easy transaction and quick receipt. thank you!
You get what you pay for..........2005-09-12
After buying an old victorian we were blessed with a pink and magenta kitchen. Donned with the task of redecorating this anathema, I bought this book to help with color choices and design. The small size did not lend itself well to decorating ideas (squinting for ideas is never a good idea - my husband worries I'll mistake the oven for cabinets and we'll end up with black enamel cabinets and a cherry wood stained oven if that's possible), but it was helpful, and I do believe that you get what you pay for. This book is less expensive and therefore, less bulky...so I give it 3 stars.
nifty little idea book.......2003-07-28
This is a small book, slightly wider than pocket-sized, with a single full-page photo for each kitchen and a writeup by a British magazine editor on the facing page. I found it refreshing as it presents views from across the pond, quite different from the sprawling natural wood kitchens typically shown in American magazines. Most of these kitchens are quite compact and do not have islands, and very few can take advantage of full picture windows or features such as exposed ceiling rafters. So if you're working with a large kitchen space (say from an addition), you might not have much use for this book. What these kitchens offer is creativity in the selection and coordination of color, texture, materials, and pattern, in many different styles (contemporary, Shaker, etc), all narrated expertly by Ms. Savill. It's a neat book for browsing, and you can get a miniature lesson on decoration on most any page.

Have you ever said, "If only I could find the perfect ____ for this space"? Stylish Solutions, a little book of clean, Scandinavian-inspired design, focuses on six different types of furniture that can make the difference between a room that's bland and one that's quietly (never flashily) inspired. These are the workhorses of the home: coffee table, sideboard or cupboard, sofa, bookcase, mantel, and bed. And once you have the right piece for the space, this book will help you figure out the right placement and arrangement for that piece and the ones that surround it. The living spaces shown are solid, sometimes idiosyncratic, always interesting, and definitely workable for people with real lives and less-than-perfect homes. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
A room in your home may seem not quite right. Do you change the whole decor with a project that involves considerable time and expense? Or is there a small but elegant alteration that you can make to give the room a new look, a lift? Elizabeth Gaynor and Kari Haavisto have tapped the minds of designers, architects, stylists, art directors, and others with a sophisticated eye for successful decorating to give insights on infusing new life to existing design elements with small but substantive transformations.
Let's face it: We all come with baggage. Very few of us can afford to throw away all our belongings and wipe our decorative slates clean. Rather, we need good ideas to help us use what we have.
Stylish Solutions is a book of such ideas. The homes included are clearly lived in, and the solutions that work here can be made to fit every home, large or small. Specific problems--such as where to place a sofa, how to arrange objects on a coffee table, and what to do to make the most of your mantel or bookshelves--yield a host of conceptual solutions that can be applied to any situation.
Take a classic Biedermeier sofa, for example, then freshen it by pairing it with a modern elliptical table. Drape fabric over a pressed-wood table for a quick, smart sideboard. You'll soon appreciate how various decorative elements come together to add drama to a room and learn to employ these simple ideas to improve the spaces in which you live. Stylish Solutions presents hundreds of easy decorating ideas for cupboards, countertops, coffee tables, and more--ideas that help make big changes with little effort.

Great idea book.......2003-03-18
This is a great book to go to for inspiration when you want to give an ordinary room a unique twist. The focus on some of the often overlooked pieces like coffeetables and sideboards sets this book apart from other design texts, and make it possible to make a few small changes that could really enliven an entire room. The photographs are wonderful, and because each setting is so detailed, you can look at them again and again without getting bored. Not all the ideas are ones that I would want to apply in my own home (that would be impossible, after all). But they are all interesting spaces that I would enjoy exploring; I definitely can't say that for all design books. While this is not a budget-oriented book (and it doesn't claim to be), many of the ideas could be translated into something affordable; more 'vintage' and less 'antique', fewer luxury fabrics, etc. etc. There are a lot of examples of adapting salvaged materials, which appealed to my budget.
If you want advice on how to pull off an entire room, or want something very traditional looking ..., you'll probably want to look elsewhere. Otherwise, enjoy this book!
Interesting although somewhat impractical. . ........1999-10-31
This book was not exactly what I had expected. Although the photographs are beautiful and the book is filled with interesting alternatives to common furniture items, it is somewhat impractical for anyone with budget constraints. Alternatives to regular furniture are suggested by top home interior designers and artists, which make them lovely and innovative, but beyond the monetary reach of most people (they include expensive antiques, etc). I had expected something a little more applicable to everyday life.
Book Description
Many glossy interiors books celebrate the joys of loft living or focus on beautiful houses in glamorous locations. However, for many people around the world, home is not a loft, nor a Tuscan palazzo, but an apartment. This invaluable book responds to the challenge that apartment living offers, inspiring you to create an elegant but highly practical home.
Customer Reviews:
These apartments are not like any in which I have ever lived.......2002-12-15
The only way a person could have one of the apartments in this book is if they were a character on Friends or a stockbroker on Wall street. The style is a mix of modern and traditional. The photos are beautiful. However, what you can take from this book may be limited and may depend upon your purpose.
Recommendation:
If you are looking for a book on decorating tips and projects to improve your apartment, then skip this book. If you were wondering how the other half live or want to be inspired, then try this book.

