Achitectual Graphic Standards.......2007-08-27
The reprsentation was not clear this is a reproduction of a 1935 published book. This is not usefull in todays building enviroment.
I find it indispensable........2007-07-05
A must have for anyone working or having an interest in architecture. As a companion to the current edition, it provides guidelines for laying out domestic serving pantries and other forgotten features. Should one wish, it also provides superior graphics as models for fixture symbols.

SMITH AND ROBERSON'S BUSINESS LAW is an updated classic that features a comprehensive presentation of business law topics, end-of-chapter cases with edited facts and decisions to preserve the language of the court, and topics that reflect AACSB guidelines. This is the most complete and credible business law book available, and has a long tradition of accuracy and comprehensiveness, while keeping up-to-date edition after edition by consistently incorporating the latest issues and topics.
Customer Reviews:
Business Law-Smith and Roberson.......2003-10-05
This book is well-organized and written. It covers the major
subject areas for the CPA exam thoroughly. There is more than
adequate treatment in the areas of contract law, sales
transactions, agency, partnerships, corporate formation and
the minor subject areas of the CPA examination. There is good
coverage of legal foundations with ample exercises to develop
the legal concepts presented. This work should be retained for
use as a reference guide. In addition, it is easy to read and understand.
Concise, and usually accurate, with good examples.......1998-09-06
A good overview of US law. There are issues which are matters of opinion and not explained well enough (ex. ethics), and perhaps needn't be addressed at all in a law book. The examples and the references make it a worthy purchase overall.
Book Description
Natural swimming pools rely on the correct balance of plants and microorganisms to clean and purify the water. They are a safe place for children to play and birds to drink, and are a dramatic example of ecological design, combining the natural and man-made worlds while creating beauty. These pools offer enjoyment not only in the warm months, but during winter, too, when they can be used for ice skating and other activities. Often the focal point of a garden, natural swimming pools blend into their environments, flowing into the surroundings with plants and rocks. They reflect the changing seasons and they enhance the environment naturally. They are easy and less costly to maintain than chemical pools, providing significant savings in water. Chlorine and other common pool chemicals are hazardous to human health and are not used. This book is a necessary resource for anyone interested in having a natural swimming pool and shows how a natural swimming pool system works, as well as the environmental, health, and safety benefits it offers. Drawings, diagrams, and charts cover planning, design, biology, materials, construction, planting, and maintenance. Over 300 beautiful color pictures feature projects that will inspire you to have your own natural water garden where you can swim in harmony with nature at any time.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect book.......2007-09-04
Great book for all aspects of creating a variety of green/natural pools. Beautiful pictures and good illustrations and copy to help in decision making.
YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK .......2007-08-22
Simply put this book is a MUST READ for anyone intersted in any aspect of Sustainable and Ecological Design. It should be read right along with Permaculture by Mollison, the Passive Solar Handbook by Mazria, Rainwater Harvesting by Lancaster, and ecocities to Living Machines by Todd. Even if you aren't specifically interested in making a swimming pool (which you will be after reading it) the insights into the workings of hydro-ecologies and how to design natural systems are invaluable!
If you aren't interested in the whole range of sustainability but just this particular topic of pool design then this book is STILL A MUST READ. If you're an ecologist who wants to make a pool, or a pool designer who wants to do something ecological this book provides an excellent layman's understanding of ecological design, with good technical and artistic advice for how to do it, and good technical and artistic advice for swimming pool construction.
I would still advise you to also purchase the book Poolscaping as a companion to this one.
This is an all around excellent book buy it now.
Beautiful photos; strange text.......2007-08-01
Thumbing through the book will make you want to move to Austria or Germany where beautiful "natural" pools are somehat established. Why is the U. S. so environmentally backward? Unfortunately, the text is awkwardly translated at times such that one has to struggle to figure out what is meant with limited success. The assumption is that one is swimming only in the summer, but in California we may want to swim year round. Useful especially since so little information is available. Can't understand why the publisher didn't insist on professional proofreading.Buy it for inspiration, or wait for the next edition, or wait for one more applicable to your area. It does provide info in the back about two U.S resources, one in CA.
Very complete book .......2007-02-24
Is the book i need for learning on natural swimming pool. Now i can make my own pool
Surprisingly COMPREHENSIVE!.......2007-02-09
This large sized book covered the subject exceedingly well in lots of color photos with explanations and, more importantly, in lots of diagrams and nuts and bolts descriptions. I only read sections here and there but what I did read clearly indicated to me that you could actually use this book to build a natural swimming pool. At the least, you could definitely make a solid decision whether or not you could build or would want to build such a pool on your property. These pools are basically like salt water aquariums in that you have to make a biosphere and monitor it. In some ways it's not as easy as it sounds but also not as hard as it sounds. However, start up takes time and it can be tricky to finally reach environmental stabilization. I am not going to build a natural pool but I still found this book very useful. At the end this book are MANY pages of water plants and trees recommended for certain types of water areas. There are zone maps of the US included for reference. So even if you just want to make a little ornamental fountain in a big pot on the patio deck or a pond or a bog out back, this book has a VERY comprehensive set of plant lists you will find exceedingly useful. 18 pages of them. Categories include Submerged Plants, Floating Plants, Floating Leaved Plants, Shallow Marginal Plants, Deep Marginal Plants, Moisture-loving Plants, Bog/Marsh Plants, Waterside Plats-Trees & Shrubs, Ferns, Grasses Sedges Reeds and Rushes. Botanical and Common Names are listed along with height, spread, water depth, flower color, flower period, foliage, position, comments and plant zone. It's the best I've seen in any book so far.

