You'll find it hard to tear yourself away from the gorgeous world tour of garden photos of this colorful book. More inspiration than practical guide, there's plenty to admire no matter what your style preference. Choose from among stately formal gardens, shady riverbanks, tidy herb beds, or complex succulent showcases, all presented with stunning depth of color on pleasingly glossy paper. Each photo has accompanying suggestions and design hints from the gardeners responsible for such glory. The text is scant, but what there is makes for interesting reading.

Design histories, the practical needs for each environment that resulted in creative and stunning plant choices, important elements of each type of design--these are all included as the sidelines to the incredible pictures. In the section entitled "Bringing It Home," the text expands to practical tips to help you duplicate the looks you've admired on previous pages--each style is covered in slightly greater depth, but the focus is on design, rather than plant care or environmental suitability. The perfect book to pore over on a cold and rainy day, The World of Garden Design is fabulous fodder for brainstorming sessions in developing fresh ideas for your own gardens. For those lucky enough to travel the world seeing various gardens in person, this book will give you ideas for new places to visit, or lovely reminders of the places you've been. --Jill Lightner

3 out of 5 stars Very beautiful book........2001-01-27

This book is very beautifully put together. The pictures are bright and clear. The writings are interesting. Very helpful to to give you ideas for your own garden.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos from around the world.......2000-06-13

This wonderful book takes you on a tour of some of the world's most beautiful gardens and shows you how to bring ideas from them home to your own space. It is divided into geographic areas including Italy, Britain, France, Japan and the tropics. In each section the unique style and methods of the area are explored in detail with page after page of vibrant color photos.

The adaptation of the garden ideas to the American scene is presented in the "Bringing it Home" section that is part of each regional overview. Here we see how the classical principles of each world region have been applied to a number of noteworthy American gardens. There is also a more in depth look at one special garden, including a complete garden plan in the "Garden Tour" part of each "Bringing it Home" section.

I like the organization of this book, the history, and the personal touch of the many gardeners and designers that it provides. The book is of excellent quality with outstanding photography. I recommend it to anyone interested in an overview of the fine gardens of the world or in finding exciting ideas for their own garden.

5 out of 5 stars Global Gardening Inspirations.......2000-03-28

Take a meadow's worth of gorgeous photos, throw in more than a potful of great gardening tips, and finish with an abundance of historic and artistic context and you get "World of Garden Design," from the creators of Garden Design Magazine. Enticing images and stellar ideas notwithstanding, I most valued the latter component. Through a thorough tour of history's major gardening styles-- including Italian, English, French, Caribbean and Asian-- and an examination of their signature elements, "World" nicely gathers a number of my passions-- art, design, gardens, history-- into one bountiful eyeful and one great read. Its focus on design, though, is what stands out-- a refreshing antidote to the dozens of gardening books that emphasize the practical at the expense of the magical.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but...?.......2000-03-27

I am a recent subscriber to the magazine, so I was drawn to the book by it's truly AMAZING photos. The garden definitions at the beginning of each section were a nice addition, too. I do wish, however, it had just a BIT more content. It is inspiring to leaf through, and dream!

Exploring Garden Style takes a commonsense approach to an often daunting subject: how to create a garden based on a particular theme, style, or need. From kitchen gardens to tropical gardens, sound ideas are combined with inspiring prose to motivate any gardener. Included is "Going Native" by Andy Wasowski, a look at the joys of creating a landscape that nurtures both indigenous wildlife and the gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gardening Stories.......2006-05-10

Okay, I'm a sucker for gardening stories ... personal experiences of gardener's and their gardens. These are stories of real people and the evolution of their gardens. There are ideas here for everyone with great photos for inspiration and many stories include a layout of the garden. It makes for good browsing to get motivated to get out and work in the dirt to create my own special sanctuary.

5 out of 5 stars Both Attractive and Useful.......2003-11-26

In this book 20 garden designers share ideas and techniques for creating a beautiful garden in a unique style. The book is divided into three parts - Traditional Gardens, Naturalistic Gardens and Specialty gardens. Each part is composed of short, beautifully-illustrated articles written in a very personal style by a gardener, landscape designer or horticulturist.

It is the personal nature of each article that contributes most to the appeal of this book. Take the opening of Nani Waddoups article titled "Tropical Garden, Temperate Zone". She writes "The newer parts of our garden look a little out of place..." How can you resist an opening like that? Her article describing her garden - listed in the Smithsonian Registry of Gardens - shows how her Hawaiian background prompted her and helped her to develop a lush pseudo-tropical garden in the Pacific Northwest.