101 great ideas.......2005-08-07
i'm always happy with the 101 books by julie savill. her 101 kitchens was great and inspired me to redo my kitchen myself with a 'mini' remodel. this is true of her 101 bathrooms: stylish room solutions. you can find some good ideas from complete overhaul of your kitchen to just changing the colors and knobs. her entire approach is fresh. we americans get so bogged down in the 'sameness' of a look or 'fad' that runs through our kitchen and bath magazines. open up sunset magazine from one month to the next and the bathrooms begin to look the same. not in this little book of 101 gems. i wouldn't mind if the books were a bit bigger, but then again they fit so nicely in your handbag or briefcase for lunchtime planning.
Great book.......2003-08-10
I really liked this book. It has a lot of very nice designs, that I never thought about.
I like the concept of how the book is designed - straight and simple.

not worth it.......2003-08-01
This book is about the size of a child's Golden Book; it's an unfortunate size to choose for a design book, but I probably wouldn't have minded so much if the designs were any good. The "where to buy" section at the back lists American sources, yet the pictures don't seem to be of American bathrooms (there's an odd aesthetic in them that's hard to pin down, except that these just don't look like the styles and materials that you see at Expo, on HGTV or in your general design mag).
If you love the idea of putting wooden floors, toilets wedged into spaces exactly their own width, & toilet tanks concealed in wooden cabinets into your bathroom, this is the book for you. If you're planning a remodel where you're just replacing everything & you want color scheme or materials ideas, probably anything on the shelf at Home Depot would be better.

Great Pictures...tough to find the furniture.......2006-06-27
If you want to see pictures that show parts of some great looking bedrooms, than this is a great book. However, if you want to see pictures of the full bedroom, or to use it as a shopping mate - BUY SOMETHING ELSE! I went to every single recommended website for bedding, and not a single site carried any beds like the bed that I liked in this book. This was a complete waste of money for me!

Ideas for Renovating Your Bathroom.......2006-12-07
The TV renovation programs inspire us and now here's the book to help with your own bathroom makeover project. It contains lots of ideas, but I'd hesitate to tackle some of these with my limited practical skills. There are instructions but sometimes they assume the reader has some plumbing knowledge already. It does give adequate help for removing tiles, old sinks and tubs and mirrors. Team it up with another book on bathroom how-to so you don't find yourself with the bathroom all torn up and inadequate info to finish it.

Great Variety of Rooms!.......2005-07-31
I really like this book, I browsed through it (the UK version) when I was visiting over there, and bought it over here when I came back to save on my luggage weight. I like the fact that it is small in size (to bring with you to the stores), but it is also why I gave it 4 stars. The thing that I enjoy most about books of this type, is the ability to look at large pictures of the rooms and then have a breakdown of them so that you can figure out how to create the look for yourself. Most of the rooms are not what I imaginge for myself, but it is a great variety that will appeal to a broad audience.
Great ideas for real living rooms........2003-10-08
This is a great little book. It's small ... only measures 6" x 5.5" and only half an inch thick, but it has a wonderful selection of pictures of rooms in all styles. All of the rooms are sized like you would find in a regular home -> too often design books feature fabulous large rooms that most of us don't have. I don't think anyone could flick through this book and not find rooms that they like. It's great for showing different styles, but also shows great colour combinations.