Business and Its Environment (5th Edition).......2006-07-19
This book is an easy read. It has tons of useful information. I would recommend this book.
New Edition is Better.......2005-12-05
There is a new edition (the fifth) for this book, and it is better than the edition shown here. While avoiding a polemical view, Baron illustrates business ethical priciples with very poignant examples and stories. The case studies are very up to date and fun to read. More than that, though, the case studies can form a basis for classroom debate and discussion which not only brings the material to life but also promotes critical thinking and articulation among students.
I liked it very much, and recommend it highly.
The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21
The author provided some good examples demonstrating a picture of business and its environment. People who have exposed to Industrial Organization (or at least some levels of application of game theory) will get bored of all arguments without mentioning anything about its quantitative aspect.
The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21
The author provided some good examples to demonstrate some business's environments. The book is very readable. You will get bored if you have exposed to industrial organization or some applications of game theory.
Pretty Easy Reading.......1999-05-30
I've read a good chunk of this book during a B-school elective on non-market strategies, and found it imparted some valuable information. It's not very prescriptive if that's what you're looking for. But it made me feel like I got something out of the class despite an unstellar professor.

A good guide from start to finish .......2007-07-24
As a general civil engineer in private practice this book has provided a good overview on the more abstract side of land development including financing, rezoning, and public involvement. All of which, are topics that typical engineers strugle with as it is not the enjoyable aspect of what engineers are trained to do. Nevertheless, these abstract components are just as real as the plans we develop. Of course, the book is excellent for hands on design and calculation support.
Learn a lot.......2007-05-13
As a novice developer, this book put me on the right track without all the confusion and terms I would have never understood. It was simple to understand and after reading it, I felt like I knew a lot more. Very interesting and satisfying. Great reference guide all the way around.
very good all-around reference.......2004-03-01
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.
Of course, no single book could (or should) be thought of as a substitute for the experience and mentoring received from seasoned professionals in a design office, but this one has enough technical explanation and details to get you going with confidence.
I choose this one over the Colley book (reviewed both before making purchase) as Land Development Handbook has more of the technical info that engineers would seek.
Difficult to follow!.......2003-12-16
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore County and we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.
I recomend burning this book!!!!!!!
A Must Have Pub.......2002-07-04
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.
ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

The emphasis is on ethics, allowing readers to identify the values that influence how cases are decided. Authored by experts in the field, this exciting compilation of today’s hot-button issues will prove an excellent introduction to business and legal issues.
The legal environment of business is thoroughly treated in an extremely reader-friendly manner; various topics include: the American legal system, dispute resolution, constitutional principles, cyberlaw, white-collar crime, contracts, sales, product and service liability, the law of property, agency law, labor-management relations, environmental law, securities trading and issuance, antitrust laws, and debtor-creditor relations.
An excellent desk reference for the legal departments of any business, this book also provides an interesting read for anyone interested in business and ethics.

