5 out of 5 stars Small-Scale Herding for Pleasure And Profit.......2007-05-18

Of all the books I have purchased on goat farming, this one is the best by far! Sue Weaver has all the information packed into this small book in a very organized, easy to find manner. By following Sue's methods of caring for goats, we got a very good report from the vet yesterday after examining our 12 Boer goats. This book is a must have for the inexperienced goat farmer!

4 out of 5 stars Worthy book.......2007-05-11

A very easy read for first time goat owners. Covers all aspects and tons of first hand knowledge from the author. Terrific resource references in the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great all-around refference.......2007-03-12

I enjoyed this book very much. I'm planning to get some goats for my small (13 acre) property. I need lots of help clearing and have heard that goats are great for that. The book was very helpful for choosing what I don't want to do with goats as well (milk or meat). It would have been nice to have a section detailing brush clearing goats. I know that there are people who rent out their herds for this purpose, and would be interested in learning more about that subject.

4 out of 5 stars Love it. .......2007-09-03

This was my first Bertrice Small's book and I have to say I love it. Although not quite 5 stars since I thought there could be a little more dramas to it. I do enjoy the Channel, it's a different world, a world that I'm sure we women need from time to time. Wouldn't that be divine? I can imagine my own story already. *sigh*

As for the hero and heroine... I have to say I absolutely love Ashley. She sounds pretty sexy and daring and not to mention a woman worthy of being called a woman. She's successful and will be damn to let anyone take what she put so much heart and effort into, even if he is her dead relative. As for Ryan? One word: Sizzling Hot! Ok that was two but two perfect description!

I'm glad I found and read this book first before going back to read Forbidden Pleasure. I would so hate to miss out on a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Dangerous Love.......2007-08-16

I really liked this book. Great adventure as typical of Bertrice Small. I can't wait for the other Border Lord books to come out. I would have to say that by far Bertrice Small is my favorite author.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh!! So disappointed!!.......2007-08-04

According to her grandfather's will, Ashley Kimbrough has until her 35th birthday to get married or else she loses her inheritance. Her attorney's cousin, who is also an attorney, has a male client in the same predicament. The attorneys decide to set up a meeting between these two to see if they hit it off. I won't tell you the rest because it is pretty predictable and I don't want to ruin it for you if you choose to read it.

Betrice Small is one of my all time favorites, but the "Pleasure" series has been a huge disappointment to me. Sure the other two, Private & Forbidden Pleasures were not that bad, but I had to literally force myself to finish this book.

The main focus of this book wasn't even "The Channel". Sure she flicked it on, but hardly. I skipped over the sex scenes and I almost never ever do that in any book! I mean why read Erotica if you're not interested in reading about sex??? Anywhoooo, read it if you like, but don't say I didn't warn you!

4 out of 5 stars Much better than the last one.......2007-07-21

This book was A LOT better than 'Forbidden Plessures' (terrible book). I think it's the best book in the 'Pleasures' series. I'm not sure how I really feel about the series. When I read these books I always feel like there is something missing. I did like Ashley and Ryan but their romance is forgettable. This book was good for a quick read but the love story is not one I'm going to remember.

3 out of 5 stars Sudden Pleasures.......2007-07-18

I was a bit disappointed in this book. I love Bertrice Small books, but this one was not as good as the last "Pleasure" book. Everything fell into place too smoothly, not enough drama between the characters.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for anything "Competitive" .. especially pool........2007-10-09

I enjoy pool ... but found the insights in this book apply to anything at all I do where "winning" is important. So much of what we do, if we want to bring our "A Game" to the table, is controlled by our state of mind. This is the book to read to give yourself an edge you simply can't find anywhere else to keep yourself in the game, enjoy the game at all levels, and take yourself to the next (and next and next) level. For those who consider themselves to be analytical, this book will teach you why your pool shot missed. These tips can also be applied to other areas of life.

5 out of 5 stars As reading Pleasures of Small Motions.......2007-01-12

I think of all the times why I missed, this book tells the tail.
For any of you whom thinks themselves as analytical, you must read -- there is so much other than aim and shoot, it's not even funny.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-09

Not only is this book great for pool, but the knowledge you can aquire is easily applicable to other activities and aspects of life. It can take a while to read since it is pretty mind bending to absorb it all, but well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-07-10

Each chapter offered great advice on the mental game of pool. Immediately after reading the book, I could tell that my game had picked up a notch. (And exactly one month after reading the book, my 8-ball skill level in my pool league was also raised a notch.)