My favourite section is that on Naturalistic Gardens. Five writers form points as far apart as Connecticut and Texas share with the reader ways in which they used the local climate, geology, soil and plants to create a garden that has given each of them great pleasure and satisfaction.

Top marks to the Taunton Press for introducing these garden writers first to Fine Gardening magazine and now in book form for those of us who like to sit down and read the whole collection. The editors have put together a book that offers gardeners a diversity of fresh ideas in a most attractive format.

A few years ago, when perennials were the buzz, we would have laughed at the idea of annuals being described as "cutting edge." Annuals were tacky purple petunias or globs of geraniums; maybe your Grandma liked annuals, but they weren't for modern gardens.

Now annuals are so hot they sizzle. Horticulturists introduce new colors and exciting forms so fast we grow dizzy. Old, forgotten types of annuals are being reintroduced, and many of these are noteworthy for their statuesque shapes or spectacular perfume. Annuals with Style explores this newly fashionable world of gardening with annuals, where innovation in flower and foliage keeps pace with ideas about style.

One of the greatest things about annuals is that they grow to maturity and die in one gardening season, so they are fun to play around with. A tree is a big investment of money and space, and shrubs grow for years, but annuals require no such commitment of time, room, or resources. You can experiment, experience near-instant gratification, toss them out at the end of the season, and try something new next year.

Mike Ruggiero and Thomas Christopher capture the essence of garden creativity as they advise on how best to use the many kinds of annuals now widely available. Have you seen the new variegated impatiens? How about coleus leaves so boldly splashed with color that they look as though variegation was invented just for them? Scale, texture, form, and color are all considered when using annuals in pots, hanging baskets, or in the ground. Practicalities such as starting from seed, soil preparation, mulching, watering, pinching, and fertilizing are thoroughly discussed and an encyclopedia of essential annuals provides the basics as well as plentiful color photographs. --Valerie Easton

    Book Description

After years of playing second fiddle to perennials, annuals are now back in style and extremely popular with top garden designers. In Annuals with Style, noted gardening experts Michael Ruggiero and Tom Christopher have created an inspirational design book that features new ways to use these versatile, colorful, and inexpensive plants. Included are complete profiles and growing tips.

5 out of 5 stars Annuals Will Feed Your Gardening Creativity!.......2002-03-18

Where perennials and shrubs provide static and permanent elements in your garden, annuals are a fluid element that you can change from year to year. This book gives you all the backround you need to get started with an attractive Annual garden.

It is divided into three parts: garden design; making them grow; and an illustrated guide to many common annuals. The design section details the process of selecting plants, not only for color, but compatability with their location and neighboring plants. The second section will help cure your "brown thumb" if you have difficulty keeping things alive. You will learn how to properly feed and water your plants. The last section has color photos and great detail about each plant presented; Latin name, sowing, growing and care are here.

This book is not only useful for researching and designing your garden, it is beautifully illustrated with rich color photographs throughout. There are also some color diagrams where appropriate.

Write your name in this book and chain it to your coffee table. After seeing your results the first season, the neighbors may be tempted to carry it off for their own use!

5 out of 5 stars Truly lovely and informative book.......2001-10-18

You may not look at annuals the same way again after reading this excellent book. It is full of ideas on how to use them in your garden and should offer any gardener bored with those boring old marigolds some inspiration! You can tell that the authors are passionate about their subject but the photographs alone could make this a book worth purchasing. Simply magnificient photography! A beautiful book and one of the best I have ever seen on annuals.

4 out of 5 stars A good Resource for planting ANNUALS.......2001-07-23

I must admit - I do not love annuals- Having said that much to preface my comments- For me this is the only book I need on this subject! It covers planning, planting and maintenence.

The planning section seems especially helpful and will be a tremendous help in achieving a finished product that fits a desired look. The color planning seems very well addressed with particular attention the area to be planted in formulation the design elements (suggested on graph paper).

The writer seems to love annuals and it shows! The photography is beautiful. This would make a nice housewarming gift!

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best gardening books I have read!.......2000-10-09

This book is not just about annuals, though it is definitely the best book about annuals. There are so many great design ideas in this book, including using annuals in a "mixed border," (perennial garden). There is an excellent section on container gardening with lots of professional tips. Some of the topics are just excellent: "using color," "harmony and contrast," "color and variegated foliage," etc. This is the only book I have read that deals with design issues in such a clear and creative way. Anyone can make a beautiful garden after reading these great design tips.

The section on propagation is also excellent. Growing from seed and making cuttings are covered in every detail with great step by step pictures. There is also a step by step formula to determine how many plants you need for an area.