Customer Reviews:
Covers all the bases without unnecessary verbage!.......2006-11-03
Very good text for any statistics student. Clear and concise explanations. Ten times better than the text I used in undergrad by Newbold.
Great starter book.......2006-10-24
Basic information is all covered in the book. Great if you are taking AP Statistics or a statistics course in your undergrads.
Not Too Bad.......2006-08-03
I have a basic statistics background before I read this book. For me, the book is useful for my basic quantitative research. Last few chapters apply the statistics rules in earlier chapters to the real business environment, which I think it's really practical and interesting. The most I like in this book is the practice questions at the end of each chapter, which apply to everyone's daily life. However, first four chapters cover too many unnecessary topics.
This book requires outside help!.......2006-06-03
This book tends to jump off topic (most aren't explained well). For example, they talk about one thing but the exercises are a bit different than the chapter's topic. Most of the information isn't fully explained. If you are in a class where the instructor assigns the exercise questions for homework, you are screwed. You may not know what to do unless you seek outside help (study guide, tutor etc.) or read beyond the chapter.
A very interesting book... for those who understand statistics.......2006-05-28
The book has a lot of examples and is a must have for those majoring in Finance. Some Universities use this for Intro to Statistics and this book is very didactic. The way it's written out in a form that takes you a another level of reading which makes you feel you're in a rainbow... a reading rainbow... Anway... The book has answers in the back so it's good enough for whenever the professor assigns Homework.

Book Description
Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design workÂuntil now.
Universal Principles of Design is the first cross-disciplinary reference of design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, this book pairs clear explanations of the design concepts featured with visual examples of those concepts applied in practice. From the 80/20 rule to chunking, from baby-face bias to Ockham's razor, and from self-similarity to storytelling, 100 design concepts are defined and illustrated for readers to expand their knowledge.
This landmark reference will become the standard for designers, engineers, architects, and students who seek to broaden and improve their design expertise.
Customer Reviews:
full of info...dry, but usefull........2007-09-18
This reminded me of an old textbook, having very few visual examples and loads of text. That said I have found it a good read with more information than other similar design books. It is a good book to grasp the whole spread of design.
Key Priciples for Every Designer.......2007-09-11
I loved this book for its illustrations, organization & its selection of principles. It covers pivotal ideas from visual design, interaction design, industrial engineering, an communications design & cross-references each principle to related principles & sources for further exploration. It's hard to image a professional in any design field that would appreciate this uniquely valuable & enjoyable reference.
Resource Supreme.......2007-09-10
This book has great visual examples of the concepts in design. Designers, teachers and commercial art directors should have it on a shelf near by.
No big secrets in this book.......2007-07-22
This book does have some useful and interesting principals of design. However most any person who is thoughtful and careful in designing a human interface will figure these things out without this book. In fact a fair percentage of the principals discussed are painfully obvious to anyone.
One of the Best Books in my Library.......2007-07-19
This is an invaluable resource for any designer. Well-organized and easy to read, with a multitude of cross-references. One of the best values I've come across in recent years.