I learned to stop putting pressure on myself to play my "best game" in high-pressure situations (think about it: if your "best" game happened all the time, it would be your "normal" game) and instead concentrate on playing MY game, the one that I am accustomed to playing most of the time.

I also learned to stop concentrating on making the ball - something that I already know how to do - and to start concentrating on the mechanics of my stroke, something that frequently causes me to MISS the ball!

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his or her game, regardless of skill level. This book will teach you to think realistically about your game and to put your existing talents to better use.

1 out of 5 stars Books Like This Should Be "Forbidden".......2007-09-23

Apparently there are enough easily-titillated people with more money than taste to warrant the existence of this book. This is the second installment in Small's "Pleasures" series (her and her series...yikes). At this point there are two others in print and another to be released next year. I will read none of the others, not even for a laugh.

I'd say I could eat a bowl of Alpha Bits and crap a better novel, but that would be childish. Small, who heretofore has written historical "romance" (history with sex is more like it), has branched out into contemporary erotica. Or so we're told. If you've read any real erotica, you'll recognize this for what it really is--a goofball romance with some "naughty" language, action, and sex toys thrown in. Erotica is the exploration of the human psyche and its relationship with sexual pleasures. It is felt, not dictated. Erotica maintains that feeling throughout. Any relationship between characters is secondary to the feeling. I think it's understood that erotica is not love stories. Erotica doesn't even need to have a plot.

"Forbidden Pleasures" is not erotica. Novelist Emily Shanski is told by her publisher that her next book must be "sexier" if she is to keep her contract. But how can she write sexy (whatever that means) when she herself is a virgin, pure as the driven snow? I suppose imagination and actually talking to other people isn't an option. Emily has to get that cherry popped, and who better to do it than (insert standard adjectives of handsome masculinity here) Michael Devlin, her new editor. And then there's something called the Channel which is like a sexual fantasy holodeck for bored suburban housewives and is provided by the local cable company. Anyway, between the fleshy Michael and the fantasy Justin Malincourt, Emily learns all about sex, sexuality, and how to write a sexier book.

I'll just touch on a few points.

I really hate reading about two characters having phone sex. Where's the point in that? I'm already an observer, am I not? How much further removed do I need to be?

Small has no handle on the standard modern vernacular--that is, she doesn't know how people in the 21st century actually talk. All of her characters have the same soulless speech patterns of the very wealthy and the very distantly removed from...oh...the people who would buy the book perhaps. She has no sense of slang at all. We're all over the f-word by now, I hope. I almost choked on my root beer when, while preparing some dinner, Michael asks Emily what he can do to help, and she suggests he toss the salad. In my corner of the world, that's slang for masturbation.

Please, I mean no offense to people who enjoy unorthodox sex. All acts of love and pleasure are fine by me. In this book, Michael presents this as something Emily should experience. Personally, I can live without it. I think plenty of people can live without it. But Small seems obsessed with what she's called in other books the "rose hole" and the "portal of Sodom". I don't think an author scores kinky points simply by having this in a book. It kind of has to fit the mood, the tempo, and the people who are doing it.

The New Jersey Romance Writers (whoever they are) gave this thing the 2006 Golden Leaf Award for a long contemporary novel. It must have run unopposed.

3 out of 5 stars Between Okay and Good.......2007-09-17

Well, where to start? I loved the first 50 pages and read them very quickly. I instantly loved the spark between Mick and Emily and was rooting for them from their first meeting.

Then it took a turn. Emily is over 30 and a virgin. Okay, that didn't bother me. What bothered me is she didn't seem to know anything. I mean, come on. In this day and age? The woman writes romance novels for cripes sakes, and doesn't know anything? Then there was the whole immediately going into bed factor ~ seemed to kill the chemistry for me right away. And don't get me started on the Angel Face thing. Blech.

After suffering through pages 50-60, I started liking the book again. Save for the fact that Emily, a 31-year-old woman living in modern times didn't know a woman could get pregnant from having sex the first time. Again, give me a break. Other than that, I found myself smiling at the dialogue between Mick and Emily again and actually enjoying the story.

One other tiny thing that bothered me was the fact that Ms. Small tends to repeat herself ~ almost to the exact sentence. I would read a sentence that had already been written 50 pages prior. I had to overlook that and just continue on.