The last section of the book is an alphabetical listing of each annual, listing its use, culture, and professional tips. You will find out the best and newest varieties here. The writing is filled with the enthusiasm of these authors. There is so much good information in this book, I wish every gardener would read it, including the people who think they just like perennials!

    5 out of 5 stars A Book with Passion.......2000-08-07

There are literally hundreds of books on various types of plants (perennials, annuals, trees, ...), not to mention an endless array of books on garden design. So, how does one begin to differentiate the great ones from the okay ones?

One of my litmus tests for a really great gardening book is whether or not it motivates me to try something new. Michael Riggerio and Tom Christoper's Annuals With Style not only motivated me to get planters for my deck, but converted me from an annual atheist to a devote believer in the power of annuals to make the ordinary garden extraordinary.

I'd expect nothing less from a book Michael Riggerio co-authored. Having worked at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) since the age of 14, he is now NYBG's Head Curator. He also teaches an array of courses at NYBG's School of Professional Horticulture. While few horticulturist's resume come close to his, the secret of his book and his own professional success lies in one word, which I have heard used over and over again to describe this remarkable individual. That word is "passion".

Michael Riggerio's passion for plants is manifested through out Annuals With Style. The book has hundreds of beautiful pictures, most of which he took throughout his career. (He never goes anywhere without his camera. You never know when you will see an interesting plant!) It also gives the reader practical, clear instructions on how to lay out a bed or border, as well as how to calculate the number of plants needed to make the most intricate designs. (Following the book's guidance, I designed a giant clock made out of annual flowers, just like the one I saw in Europe many years ago!) The plant descriptions go way beyond the basic growing zones, size, shape, color and required sun light. Detailed oriented individuals and horticulturists will appreciate the extra tid-bits of information, such as each plant's family and origins.

4 out of 5 stars Gardening - the art of the possible.......2003-10-10

The writer starts out by saying "gardening, like politics, is the art of the possible". This book is written "to help non-professionals solve their landscaping problems by showing how other home gardeners have dealt with similar landscaping issues".

Written for the gardener in the Pacific Northwest, this book offers ideas, designs and methods for the creative gardener. In each of the eight chapters the writer introduces the topic, provides some background and context, then describes and illustrates two or three gardens where the owners have successfully faced similar issues. Some chapters, for example "Gardens in Small Spaces" and "Gardening on a Slope", address problem sites that some gardeners are faced with, others, such as "Waterwise Gardens" and "Gardens for Attracting Wildlife", help gardeners implement their choices in design. Each chapter has a plant list (and, mercifully, it's quite compact), a checklist to guide planning - sometimes with how-to-do-it diagrams - and some additional ideas to enrich this style of garden.

The writer is knowledgeable about the problems and possibilities facing the gardener in the Pacific Northwest and writes with clarity, always maintaining a balance between the lyrical and the practical.

    L. Quartermain Younker's photographs illustrate the richness of northwest gardens and focus on some of the successful treatments of daunting sites and the applications of environmentally friendly principles.

This book will jump-start the novice gardener in the Pacific Northwest as well as offering mnore experienced gardeners new ideas and new viewpoints.

Garden Style is a rich book of ideas for those who have sun porches, glassed-in plant rooms, areas in the home that seem to be neither outside nor inside but somewhere in between. There's advice on how to accent plant life with bright patterned rugs, glass topped tables, or wicker chairs. Also included are ideas for kitchens and living rooms "inspired" by garden style: a few gaffes here, including curtain rods made from twigs, which look, well, weird. Much more successful are pages devoted to a "miniature conservatory," like the terrariums kids buy in kits, but these are built carefully and delicately--an ecosystem small enough to fit on a kitchen shelf. For those whose potting sheds have become dark caverns full of lost tools, there's a section devoted to this often neglected but highly important room, one that, if bright and well-organized, can inspire even the most weary gardener: all the tools lined up, all the seeds and bulbs labeled and in order, full of promise. For the city dweller there's advice on roof gardens designed around the skyline, and these have a wonderful feeling of oasis and secrecy. --Emily White

5 out of 5 stars You will drool over this one..........2001-04-29

This has quickly become one of my favorites. Every vignette has ideas popping off the page. I'm a designer in a small design firm and we have used it with clients. The other designers got excited about it as I did. Clinets are asking us to bring the outdoors in and indoors out. This book is loaded with ideas that are practical and don't break the pocketbook.

I wasn't sure that this was what I was looking for on my first pass through. It didn't take long on my second time around to become thoroughly absorbed in each room. The photography is great. I've already been inspired and thats just from looking at the pictures!