The author provides a straightforward overview of the business of selling commercial property, including coverage of the four main specialty areas -retail, office, industrial, and investmentas well as crossovers and emerging specialties. Rather than pumping a "get rich quick" approach to selling, the author shows brokers that they don't have to sacrifice integrity and ethics to remain competitive and deal oriented. The book includes detailed coverage of
Choosing a company and a specialty that's a good fit for you.
Sales strategies and sales points specific to commercial real estate, including practical suggestions for countering other brokers.
The importance of focusing on exclusive listings, how to find and get the best prospects, and the most effective strategies for marketing the property.
Standard parts and points of negotiation for contracts and forms, including earnest money agreements, leases, options, listings, counter offers, and fee schedules.
Rent and how it is calculated and quoted, including triple net, modified net, gross, and full service leases.
Technical knowledge including agency, law, appraisal, taxation, zoning, surveys, environmental investigations, investment analysis, risk comparison, exchanges, financing, and property management.
The pros and cons of going independent and how to decide if it's the right move for you.
Written in an engaging, straight-talk style, the author shares a wealth of other practical knowledge reaped from 30 years in the business.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for a primer on commercial real estate.......2007-09-01
Don't be mislead by the introduction to the author at the start of the book. The author appears to have been a professional student in his younger days, who had no idea what he wanted to do in life. He has two liberal art undergraduate degrees from two different colleges with a major in philosophy, then he started to work in his dad's commercial real estate firm. I thought oh boy! Do I really need to waste my time on this book?
The book is an excellent primer for those who might be interested in selling commercial real estate. It would even be a worthwhile read for most residential RE agents. It covers many areas which could transfer knowledge to residential agents. While I can see some of the reviewers would be disappointed because it includes many basics in real estate a person considering entering the field should know and gives them a feel for what it's like to work in the field. The author has a variety and good understanding of the entire field of commercial RE, as has had many management positions within the field. What more this isn't book written by someone who has never been in real estate. There are plenty of those books in the market place. Likewise this is not a book about how to get rich quick, which are plentiful in the market place.
Is the book general - yes! Is it informative - yes! Is it interesting reading - yes! If you're a pro in commercial real esate with over ten years experience it's not the book for you.
Informative.......2007-08-24
I would say the book was pretty informative and relatively insightful. It seems there are very few good books on commercial real estate brokerage - and I would recommend this one.
The book is a good broad brush of concepts...if you hunger for knowledge about commercial real estate, this is a good book.
Superb !!.......2007-03-02
As the title and description clearly indicates , this books teaches you the way to make it to the top in commercial real estate brokerage by someone who "has been there" in the ultra competitive (and many times cuthroat) world of commercial brokerage ; This type of education is a must if you expect to make it. As a mid level producer , i already started to use some of his advice and it has helped me to jump to the next level and if you want to make the best of it i recommend you read it twice. You will grow your career by leaps and bounds !!
Should be titled "How to Succeed in Commercial Real Estate BROKERAGE".......2007-02-12
I was disappointed with the book. I expected a book that would describe how to succeed in commercial real estate for someone wanting to buy and lease out commerical properties. This book hardly touched on the topics I wanted to learn about, such as what makes a property a good investment, how to do due diligence on a property when considering it for purchase, tips on finding a good investment and why it's so hard, pros and cons of development vs buying an existing building, etc. I would have appreciated if the front cover would have made the target audience clearer. Read the table of contents carefully before making the assumption I did!
Definitely worth the Read.......2007-01-26
This book maintains a no-nonsense strictly business approach to commercial real estate. The author has some *VERY* good points on countering your competitions sales pitches, and this alone is worth the read. Aside from the fact that the book has well developed chapters, clear concise writing, and few if any mistakes.
Product Description
Thoroughly updated, the second edition of Professional Real Estate Development explains the nuts and bolts of the real estate development industry. You will learn how to develop and manage five types of real estate products: land, residential, office, industrial, and retail uses. Focusing on small-scale projects, the authors show you practical methods for developing each major type of real estate, including feasibility analysis, design and construction, financing, marketing, and management. Photos, site plans, diagrams, and case studies provide examples of actual projects and how the process works. Information is specific and detailed, with costs, rents, and financing information included by product type.
Customer Reviews:
Academic. A text book that needs a refresher for today's issues........2006-04-24
Rick is first and foremost a professor, so the book follows an academic format best suited for the young student of development seeking a broad introduction to the process. Of course, the real world is more complex than any text book could ever capture. That said, the book has become a bit dated for the contemporary developer, whose world is increasingly governed by investors, special interest groups and oft ill-informed government officials! The book delivers fundamental building blocks in a logical, sequential process. The examples cited are, as another reviewer pointed out, on average probably 14 year old analogies. Perhaps the largest ommission is an accurate portrayal of what a developer really does - assembles a diverse team of people together to share in a singular vision, then rule over this creative, temperamental team with an iron fist in velvet gloves. A chapter called 'Cat Herding' would best summarize that world.
My recommendation is, buy the book, join the Urban Land Institute, attend your meetings, be a good listener, and dont think reading one book will set you off on your path to that infamous (maybe fictitious unless you happen to be the primary investor in an opportunity fund!)in that $100,000,000 net profit deal!
Excellent starter book.......2005-10-02
Excellent starter book. Should be required reading for every real estate professional. Wished I'd had about 5 years ago.
ULI Guide.......2004-01-28
For its high price, you may want to seriously think about your needs. If your intention is to buy a book for a broad overview of the development process with a somewhat academic approach, then this may be right for you. If you are builder or someone with prior real estate brokerage/service experience, you may find this too ivory tower and not practical. This book was a bit theoretical for my taste.
Although this book has been reprinted recently, all the data dates back to the late-1990's. Social and economic data are perhaps presented for illustrative purposes only, however, it is a bit disheartening.
There are some interesting project data, financial models and checklists, but frankly, the reader could figure those out on his/her own with some common sense and marginal experience in the industry.
Bottom line -- my suggestion is to review the book at the public library before you buy.
An Excellent Overview Of The Development Process.......2003-04-23
I am a 66 year old developer with several successful projects under my belt. This is a fine book for beginning, intermediate, and yes, advanced developers. The best I've ever read, and I've got bookshelves full of them. Also, for a modest fee, you can download from the publisher the software used for the financial illustrations in the book. I had to learn this material the hard way, because when I started out, there weren't any good books on development. If you want to be a developer, start here. If you're an experienced developer, you'll learn a lot from this book. I congratulate the authors for putting in such an immense amount of work.