This book could have gone either way with me ~ today, I was in a more forgiving mood and chose to overlook the little things that may have turned this into a wallbanger. I'd say it was somewhere between Okay and Good. I liked it and it kept my interest for a day of reading, which was something I hadn't done in a long time. I've already ordered the other two books in the Pleasures Series and am hoping that I'm not disappointed

2 out of 5 stars A little hard to read..........2007-09-03

I found that the story was quite boring. The plots were thin and the characters were quite immature when it comes to their bedroom manner. I understand Emily being a virgin and all but seriously, she was acting a little um, highschool-ish? I've read alot of romance whose heroine were all virgins but not one of them acted like Emily. You would think with being an observer of the Channel and a romance writer, even if they were more on the sweet side then erotic, she would have more inside view then what she saw in sex ed class in grade schools. Alright, I guess I can give her a little benefit of the doubt but definitely not Michael who supposedly a ladies' man. The only characters I like were Rina, Dr Sam and Aaron. I was quite displeased with Savannah and Reg. I mean how can she love someone who cheated and lied to her? I'm ok with relationships like the one Lora Leigh wrote about in her version of Forbidden Pleasures. That's ok to me since all party agreed and were open and honest with each other. But with Savannah and Reg, she didn't approve but she won't say anything cus she "loves him". That just totally ruins it for me in this book. I was even more bothered by it then Emily's sexual inexperience that seems more childish then adult.

Anyways, it took me 2 days to read this instead of my usual one night or half a day. It's a good thing that I read Sudden Pleasure first and enjoyed that one else I would write this series off my list.

2 out of 5 stars Fun...but very thin plot.......2007-08-08

I agree with all of the not-so-pleased comments that have already been posted. This book would not have been published if it didn't have an established author's name on the cover.

I will admit it is a page turner, to some extent. But, in the end, there is really no substance here. The heroine is a 30+ year old virgin. That's fine, but she then jumps with both feet into having sex with Mick AND has no inhibitions, no matter what Mick suggests. She makes that transition waaaaaaaaay too easily. Much of the dialogue is stilted, particularly among the two main characters. In fact, I think the secondary characters were much more realistic and interesting.

And the ending...the placement of the ring...how unimaginative!!

Save your money, skip this one.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible!.......2007-06-16

I couldn't wait to read this book. I've been reading Bertrice Small for years. She's my favorite author. I never thought I would give any of her books less than 4 stars but I have to give this book 1 star. It was that bad.

I read the reviews before I bought it but I ignored them because people gave "Memory Of Love" and "Bedazzled" bad reviews too, but I loved them. The reviews are not wrong. This book is terrible. I couldn't even finish it. I read the first few chapters and was shocked at how bad it was. I hated all of the characters in this book, especially the heroine. She was so immature - I couldn't believe that she was over the age of 30. She's my least favorite heroine of all time. Private Pleasures was not one of her best books, but I did enjoy it enough to finish it. It was a lot better than this book. The parts I hated the most was when the herione visited The Channel. I skimmed through those parts, because, they were so boring. I think Ms. Small needs to stick to historicals.

Do not let this book stop you from reading other books by Bertrice Small. She's usually a great writer. The O'Malley Series, Lara Series, Beloved, Blaze Whyndam and Hellion (just to name a few) are really good. I'm not sure why she decided to put out such a bad book. Even though this book was bad, I am looking forward to reading the latest book in the Border Cronicles series that comes out later this year.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite chicken book!.......2007-10-05

I bought a lot of chicken books before I got my first day-old chicks this past spring; this is my favorite one! I keep referring to it over and over. Great basic info. for those of us who have never done chickens before, with lots of practical tips and tricks from those who have been doing it forever! A few goofy, annoying typos and such, but I was willing to overlook those for the good info.!

I would hate to hurt anyone's feelings, but I didn't really learn anything from this book and it didn't appear to have anything new to say. I should have returned it when I got it, but returning items are a hassle to me. I was just hoping for some new insight or something more daring or direct. hats off to anyone that attempts writing and the criticism that evolves from such work. I hope her next effort is more interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to farm living and farm business.......2007-08-20

Carol Ekarius gives a great introduction to farm living and farm business. Ekarius encourages readers to ask themselves probing questions such as whether the farm will be a lifestyle or commercial enterprise. Most importantly, she compels us to ask if we and our families are ready for the country. Are we prepared to work long hours on the land in the spring, summer, and fall in order to have relaxing winters? Are we prepared to go without the amenities of the "big city"? Do we want to make our living off a farm or just live on a farm?

