that was strong in this area. I think that any decorating book that has the word `small' on it's cover should strive to include those details.

How not to write a bathroom book.......2007-09-17
This book is worth reviewing only because it's so sadly typical of many bathroom remodeling books currently on the market. Written in a breathy, ecstatic, inspirational style more appropriate to the spiritual uplift than the home remodeling literature, it's short on information, sources and resources and materials or manufacturing credits. The taste level of the lavish photo spreads varies from the sublime to the ridiculous; but in either case, even if you saw something you thought you might want to use in these pages and wanted to put a name to it, track down sources and prices ranges and assess its pluses or minuses for the particular installation you had in mind, you'd be totally out of luck. For example, if the picture you're interested in appears in the countertops chapter, don't expect Ms. Kohn to make life easy for you and identify the wall or floor materials in the same picture, including the elements that might originally have caught your eye.
This book reiterates the usual design and materials platitudes ("Balance is the key to beauty as well as budget!"; and: "A discarded Warning sign can take on new meaning and become a work of art..") providing unnecessary and maddeningly useless filler for both the pretty and the not so pretty photographs.
I've read a lot of bathroom design books in the course of planning my next bathroom makeover. They run the gamut from bad to outstanding, and Ms. Kohn's is certainly not the worst; but it's so highly typical of the genre that I think it's worth both the time and trouble it's taken to write this, admittedly, jaundiced review, in hopes that future publishers might take note and current consumers proceed with caution.
Not bad...But not inspiring.......2005-01-05
Well, this would be a great book for my mom or grandmother, but as a young homeowner I am a bit dissapointed in the dated styles. Generally good advice and lay-out, but not inspiring. In fact there is on bathroom in there that I seriously have nightmares about!!!! I havent finished reading through yet, but so far it hasnt gotten any better.
Great design resource.......2004-10-21
This book gave me plenty of great ideas for remodelling one of our bathrooms. I liked the up-to-date, grown-up and upscale designs that cover a range of different styles from modern to classic and from country to metropolitan. The design advice was very logically laid out and made a lot of sense. There wasn't just superficial blabber regarding "beauty" etc. but a lot of good, practical, in-depth pointers as to how to get a project started and completed. I haven't come across a better book than this for this subject!

Kitchens for dummies.......2000-03-29
I was decieved with this book. First with the text. It describes the obvious. Second, with the pictures. Too much style in questionable taste. The book is not beautiful enough to become a coffee table book and is not practical enough to serve as a reference book. The photos look antiseptic, lifeless and are not very attractive. Altough the intention to make "the house livable" is mentioned in the book, the result proves that to have good intentions is not enough. The kitchen's projects are interesting though. But although they say that "little things mean a lot" I missed a lot of little things in this book. I would not recomend it to anyone. There must be better books about kitchens. I am still looking for them.

Kitchen Makeover Ideas.......2006-01-02
If you dream of remodeling your kitchen, don't start until you look at lots and lots of idea books and magazines. There is so much to consider (layout, storage, colors, and more) and this is an expensive project. Many of the examples in this book are the latest in dream kitchens and that will get you thinking.
If the budget won't stretch to something as fancy as these, there are other books that might help scale down the concepts, but at least you know what the possibilities are.
Book Description
Creating the perfect kitchen is like cooking a special meal: you have to pore through the recipes, consider the ingredients, and imagine how everything will finally come together. And that’s exactly what House Beautiful’s new guide allows home decorators to do. First, the “Design” section helps you identify your style, decide on an effective layout, figure out infrastructure (lighting, electrics, fittings, and appliances) and establish storage needs. Then, in the “Decorate” section, sumptuous photos provide decorating inspiration for color schemes, window dressings, finishing touches, and more. Best of all, there’s no need to follow one plan from start to finish: pick and choose the elements that seem most practical and appealing to you from the many different options. The result: a kitchen that’s made to order!