What I like most about this book is the pictures. The farm scenes with children in orchards gathering apples and caring for livestock, tractors plowing fields, and animals grazing the land were key to getting my family to seriously consider a move to the farm. (I am the only one really into the business aspects right now.) While I cannot remember pictures of junk piles or trash heaps, I do remember Ekarius informing readers that farming culture varies from time and place and that it is important to respect neighbors. (You can trap more flies with honey than vinegar.)

Ekarius' descriptions of farm-related activities such as figuring out which land to buy, farm safety, gardening, livestock, harvesting, and preserving the harvest covers the basics of what to expect after a move to the country before you move to the country. This is a great introduction for anyone interested in going back to the land for either pleasure of profit.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overall look at the subject of Hobby Farms.......2006-08-10

The book was a general look at Hobby Farms. It would be next to impossible for one book to do much else. It certainly gives you a place to start and from there you know what areas you may need to research in more detail on your own. As with all Hobby Farm publications, the photos are so real you feel as if you are on the farm yourself, except no dirt under your fingernails (yet)!

5 out of 5 stars From gardening the land and handling farm animals to handling the seasons, predators, and more.......2005-11-04

Many urban dwellers long to live in the country and dream of owning a small farm: if you're one of them, try Hobby Farm: Living Your Rural Dream For Pleasure And Profit. Author Carol Ekarius' own extensive years of farm dwelling lend to a guide which tells how to not only choose and live on a farm, but how to make some money at the endeavor. From gardening the land and handling farm animals to handling the seasons, predators, and more, Hobby Farm, packed with color photos and insights, covers far more ground than competing farm guides for urban dwellers.

Nora Buckley didn't see the end of her marriage until Jeff asked for a divorce. She also didn't count on him draining their accounts, having the kids sign over their college funds, and sell the family out from under her so he could buy a co-op for his new squeeze. As Nora wallows in self-pity, her friends let her in on a little secret - "The Channel" - where for $3.95 charge to your cable bill, you can experience a fantasy night in a twist of virtual reality. She indulges and soon decides that her fantasy life is more rewarding then her everyday existence, especially once she grows a backbone and starts to stand up to her bossy soon-to-be-ex-husband.

The plot is interesting, but the execution is kind of lukewarm. Small has been quoted as being the granddame of romance, and her dialogue shows it. With the exception of Jeff, who is so unlikable and a complete cliché of the overbearing husband, the dialogue just rings like it is straight out of a circa-1950's romance, with wisps of graphic street language tossed in. Despite that, she has created a story with a very atypical plot (and loaded with sensuality), making it stand out in a sea of formulaic romance novels (though I detested the end - Nora should have risen above the muck).

5 out of 5 stars Private Pleasures.......2007-09-10

Awesome! If we had the "Channel", how would each of us use it? Very different from any other Bertrice Small book I read. Mordern day, and very, very, very sexy.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2007-06-13

I was glued to this book from beginning to end! Wow! Just what I needed to spice up my own sex life. I have since read more of her books and look forward to the newest. If you like fun and fantasy get ready for action!

4 out of 5 stars I want that Cable channel.......2007-06-05

I loved this book. The cable channel portion was exciting, but I also looked forward to what was happening in her real life. The end was quite a twister. I am more the romance novel type reader, but this book came highly recommended to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

1 out of 5 stars Dull and Frustrating.......2007-05-02

I was beyond disappointed with Small's novel. Not only did the ending make little to no sense at all, but the whole work was obviously overlooked by an editor. There were plenty of spelling errors, not to mention horrible exposition and a tremendous problem with redundancy. If you somehow skim over an event, don't worry: It will probably be explained three more times. (Por ejemplo: The main character--Nora--does something or other. She calls up her best friend to tell her what happened. Her best friend tells her husband. Nora calls both her children and her mother and tells them what happened. And so on.)

And granted: I'm aware that this is fiction, even fantastical fiction. But the novel is written so poorly and so unrealistically that I keep being drawn out of the story by the characters' unbelievable conversation and ways of speaking, especially the men in this story--aside from Jeff--who speak somewhat femininely and are all wrapped up in interpersonal relationships. Small knows her audience is primarily women, but that's no reason to be sloppy about it.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, Nora is not even likable. Her blind trust and naivety is nauseating, and will annoy many modern readers. The only reason readers may experience any sympathy from her is because she's a foil to her husband Jeff, who has not one likable characteristic to his name. I kept turning the pages in hopes that Nora would kick him in the crotch or something to that effect. Alas.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of info in concise form!.......2007-09-14

I bought this book in hopes of having a "catch all" reference for our new adventures as shepherds. The book is packed with information in an easy to read format. I will still have to supplement the book with other publications, but it does cover the basics and would serve as a beginner's manual. One thing we have begun doing recently is printing off extension publications and compiling them in a 3 ring binder, arranged by topic. This book is easy to read and would be a good reference for 4H students.

5 out of 5 stars sheep: small-scale sheep keeping for pleasure and profit.......2006-11-06

I have read alot of books on sheep for years, because I own sheep and what to do my best at it. This book was probably the best book on sheep I have ever read. The information was great and easy to understand this book is right on. I have told alot of sheep people I know to get this book

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Hobby Farm book from Sue Weaver..........2006-10-30

I read this book being a complete novice on raising sheep. After reading this book, I really feel I have enough knowledge to raise my own sheep on my hobby farm.

The author (Sue Weaver) writes in a wonderful down-to-earth and very easy to understand style. She covers everything sheep such as: choosing the right sheep breed for your needs, sheep disposition & behavior, sheep housing, nutritional needs, shearing & selling fleece, hoof trimming, delivering lambs, common sheep diseases and how to vaccinate your sheep. Whether you're a total novice like me or an old pro, I think you could learn a lot from this book.

This book is put together on nice glossy paper stock. It also has tons of excellent photos. What I love most is that the author shows many photo's on how to correctly do many procedures w/sheep, such as vaccinations. Also this book sports an excellent resource directory. The directory includes an online directory, sheep organizations, sheep suppliers, state & university resources and my favorite the book and periodical guide to all sheep.

The only thing I would've liked in here (tho, I know it goes way beyond the scope of this book) is a chapter that had every sheep breed with photos and characteristics listed. Tho, the author does go a bit into what breeds are best for milk and for wool.

This book is a great investment. I also have Sue Weaver's other book on raising chickens and it is wonderful as well. If you're reading this Sue, how about a book on raising Ducks and one on raising Alpacas next? :)

5 out of 5 stars Great advice and amazing resources.......2005-07-12

This book is an excellent resource for anyone just considering sheep to seasoned shepherds. The pictures are incredible and the information covered is invaluable. I am going to send this book home with each of my lambs' new owners. The Resources section is a MUST for every new owner.

2 out of 5 stars Captivated.......2007-05-07

Not one of the stories had a great plot and the all lacked even a little bit of a relationship beyond the sexual exploits.

1 out of 5 stars Only one readable story but that's a splendid one!.......2006-11-25

Most of the stories in this book are a total waste, trying to use S&M (which I usually have no objection to unless it's gratuitous and emotionless as presented here) instead of good writing and logical plots to carry the story.

"Ecstasy" is just plain silly with a smirking "hero" who fakes submission in an implausible, female-dominated society. "Bound and Determined" had too many nasty moments where the two protagonists snipped and snarled at each other; I got tired of them both. "Dark Desires" had a few steamy moments but neither character was believable or likable.

However, the last one "A Lady's Pleasure" by Robin Schone was worth the price of admission - glorious, erotic sex with passionate characters you really care about and wish well. This one rates 5 stars, the others are just goofy trash.

Buy this book used or borrow it. It's mostly going to be a waste of your time, your money and your patience.

5 out of 5 stars *OH YEAH*.......2006-07-22

I LOVED IT! Erotic to the core! Great writers all! Highly recommend it if you are a Susan Johnson or Bertrice Small fan!!! If you are not you will be now!

2 out of 5 stars Depends on what you want it for.......2006-07-02

You may rate this item higher...it just depends on what you're looking for in a "romance." This one is dark indeed, a sort of "how-to" for the S&M crowd. Therefore the stories are completely ridiculous, the characters implausible, the attraction between the characters inexplicable, and the setting as realistic as a child's painting. BUT, if you're just into it for the sex, there's plenty of it here, and all the rest of it you're just going to skim over anyway. In which case, you may rate this a bit higher than I have. I KNOW Bertrice Small can do better, though I don't think this is any better or worse than anything else Robin Schone has done and I don't know the other authors. My advice is: keep looking.

3 out of 5 stars This book was lucky to have Robin Schone!.......2006-02-09

Wow! I expected so much more of these great writers, however . . . .

I stopped reading Beatrice Small's offering after about 15 pages. It was completely absurd.

Susan Johnson, who I normally LOVE, seemed to phone her story in. Predictable and lacking depth (but what else shoud I expect from erotic romance?)

While Thea Devine's tale was very erotic, by the end of the story I wanted to kill the "hero". He was such a jerk and insisted on sexually humiliating his wife.

The only story worth reading was Robin Schone's, and I know I can usually count on her. Not only was the story VERY erotic, but the love was sweet, and most importantly: plausible. This book was lucky to have Robin Schone.

Don't waste your money, check it out from the library.

This French bestseller revels in life's small pleasures. Whether it be a croissant in the street, the Tour de France, a potluck, shelling peas, a glass of port, the smell of apples, the mobile library, a garden in August, getting your espadrilles wet, or an autumn sweater, these 34 short essays delight in the simple. In colorful, sensory language that's perfect for reading out loud, author Philippe Delerm paints a world of possibility and profound joy.

From the title essay:

It's the almost that counts, and the use of the conditional. The suggestion seems absurd at first. It's only the beginning of March and there's been nothing but rain, wind and showers all week. And now this. Since this morning, the sun's been shining with a sort of dull intensity, a calm persistence. Lunch is ready, and the table's been laid. But everything seems different somehow, even inside. The window's slightly ajar, there's an audible hum from outside and the air feels fresh.
Though it could easily be read in one sitting, this book is the kind to savor piece by piece like the delicacies of day-to-day life the author serves up as small, precious gifts. --Kathryn True

Book Description

A number-one bestseller in France: A charming medititation on the pleasures of life, from shelling peas to reading on the beach."A tiny breeze of delirious wisdom which changes everything and nothing....We could almost eat outside." An enchanting valentine to the everyday delights life has to offer, this short book captured the imagination of the French public last year and became a number-one bestseller. Sales are now over 600,000 copies. In each brief chapter the author contemplates the seemingly ordinary experiences that add joy to life, whether it's the first sip of beer, the snowstorm inside a paperweight, reading an Agatha Christie novel, or the smell of apples. At once uniquely French and yet universal, told with a lively, almost childlike curiosity, this charming book reminds us to enjoy and appreciate the small things that make life worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Cute Vignettes.......2005-01-02

This book held tangible vignettes of everyday things. It was a pleasure to read, but not a book that stayed with me after I finished reading it.

4 out of 5 stars A Remembrance of Things Past.......2004-04-24

If you have read 'Joie De Vivre' by Robert Arbor and enjoyed the concentration to detail and the concept of savoring those things which we identify with our lifestyles, you will definitely want to pick up Philippe Delerm's little book of small thoughts associated with moments in his life. If you have read Clower's "Fat Fallacy" and are intrigued with the French diet and its supposed inconsistancies with current nutritional advice, after reading "We Could Almost Eat Outside", you will perhaps understand better the concept of small bites full of flavor that stay with you and rekindle memories from childhood and other stages of life. Think the anticipation on Christmas morning or the anticipated crack of freshness in the air after a new snow and comprehension will dawn -- its not the food (or whatever) its the emotion it evokes.

Delerm writes down his memories about objects and moments in time, that some readers will find difficult to relate to only because they are seemingly specific to the French culture. However, if you eliminate the brand names and the high-speed trains, these simple poetic essays will trigger Proustian thoughts in your own mind and you will seek out your own croissant eaten in the street and your own taste of Turkish Delight purchased in a bag and not a box.

Thoughtfully and beautifully rendered. If you can, read it in its original language.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-07-25

This slim volume offers up simple wisdoms of life. Translated from the French, there are very few things that do not universallly carry over into my American sensibilities. Each brief essay presents one of the small and simple pleasures of life....driving at night, autumn sweaters, picking blackberries, the first sip of beer, and hearing a loved one's voice over the phone, among others. The essays on ordering and eating a banana split and paperweights are priceless. The insight offered..that we perch on the brim of possibility, the "make-believe world pitted against the real world" awaiting our decisions While this book points out the obvious, it is never too sweet or cloying. The use of language and phrasing is beautiful, the imagery it conjures up is a joy to read. I marked many of the pages, so I could find the wonderful phrases which caught my attention and imagination. This is a writer of rare talent. This is a book I will read over and often.

5 out of 5 stars little taste of life..........2000-06-24

If you are looking for a light but meaningful book you can read over and over, this is the right book you're looking for. Delerm's writing helps his readers explore the trivial but tender details in life, from a banana-split to reading on the beach; from a pullover in autumn to highway at night... he uses condensed language to depict some trinket but magical moments in ordinary living. You won't regret it.
